My neighbor works for Mighty Dog, so I felt that I should do business with them. She assured me…read morethat they would "take care of me". Once they sent me completion photos, I went to look. I found: -tar on shingles (all over the roof) -tar on skylight (see photo) -damage to fascia (see photo) -a nail hole through one gutter -a shingle bowed high enough that I could get my hand under it (see photo) -screen on the dryer exhaust (This is against code, dryer lint collects and causes problems) -multiple shingles bubbling (called "blistering") -(see photo) After contacting Mighty Dog with photos, they told me that they would make some repairs and cited several specific areas. I asked to speak to the owner, hoping this would insure proper attention. His response on the phone: -They need to do a better job of their inspection process -One of the guys put extra cement under the shingles since the house is near the beach, maybe that's why so much roofing cement tracked all over...but it is only cosmetic. I told him I don't want roofing tar all over the roof, even if it doesn't cause it to leak. He also told me that blistering shingles result from hot cement, and that I should not worry. (Several of the blistering shingles had already burst....he did not address that) **I contacted the manufacturer who told me: -industry association accepts that reason for blistering is excess roofing cement or manufacturing defect. -installation instructions for this shingle warn that use of excess cement can cause blistering Following repair visit #1: I returned and found multiple areas unfixed, some of which Phil Crutchfield (owner) had assured me in writing would be fixed. I emailed the list again and was told that they were not willing to fix anything further. The response to the nail hole in the gutter is that it is only cosmetic, as they plugged it with caulk. Also, it is my responsibility per the contract to protect the house from them. They told me that the roof had passed inspection and the town had closed out the permit. I called the town. The roof had not been through final inspection and the permit was not closed. I paid an independent inspector. I sent his report along with pictures and was told that the company would address these areas if I pay in full. I refused, citing common practice that a job should be complete before final payment and the fact that there were multiple misleading statements in prior communication from them. I would like them to finish the job and I would promptly pay. I received several letters from their lawyer. I called my neighbor and asked if she could check that the owner actually knows how I was being treated.....I also spoke to the sales guy. It was made clear that the owner, Phil Crutchfield "digs his heels in". I spoke to a lawyer who told me that the remaining bill is not worth fighting about, from a financial perspective. I paid the bill, then was advised that I owe them for legal fees in the amount of $1100. I paid because I am too busy to fight this battle, and hiring a lawyer is not worth it. They came back to the house and again left numerous items unfixed. I emailed and called. No response. Then I saw the Mighty Dog tent at a local event giving out candy. I walked over and asked if Phil was there. He was not, but my sales guy and the production manager were. I asked them why nobody would return my emails. The production manager assured me that someone would come that week to fix the remaining items, which they did. From their lawyer I received a cease and desist letter to not say negative things about them, that I am notified to only cite hard facts. I did not know that cease and desist is something companies do as a preemptive measure. I told a friend in the contracting business what was going on and he guessed that it was Mighty Dog before I told him the name of the company. He informed me that he knows several people with a similar story, including a company that he does business with. Camber Brands owns Mighty Dog Roofing of SW FL, Blingle (decorative lighting installation) and Varsity Zone HVAC. Here is the list from the independent inspector, AFTER Mighty Dog had done the first repair visit: Shingle is lifted at SE corner drip-edge Portion of shingles are lifted at ridge-vent Cosmetic blemishes present on shingles, likely occurred during unpacking of materials There are a few locations where shingles aren't installed tight together, exposing "SureNail" strip Damaged ridge shingle at N corner of roof Damaged ridge shingle at NW corner of roof Metal mesh screen present at dryer vent terminationManufacturing defects present at multiple ridge shingles Gutter damage at S overhang
