Dr. Nottage bedside manners are not acceptable and her failure to review my medications caused the cancelation of my eye Surgery on November 17th by the anesthesiologist and head RN of surgery. Her office called my referring Doctor and said they will not being able to my surgery and didn't give a reason, so now I am back to square one. read more

When arriving there was an elderly lady with presumably her daughter and they had been waiting forever and this is at 3:30!!!! My word!! I have had major surgeries done before and barely waited 15 minutes!! My theory is that, albeit anecdotal, there are a lot of elderly patients that come here and perhaps they take advantage of that fact. Maybe that they "have no where else better to go" type of aditude. OK, yes, perhaps that's a bit hyperbolic but this place needs to stop wasting people's time. The appointments take almost 3 hours every time. The doctor really need to streamline the test and get people in and out better.

What could they improve? EVERYTHING. 3 hours for every fucking appointment??? Seriously??? Manage your time with doctors better because the waiting rooms are BULLSHIT. There's no need for me to be there from 9-12 and having to be dilated 3 fucking times before I see the doctor. NO EXCUSE. I would also like to add if you're having a minor emergency don't bother calling them because they don't GIVE A FUCK. They refuse to see me now because they called yesterday stating they won't see me unless I pay my past due balance. I cannot afford all these extra appointments, which I probably don't even need because lord knows the doctors these days only care about making money and not making patients better so they keep coming back. I have been coming here for years now, i've had a cataract surgery and a vitrectomy and appointments beyond the number you can imagine. I HAVE BEEN BEYOND PATIENT AND KIND WITH THIS COMPANY. Knowing what I know now, I would have never stepped foot in this SHIT HOLE. Receptionists are doing "Hail Hitler" hand signals in the waiting room and having not so appropriate conversations for everyone in the waiting room to hear. Dr. Nottage is a fucking bitch with no bedside manner WHATSOEVER. DO NOT see her unless you want to be profiled and embarrassed, when in reality she needs to be fucking humbled. She was supposed to do my cataract surgery last year and the consult I had with her, needless to say i've never had such a horrible experience with a doctor IN MY LIFE. Save yourself the headache and go elsewhere like I did, no way in hell was she touching me after our consult together. Ended up getting the surgery done with Michael Hopen from IU which was also out of network for my insurance by the way. He was wonderful and amazing but naturally had to pay everything out of pocket for him. Everything was great for a while until this last November when I found out I needed a vitrectomy due to bleeding in the back of my eye. Mind you I am 23, young and nervous having eye problems to begin with so this whole scenario has been very scary for me. I saw Dr. Ankur Shah and he was great initially. He did a great job on my vitrectomy. He really needs to work on his one on one with patients though. Speaks too fast, not enough information and doesn't even ask if you have questions because he's clearly in a rush ALWAYS. He has been making me come to nonstop appointments for "pressure issues" and it's still a concern. Mind you, it took them 4 days to send the new drops over to my pharmacy, and called them nonstop and nobody ever called back or gave a shit. Shah keeps prescribing more and more drops instead of trying to get to the root of the problem, and making me come in so he can make more money off of me, assuming because I am young. I will be going elsewhere from now on because this place is a joke, they DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR WELLBEING. Please do not waste your time with this shithole. They don't care about making you healthy, they care about being wealthy. read more

We have not even seen the doctor, yet. This is all dealing with ancillary employees. We never received the "packet" of paperwork from the office. If we had, we could have made an educated decision regarding our appointment. Instead, it was a surprise to us that the appointment was to last 2-3 hours. We own our own business, and run it ourselves on a daily basis. Had we known we might have been able to reschedule or reassign how our day went. We could not afford to go to this appointment on this day! When my husband informed the front staff that we needed to get going, the curly red haired woman at the desk called on the phone back to "the very aggressive "fixer" named Lana. Who came out to reassure the front desk lady, that she Lana, would take care of it, she (Lana) had her back. She didn't call my husbands name, he had stepped to the bathroom and I don't think she realized that she was performing in front of his wife. When he came back to the waiting room, she came back out, called his name and said to both of us, "is there an issue?" It completely caught us off guard. If there was an issue ( and at that point we were unaware that there was) throwing an aggressive, rude, unprofessional employee at it was the wrong tactic! She never introduced herself, nor provided information regarding her role in the business. For all I knew she was rude, aggressive janitor. Then we found out about the 2-3 hour time frame. As we were trying to figure out if we could work it out and get it done, she again rudely asked if we were going to continue with the appointment. We went to the first test... to test peripheral vision. It was not explained well. My husband is a very smart man. He was confused about the instructions that she was giving him and not explaining what she needed for him to do, but instead, laying her hands upon his jaw and manually moved his head. This is a grown man who does not need to be physically manipulated with no respect. Then after feeling that action was necessary she told him to push the button when he saw a light. AND LEFT THE ROOM. I do not believe he understood nor grasped the concept for this test. Effective communication only happens when both or all parties understand! After just the right eye was tested( the affected eye) we had to go. We went to reschedule the appointment, for November 30. That is over a month and a half away. No waitlist option. No words of encouragement that we might be able to get in sooner. We were told we could call in every once in a while to see if anyone had canceled. Please remember, we still have not met the doctor. Based on good business practices, if I had other options I certainly would take them! Because when it comes right down to it this is just another poorly run business. Your front of the house (first people that people come in to contact with) should be professional, kind, helpful and non threatening. Unfortunately, you may have a "monopoly" here, but if you had any comparable competition, I would certainly bet that would urge completely different style and attitude for your staff! In the last 2 years I have purchased 4 pair of glasses from here. Three of the 4 are breaking, 2 with lens issues and one sunglasses frame has broken twice in the same spot. Unfortunately, they are only able to be replaced one time, so now I have sunglasses that were over $300 dollars and lasted less than 6 months. As I explained to the optician this would be expected from my cheapo Zennis, but not from so called "quality eyewear." I was referred to Dr. Minturn with a cancer diagnosis after having to go to my appointment ALONE because my husband wasn't allowed to go with me due to Covid, he patted me on the arm and told me I didn't have cancer, but proceeded to require me to see him every three months. At the end of one year, he said you have cancer but it isn't big enough to treat. WTF. I got a second opinion at Ohio State and they said I was urgent and I had surgery and am on the road to recovery. This place is slow, rude, and has antiquated equipment. Go ANYWHERE else. read more

First time needing to use Mid West Eye. Very friendly at check in. We waited in the first area. About 5 min later we were called to the back and put in another waiting area. 5 min later taken into a room to dilate my eyes and do an eye test. Taken to another waiting area to wait for my my eyes to dilate. Next room they looked at the back of my eye and took pictures. Another small wait and taken to the next room to take more pictures of my eye and inject e with dye. More photos of how the dye moved thru my eye. Another small wait and we were back in the room with Dr Frank. Nothing major wrong with my eye but we need to keep a check on it to see if it changes. I thought everyone was friendly, professional and did their jobs very well. We were there about 2 hours. On our way out the main waiting room was packed. No issues very happy. read more

Don't schedule a time if you work. One of the eye specialists, Dr. Frank, Indianapolis, is not open after 1:00 pm?! They want to dilate my eyes which means that I must take a half day off at work. When I called the Institute to see if there is another doctor in the building with different hours, I was told that they cannot look at a different doctor's schedule without a referral. Meaning that I would have to get a separate referral for EACH doctor to find the right time "because each doctor has a separate office". So, they are really not an "Institute". They are an office building with completely different doctors that share the same admin staff and floor space. Kind of like a Ford dealer saying he can't do an oil change in the afternoon on your model of Ford because the mechanics have separate contracts to work on different models.... and they can't tell you the schedule of any of the mechanics. If I could give negative stars I would. Dr. Nottage is the worst doctor I have ever worked with. I also see Dr. Shah and I really enjoyed him and had no issues with him a few weeks prior. I was referred to her for a cataract surgery and mine is quite complicated. When my boyfriend and I walked in, I checked in and everything was great and smooth, then the front desk woman and everyone behind the glass was super loud and joking around and making racist comments referring to Hitler and making hand gestures; WE WERE BAFFLED. I was at this appointment 2 out of 3 hours just waiting to see Nottage and so wish I never did. She made both my boyfriend and I feel unheard and did not respect us whatsoever or the 4 different nurses she had, ordering me around and not giving me any explanation as to what was even going on, no explanation of tests and began getting frustrated with me because my eyes are extremely sensitive and couldn't keep my eyes open with bright ass light in it! We were pretty visibly upset and Nottage couldn't handle the swearing my boyfriend and I were using out of frustration, which I thought was appalling because she literally threatened to leave the room because of it, we were being treated like garbage. Nobody introduced themselves, people kept coming into our room on accident. It was an overall upsetting experience and I will not be seeing her ever again, she made me feel like I was the problem but refused to let me speak and spoke over me. Not sure what the deal was but I left the office in tears because my condition is kind of concerning and then she'd tell me no and then contradict herself again that it is concerning. I genuinely fear for my condition because it's so back and forth and nobody seems to know what to do with me and it's very frustrating. No reassurance was given and put me into fear of doing anything about my eye. 3 hours of my time was wasted because she literally repeated the same things that Dr. Shah told me. Shame on you Nottage, I hope you see this and I hope you have an awful day. read more

I am baffled by the negative comments. I, personally had the best experience here. I've been seen in both locations. I was always treated well. I have experienced increased wait time, but we now have covid to deal with. Both doctors, treated me with care, compassion and respect. I saw Dr. H. both father and son. Dr. Frank saved my vision. On a Saturday and Sunday morning, to boot. My insurance, from Riverview Health, was terrible and tried paying very little. Billing was very helpful and understanding, they helped me get my terrible insurance to pay a little more, before I settled the bill. I believe her name is Jacqueline, got me a next day appointment for some issues that I had a year later, in the south office. I can't say enough good things about this office. As for having our drivers sit in the car, it's being done everywhere. And it's for the pandemic that is going on. Sorry if Health takes precedence over your feelings. I took an elderly person there today, the appointment was at 2:00pm, upon arrival,I was greeted along with the patient, we waited in a dirty cramped waiting room, furniture needed to be cleaned in all waiting areas we were in The medical assistant took some photos and did testing, it was 7 minutes long. We then waited in another waiting room which was dirty along with the bathroom which was used twice in three hours we were there. In the final waiting room we sat in a dirty bed bug infested area, the bugs were crawling around on the seat, we got up an moved to another area. After waiting for two hours, I went up and asked how long the wait would be till the patient saw a doctor. There response was we are short handed and it might be some time. When we were ushered into the exam room, the carpet was filthy dirty and equipment was dirty also. The doctor saw the patient I was with for six minutes. No wonder, they don't spend more time, the medicare payout for today is minimal, so they have to see many patients, however there is no excuse for dirty restrooms, bedbugs on the chairs and the exam room filthy. I did not want to post pictures of the waiting room, due to other patients waiting and the nurse stayed with us when we went into the exam room so I could not take pictures of the exam room. The lab coat on the doctor needed washing also. read more

Upon hearing my 75-year old brother's horrendous experience at the Carmel office earlier this week, I knew I had to write a review for him. He has never used a computer and wouldn't even know how to post a review. He is legally blind and has been dealing with glaucoma since his late 20's and is now needing a specialist for his retina which is swelling. He was referred to Dr. Patel by his ophthalmologist in Fort Wayne earlier this Spring. After several attempts to schedule and find a ride to his appointment he finally arranged for a VA driver to take him to Indianapolis which is a 4-hour round trip this week. Upon arrival at Midwest Eye Institute, the person behind the counter handed him a stack of new patient forms to fill out. He told the man that he couldn't see to fill out the paperwork and he was told "just do your best." He is legally blind! My brother who is somewhat passive, obliged and spent the next 38 minutes trying to use his tiny magnifying glass to read and fill out the forms. When he was called back for his appointment he had only completed the first half page and as you would expect it was illegible. At this point, the staff said he would have to reschedule his appointment because he had not completed his paperwork. There were four women and a man working the front counter and no one offered him "respect, compassion or concern" which is what the website claims is their approach. An obviously blind man, with no one to help him was left alone to fail at an impossible task. A reasonable, compassionate person would have let him fill out the paperwork at a later date since his Dr. had already filled out referral forms. Or perhaps someone in the office could have helped him while he waited over half an hour for his appointment. This is not how he or anyone should have been treated. Reschedule? I think not. He says he will never return to this office. read more

One of the worst experiences of my life. Dr. Nottage scraped off the outermost surface of my cornea with a surgical instrument, compared the pain to a skinned knee, and prescribed only Tylenol and ice post op. The pain was excruciating. She refuses to give prescription pain meds because "there are no blood vessels in your cornea so they can't work." Assuming she went to medical school she knows that the cornea has 400 times more nerve endings than the skin on your knee, and that pain medications work in the brain's pain centers and have no action in any other body part. She finally came out with the real reason: the opioid crisis. As if pain meds for 2 days are going to cause addiction when a patient is in severe pain? Looks you right in the eye and lies to you, as do her assistants. They all talk like robots and are totally lacking in compassion. Dr. Mengele would love them. read more

understand the wait time. I work at an doctors office. My mother is very hard of hearing and extremely anxious. I assisted her the first visit. I watched another patient go in with his daughter. I stood up to walk in behind my mother and was stopped. She said that said she has to go alone. I explained that my mom couldn't hear because of the mask. She stated she didn't care they weren't letting anyone go back. Then she said sorry. Im so upset. There were things I needed to tell them that my mom was to nervous to remember. Dr. Gavin Roberts in the pediatric group is amazing. He doesn't ever seem rushed and takes time to answer all my questions, and he is WONDERFUL with children. My daughter has been seeing him since she was an infant (she's now 7). I also like that he takes a wait and see approach in regard to surgery for some intermittent eye crossing issues she has had. Instead, he's suggested we try patching and come back in 6 months to follow up. He also tells us when we really need to get her a new pair of glasses due to an Rx change, or when we can wait a few months (i.e., get them before school starts in the fall). Highly recommend him if you have a kiddo with vision needs! read more

First, the good: (1) Dr. Haider has been our daughter's eye doctor for several years and when you finally get in to see her, she is absolutely fantastic. She is smart, professional, and very good with kids and we think she did an exceptional job with our daughter's vision treatment over the years. I would recommend her and would continue to use her - if she were working for a different organization - one that was actually organized and patient-focused; and (2) the staff working in the eyeglass fitting area were always pleasant and good to work with. This is the only part that earns this place 2 stars. I'd give Dr. Haider 5 stars and Midwest Eye Institute negative 10 stars if possible. Math was never my strong suit so I ended up landing on 2 stars. Now, the bad: I've had glasses and contacts my whole life. As a result, I've gone to many eye doctor offices across different states in which I have lived over the course of several decades. I can honestly say that I've never waited for an appointment for more than 30 minutes to see an eye doctor, and that was the exception, not the rule. Midwest Eye Institute is the exception..... They either have way, way too many patients, or they simply have no idea how to manage them, so plan on waiting for your appointments for *hours* (that's right, hours - not minutes - hours), and the staff handling check-ins could literally not care any less and still have a pulse. We always try to schedule the first appointment in the morning when their office opens, because this issue has gotten worse over the years and it's the only way to have a chance (albeit slight) to get out of there within a few hours time, but it apparently doesn't matter anymore. We had an 8:45am appointment (originally 8:30, but see below for more on that), and we were still waiting to see the doctor at 10:10am. After about 45 minutes or so and no one having come to give us an update, I checked in again with the front desk staff to make sure we had not been forgotten (as patients who arrived and checked in after us had been seen), and was told we were "still on the list." Once we had been there nearly an hour and half with no one providing us with an update, and couldn't wait any longer (we had another appointment later that morning), I went up to the front staff to respectfully indicate our disappointment and to reschedule. No apologies from the staff. No explanations from the staff. Common decency and common courtesy should dictate at least some form of explanation or apology. We received neither. I guess my expectations are way, way too high (I ask rhetorically)? I mean, just tell me we were going to be next, or just give me a simple "sorry you waited so long." If I showed up an hour and half late for an eye appointment, I assume they would tell me to leave and charge me a missed appointment fee as a parting gift. Likewise, I'm a professional that has paying clients and if I made my clients wait in my office waiting room for nearly an hour and half for a scheduled appointment, I wouldn't have any clients left (in fact, I probably wouldn't be employed). [As an aside, we originally scheduled the appointment for 8:30am (which is when the office opens), but we received a random text message a few weeks before our appointment that Midwest had unilaterally elected to change the time of the appointment to 8:45am. OK, fine. 15 minutes. Not a big deal. We're flexible. But, then don't make us wait for nearly an hour and a half to never see the doctor.] I'm reminded of the old Seinfeld episode where the rental car company neglected to keep a car available for Jerry and Elaine. Jerry reminds the rental car clerk that literally anyone can just *take* a reservation (waving his arms in the air) - but it's the actual **holding** of the reservation that's really the most important part of the reservation. (If you haven't seen this, check it out on YouTube as it could be one of the best tv clips ever, but I digress.....) Come on Midwest Eye Institute - do better. If you schedule someone for an 8:45 appointment, at least try to honor that appointment - perhaps even within an hour or so. And if you just can't for some reason (i.e., an emergency with another patient) - OK - then mix in some effort to communicate that to the insurance checks ..... errrr..... I mean .... the patients in the waiting room. Dr. Haider deserves better and so do the people that want to see her who have jobs, lives, and clients of their own. As for us, we'll just plan on going elsewhere in the future - where hopefully the *holding* of the reservation actually matters. read more

Once again, I received a short, rude response from front desk. When asking if I could leave a message for billing(you cannot contact them directly- a real hassle) I was told " if it is brief". Totally rude & unnecessary response. That was after I was not so briefly put on hold. It is a shame that such amazing physicians continue to employ rude front office staff. Dr. Purvin is great. Really well educated, knowledgable and helpful. She is very detail oriented. I had an unusual case, and she did a great work up for me to go to Mayo Clinic. Her staff however is less than friendly. The concept for basic social skills is far beyond their grasp. So don't expect any social pleasantries, or any sympathy for that matter. read more
