It is a fantastic festival held annually the second week of September (the weekend after Labor Day), along the Ohio River. From my understanding, this festival has been going on since 1976. It's a weekend festival of fun! So many vendors selling food, live music on the levee, a Sternwheel pageant, races, the most amazing Fireworks show you can imagine, children's activities, a car show, and of course Sternwheelers from all over the country. My advice would be to book a hotel well in advance, because they fill up fast. This is not your average small town festival, this festival brings in the crowds of roughly 100,000 people to the area. Once you attend, you'll realize why people come back again and again to this annual event!

The high point is a guided tour of the W.P Snyder, a steel hull steam powered paddle wheel towboat. The tour, escorted by a knowledgeable guide includes boiler room, engine room, crews quarters, galley, dining and living quarters and the pilot house. Also included a models of many riverboats, annotated period photographs and many artifacts from the period.

I'm a vintage photo fan, so was not disappointed in their huge collection: a priceless visual record of all types of river transportation, focusing on the famed paddle wheelers. In one sat a realistic mannequin, a man caught in the act of paddling. His homespun clothing and long, ragged hair added to the feeling we were seeing a real person. Campus Martius gave us a good picture of how people lived and worked during the early years of the Northwest Territory and Ohio: Coal mining, 18th Century factories and mills, smallpox, quilts, slavery, the Civil War, a mastadon tooth, railroads, the growth and inpact of the telegraph (the internet of its day), a timeline of Ohio history and world history. We've been to a lot of vineyards and wineries in different wine regions and countries, and honestly, we've never experienced a small vineyard with wines this good. Every wine we tasted was impressive -- so much so that we couldn't leave without taking a bottle home! What really made the experience stand out was how much they get it. Craig did an incredible job explaining each wine, how it's made, and what makes each one different. You could tell he genuinely knows and loves what he does, and that made the tasting feel personal rather than just another wine tasting. The wines, the knowledge, the atmosphere, and the overall experience were all exceptional. If you enjoy wine, Wine Tree Vineyard is absolutely a must-visit. We've been to many vineyards over the years, and this one has definitely earned a spot on our list of favorites. Do yourself a favor and go -- and be prepared to leave with a bottle (or two)!

We arrived right when they opened, and the owner, Craig, gave us one of the best wine tasting experiences we've ever had. He took the time to explain wine in a way that made the whole experience so much more enjoyable and personal. I'll admit, my husband was hesitant when we first pulled up because the outside doesn't immediately scream "winery," but I told him to trust the process. I'm so glad we did because we ended up bringing home a case of wine with nine different varieties because we couldn't pick favorites. We loved them all. Craig also told us about their wine and food pairing dinners, which sound amazing, and his wife Candy does the meal pairings. We're already talking about getting a group together and making another trip back. Bonus: they also have a very sweet dog named Cooper who was the perfect winery greeter!
