Both the beginner and advanced dance classes are well taught - starting with warm-up, then some basic across-the-floor steps or technique, and ending with some choreo. The beginner modern class is every Thursday at 7:30PM and advanced is every Thursday at 7:00PM, located in 2 separate studios. It is a little bit difficult to find, but it is located in the back of a huge bldg complex, with plenty of parking available in the lot. The beginner class is perfect for those who either have not danced before or have some modern dance experience from the past, but have not danced for a while. The advanced class is for those who have some dance experience. The teachers are wonderful and really tailor the lessons to each individual. My only gripe is the cost of the classes. $17/class if you want to take one 1.5 hour class. Or you can get the 5 class card or the 10 class card option, which is cheaper (these cards have time limits though). I had bought the 5 class card once, and am taking a break as it is too expensive to maintain.

This school takes a more curriculum/teaching-oriented approach rather than simple "day care". They follow a pedagogical philosophy similar to Montessori, emphasizing freedom and harnessing each child's own specific interests and motivations. The biggest strength of YS is the outstanding teaching staff, all of whom care deeply about the well-being and growth of the children. The different teachers within the "cottage" of four adjoining classrooms developed individual connections with my son and the other children, knowing well their various interests and quirks. The pre-k cottage director, Ms. Jess oversees the classrooms with expertise and a deep sense of empathy. She effectively fields informal chats with parents about questions and concerns that pop up on the fly. Between the wonderful teachers and cottage director, I always felt that my child was in very safe and nurturing hands. The classroom atmosphere is warm and inviting. There is lots of natural light and many learning stations with carefully thought-out objects left for the children to "discover". Kids get zero screen time at the Young School. Instead of punishing children, behavior is managed through redirection and talking. Healthy snacks are offered, and the staff teaches and practices good hygiene. The main area that could be improved upon is communication from the director. On several occasions, I received mass emails chastising (unnamed) other parents for taking screenshots of the live video feed, requesting child-specific changes to naptime logistics, incorrectly using cubby space, and calling in to the classroom during non-naptime hours. ("Any parent disrupting the day too frequently will lose camera access and a parent meeting will be requested.") I would prefer these types of issues be resolved by one-on-one conversations with the relevant parents, rather than public shaming. The unprofessional tone of these emails was underscored by a lack of basic proofreading. My child's classroom had high turnover, with three different teachers in a six-month period. Shockingly, when one left and was replaced by a brand new employee, parents were not given any notice whatsoever. I showed up one morning to drop off my son in his classroom and encountered a total stranger who claimed to be in charge. Luckily, another teacher was in the cottage area and vouched for the new teacher's legitimacy. Lack of preemptive communication on this type of matter is unacceptable. Another instance of poor communication occurred when initially attempting to enroll my child. The paperwork was confusing and I had trouble getting questions answered, as other reviews have noted. Overall, I recommend the Young School as a safe, nurturing, and educational environment for child; parents may have to deal with some unneccesary hassles.

Three months have passed and my…read morechild is still traumatized by his experience at the school after only 2 days. whenever we happen to drive near or in the shopping complex where the school is located, he gets nervous as if I am going to take him back (it's near a UPS and a restaurant we frequently eat at.) this evening he randomly shared that the director stated that she was going to put him a classroom with babies. this is new information that he didn't share with me three months ago. this school owes my child an apology and should consider adding new emotional intelligence training for their administrative staff. there is no exception to this type of behavior. I've received no phone call from the owners to discuss the experience. parents beware!

When I talk with parents, they can't say enough about how sweet the director and teachers are. They also teach solid technique. Knees over toes. Square hips. Proper terms by the time they're teens. Technique that won't harm your kids' joints and will set him/her up for doing well in advanced work. The studios themselves are great, too--sprung floors, Marley, full mirrors, proper barres. They put on great shows multiple times a year with roles for students of all levels. I'm taking off one star only because the place isn't strict enough for someone to go straight from here to a professional school--but I think a lot of parents will LIKE that. My background is Balanchine (SAB) and Vaganova, but locally, I've taken classes at Baltimore Ballet and at Peabody. Baltimore Ballet would be my choice for drop in classes, adult classes, kids classes, supplemental classes, and anyone who wants the chance to perform. Definitely read the reviews that are"not recommended at this time." They are clearly from real students. The reviews that aren't hidden are just weird. All ballet schools require a certain color leotard, extra payment for performances, etc. Baltimore Ballet's performances are spectacular. Lots of class time involves rehearsal for them. If you don't want to pay, then don't, but don't complain that your kid can't participate. December = Nutcracker in dance.

It's located in a strip mall that has a few stores to occupy your time while you wait for your little one to finish. There is ample parking and multiple entrances to the lot. The instructors are very knowledgable and experienced. They are great with making the classes fun and keeping the kids entertained. My daughter had learned a lot and I have been amazed by her progress. I usually go across the street to the Dunkin donuts to have a coffee knock out a few yelp reviews. The consistency of this class allows a student to repeat it and reinforce everything he/she learned. The intermediate classes are much more dynamic and the material is always changing. These classes are great for those who are confident in their foundation in Argentine Tango. Due to the small class sizes, gender imbalance fluctuations occur. However, the class utilizes a rotating partner scheme (common in social dance classes). Of course, I find the time without a partner is a great time to observe. The instructors, Roger and Claire, are passionate about tango, but have a specific style of instruction as well as a particular style of tango. Ultimately, the only way you'll know if you'll enjoy the classes is to attend one and see for yourself. Not directly related, but an additional nice thing I like is that water is provided.
