First, ignore the reviews before 2020. The barber has changed. The current barber, Nick, is young and the best barber I have had. Yes, he takes customers by appointment only. Big deal. How else is a single person supposed to manage the flow of customers and respect their time? I prefer this because I know I will be in the chair very soon after. He is meticulous. He has adapted both to my wavy hair and preferences. If the customer shows an interest in talking, he seems to be happy to join in. I am not a talker, and he leaves me to my thoughts. DO NOT GO TO MID CITY BARBER SHOP! I got a great haircut in LA, and they straight razor ed a part in, which is basically a 2 millimeter wide line where your hair is parted to give part a clean look and make it lay better. I even explained to him I had just had a haircut a week ago, and all I needed him to do was touch up the stubble in the part, so there's no reason. Whatsoever for what he did. All he needed to do was trim the obvious 2 mm line in between all the hairs that were 1"-4" long. He intentionally did his own thing. And to make it even worse, even if I did want a huge stripe down my head like I belong naked and in a jungle, he still didn't even shave it all, it's patchy as can be. I did NOT have a positive experience at this establishment. When I first arrived it was unclear where I should go as no one greeted me. I eventually just sat down in a chair and an older gentleman came up to me and asked me what I wanted and I told him I wanted to shave my head and this is my first time doing so so I have no idea what the proper protocol is for doing so. He proceeded to use the electric shaver but was very shaky in his hands and was clearly not cutting all the hairs. It was also very painful as he was pulling them out. He then went on to use a straight blade as well as a razor to shave my head. He nicked me and I started BLEEDING which is very scary and he also left many patches of hair so I look like a HOT MESS. I'm sorry but this is just unacceptable. Also the place was very dirty. There was hair on the Cape that he put across my body so when he took it off there was hair all over my clothes from other patrons. GROSS! Overall this place is not worth a cheap haircut. Is very dirty and they do not do a good job. I'll never be going back this place again as they cut me when shaving my head and don't even bother to address the issue. Horrible service overall. If I could give this place a zero stars I would. read more

I've been coming to Nick for years. He's a cool dude and is skilled with cutting hair. He's been a one man shop for about 2 years now after the older barbers (who were mentioned in earlier reviews) retired. I advise making an appointment since he's so busy but it's not hard to find a time available. 8 minutes ago My mother is the care taker for my grandfather who has Alzheimer's. This morning she had trouble getting him out the door BECAUSE HE HAS ALZHEIMERS!! My grandfather has been a patron of this barber shop for at least ten years and his barber knows HE HAS ALZHIEMERS!!!! Well he was about 5 minutes late for his appointment today and they refused to see him after they drove all the way up there. That's fine I suppose. The real problem is that the barber was inexcusably rude about it. Congratulations mid city barber you lost a regular customer today. Shame on you. I certainly hope this barber is never in a position where they are responsible for someone else's care, apparently he doesn't have empathy for others. read more

This was one of the worst experiences that I have encountered in a barber shop. I was started down without anyone speaking to me. So to break the ice I asked if walk ins were available. Upon waiting for the response. The barber asked what exactly I wanted done. Granted this was a white guy and he probably didn't know exactly how to cut my hair. I told him a fade and his response was "I don't think I'm going to satisfy what you want." Extremely shocked!!! Thanked him and walked out. 5 stars for a classic barber shop. My 86 year old Dad is very picky about his flattop. These guys are not only old school, but they are old like him, and know how to do it right. And very affordable. A vanishing bit of Americana. Traditional styles you'll have better luck with I am sure. read more

Tried out mid-city since it's just down the road. What others have said is true. Got the actual worst haircut i've ever had. Even worse then when your mother used to give you that crooked bowl cut in elementary school. Had to buzz my head when I got home to avoid spending more to fix and still look like an idiot. A great old fashioned barber shop. A haircut and a shave all together for under $20 is one of the best values anywhere.

This is a GREAT place. Been using these guys for years. They only charge $9.00 and you get all the treatment you need AND a damn good cut. Not sure who posted that bad experience but I know tons of people who use these guys repeatedly and have never been unhappy with what the results. Throw in a tip and you're only out $15.00 and that will include cut, shave, hot lather, hot towels-the works. Great conversation too if you enjoy kicking back and talking "oldies". Perfect barber shop magazines: Field and Stream, Popular Mechanics, the daily paper...nice old, heavy, metal chairs that are still very comfortable. Don't expect a fancy "do" or any snobbish attitudes. These guys are the real deal and a dieing breed. Too bad they're all beyond retirement age because this gem won't last forever. read more

Shop was dirty, hair covered the floor, and one barber took his blow dryer and blew the hair around their chairs out into the middle of the shop. Disgusting! Wish I had left then had the younger barber he asked me how I wanted my hair cut told him to take off a little. I ended up with a hair cut you get when joining the military. If that's the type hair cut you want I recommend them, also you may want to bring your own cleaning supplies. read more
