I called them out as I needed a quote for a counter flashing for my fireplace. I had just had a new roof put on my home. I waited a week to have a person out. The tech who came out was very professional and I have no problem with him. He did then ask for a $125.00 inspection fee. I just needed a quote. I wasn't told about a fee on the phone. I told him I wasn't interested in anything from them and sent him on his way. I had two other companies out and they charged me nothing. Midgley's met with our builder on site to confirm a fireplace could be placed in our existing 2 story chimney. We purchased the unit and removed the existing firebox as we were told. When Midgley's came out a second time we we're told we would need to remove the entire chimney at a $10,000 dollar expense. They never delivered the unit but charged me a $2,000 restocking fee. Their mistake cost me. I am very disheartened that a local business would charge us for their mistake. read more

Answered questions we had about maintenance and condition of our fireplace and overall it was a quick and painless visit. Sold my dad a faulty pellet stove, confirmed by the tech that came out to replace a circuit breaker after only ONE MONTH of owning it, he even said they sold it and knowingly installed with defective part. Now after having a tech here, it went out again. Nice job Midgleys. You will be hearing from us yet again In the morning, and I am certain we will receive the unprofessional customer service as we have thus far. I've bought two Valor gas fireplaces from Midgeley's, and generally I like the units, which is why I bought the second one. But I've found their service to be lacking. Recently one fireplace stopped working and I'm advised that service is booked almost a MONTH out. This is for my heating system, in November. This situation suggests two things: (1) too many of their products need service, and (2) they need to hire more service staff. At this point if I need another fireplace I'll look elsewhere. read more

I have my wood stove serviced each year during the off-season, when Midgley's provides the service at a reduced rate. They call early in the year for the repeat customers to ask if we want to be scheduled during the off-season to get that rate. I don't have to remember to call them (always a nice bonus these days). Plus, I always feel particularly lucky when I open my door to see that John is here to clean my stove. He is friendly, thorough, attentive, and highly competent and he goes out of his way to make sure that I and my cat will be safe during the process (e.g., pointing out when the cloth he lays down is slippery, ensuring that I will keep my cat away from the front door when he will have to leave the door wide open). He remembers his clients and our particular needs or quirks, even if we miss a year. He will suggest that I try anything he has adjusted to ensure it will be perfect for my needs and abilities. If I were to create the perfect chimney sweep, John would be the result! He's fantastic and he works for a great company, too. I bought my stove at Midgely's 20 years ago and it remains as good as new. read more

After the same problem happening 3 times, and the "bandaid" service applied to my fireplace, I won't be returning to this company. They will not warranty their service, so when your "fix" fails to hold, expect to continue to pay for them to come out again. Never once did any technician test any parts or components to verify that they were working properly. They require a credit card up front since, as their technician told me, "some people don't want to pay." I can see why they don't. Who wants to pay someone who comes out multiple times and continues to fail to fix a problem? I hired a competitor instead, and yes, their thorough testing of the unit diagnosed the problem that Midgley's failed to identify after multiple tries. Save your money. We just bought a new propane grill from Midgley's and the experience was excellent. Rita walked us through several brands and knew the features of ALL of them, inside and out. She took time to understand our needs, helped us to narrow down our choices, pulled several price estimates together for our consideration and even helped to load the grill in the car when we came back to buy! We felt like we should at least look a at a couple of other places around town and were so disappointed - from limited stock in the showrooms, to total lack of product knowledge, every other store left us wishing we'd shopped online. So happy to find a local company putting the time, and money into providing the right level of training so their staff is ready and able to assist customers. I ordered a wood stove from them. They were less than helpful in making sure that i got one that fit my firebox. I had to do the research to determine...not my experience talking to their competitors, but, I wanted a Lopi and was forced to get from Midgleys. i initially ordered a stove way too big for my little cabin, ...mainly because I rcd no direction according to the firebox constraints...th en upon changing to a smaller stove...you would have though I had insulted them. Their customer service is horrible and not friendly...i mean really! Their price was good for the stove, though Rich's in Seattle had a better promo with Travis Industries ...which was really strange....( they make most of the stoves) than Midgleys, but did not want to transport in my pick up truck 300 miles. Great inventory, unfriendly service from ordering, to he manager ( woman) that dealt with the payment. It is time to remember why you are in business...service with a smile goes a long way! read more

Our gas fireplaces pilot lite shut off suddenly. We shut off the gas and called NWNG. They recommended having the fireplace serviced. We called Midgley's and scheduled an appointment in a timely manor. Our serviceman, Andrew, was on time and very professional. He repaired a cracked log and cleaned and painted the fire box...brushing rusted areas. Our fireplace looks brand new and now running efficiently. Thank you Andrew and Midgley's....we'd give them a 5 Star rating. read more

If your considering a fireplace or stove of any kind, DON'T GO TO MIDGLEYS!!!! Before we knew there were options we installed two fireplaces and always suffered from horrible customer service. Even other vendors had trouble dealing with their higher than Mighty attitude. We found their competitor and couldn't be happier!!! I laugh when I see their TV commercials touting customer service. This is not a one time observation but a horrible experience which occurred over one year. This process should be enjoyable. Well, they cleaned our fireplace but didn't close it all the way when they were done, and because of that we started to see soot stains growing on our walls in our living room. About six months later we called another company and they closed it for us. They didn't even charge us for the service. We ended up having to re-paint the whole living room. When I called Midgley's about having them help pay for the paint job, I got handed off and they never called back. I left three messages but they never got back to me. I'm not upset, I'd be skeptical if I were them to, but still, I cant give them more than one star. read more

Midgleys knows grills and stoves! There was no high pressure, just a smiling staff who really know their stuff! The showroom was impressive with all the various stoves and inserts. The upstairs at Midgleys was filled with all kinds of grills, charcoal and wood pellets. I am a local business owner, but I wanted to buy local to support our businesses and have service and support. After about 4 1/2 years, one of the two blowers started making noise and is going out. While I though the unit wasn't that old, but I thought, "no problem, it can be serviced"... Just to check I found the part numbers and prices on-line, and I called Midgley's to asked what their prices were and while a little more money, I thought they were close enough. I asked what the service labor would be, and was told 1 hour plus travel one way at $120 an hour. I thought "OK, it's probably worth my time to let them take care of it". Then it went down hill from there. I was sent to the service scheduler and I was told my appointment would be beyond mid January, over 7 weeks in the future... I expressed my concern about being out so far in the future, but I was told, "that's what it is". I stopped by their office to pick up the parts (just to make sure they would still have them), and asked for the manager to again question why it takes over 7 weeks to get a tech out for a 1 hour service call, and that "my customers" would never tolerate or understand that either. I was told by 1 person that it is really a 2 hour service call, and another gentleman interjected and informed me that 1/2 of Eugene comes in this time of year (in November), that they can't get anyone to work on fire places and in general, if my business were seasonal, I would understand. In the end, since I picked up the parts they wanted to know if I wanted to cancel my service appointment. I told them No, not at this point, but I guess I have almost 2 months to figure it out and see if I can install it myself, and would let them know. Bottom Line, initially I liked them, and they installed the gas insert after we did a home remodel, but felt I was the treated like the bad guy for questioning the 7+ weeks service call request, and now they don't really need me as a customer. Buy from them if you want, but don't expect support (in a timely fashion) if you need them after the sale. I was looking for a source of back-up heat during power outages. Midgley's suggested a wood burning fireplace insert. I picked out one I liked and they came to my home and measured and wrote a bid for a large Lopi unit. I was reading the specs and it said it heats up to 2000 SF. I went back in with the signed proposal and asked if they were sure this unit would be okay for my 1600 SF house. They said it would never work in my house, it would be way too hot. Nobody had ever asked me how big my house was. Huge disaster averted because of me asking some questions. So they rebid me on the medium insert and I again went in with two more questions, is there a choice of cap styles and is the liner kit insulated? The person who answers these was not there so I wrote a note on my proposal and left it for him. I waited a week and then followed up with an email. I waited another week and went in and they said they could not work with me because I ask too many questions. WHAT??? A $7000 insert and you already made a huge mistake and I can't ask questions? But if they had decided not to do the job, why didn't they tell me so that I could move forward? This is kind of how they operate, they are very demeaning to the customer and cannot even be bothered to be considerate. read more

I would never choose to go through Midgley's again. A few minors things which were really more of an annoyance than anything was; 1. They were initially very easy to get ahold of and get scheduled to come for the initial install. We had to pay the remaining balance at that appt (as expected) but after that we couldn't get ahold of them for three work days during regular business hours to schedule them to come back out for the "quick" final install. And 2. During the final install they turned off the gas of course and said they relit the hot water heater, which they didn't so we woke up to no hot water in the morning. Again annoyances. But the final straw was THEIR CARELESS INSTALL! Again I mentioned we have a natural gas insert and we paid "the professionals" to do the job correctly. They carelessly didn't screw the fireplace insert hose fitting to the natural gas line! The whole house smelled of gas and thankfully we were home to catch it since you are supposed to leave the fireplace on for a full 24 hours after install. Midgleys said the fireplace was safe to use. We called the natural gas company who found the problem right away since it was such an obvious and careless oversight. I wish we would have used Ambassador Stoves in Springfield, they were much more attentive and up front with the whole install process. read more

Expensive but what really prompts this negative review is their lack of customer appreciation. We contacted them (two weeks for an appointment) to take a look at an issue we were having with our pellet stove. It would not allow us to adjust the heat. As with many mechanical devices, it worked just fine when the repairman came out. He adjusted it up and down for 45 minutes, said "it must have been stuck" and charged $85. We had just paid them $300 for service and repair two weeks prior. I called the office, considering we are repeat customers, and asked about the charge when we were not even sent in a direction of a diagnosis. The woman on the phone was argumentative and inflexible. The stove will do that again and we WILL NOT be calling Midgley's. We will not be calling them for future service, repairs or purchases and we will be telling our friends that we do not recommend them. That seems like a lot of business traded for being inflexible and not doing the right thing but they don't seem to care about that. read more

The customer service is horrifying. They are fine when you go into the store, but once they take your deposit all bets are off. I'm November we purchased a lovely gas stove, a gas grill and a fire pit. They didn't arrive when expected so we called and two weeks later the stove came. Two weeks later (and no apologies or explanation) the grill came. The fire pit never came. When we called and called and called, they first said they didn't have any record of us ordering a fire pit. Then they found the order but kept delaying the delivery (sometimes due to weather, but still without any prioritization or recognition of the fact that we had been waiting for this long. In the second week of January we have our fifth or sixth delivery date. When we call to say that this is really too much and if they can't bring it in the next day or two, they need to cancel our order and they say they will charge us a $500 restocking fee. And they are serious. Be very, very careful with this store. read more

This company is a joke. I asked them to come to my home to give me an estimate to have an existing gas line in my house extended into my kitchen because I wanted to replace the electric range with a gas range. The estimator they sent was unfriendly, did not introduce himself, nor did he seem to be eager to have my business. He went into my crawl space for a short time, and then left without knocking on my door to speak to me. He simply took off. After a period of time, I received an email from him that contained an estimate for the work. I responded by letting him know I would be interested in hiring Midgley's for the project, but I needed to know when they would be able to do the work. I never received anything in the way of a reply. I ended up hiring another contractor for the project, who treated me with respect and appreciated my business. I would never recommend Midgley's to anyone. Their customer service and business practices couldn't be worse. read more

Even better-- the price was $100 dollars less than the other company that came out -- and NEVER followed up on the service call -- even after I called them to see what was up. They just wanted us to leave the store.. They would not even send us the paper we signed and asked for a copy. I will NEVER use this company again! I bought a fireplace insert 9 years ago from this company that cost several thousand dollars. You would think that when I have to return to replace a cracked piece of glass and the gasket around the doors that they would give me some suggestions as to how to do it correctly. After all, it's just a matter of a small hand tool and adjusting screws. But since it involves a $93.00 new piece of specialty glass, I wanted to make sure I was doing it right. They were rude, unfriendly, and completely unwilling to even tell me whether I was tightening the screws too much as I stood at their counter performing the operation! After one salesperson handed me the gasket, he turned without a word and got on the phone. I wasn't sure if he was coming back, so I waited a bit. When I asked if anyone else could help me, a woman came out of the back room and asked if she could write up an invoice for service to put the gasket in. I took the whole thing home, and got it done, but the doors wouldn't close. I called to ask what I needed to do and Ferrin, the service manager, said they could do a service call! I said I would just bring the doors in. He said no, they don't have enough people and nothing was free! NOTHING! Not even friendliness or good customer service! These people only care about making a buck and not whether they can help their customers! Too bad they are choosing to be part of what's wrong with this country instead of being part of the solution. read more
