I attempted to schedule an appointment as a first time patient. I have insurance that doesn't have a deductible, nor do I have a co-pay. However, they insisted on me paying a $35 non-refundable deposit in order to see the doctor. I was told it would be used against a future balance, though I would never have one. I offered providing a card for a hold, but I was told it wasn't possible They have a pretty awful front office. I might have dodged a bullet. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Cook for about a year and a half, and he has been a very poor doctor. Aside from being perennially late (I often wait between 20-60 minutes for him), Dr. Cook seems to constantly give poor advice, is often confused and unhelpful, and generally provides very little medical value. He has been very poor at engaging and truly asking the right questions and understanding my medical needs. In fact, most of the time, his medical assistants are much more helpful and engaging, but at the end of the day, they (appropriately) always defer to Dr. Cook, who is often bumbling and unhelpful. What a waste of time! They were way off schedule and I waited almost an hour only to be told I should reschedule because they would not be done in time for me to get my kids from school. I moved to Chicago not too long ago, so I have been looking for my primary care physician. I definitely did not find it in Dr. Cook! Most of the staff were great, including Jennifer, the super friendly and personable receptionist, and all the student Dr.'s I had were nice and professional. I did have one nurse come in to check my vitals and continue to swear up a storm when he couldn't figure out the computer. When the Dr. came in, I couldn't even tell he was the Dr. He was dressed in scrubby street clothes and was wearing a raggedy woven hat. The only thing he did for me was draw blood to check my cholesterol. That's it! Then he proceeded to lecture me on the epidemic of obesity in America (I am not even obese), while his belly fat was hanging out from the bottom of his t-shirt! The whole experience was completely unprofessional and uncomfortable. He did not make me feel welcome to ask questions and I had the constant impression that he didn't think I was smart enough to understand or comprehend anything he had to tell me. Why is a good doctor so hard to find in this town? I've been going to J Wesley for a little over a year now and was kind of 'meh' about him. Then I recently broke my finger and had to go twice in a couple weeks. Now I am actively searching for a new doctor. The first appointment was at 9:30am, and I still had to wait over an hour to be seen. Then after telling my whole story to a student they went and got the doctor, who started with, "Since this is your first time seeing me..." Nope. I've actually seen you about five times. Really shows a lack of preparation for this deal. Then I retold everything to him and he gave me some tongue depressors for a splint and told me to go buy tape. Classy. So there's that. Then I had to come for a followup two weeks later. I got a different student this time and had to re-explain everything. Then the guy said he thought it looked good. Nice. Because you saw it before? It's just ridiculous. The receptionist is always super nice though. And very competent. So there's that. read more

Well, yes this is a very cool and hip office. Dr. Cook is nice and all. . .but seriously I've had much better. I went in for my yearly physical. . .I was greeted by one of the physician's assistants students that intern there and was taken to an exam room. They took my blood pressure, asked me some questions about my health, and drew blood. Dr. Cook came in talked to me for about five minutes and left. I was told that was it. . . I was confused. . .the physician assistant told me that they liked to do physicals in two phases. . . I came back for phase two. Dr. Cook came in and told me my blood work looked fine and that I needed to lose weight. I asked, if anyone was actually going to do a physical examination of me. . .and was told it was done. . . Uhm? I thought the idea of a physical was to inspect you physically and make sure everything was ok. . . Fortunately I'm fine. . . I think. . .but just to be sure I think I'll go find someone to give me an actual physical. . . Why two stars and not one? I especially enjoy the med students rotating through--it's always good to contribute to their education, and they often return the favor. Wesley Cook is caring, knowledgeable and incredibly proactive where his patients well-being is at issue. He has a diverse group of patients, students and staff to help keep him "in the game" and I appreciate his collaborative orientation, particularly with ME, his patient. His practice is physically beautiful and welcoming, and I especially appreciate his music. This doctor has an amazing office, first floor office with windows and a sleek modern interior design. The staff are amazing and very easy to communicate with. This doctor will be the coolest guy you've met. Today, he was in cords, a sweater and a beatnik hat. He also played The Cure as well as some Brian Eno I believe. Though I may be no where near him, I am seriously considering him as my primary physician, that's how impressed I am with my first face-to-face meet with him. read more

As Bob W's "baby momma", I have to agree with what he has said about Dr. Cook. Bob, are you reading this? Yes, I am actually agreeing with you about something! Granted, it's been quite a few years since Dr. Cook was my or my daughter's PCP, but I will never forget those dapper shoes and that wonderful bedside manner. I'm a hard person to please, but Dr. Cook did just that. My phone calls were always promptly returned, he was always patient with me (as both a new mother AND a hypochondriac), and he always treated my family and I with courtesy and respect. I was a bit disappointed when my insurance changed to one his office didn't accept, and of course I ended up moving shortly after, but Dr. Cook still stands out as one of the nicest, warmest doctors I have ever had. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Cook since 2016 and have read some of the negative reviews, so I would like to offer my experience while addressing some but maybe not all of the concerns. First, Dr. Cook is one of what seem to be few primary care physicians who is receiving a supply of the Moderna vaccine for Covid 19 and is providing vaccines to currently eligible patients. This in and of itself is remarkable and evidence of the lengths that this practice goes to for the benefit of its patients. By the way, my experience in receiving the vaccine (I am phase IB eligible) was safe and totally comfortable. I am a relatively healthy individual, so thankfully my office experiences have been primarily preventative health care, check ups, etc. As a rule, I find everyone to be totally professional, and my discussions with Dr. Cook have allowed me to ask any questions I have about my health and he has always been willing and able to provide me with his medical knowledge. Now having said all this, I think that anyone who is thinking about making an appointment as a new patient should know: 1. Dr. Cook does have a contingent of medical students who do a lot of intake for wellness exams. If you don't want to talk to a medical student during an office visit, you may need to find another doctor or discuss that concern with the office staff. I see the involvement of medical students as helping the next generation of doctors get educated, even though they will do intake, they are not doing diagnoses or anything like that. And yes, they are not the seasoned professionals that Dr. Cook is, but again, this is more about intake and basic vital signs. 2. The office does not really take phone calls, most contact is either through the web portal or by email. If you want the office staff to be able to respond to an initial phone call, that expectation won't be met. On the other hand, any inquiry I've made on the portal or by email has been responded to quickly. 3. Regarding referrals, I see medicine as any other service, meaning that we need to take some responsibility as consumers. I tend to look for my own specialists (I've been in need of a gastroenterologist and orthopedic surgeon) and look over ratings, etc. Some of these have been different than Dr. Cook's recommendation. 4. I can't speak to any billing issues involving insurance except to note that Dr. Cook seems to use a third party contractor for billing and that hasn't always been the most seamless process, as there have been situations where co-insurance hasn't been noted, on the other hand, I've always been able to call and get the matter resolved. In conclusion, I am very satisfied with Dr. Cook and his staff and am willing to tolerate some billing issues that have arisen. read more

I am really not sure how anyone could complain about anyone in this practice. The front desk is amazing and very responsive. Lupe has been wonderful and very informative when it comes to insurance questions. And Dr. Cook is absolutely the best doctor I have seen. He is knowledgeable and really cares for his patients. I appreciate that he has students in the building. When you are trained by someone as compassionate as Dr. Cook, I believe it sets you up for a fruitful, compassionate career as Dr. Cook has had. I have been a patient of Dr. Cooks about 15 years and he is by far the most caring doctor I have been too. Dr. Cook takes a very holistic approach to medicine which he really gets to know you as a person just not another patient. Dr. Cook provides all of the traditional medical care you would expect from a great doctor plus compassion and understanding. Dr. Cook will give you his email for basic questions or office followups. The office is great it really puts me at ease compared to most doctors offices with great music, surroundings (awesome art) and Jennifer the very friendly and sharp office manager. Was nice and helpful the first time that I saw him. The second time was through a telemedicine appointment, and it was like seeing a totally different person. He was mean, belittling, and completely unhelpful. I tried to tell him that my insurance would not cover the medication that he had prescribed and requested a different one, and he treated me awfully because of this request. He would not listen to me. It was a total waste of time and money. He made me feel so badly that I cried and ended up feeling worse off after the appointment than when I started. Not to mention, he charged me a no show fee the next day when I couldn't make it to my appointment due to work. So not only did I end up feeling worse, but then he made another 35 dollars off of me over that. He had a med student in the room with him the entire time who witnessed everything and also looked taken aback by how Dr. Cook was treating me. I would not recommend this doctor at all. read more

My wife is a patient of Dr. Cooks. Last year there was some billing disputes regarding how they set up a bill and wrongfully charged my insurance company. Today my wife goes to Walgreens to pickup her perscription refill for her birth control. They call Dr. Cook's office and he/his office states that my wife is not a patient of his. This is an outright lie. If he is mad regarding the billing dispute, he should not have offered the solution that he did (which we accepted). read more

I don't know what it is with my bad luck with doctors here, but I will definitely not be returning to Dr. Cook. I've never been particularly impressed with his office- I find Dr. Cook sort of aloof and not particularly professional- but I am rarely sick so I didn't really feel the need to find a new doctor. On my last visit, though, I decided that I am pretty much done with a doctor who is basically stealing my money. I went in for a check-up. My main reason for going was because I wanted him to do a blood test to check some hormonal levels. It just happened that the week that I went in, I was having really bad allergies. I mentioned to the assistant that saw me first that I was there for a check-up but that I thought there was a possiblity I might also have a sinus infection. That was obviously a mistake because I did not get anything that resembled any kind of check up. She asked me all these questions about my allergies, and I REPEATEDLY said that I wasn't really there for that and if nothing else, I wanted to get a blood test done. Once Dr. Cook came in, she told him about the possiblity of a sinus infection- and I was really annoyed. He prescribed me some medicine and antibiotics, and was sort of like- ok, thanks, see ya. I told him that I wanted to get a blood test done (since the assistant didn't feel the need to pass on that info), and that I was having some concerns about my hormonal levels. He ordered a blood test, and seriously could not get out of the room fast enough. At no time did they do anything in regards to a check up- I didn't even remove an article of clothing! Yet- it seems that I got charged for one! So- I feel like he completely ripped me off. A few days later, I sent Dr. Cook an e-mail about my test results (like he asked me to). After a week, I had no received a response. I called a few times, and finally got an e-mail back. They were the results of my CHOLESTEROL- which is a) not a test I needed and b) completely not what I had asked for. His note also included a little message to me about how my levels were high and that I should watch what I eat. (I looked online and considering that the levels of my chlosterol are in the good to very good range, I have no idea what the f he was talking about). I was more concerned about the test that he did not do. When I wrote him back and explained the miscommunication (or basically that he had screwed up), he actually argued with me and insisted that I had never asked him for that. He wanted me to come back in to the office so we could "talk about it". I was furious. I not only did I talk AT LENGTH with the assistant about the test, but I also talked to both of them about it once he came in. After talking to some other (former) patients, I've found out that this has happened to at least one other person I know- which is inexcusable. If you want to go to a doctor who will actually listen and pay attention to you, I suggest you go elsewhere. read more

The worst medical appointment I've had to date with terrible bedside manner. I came to this facility a handful of times because Dr. J. Wesley cook treats both my husband and brother in law. Every appointment you primarily interact with a student, a different one each time and it's clear no one reviews your medical history. I waited an hour but was only seen for a few minutes. I felt as if my patient file was confused with that of someone else because they did not try to address anything I had set up my appointment for and kept asking me irrelevant questions. The doctor proceeded to make a diagnosis without even looking at me (I was there to rule out cancerous moles). I was perplexed because the doctor acted very agitated, short and thought I was lying about having a gynecologist or practicing safe sex even though I was referred to one previously for surgery, have told them my birth control methods, not to mention my husband is also a client. It's very insulting to be treated this way as an adult. He asked me to send him an e-mail that night with my doctor's information (as he did not believe me) and ONLY then would he respond in kind with critical information I needed regarding an immigration doctor referral (which was also very time sensitive). They never sent in my prescription and forgot to give me back my debit card. I went to a skin specialist and was told I had received a misdiagnosis. I do not want to speculate what the issue is but there appears to be a different quality of treatment based on gender. I have worked in medical environments myself for 7 years, I understand what running a facility takes and that people have "off days". I think both the staff and students overall are friendly and do try. However I would never be allowed to treat individuals this way, make so many errors and keep my job. read more

First impressions: office waiting area is too small and sometimes uncomforatble, especially if you have to sit next to someone sick or just plain wierd. The office employee is very nice and helpful. The assistance are students from a local university, and are friendly and helpful. The doctor is... a little out there. I went for chiropractic services twice, and haven't seen much difference. The 4th year college assistant actually was more effective than Dr. Cook, but I will give him one more visit to see what happens. They play techno music and definetely are trying for the "alternative" vibe. This place is definitely alternative, with a sign in the window that states that the doctor believes the healing powers of "higher beings" is greater than his. read more

Avoid this doctor's office at all costs. I went in for a first-time visit needing something very simple: blood pressure medication. The receptionist, Jenny T, told me I had a $1,500 deductible and I needed to pay $100 before being seen by the doctor - in addition to my co-pay. I informed her that I had no deductible and I asked her more than once to please call the insurance company and double-check. She deliberately refused my simple request to make an easy phone call and instead denied me seeing the doctor and getting medication. Blood pressure medication is not a joke and this receptionist had no right to deny me treatment. The humane answer would have been to simply call the insurance company as requested and verify but she was 'too busy.' IN the meantime, without BP Med, I could have died! Stay far away from Dr. Cook's practice as his receptionist will PREVENT health care from taking place. Even if the doctor himself might be A-OK, the nightmare of this receptionist is not worth the risks to your health! read more

I can see how people might be intimidated by a trip to Dr. Cook. If you are looking for a white coat impersonal doctor - look elsewhere. I was initially shocked by how down to earth he was and how casual he dressed. To be quite honest it really scared me at first- I thought who is this guy? But after being a loyal patient for 6 years, I've found him to be incredibly intelligent and extremely well educated on new treatments. I also found him to be extremely caring of his patients and very sensitive to any discomfort or questions you may have. He is quick to answer any questions I have via email or in person. The receptionist Jennifer is great and makes you feel very comfortable. A prior post said he was trying to be cool. However, he is not in the business of trying to be the "Cool" doctor. He is in the business of healing people and keeping them healthy. His coolness is just a byproduct of that. read more

Ater my last doctor moved out of Chicago, I found myself with the daunting task of finding a new doc. Two different friends recommended Dr. Cook. The most difficult part of the transition was actually getting an appointment, but after a few phone calls and emails my first appointment was confirmed. This was just over a year ago and I have found the office staff and Dr. Cook to be professional, friendly, and eager to go the extra mile. Dr. Cook has also recommended me to a specialist who has also been great and is helping me address a chronic condition. The office staff know me and my healthcare needs. I've never had to wait more than 5 or so minutes to be seen and Dr. Cook is patient, taking as much time as necessary to fully answer my questions and to provide me the necessary background on my condition. I never feel rushed or that I'm not being taken seriously. His office is convenient for me, about 15 minutes from both home and work. Strongly recommend! read more

This Dr. is a mess. He has way to many students in his tiny office. The waiting area only sits about 4 people, barely. When I told him the medicine was not working, his response was "it worked for the other guy" well, that did not help, an issue that should have been dealt with easily ended up taking a couple months and surgery, it could have been prevented if he put effort in his work. They are always willing to fit me in when I am sick or in need; and Dr. Cook is always kind and attentive. I also really like the fact that he has young doctors working at his practice. I went to this office one day to check it out and saw this "doctor" yelling at and in a physical confrontation with someone inside the office in front of other patients. I visited Dr. Cook to make him my PCP, get a general check-up and discuss an overall health strategy. He was thorough in his examination and his warm bedside manner and careful questioning allowed us to develop a clear picture of my overall health and discuss some particular concerns/considerations. His background in Osteopathy made him my top choice as a Primary Care Physician and will help me combat some of the negative effects having a desk job has had on my back and legs. My family has been with doctor cook since I was born. I'm 19 years old now and still seeing Doctor Cook. His compassionate and causal personality makes him very approachable which is great when you want to have a close relationship to your physician. Doctor Cook cares not only about his patient's physical health but also their emotional health. I lost my older brother in a violent incident 10 years ago which had huge ramifications on my family's emotional health. Doctor Cook has been persistant in his concern as a family doctor in regards to this issue and other things that have arisen. Doctor Cook goes above and beyond in his role as a healer. I don't want to give the impression that Doctor Cook is in anyway a licensed psychologist but I just want to emphasize his sincere concern for the patients he serves. Doctor Cook's office is one of the most comfortable medical environments imaginable. The space is constructed in a way that creates a feeling of openness/spaciousness, yet can be made private when the need arises. There are a lot of student doctors in his office and all of the ones that I have met have been very nice, intelligent, careful, but most of all, professional. There is always nice music playing and the receptionists are always very attentive and helpful. I have been going to Dr. Cook now for six years. Although I may only see him a couple of times a year, he remembers me and asks how my wife and child are doing. Dr. Cook is very down to earth, he takes the time to listen and looks me in the eyes when speaking. I appreciate that he does not push unnecessary tests or medication and on occasion has suggested a holistic solution to my illness instead of just giving me some pills. I've been seeing Dr Cook, as my primary, for about 10 yrs now, and can't rate him highly enough. He's easy-going, approachable, and easy to talk to, but a very serious professional. On almost any visit, you can expect to be seen by a student or two. This may seem kind of annoying, at first, but I've found that it means my chart, trends, etc. get looked at at, and double-checked by fresh, objective eyes each time. It also has meant that I've learned something new,or gotten a new health tip, to think about on each visit. Dr. Cook generally makes his appearance at the end of each visit, after I've been prepped, measured, and had a chance to talk to the med student and staff. This has meant that I've had the chance, over the years, to ask better questions, and get better answers. WELL worth the few extra minutes per visit. The office may look a bit "store-fronty," but the Dr and his staff are pros. I HATE going to the doctor, but Dr Cook and his staff make it pretty painless, and well worth the trip. I used to be a patient of Dr Cook and when my insurance was cancelled a couple of years ago I cancelled my appointment even though they offered to work with me because my partner did not have insurance and the office billed him a ridiculous amount for a visit and medication. I received a bill for a missed appointment even though I had called two days prior and explained I was out of work and could not pay, the girl working the desk said I had not called when I tried to dispute. Well, what could I do at that point. I refused to pay the bill because I thought it was ridiculous to pay $40 for a missed appointment. This is two years ago and I still receive bills regularly for this missed appointment PLUS an added charge of $5 for every couple of months bringing the bill to $125 to date. What pathetic Doctor...business must be really great to pursue a missed appointment fee from a patient that will never return to your office. There are plenty of great Doctors out there that have better customer service and are not petty....Please look elsewhere regarding your health concerns. read more
