Lively atmosphere and gets very busy. 1/2 rack ribs with a slight crust exterior, tender and smokey, seasoned perfectly. Smoked turkey breast was MOIST with the perfect amount of smoke. Stand out sauces were the Eastern & the Hot. Loaded baked potato w sharp cheddar sauce, beef brisket, topped with house made fried onion rings. And not to be missed is their next level fresh banana pudding. Made with care and fresh ingredients, was divine. Everything was delicious and exceeded our expectations in this famous land of BBQ. Although conveniently just off the I-95, plan for around an hour to dine. Ample parking. Two picnic tables outside. Drive-through.

The taco seasoning on my small slice of meatloaf was odd and really out of place in a BBQ restaurant. I wouldn't order this again, even if it would come out of the kitchen hot and fresh. My BBQ boiled potatoes were also leftovers from the 'frig. I don't think the kitchen even tried to warm them before serving my potatoes as they were just cold. If these had been served hot or at least warmed, I think they would have been good, leftovers or not. The restaurant was also freezing cold inside. Despite the outdoor temperature being in the low-50s, the air conditioner was cranked up necessitating wearing my coat during my stay in the restaurant. After taking my order, I didn't see the server again until she dropped off the check. Today's meal really illustrates a failure in the management of this Daddy D's BBQ. Two stars is a very generous rating.

The exit where this Smithfield's is located is one of the last good stops in the drive from Raleigh to Wilmington and unlike the other places around, Smithfield's is one of the few sit-down places. With a large restaurant with plenty of long tables, it's great for a group. You order at the front and you listen to your number to pick up your food and sit. Prices are reasonable ($8-10 for most plates/platters) but the plates are humongous and I wish there were slightly smaller options for people who can't finish 3 huge chicken tenders and three sides. Food was cooked to order but still kind of seemed like they were popping frozen chicken into a fryer and there was a lot of extra fat in the tenders. Fries and hushpuppies were the standouts, with the hushpuppies light & fluffy inside. Baked beans were forgettable but at least not vinegar based like everything else. Sweet tea was basically pure sugar and needed to be cut with lots of unsweetened tea to be palatable. Brunswick stew that my friend ordered was the most reasonably portioned item but really just seemed like all the meats this place cooks thrown together in an unappetizing-looking tomato-based stew. I would not come here again by choice, but it did fit the need of having something passable to eat from a clean restaurant right off the exit when we needed it.

Being a fan of non-chain local spots, all of them have their quirks and this one's is pretty simple: They have 2 front doors yet one is the entrance and one is the exit. Both are clearly marked and steps from each other; impossible to miss. Upon entering, you seat yourself, a friendly waitress takes your drink order then its on you to lay back your ears and dive in the buffet. Next nifty quirk are the buffet plates: Real glass, y'all! Plenty of places claim to have soul food but how many of them serve up food on proper plates with proper utensils?! As you can see from my plate, all the bases are covered and you won't leave hungry. Trout, fried chicken, baked chicken, sketti, Mac & cheese, slaw, tater salad, collards, black eye peas, taters and gravy... Now unlike most places I must admit, if you have it in you to do so -leave room for desert!- I didn't get a pic of the 2 different types of cake I ate so someone else can brag on those after taking my advice to stop on in. I even joked that the reason we can't have places like this in the city is because people like me would order a coffee and pay for the buffet, but simply sit and eat a little over a quarter of one of those splendid cakes : D

It's a small business and most people ordered to go. Very few tables and parking. We walked in as a party of 4 and they didn't have seating, but we were waved over by a local to share his table and gladly took him up on his offer. Come to find out he was a local columnist and seems to be known very well by the community. We had great conversation, over a great meal. The owner came out and chatted with us for a little. It's been family owned since 1930! Everyone we encountered was very friendly. Including the local sheriff who was the cashier. We were greeted by a friendly server and a basket of hush puppies and a bucket of honey butter. We ordered a little of everything. True NC pork BBQ, southern style fried chicken, fried shrimp, boiled butter potatoes, colla greens, mac and cheese and cole slaw. EVERYTHING was good. The only let down was the mac and cheese. We were hoping for a baked mac and cheese but it was more of a velveeta style rou mac and cheese. Still good, just not what was pictured or what we prefer. This is a super easy stop off int. 95, maybe a mile off the exit. We will most definitely be stopping in every year as we head south. I would suggest you do the same!

But it was worth those few extra minutes for front row seats of the action on the tarmac below. We arrived during their lunchtime buffet hours, although you can also order from their regular menu. I'm not usually a buffet person, but since I wanted to try a little bit of everything it was definitely the way to go. For $18 I got some ribs, pulled pork, and BBQ chicken. Not to mention, a side of their delish cornbread, and a scoop of two of my Southern faves: mac & cheese and collard greens. Sadly, I was too full of the deliciousness to make a second trip, but if I had it would have been for a heaping pile of mashed potatoes and a generous scoop of their homemade peach cobbler. If you like airplanes and BBQ, add this to your list for your next visit to the area. They also have a full bar, though on this hot day we were happy with bottomless refills of their refreshing sweet tea.
