Times are a changing and nothing stays the same. After 30 years it recently closed due to modernization. What a place it was. Great movies, groceries, comedy, restaurants, and more. I will definitely miss Value Mart Grocery store, the movie theater, the unique re-sell shop, and the restaurants. It will stay closed for a while and comeback as something else in a few years, but the memories of what was will last a lifetime! read more

Well this was the spot to hang out years ago in it's payday. Presently, the theatre, Nearly New Shop, and grocery store are all that really keep it alive. There is a really nice library, a health center as well. Most other businesses have moved on. The place opened in the 60s, and has been home to a skating rink and many other businesses over time. Presently it may change ownership, leaving it's fate up in the air... So my advice is get there while you still can! read more

This is a blast from the past. They have a pay phone, Jazzercize, a library, and the old style of Subway. It's like you walked into the late 80s or 90s. Seriously though, they have a library, a ValuMarket, a second-hand store, and the best movie theatre in the city. There are some restaurants attached to the mall as well (The Backdoor, a halal buffet, the aforementioned Subway, and a Ramen spot). This is also a great place to park. read more

It was sad walking through Mid City Mall. It's been around for years and I remember it fondly through the stages of my life -- visiting the library with my parents or doing a product test at the personal opinion business, seeing a movie with friends, shopping at the thrift shop with my now husband, having my rings sized after getting married, hitting a comedy show or the Back Door. What's odd is several of those spots are there but the building feels cold and abandoned. Covid is likely causing some of this - especially for the library which is pick up only. This spot holds several places worth visiting - Ramen House, Baxter Ave Theatre, ValuMarket and the library. The Jewel Box is tiny but local, offering things to buy or repairs and sizing for jewelry and watches. Downstairs is the Nearly New thrift shop and a small gym. Jazzercize takes up a space alongside health care offices. Parking is really good, which is quite special in this part of town. Plenty of spaces on both sides of the building. You can enter from Bardstown Rd or Baxter Ave. This spot needs a little oomph in its long hallway - you could do a lot with those tall ceilings. It would also offer a great space for pop up shopping events or a host to food trucks. Add some music, maybe a few tables to sit? Add in a coffee shop? This is a prime spot to bring in foot traffic. read more

It's a fine little mall in the middle of the Highlands. It is not greater than the sum of it's parts. Some of it's parts far exceed the value of the space. The Mid City Mall is home to ValuMarket grocery store, Baxter Avenue Theaters, a small branch of the Louisville Free Public Library, a thrift shop, a comedy club, the not-a-gay-bar The Back Door, and various small restaurants (none of which I have ever patronized), small stores and some doctors offices. I have often used it as a pass through between Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue when walking in the area. The grocery store, movie theater, bar and comedy club are all decent enough that I would consider visiting them even if they were stand-alone businesses. All of the rest of them though? I could take them or leave them. It is nice to have extra businesses to make use of the central location and ample available parking. But none of those other businesses are enough of anything to draw me to the area. I guess I am mainly just disappointed that the enclosed mall building in the heart of the Highlands is not better utilized or more enticingly occupied. I can only hope that it continues to improve as time goes on. Because I certainly don't want it to go away, I just think it has potential to be so much more. read more

Mid City mall is a small-ish strip mall in the Highlands. It has improved A LOT over the past few years. It used to be pretty dingy and not somewhere I cared to be, but I will say that it has gotten a bit of a makeover on the inside, as well as a few new businesses that add a little more light to it. What's included is a Valu Market, Baxter Avenue Theatres, Caravan Comedy Club, a library, and a few other businesses. I feel like most people come here for one specific business. I have been here multiple times for rehearsal in the Dance Alliance studio, as well as visiting the movie theater. All of the businesses seem clean and well-kept. Plus, a huge parking lot! (Wait, those exist in the Highlands?) read more

This mall might be the weirdest mall you'll ever come in contact with. It's not the best mall but the smorgasbord of businesses mashed up makes this spot unique. It's more like a weird collection of businesses with the label of being a building called a mall. It's not your average mall, and for that, I'll slap four stars to it for keeping Louisville weird. Let's begin! -- Grocery store? Sure. Every mall needs a grocery store. Right? Right!?!! -- Library? Libraries are the best everywhere but do people normally visit a mall for the library? -- Food? This is an obvious mall staple. Here you have an awful Asian buffet, a mediocre to terrible Subway(And I like Subway-Just not this one), or a Bazos. -- Theater? I've been to a few malls that have theaters so I have nothing quirky to say here. -- Comedy club? Sure. Why not? Don't expect huge names but keep an eye on their schedule. Every now and then they'll get a medium sized big name. In recent memory, Hannibal Burress and Gilbert Godfried. -- Bar? The Backdoor is still a favorite with many locals. You'll find all walks of life there. -- Other random businesses? A dollar store. A yoga studio. A doctor. A thrift shop. Any of the other revolving businesses there. There's something for everyone. Side note: There is also an annual beer fest in the parking lot! Other than that, you're covered. You'll certainly find enjoyment somewhere in the Mid-City Mall. read more

Mid City Mall provides some of the much needed amenities that make living and getting almost everything you need in the Highlands a possibility. And now with the recent renovations, it's more updated and not the eyesore that it was. First off, it houses ValuMarket, the main grocery store in this stretch of Bardstown Road. The grocery is large enough to have most everything you need. It also has a small but mighty branch of the library, a thrift store, doctors office, tax service, jeweler and, funny enough, a Jazzercise and movie store. There's also a comedy club and one of my favorite dive bars, The Back Door, which is, as you would expect from the name, around back. And the movie theater! This is one of my favorite theaters, with its comfy reclining seats, bar and great selection of blockbuster and indie flicks. I've heard rumors over the years that the owners can be difficult to work with, that they don't participate in many neighborhood events. But I've noticed lately how they are trying to have more of a presence. I attended a Tyler Park Neighborhood Association wine festival in the hallway space of the building earlier this year. Other events will also take over the space. And considering that they have one of the largest parking lots in the neighborhood, which is known for being hard to park in, I get that they don't want their space taken advantage of. So whenever I want to park in the lot, I make it a point to visit a Mid City Mall spot while I'm there. And considering the plethora of shops, that's not difficult to do. If there is a zombie apocalypse and I can get as far as Mid City Mall, I will consider myself lucky. I'll have a lot of what I need nearby. read more

Mid City Mall is weird- but it is in the middle of the Highlands where the moto is "Keep Louisville Weird" so it is perfect! This little "mall" has a little of everything. There is a grocery store- Value market- which I do actually like quite a bit, a comedy club, a fitness place, a library, a consignment shop, a jewelry store, Baxter Ave theater and my fav- The Back Door which is one of the best little bars around. The parking lot is large and there is a front and back entrance with parking on both sides. The larger businesses such as the movie theater, the bar and Comedy Caravan are all easily accessible with their own doors so no need to navigate your way through the building. I really enjoy grabbing a cheap and strong cocktail at The Back Door before going to a movie at Baxter Theater. Good times! read more

This is my favorite mall. It's not my "dream mall". My dream mall smells like fresh baked bread, has taco and pizza carts, street buskers, a botanic garden, a biergarten, a canal with gondolas, a weightlessness simulator machine, no parking lot, and you leave and arrive via Wonkavator. Mid City Mall has none of those features, but it does have quite a few awesome things -- a good grocery store, a fine neighborhood library, a dive bar, and a neighborhood theater. That's a lot of sweet stuff in what might be 3 acres of land. The Highlands just wouldn't be the same without it. read more

I'm definitely a fan of Mid City Mall! I go here often to grocery shop at ValuMarket and to pick up books at the Louisville Free Public Library. I'm also a big fan of the Highlands Beer Festival, which is held at Mid City Mall each year. And, we go to movies often at Baxter Avenue Theatre, which is housed within Mid City Mall. Though the location isn't very attractive from the outside, it houses some wonderful things within. read more

Has a lot to offer with only a couple chain stores. Inside you will find a local grocery store, gym, second hand shop, jewelry store, dance studio, dentist, nail salon, Chinese takeout, and a local movie theater. This mall also has other services like a great public library, doctors office, and a HR Block tax service. The mall interior can be booked for events and there is a great local beer tasting event annually. On the sides attached to the building, but no access from the mall, you can find Comedy Caravan and the Back Door. read more

This was my first time at Mid City Mall. I honestly was expecting stores outside, and no inside middle area- boy was I shocked when I realized doors lead inside to a common area. I honestly felt like I was in the early 2000s, just due to the fact that it's not very common to see "malls" like this anymore. I found the place to very basic, but clean. The theater is at the end, and you have to exit to enter through separate doors. The doors leading to the subway were closed off, which was sort of a hassle to have to go around and exit again. I honestly thought this was a really cool "mall" and I will return to shop at valu Market & definitely catch a movie at Baxter theaters. read more

Surprise! It's a mall or a strip center or maybe a mash up of both but I finally explored some of the interior of the Mid City Mall which is located between Baxter Avenue and Bardstown Road. You will have no problem finding a parking space. There are 2 large lots which sit on either side of the Mid City Mall. I have been to Valu Market many times but had never ventured inside the mall itself. Today after a movie in the Baxter Avenue Theater (also located in the "mall") I decided to pick up a few grocery items for a Shrimp Boil!!! When I ventured in I was surprised to see a Family Dollar Store and a branch of the Louisville Public Library. There is also a dance studio and an exercise studio! WHAT? There is even a lower level which I didn't have time to explore but I can tell you I am intrigued. The building also houses a comedy club and a popular bar??? I can tell I will have to spend a little more time to visit more of the shops and report back but I can see this little spot being a quick and efficient place to pick up a few items and avoid the traffic and parking hassles that come with larger malls and shopping centers. Very interesting. Very, very interesting and the Mid City Mall has undergone a renovation in the last year or two so that is a big plus. To be continued..... read more

This tiny little mall looks a little ghetto but it gets a lot of jobs done close to home. The grocery store is a little more expensive than Kroger and has less to choose from. It does have a beer cave though and it pretty cool. I actually love to get my nails done at mid city nails. They are too fancy and you get a good value for the cost. They see me every two weeks! What I love to do is get my nails done, head down to the library ( it isn't huge but it's so convenient ) pick out a book, and if I have extra time take a look at the Nearly New Store. This store is a pretty big consignment shop that carries men's and women's cloths, odds and ends, and even furniture. They have pretty good prices and if you're like me and like to look at leisurely pace, You might just find a great treasure. Bottom line it's a different type place that is close to home that keeps me from using too much gas. It's not for everyone, but it is under construction at the moment , and who knows what changes will come!!! read more
