The pain was excruciating, resulting in me having to go to the emergency room because the pain was so bad that it was adversely impacting my blood pressure. Due to multiple trips to the emergency room I was admitted. The attending physician in her discharge notes referred me as normal to an orthopedic specialist, but she also mentioned that there was a neurosurgeon in the Piedmont Physician's Group that she would like for me to obtain a consult. Of course the Ortho doctor initially ordered PT which did not help me and after 2 months of that, I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Gates, for the first time, a doctor actually listened to me. He ordered a nerve study and other test and more x-rays and when I returned for our consultation, he took time, we reviewed the results and he provided a diagnosis and plan of action. Diagnosis, sciatica and my L4 & L5 disc had slipped and was pinching my nerves. At this time I am on a walker. I had gone in less than 6 months from high impact aerobics to living, breathing and with every movement of my body being in horrible pain & only able to be slightly mobile on a walker with no relief regardless as to the strength of the pain medication. So very thankful for the ER's referral to Dr. Gates! He was caring, listened to my concerns and fears and provided me with a comprehensive plan of action that included a foraminotomy procedure that restored my quality of life and removed constant, tingling in my (R) leg and hip and living without constant pain and discomfort. Thank you Dr. Gates for your professional, caring approach to patient care. In my months of care with this physician, he only presented himself as a physician that was 100% dedicated to improving my health! 2 years later and I am still happy and pain free! Other neurologists only wanted to throw medications at my condition (chronic migraine), but Dr. Mishu understood that it was important to me to try to find the cause, and although I have been with him for about 2 years, he continues to try different ideas and procedures to try to find the root cause. He effectively treats my pain, and even gave me access to the "migraine cocktail" that they use in the ER so that I would no longer have to go through the agony of the ER process (with waits as long as 10 hours at my local hospital). He never rushes me or acts like he has another patient to get to (though I know he does). He's kind and understanding and makes me feel "heard". I am so happy with the care that I receive under Dr. Mishu that if I happen to move away (a distinct possibility) I will continue to come to Dr. Mishu. No one could ever replace him.

Over the years, I have consistently felt like just another number instead of a valued patient. The biggest issue occurred with my neurology appointment. In May, the office called to tell me that my health insurance was not active for my June appointment and that I would not be able to be seen. This made little sense because my June insurance premium had not even been due yet. I explained that my health insurance is on AutoPay and that my coverage would renew as it always does. I was told the office would verify the information and call me back. To the best of my recollection, I never received a follow up call. Because I had been told there was an issue with my insurance, I later called to reschedule my appointment. That is when I was informed that I would be charged a no show fee. The missed appointment was a direct result of the incorrect information provided by the office, not because I simply failed to show up. I escalated the issue and explained exactly what had happened, yet they still refused to waive the fee. It is incredibly frustrating to be penalized for an administrative error that was not my fault. If patients are expected to be accountable for their appointments, the practice should also be accountable when its staff provides incorrect information and fails to follow through on promised communication. After being a patient here for years, I expected better customer service, better communication, and a more compassionate approach from both the providers and the staff. Instead, I was left paying the price for the practice's mistake. Unfortunately, this experience has left me questioning whether this office truly values its patients.

Our 1st interaction was awful. His bedside manners was not good, his energy was OFF. I'm big on energy so I felt like matching him. He didn't take the time to listen to me as a patient. I didn't get to explain myself all the way before he came back into the room to tell me he wasn't doing anything for me. He should have more listening skills than that but a lot of doctors act like him Mr know it all and the patient doesn't know their body. He acted as if he was paying me when it was the other way around. I should have gotten more help and better service for them charging my insurance almost $500 & charging me for seeing him for nothing plus parking. I told them to not charge my insurance which they did. I'm being told the wrong things by the staff while I'm still experiencing migraines. He wrote a list of things we'd discussed, and included things to do and not to do. The entire visit was exceptionally thorough, informative, and helpful, all of which were done in a timely manner.
