Ms. Darby ushered nervous parents and anxious kids through Covid isolation by quickly adapting to an online format and provided several social outlets like family hip classes and coloring online with the kids. This Spring she even taught a Father Daughter class and gifted us with such a special memory to treasure. The last two years the addition of Musical Theatre has opened up a whole other avenue for expression for my child. This past year you could see a real focus on advancing technology and diverse modes of communication to reflect the times and keep parents informed. From dance, to theatre, to summer camp we are glad to be a MAD family.

They have a variety of choices, but I can only speak to the modern dance class. Both the beginner and advanced dance classes are well taught - starting with warm-up, then some basic across-the-floor steps or technique, and ending with some choreo. The beginner modern class is every Thursday at 7:30PM and advanced is every Thursday at 7:00PM, located in 2 separate studios. It is a little bit difficult to find, but it is located in the back of a huge bldg complex, with plenty of parking available in the lot. The beginner class is perfect for those who either have not danced before or have some modern dance experience from the past, but have not danced for a while. The advanced class is for those who have some dance experience. The teachers are wonderful and really tailor the lessons to each individual. My only gripe is the cost of the classes. $17/class if you want to take one 1.5 hour class. Or you can get the 5 class card or the 10 class card option, which is cheaper (these cards have time limits though). I had bought the 5 class card once, and am taking a break as it is too expensive to maintain.

They are a non-profit organization that is more interested in teaching dance as an art form than making a buck. I've had at least one of my munchkins going here for the last 4 years (ever since we moved to this area). Between them they've taken Ballet 1, 2, 3, 4, Pre-Pointe, Pointe, Modern Dance, Tap, and Jazz...so I think we've seen quite a variety of classes. We could not be happier with KDT. It has been and continues to be a positive place for our munchkins to learn dance (and made some good friends to boot). If you're in the market for a place for your little ones (or even big ones) to learn about dance I'd definitely suggest checking them out.

My thoughts on this studio:…read more 1. Don't bother with the dress code. I purchased my dancer specific dancewear after talking to the Registrar, Flora, about the dress code. The majority of dancers are not following the dress code. 2. Don't expect a peaceful studio. The handbook specifically says under the sharing spaces section: keep voices at a low volume to reduce distractions and noise and show each other respect and kindness. This was not enforced. After every class, the dancers coming out of the prior class were extremely noisy for 30-45 minutes outside the studio. It was extremely disrespectful to my dancer's class. After I politely requested for quiet in the studio, my request was ignored and the behavior continued. 3. Don't expect to feel welcome as a new dancer. Priority is given to dancers not new to the studio. I had questions about my dancer, and the school director, Alex, could not be bothered to evaluate my dancer. 4. Be prepared for a weird smell. The smell of the studio made my asthma worsen. I want to mention this because I know how frustrating it can be to enter a space that triggers asthma for those who suffer from it.

It's free! You might know it only as an event venue, but there's: * Nice walking trails and farm country views. * A few segments would count as hiking if you want to introduce somebody! * Creekside access in the woods. Fiddling around a natural creek is a formative experience * A selection of beautiful older trees that survived from colonial times * Including a massive ancient white oak, Maryland's state tree and quite rare now. If you've never seen a "big tree" in person this is a must-see. It has presence. * Restored buildings and history displays * A resident ambassador owl. Go closer to dusk to see him active * Restored natural meadows (great macro photography) * Examples of bee keeping, different types of gardening, etc. Lots to play / do / learn, or for us older folks, walking around and taking photos. A couple of notes: * hours on maps are for the venue, the grounds are actually open dawn-to-dusk * the hiking is pretty mild but there's a lot to see. * alltrails isn't accurate for many of the paths, but everything is really well signed (or grab the map from their own website) * if you're doing the full circuit of trails, wear those ankle-support shoes/boots - it might seem silly for the easy terrain, but the angle of the farm trails is "hard" in sneakers, and you'll appreciate that support. Enjoy it! Another Howard County gem.

In addition to the new main structure, they have Historical buildings and Summer camps.

It's hard to find a space for young children that is both enriching, caring, and also willing to provide structure. I spent too many frustrating hours and hard earned dollars watching my child in activities (gymnastics, dance, soccer) where there was no structure, no discipline, and also no learning and growth. These classes were such a breath of fresh air!! I texted my Mom pictures on the first day because I couldn't believe that a group of 4 and 5 year olds were easily listening to the teacher and following a structured ballet class. Within a month, she had learned more than in a year of her gymnastics class at the time, where we were lucky if they spent 2 minutes on an actual skill and we mostly paid for the kids to throw foam blocks at one another. At the end of her first season, she performed 2 dances on stage in the gala with her class. A group of 4 and 5 year old children learned ballet and tap choreography, walked themselves on and off stage, and performed with confidence! We could see Miss Lindsay in the wings patiently demonstrating the moves, but we could also see a group of children standing proudly by themselves, looking out at their parents, and demonstrating that they had the practice, the confidence, the self-assurance, and the internal joy in what they'd learned to be able to do this on their own! Honestly, I'd pay double the monthly costs for the benefits you get from this studio, and for the absolute joy and confidence this place has fostered in my child!
