This is a beautiful campus, located less than 5 hours from New York. Campus is not huge and blends in with the surrounding business area. It's a small town. Everything is within walking distance. The folks in the town and at the school are so helpful and friendly. You walk and you get a smile or a hello. Everyone is polite and what a difference from NY. That's Vermont for you. Tip: Middlebury puts on quite a show for all the seasons. read more

This is a review of the summer intensive language program in Spanish: Awesome. Great dedicated instructors and such interesting students! I had a blast here learning Spanish, living in Spanish, partying in Spanish, you even speak Spanish when you order food in the cafeteria and talk to the people in the dorm, also while swimming nearby in the beautiful Vermont rivers and lakes. This is the college that keeps the town of Middlebury alive. With around 2,400 students, the college is well known for International Relations, Environmental Studies, and Languages. The rural school is ranked very highly as a leading liberal arts college in the Northeast. They own their own ski hill and golf course. Great education at a high price. It wasn't for me and left after my freshman year. It is a phenomenal school. I wasn't prepared for the level of academics. I also wasn't prepared for the social dynamics. I didn't fit in socially and I let that affect me academically. At 18 I wasn't prepared for classes that weren't a breeze. The minimal effort that had gotten me As in HS could only get me Cs at Midd. I actually had to put forth an effort. If you know what you are getting into Midd can be the experience of a lifetime. Get a strong support system early on. If you think you've made the wrong friends, make changes before it's too late. Never forget why you wanted to go there in the first place. Most importantly, your professors and FYC want to help you; seek them out in the beginning and develop those relationships. Hopefully the lessons I learned the hard way can help someone else NOT make the same mistakes. If you go to Midd, I wish you luck. Fall is AWESOME, winter comes early and stays so you better like the snow (and ice), and then comes mud season. Before you know it, it's May and the bugs are there and so are finals. oh and if you take an intro language your Jan Term will be WORK. Class every day and two on Fridays. Best decision I made. Best investment my parents made. ;-) Go here if you can handle the weather. (I loved the snow. But I didn't have to shovel it.) The education is phenomenal because you are in small classrooms with the professors. Not teaching assistants. Professors. I took a class with the Provost with only 12 people. I had gone to a public highschool as opposed to Choate or Chapin and didn't really know how to write. The Provost rewrote my entire mid-term paper on the Boxer Rebellion. He was amazing. ( He also gave me a passing grade bless his heart.) And a giant in his field who wanted to teach how to write. And he did. I just went back for my 20 year reunion and the professors and the President of the College (who had been a prof of mine) remembered my name. Midd kids are probably among the few who don't have a problem thinking of profs who can write references for them for grad school. You have a choice because you develop relationships with these professors over 4 years. And the students who go to Midd are super bright and curious ... about the world, about other cultures, about the environment. I love checking in with my Middlebury friends because they are scattered around the world and are doing such a wide range of jobs from teachers to CEOs to top journalists to lawyers to investors to non-profit leaders to top scientists. Such an interesting cross-section. AND the network rocks. I've gotten most of my jobs via my Middlebury connections NOT my business school connections. Perks include great study abroad programs (want to learn Chinese, no problem. Arabic? Russian? no problem), their own ski bowl, a winter semester with fun classes. Go blue! read more

I have never been hungrier than the three days I spent at Middlebury. I have celiac disease, and the dining services could not have been less helpful. While things were haphazardly labeled, the lack of consistency and omission of certain allergens on products that were clearly chock full of them made me feel unsafe eating any of the prepared foods. The "gluten-free" sections were tiny-- in Atwater, the gluten free bread shared a shelf with regular bread, which is actually worse than just not having any gluten free options. The cold tortillas and bread, with no designated toaster or sandwich station, were disgustingly unappealing. I spent three days there and had to go out to eat just to avoid fainting from hunger. I only ate hardboiled eggs and apples the whole time. Absolute misery. The experience made me extremely grateful for the diligence and options at my college and very sad on behalf of the Middlebury students who suffer from celiac and have no options.
