This is the first time I have left a review anywhere on the internet; but I felt obligated to do this, so you have a chance to make a better choice than we had. This isn't the first encounter with this organization, but I am afraid I would need to write a book in order to cover all the things that are wrong with Michigan Memorial Park (cemetery). My family has 4 generations of relatives buried there & many of us have already purchased plots ourselves. Mine is with my Mother, so I can hardly go elsewhere for myself. My goal is to let you know the issues we have had as I have discovered we are not alone. These people are the most unprofessional and downright disrespectful group I have ever encountered. My sister passed away three days after Christmas. She is buried next to her husband & the arrangements were made by her two remaining children; her oldest son passed away in June and he is buried there also. Neither one of them ever made funeral arrangements & was relying on guidance from the funeral home and the cemetery. The funeral home we use (not Michigan Mem.) was great, they included the fee for opening the grave to accommodate the family & would pass it on to the cemetery. Mich. Mem. Service Rep. Larry Piiparinenwas was to arrange the burial. One of the requests was a grave-side burial. My niece was sole Executor of the estate & was surprised when asked for her brother's signature. Mr. Piiparinen didn't want to travel for her brother's signature & asked if he could stop by the funeral home, it would only take a few minutes. To accommodate him, she agreed. When he arrived, she signed & her brother asked a simple question regarding his signature. He gave him no answer, but said to him "well if you don't sign we won't bury her". After the signatures were obtained, instead of leaving, he proceeded to ask for money to open the grave. My niece told him she had paid the funeral home & they would be taking care of that. After a back-and-forth he said he wouldn't leave without the money. The family had to enlist the funeral home assistance to end this situation. I would love to say it ended there, but it didn't. When the funeral procession arrived at the cemetery instead of going to the grave site, we were directed to the Mausoleum, to everyone's horror & disbelief, they brought a fork-lift out, took the casket out of the hearse, put it in the vault & sealed it right there. The fork-lift led the procession to the other side of the cemetery with my sister on it, just like transporting a pallet of material to a construction site. The grave site was as crude as it gets; nothing but a pile of dirt and a hole. The weather was brutal & so were they. We had a few minutes for prayer & two workmen came with cables & they lowered it into the hole as her grandchildren watched. I have been to many grave-side burials & they looked nothing like that. All grave-side burials I have ever been to, have had the vault already in the ground. A week later I tried to contact the cemetery to get some answers as to why my sister was treated with so little dignity. I had a contact name, but they would not take my calls. Instead, they turned it over to their attorney without knowing what I was calling about. He contacted me & when he found out the nature of my call, the person called me. She claimed that the cemetery was never told we wanted a grave-side burial, which was not true, because Mr. Piiparinen quoted my niece a price for a canopy & chairs. A situation like this can't be fixed; there are no do-overs here, but for-warned is for-armed & if you already have property there, at least you will know what to watch for or you may want to get rid of it. This is not the only problem there; the upkeep of the grounds isn't much better. The trees die. they leave the dead trees there. The weeds close in on the headstones, they do nothing about it. Again, you must call over & over or show up in the office. If you finally talk to someone all you get is lip service or excuses (such as) we didn't know about it. Does the grounds keeper ever go around the grounds to see what is going on????? We now must report the problems to them before they get fixed. I had to replace a tree myself, it cost $400. They told me what kind to buy, where to buy it etc., it didn't get planted until November. But worse than that, they said I would have to water it, they don't. They also took out the trash can & the water faucet a long time back. If you need water, you must find a way to get it there yourself. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT WE PAID FOR AT THIS CEMETERY. Their ad says they are with you every step of the way. We got none of that less consideration, no empathy & someone acting like a muscle man trying to get money. This is so hard & sad. It is hard enough to lose a piece of your heart, the aching that goes with it, to be put on like this should be a crime. They make a contract with each person; problem your not there to make them. I have several family members that have been layed to rest at Michigan Memorial. If you can, choose another cemetary. When my father passed away, I went back the next day. All of the flowers on his grave were picked clean. When my brother passed away, the same thing...all of his flowers place by/on the gravesite were stolen. I have since noticed that others have had the same thing happen to them. When I questioned the office, I was told that there was nothing they could do about it. My mother recently passed away. Because of the stolen flowers I had told the funeral director to put my mom's flowers on top of her vault and that I was going to bury the flowers with my mom. We waited at my mom's plot for 45 minutes, waiting for my mom to be brought to us. Finally a man in a truck drove up. I went to talk to him and was told that they took my mom to the wrong plot. The family at the plot where my mom was taken had insisted strongly that they had the wrong person....probably noticing the flowers on top of the vault were not theirs. I was told, they had to go back to the office to see who was buried where. Absolutely unprofessional on both accounts. I imagine, they bury people in the wrong plot more often that we care to believe. Extremely incompetent and neglectful!. And.....no apology was offered!!! read more

They suck and I would not recommend them for any one...... They throw your loved ones things in the trash twice a year....even if its the birthday of your loved one and u just put it on there,,,they throw it away.....my little girl passed away she was only 5...our first christmas and bday they threw her stuff away...went to visit her and the stuff was gone...throwed away...there reason is ,they clean the graves twice a year..no matter what it is,if u aint there to get it they throw it away..well they just did it again..my daugherts 13th bday was march 28th 2020..I had this beautiful cross made for her big 13..and then covid became a bigger thing ..with the lockdown and everything this place still had the time to go and remove all the stuff of the graves...that beautiful cross is in the trash gone forever.....I'm broken once again because of this place.....I paid a lot of money to have my daughter there..and I feel its wrong to take these things off the graves and throw them away like trash...this is a place I should be able to come and honor my little girl..but this place makes me not wanna put stuff on her grave..and the worst of it is I regret ever putting her there..I live a nightmare every night all ready losing my daughter and now I live in fear along with nightmares ,terriable regrets and sadness, I will never get my daughter back and now I will never get those keepsakes back...its a horrible feeling..this place has tortured me,I would hate for another mother like me to have to come to visit their child and the grave is empty of all your keepsakes,letters,pictures,stuffed animal..flowers..its heartbreaking crushing....it dont matter they throw it away ....I hate this place...they are heartless and only care about the money they get read more

My father passed away at the end of July 2015, and since he already owned grave plots at the adjoining cemetary we chose to have the funeral service at Mich. Memorial Funeral Home. From our first encounter with their staff until well after the burial we have endured one incompetent mistake after another. Had our family not been in mourning, this cluster of events would have been comical. The problems started out with the initial consultation. We ordered a specific casket with removable corners (praying hands) that were to be removed and given to our family members before burial and were to be replaced with the original pillar corners. Teresa who was "handling" the arrangements, wrote down the wrong casket, a mistake that thankfully my sister caught before Teresa left to sitting in the casket room for an hour waiting for the lady from the floral shop to arrive (she apparntly forgot to inform the floral shop that we were waiting to order flowers). We also told Teresa we wanted our Dad's thumbprint and ordered a couple of pendants. On the first day of the visitation, we found that not only was there no kneeler in front of the casket, but Dad had been in the Army yet they neglected to placed the American flag in the corner of his casket. We were escourted out to the cemetary to pick out which one of Dad's plots we wanted him buried, we picked out the one we wanted, but on the day of the funeral there was different plot opened. Right after the funeral service we accompanied Dad to the vaulting room where his casket was to be placed into the burrial vault. My family reminded the funeral director that we were supposed to get the commemorative corners from his casket which she promptly un-clipped. She did not have the original corner pillars with her and was going to just leave the casket with gross looking corners she had to be told we wanted them replaced. She had to send someone back to the funeral home to retrieve them. Then they closed the door to the vault room and had us stand there in the hall way and wait for 30 minutes or more while they retrieved the pillers and opened the casket to re-attach them. We followed the vaulted casket to the grave site and was forced stand out in the middle of the cemetary, besided the hole they dug, with our dad's vaulted casket sitting in the bucket of a front end loader while the cemetary personnel finally figured our that we were in fact shown the wrong plots in the first place and that Dad was in fact being interned in the correct plot, (this man was very rude and insinuated that we were in fact the ones who made the mistake). This took about 45 minutes for them to figure out that we had actually been shown someone elses grave plots instead of the ones that Dad owned. A week or so later my brothers ordered Dad's grave marker. A temporary marker would be placed at the gravesite until the permanent one arrives. A few days later it was discovered that the temporary marker was in place, but with the wrong first name on the marker! Now it is 10 weeks after the funeral and are still waiting for the thumbprint pendants. After my brother made yet another phone call to the funeral home, he found that Teresa, in her infinite wisdom, never submitted the order to the person at the funeral home who is responsible for ordering them. We have been assured that the order was now placed and will be delivered soon.....Can we trust that it is actually our father's thumbprint being cast and not just some random finger print? Dad owned sereral plots at this cemetary which me and my siblings now own. I really think we should get rid of these plots, I personally do not ever want to do business with Michigan Memorial Funeral Home or their Cemetary.Your review helps others learn about great local businesses. We put in a work order in May to clear the headstone of my father in law in early May of this year - it was nearly completely over grown with sod. It took them four months to get around to do it - we just got a call today that they had just finished it. Also, when we went to the front desk there to complain about it in May, the person at the front desk did not even know the lay out of the cemetary. Very un knowledgeable. All she seemed to know what to do is set up appointments with grave sales people. Most of the water spigots on the site are shut off. If you want to water flowers bring jugs of water. This place is very poorly maintained, it is clear that all they want to do is take in money and do nothing for it nor provide services. read more

Not happy with this place. In November I placed a vigil light on my recently deceased wife's grave. I was there a couple of weeks ago and it was there. I went today and it's gone. I spent over $100 for this light. I went to the office and they didn't care they said I as removed on March 1st which was not true. I was told to go to the maintenance office they would have it. I went there and all there was was junk. So they either let someone else take it or the removed it and sold it? Not sure which is true but either way the light is gone and I'm out the money and something that meant a lot to me. Beware of this cemetary and there policy's. read more

When my father passed away I called to make arrangements for the burial of his cremains. I made this call on July 13, 2012. I was told the fee to open the already purchased plot and the cost of the vault required to bury his cremains. The date was set for August 25, 2012. I spoke with Phil. I asked if everything was set and was told yes. It was quite a surprise when I received a call from Debbie asking me about my siblings and then telling me everyone had to sign a release. By the way, I thought that was rather sneaky- why didn't she just say up front they required family members signatures? She asked about how many siblings and then says "well everyone has to sign the release before they will open the grave site". I received this call 3 days prior to the burial. I asked why I was hearing about this 3 days before the burial was to take place when I had set the date and made arrangements 6 weeks ago. She said she just received the information on her desk that day. Great, what if one of us had been on vacation, or deployed overseas?? I can not convey how stressful this was, adding to an already stressful time in our lives. Not to mention inconvenient. I live and hour away and we have a sibling that was not able to attend due to health issues. How was he supposed to sign this form? They refuse to open the grave until everyone has signed. They had someone take the form to my sibling, but he had to stay home all day waiting. We had to arrive an hour before hand to allow time for all to sign and enough time to dig the grave before other family members arrived for the ceremony. Debbie said she asked Phil why she received the paperwork so late, that I had arranged this a month ago. He responded saying, "she had not made the arrangements that far in advance." I guess I'm being called a liar? I have the AT&T bill to prove it. Had Phil or anyone else there been on the ball, we would have been informed of this requirement and could've requested the form be mailed and signatures obtained long before the burial. Our family had to wait and watch as they dug my father's grave site. How inconsiderate and unprofessional. I would recommend going elsewhere. The grounds are beautiful, but the staff is uncaring and incompetent. read more

I have no complaints about Michigan Memorial. It is a beautiful cemetery and the staff is always polite and helpful. They even drive around to families at graves to see if any assistance is needed or any maintenance is needed on the grave. My mom's marker has been sunk into the ground a few times due to work around and near her grave, and they always raise it back up and clean it up very quickly after we put in a request. read more
