The school is a unique blend of casual conversations and easy-going relationships coupled with a serious commitment to Aikido. The instructions, moves, and classes are all in Japanese. Testing is a serious business and an in-depth process but you are never testing unless the instructors has told you that you are ready. They also offer seminars and women's self-defense classes. Went to Mick Doyle's for a free first class based off the recommendation of a current member…read more On the advice of an employee, the hubs and I took both the beginner and intermediate boxing classes. The beginner class was more of a warmup that focused on footwork and technique and the intermediate class moved into hitting and bag work. While the trainers and workout was fantastic, about 45 minutes of the two hours was taken up by the trainer talking (no movement during this time) and one-on-one work with the first trainer. The one-on-one time was great, however, if you were not working with the trainer you were just standing around. It seems this time would be more beneficial if people were paired up to continue training while waiting for their turn with the trainer. If you are looking for a workout, you may want to just attend the beginner class. If you are looking to become more efficient and trained in boxing, both classes are probably needed. The intermediate class (at least during our visit) is just a continuation of the first class and cannot stand on its own. While the extended time was a let down, as newbies we definitely needed the break. If we were to continue on, this would probably be an issue if all classes have this amount of down time.
