177 steps of local flavor in Silver Lake filled with many steps and footsteps past, present, and future. The Micheltorena Stairs are a local and tourist must. Bright, vibrant, filled with art, tags/graffiti, hearts, and messages with a ton of lush green plant life on both sides of this ascending (or descending) "permanent paved escalator." Jamie W. and I had big plans to scale all the hidden staircases of Silver Lake. Yep, like we had thighs of steel or something. Well, that dream lasted about twenty minutes when we walked up a couple of the labyrinth streets and pooped out. However, we did manage to make these colorful steps because they're on a pathway right off Sunset. Painted by artist Corinne Carrey (who apparently painted several of the stairways in the area), these stairs go up 177 steps, and its most famous design element are the painted hearts on the first flight. Although a bit frayed and faded, they capture the hip vibe Silver Lake so easily emanates. So if like us, you have energy for only one set of stairs, this'll do. RELATED - Exploring LA? Your body can stand almost anything. It's just your mind and heart that you have to convince especially going up these stairs. Lol. Los Angeles is no stranger to public street and public art. And this colorful stairs is one of them. The Arts has been a passion of mine since I took that Art 101 course in college, sixty-nine years ago. This Heart Stairs is famous among locals and tourist which is perfect spot to chill while you sip your coffee or take a photo for the gram. Overall, I like it and highly recommend you visit.

Great spot to get your steps in. Plenty of scenic photo opportunities as well. Love to come here to get some outdoor exercise.

We came across these stairs while walking our dogs, grabbing a coffee and shopping all the boutique stores. They are so very cute, really clean and located right off Sunset Blvd, not much walking required. The area is very up and coming and absolutely adorable with so many stores to visit and support. Parking was a bit tough on a Sunday afternoon but we finally found a spot and It's metered but no money required on Sundays. Great place to walk your dogs, we felt safe walking, other dogs were leashed, friendly and it's very easy to buy things you don't need! Enjoy!

Very nice artwork. Stairs go all the way up to the top. A must visit when in LA. There are plenty of picture opportunities. Thec while block also has murals that are nice.

June 6th 2024, looked clean and fresh colors

June 6th 2024, loved that the colors looked fresh and free of any markings. Come to these stairs whenever our family goes out to the LA area.

Never heard of secret stairs here even after being in Socal for basically forever but here goes: go at least once and then tell your friends! Honestly there's not much to look at other than sad stairs and then you wonder why you even bothered to come to see dad stairs unless you're sad too and then you can see how this is pointless and sometimes coming to these stairs is pointless but you can also be fulfilled by not know these stairs exist until I told you they exist if you follow my yelp feed Annnnnnnnnnnnd???? LOL I'm kidding, I thought it'd be a good place for insta pics and that's really the whole point of it. Come right at sunset before it goes down and it's perfect lighting. Not much else other than the stairs are just chalk full of graffiti nearby contrasting the colorful stairs that you see. Still, come by if you can free park on the street or if you don't know where to take your next photo op.

Cute colorful heart stairs in Los Angeles. Nice place to take pics for Valentine's Day!

Literally on Micheltorena and Sunset. We followed Yelp Silver Lake Stairs and did a 20 mins walk to no where. On our way back to our car my husband spotted out the stairs which was literally down the street from our car. I think we would of not missed it if one we didn't follow YELP address to Silver Lake Stairs and if there wasn't road construction. The construction did block of the view of the stairs. It was a nice stroll up the stairs overlooking the city.

    Here it is!

Los Angeles has beautiful stairs, too! Previously, I thought that only San Francisco had nicely painted and decorated stairs. Ah...so... There are artsy people in LA, too! Wow! Alana had this cool place bookmarked, so we made a quick stop and found metered street parking across the street! Yay! These set of stairs are located in the Silver Lake area. There was a lot of traffic, so we actually passed the stairs since it was off to the right side of one of the main streets. Go slowly and you'll see It! At the top, there's a nice view of the skyline. We went around sunset time and I was blown away by the colorful sky, the designs of the clouds, and the dark outlines of the palm trees... wow!!! Just think... this is a free site and some people run up these stairs for exercise (a guy ran past us... the show off!!!)! Amazing! A plain thoroughfare can become a tourist attraction! LOL!

A lot of graffiti now :(

I went back to my hometown neighborhood to find these cute colorful stairs and they were indeed very cute! I walked up, all the way up for some exercise and then came back down for a pic. They've been marred by some graffiti, but maybe I'll come back one day to restore them to beauty.

It is the most likely staircases to be spotted by chance, adding to the hundreds secret stairs of the staircase's popularity in LA. It comprises 177 stairs, and the first flight takes you up to Larissa Drive, cross over and there is another set of steps. The Micheltorena Stairs can be seen when you are driving down Sunset Blvd in the Silver Lake area if you happen to be looking up the right direction, the heart shape and colorful steps.

It's not exactly a park, rather a public attraction but it's completely free! All you really have to do is find parking in the area! It's mainly meters but if you can find a business with a parking lot in the area then there you go!

The sun was out but we enjoyed the exercise and the view. There is street parking offered at the bottom and once you go up the short dirt road you'll immediately see the stairs. From the bottom it can look quite steep but once you start going up you get used to the feel. The worst part is that the stairs are all uneven and some are pretty high (especially for kids/short adults like me), but overall the hike is pretty quick. For those in excellent physical shape, it probably only takes ~10 mins to get to the top. For those who might need to take more pauses, ~20 mins. As you walk up, there are a couple of areas you can pull over on the side and catch your breath on. Once you're at the top, there are a ton of great views and photo op spots. Heading down was a little confusing because we tried to avoid the stairs at first and use the dirt roads, however the path we picked didn't lead all the way back to the bottom so we just ended up taking the stairs for half of it.

I like to get my workouts in first thing in the morning, that way the endorphins are flowing if serotonin levels are high your energies up there and I feel much more productive, but I can't always do it. I shoot for three times a week. I love that. I have a free resource to enjoy nature's beauty and marvel at how quiet the city is when it's sleeping. It's a beautiful hike. Highly suggested. I don't like to go on the weekends. There's too many people that come from other places to go there so it's crowded so, if I do it on the weekend, I'm doing it very early in the morning so I don't Have to deal with so many people... I find that I don't people well anymore and I don't like a lot of people around me! They have also created like an extension to where it goes into another part of a different park. There is a cafe/ convenience store across from the campground where you can also purchase your day use park pass for $5. I experienced a foggy day, which gave a cooling effect to my hiking. Restrooms are vault toilets, so unpleasant smells and a mess are a given. The lake has lots of swampy algae, therefore not appropriate for swimming or water sports. However, they do allow fishing with permit. I am a nature enthusiast and it was saddening to see the lack of humans respect for nature, with graffiti and trash in some areas of the park. Crystal lake definitely could use more funding to preserve its natural beauty. The loveliest part is listening to woodpeckers as they work, watching an eagle fly above with a fish in its talons, and treading quietly not to startle the squirrel who is crossing my path. Perfect hike for a hot day…read more I love waterfall hikes and listening to the sound of calm, running water. The added challenge on these hikes is the multiple stream crossings. I brought some hiking poles which helped with balance and probing for loose rocks and logs. If you want to get parking in the lower lot, it's best to come before 8AM. We found parking in the second lot. An Adventure Pass or Day Pass is required. Parking is enforced. A car received a ticket for being in a No Parking zone. The start of the trail is nicely shaded. The second half is a hilly, narrow, sun exposed path which routes back into the canyon toward the Lower Switzer Falls. I'm glad they had fencing on some narrow and steep parts of the trail. We encountered an active rattlesnake which headed down the mountain, so be on the lookout. Overall, the hike takes about 3 hours for 5.5 miles. The additional hike back up to the parking lot was about 1/4 of a mile. Note: if you need to use the restroom, it's best to bring your own toilet paper and to go before you start your hike. What impressed me most about this trail is that it's almost fully covered by shade. We went in the late afternoon, and I'd say probably 80-85% of it is covered. Very impressive! Here are some useful tips: 1. There are three parking lots: two are next to the highway, and one is near the hiking entrance. I'd recommend getting a parking pass if possible. 2. There are only three restrooms at the beginning of the trail, so use them when you see them. 3. If you're aiming to go to the waterfall, make sure to look for the signs. Some signs aren't very clear, so we had to stop and ask other hikers frequently. Luckily, people there are super friendly and happy to help. Just pay attention to your surroundings. 4. The trail is dog-friendly, but dogs must be on a leash. 5. Waterproof hiking boots are recommended. All in all, it's a fun trail. It's a great place for a picnic and camping, and it's very close to the stream. Great for kids, families, and pets!

The stairs serves well as an easy hike or an exercise spot for those who love stair climbing. One thing I did not expect is that the stairs go up and down. Rather than take you higher and higher, some of the stairs just takes you across hills which for me is disappointing. Also, I did not find the houses along the trail particularly scenic. They are probably nice for Pasadena but definitely a far cry from what you see in nearby Arcadia, San Marino, La Canada, etc. Overall, I consider the Secret Stairs a local attraction. It's a worth a visit if you live less than 20 minutes away and its a fun neighborhood novelty but it's definitely not worth your time if you don't live in the area. Parking: I parked on the street on Elmwood which is the beginning of the trail, but I don't highly recommend it. It's not a particularly well maintained street and it is super narrow and steep without proper curbs/sidewalks. There is also a sign that says 'Tow Away on Red Flag Days'.
