First and foremost - the store is OPEN! I was there today and had a long visit (and shopping trip)…read morewith Judy. She is working Wednesdays - Saturdays from 11am - 4pm and sometimes runs just a few minutes late. I hope when I'm her age that I only run a few minutes late too. We arrived from out if town the night before and I left her a note asking if she would call if she opened. She called just a few minutes after 11 and I jumped in the car to get there. 1) If you're a yarn snob - skip it. The store is packed, homey, somewhat unorganized - and utterly glorious in my opinion. (Your loss as she has some spectacular yarns!) 2) Judy is a wealth of knowledge and has forgotten more than I'll ever know about knitting. She'll sit down and teach you ANYTHING! 3) Her dog is all bark and no bite. She only wanted to meet me and lick me to death. She doesn't wander around the yarn or the store, just sits with Judy 4). Be ready to troll through boxes, step over fallen avalanches of yarn and best of all - be inspired! If you are looking for something in particular - ASK. She'll be able to find it after some thinking, and I'm always in awe of her selection 5). DON'T MISS THE BACK ROOM. You're welcome. 6). Give yourself plenty of time - it's overwhelming. My mind was racing from project to project and sometimes I just sat down and chatted for a few minutes to get focused. I've been shopping here for well on 15 years now (and I don't even live in Oregon!) and my only disappointment is when she is closed. I'm hoping as covid starts to clear, she can find reliable help and expand hours soon. Don't give up - it's well worth the wait!

You can probably go in any time you're visiting Aragon Farm (make an appointment to be sure). A Spinner's Barn has a beautiful selection of silky smooth alpaca yarn, gorgeous alpaca fur blankets, clothing and scarves woven locally, alpaca fleece, socks, stuffed animals, bags, hats, alpaca-themed gifts like mugs, and a variety of original landscape paintings by the Plein Air Painters of Lane County, whom you'll often find painting out at the farm. A Spinner's Barn also organizes spinning classes if you get in touch with them. We stopped by this week, petted the adorable and very sweet alpacas, and then quickly sought some warmth in the gift shop where we got some of the softest yarn I've ever felt as a christmas gift for a family member. Our visit was well worth the drive, but make sure you check that they're open, or just call ahead and they'll make sure they're there to open the place for you!

Afghans are woven locally from our yarn. The hoodies and designer sweaters are made in Peru, where alpacas originated. Landscape paintings adorn the walls, for sale by local artists. A spinning wheel is available for impromptu demonstrations, and the alpacas are usually gathered just outside for you to visit. Meet the animal who has contributed fleece during annual shearing. Having heard so much about the evils of this place (I'm from Eugene, home to every Bored White…read moreSavior of Everything), I thought I'd see it for myself. I liked it. It struck me as "TJ Maxx meets fabrics & crafts", though with a notable overabundance of plastic flowers. Not sure what the deal was with that, but you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a faux carnation. Lots & lots of fairly interesting trinkets, including huge name-in-lights alphabet letters, decorative mangoes & cheese - now *that's* white - and my personal favorite: the shiny pillows. YOU MUST FONDLE THE SHINY PILLOWS. As for the apparent Christian nature of the chain, it didn't jump out at me in terms of merchandise apart from a selection of surprisingly beautiful crosses (relax, I'm a confirmed agnostic, and I'm not going to shit on someone's parade just to look "cool" for grouches). So why the less-than-perfect rating? Because the people there appear to be assholes. I expect little in the way of humanity from the ill-paid among us, but my one interaction was with an older woman who was openly glaring at me for asking a question... in precisely the same "get thee behind me" manner I received almost everywhere during my travels in Red States. (In case you missed the hint/reference, I'm saying that she was a bitch masquerading as an acolyte of Jesus) But apart from this stupidly contrary-to-Christianity-AND-capitalism attitude, it was a fine experience there. In fact, you'd probably have a hard time getting *any* of the employees to even acknowledge you at all, so no need to worry about forcible conversions or anything... ;)
