    Let the creativity begin!

In the last few months, I've attended several of the MAKE Breaks on Saturday afternoons at Michael's in Okee Square. For the first event, I made a cute "Happy Fall" plaque to hang up on a wall in my house. Miss Abby from Michael's was so helpful and full of suggestions that I looked forward to another session of being 'crafty.' Michael's supplies most of the items like paint, glitter, ribbons, glitter, glue, and markers needed to make the projects. You buy the wooden plague, wreath, vase, pumpkin, whatever project is featured that Saturday. You can use a 40% off coupon towards your purchase. I love that I am able to create something without having to buy a lot of supplies that I may never use again. The second MAKE Break I attended, I attempted to decorate a (plastic) pumpkin. There were many children in attendance that day. It was fun to watch them as they created their own 'masterpieces.' Once again, Miss Abby was so full of ideas and plentiful supplies to spark the children's imaginations and creativity. My pumpkin didn't quite turn out how I wanted but I had a great time watching the kids have fun as they worked. Now I'm looking forward to getting myself to Michael's for one of the Christmas MAKE Breaks scheduled!

Great service. The person in charge of framing went out of his way to be very helpful on a project.

I love what they do for many communities in the area - they provide a space for artists to display and sell their works, they reduce the amount of trash that goes into landfills, they provide materials for just about anyone to make their own art (including and especially teachers!), educate youth and adults on how to make use of the supplies they offer, and they sell "thrift" type items at a great value that run the gamut from puzzles to vases. What I love most is that I can donate goods that I may have thought about tossing, because someone's garbage is another person's art supply! It's worth going to Resource Depot frequently, because you truly never know what you're going to find or how you're going to be inspired. For instance, I just got a string of lights that I want to hang in a dark corner of my home. I found this amazing ball of thick string and webbed colorful materials that I've now made into a chandelier. Their postcards are also so cool, and inspiring me to make other projects. The staff is always so nice and helpful, and when I've looked for something specific for a project, I've always found someone that is willing to help me out.

They take in items that would otherwise end up in landfills and make them available to people who can repurpose them. Resource Depot furthers its mission to leave the planet a little cleaner through workshops, events, and community partnerships. Their Pam Sartory GalleRE showcases local artists' upcycled artwork, while the Materials Marketplace and TrewasuRE Boutique offer repurposed items for sale. Their goal is simple yet impactful: provide materials to those who can use them while promoting sustainable practices and creative expression. Over the past 25 years, Resource Depot has kept an estimated 95+ tons of materials out of landfills, all while raising environmental awareness. As an educator with a limited--or sometimes non-existent--budget, a place like Resource Depot is a lifeline. Schools often can't provide enough supplies for students, and what little remains in the resource closet has to stretch for weeks or months. In the thrift area, I found an incredible variety of affordable items: games, holiday decorations, books, home goods, art supplies, faux florals, ribbons, artwork, and more. The paint alone was worth the trip! If you want to see a child light up, just offer them the chance to paint--fortunately, they had the Crayola washable kind I needed. Shopping is flexible and budget-friendly: a small bin is $5, a large bin is $10, and if you purchase eight large bins, you get one free. Teachers also receive a 15% discount on regularly priced items (not bins). These are prices anyone can afford. Resource Depot is truly a gem, and Palm Beach County is lucky to have such a creative, sustainable, and community-focused resource.
