If there's one thing I like to get right- it's chocolate. Mielke is located in Great Barrington, MA on Stockbridge Rd. Parking lot is available with chocolate parking signs. There are 'Entrance' and 'Exit' doors and once inside, you'll see a lot of prepackaged gummis, licorice, chocolate pops, etc. Further down you'll see chocolate turtle candies, some brownies I think, etc. that are neatly displayed in glass shelves. Everything looked fresh with trays heaped with their creations- but these 'Chocolate Truffles' are not my type. I bought 4 'Truffle' pieces to avoid leaving empty-handed. With one bite, you pick up more on the sugar and less on the key ingredient. These almost reminded me of the boxed pharmacy chocolates your job might get to leave at the front office so folks can pick on. These chocolates aren't horrible. It's just that Mielke might be for you....not for me. read more

Absolutely delightful mini candy land of confections. Brought the kids and let them pick out anything they wanted to get.... they chose wisely There was a little bit of everything : lollipops , chocolates , caramels and maple candies, and decadent mints and flavor filled concoctions. They had an entire display case of fudge too we chose penuche, chocolate, and peanut butter fudge. We left with joy and smiles on our faces. The staff is Super accommodating, friendly and pleasant. The new owners have renamed the store but it is pretty much the same wonderful place as it was when it was Catherine's. New paint and fresh new signs and a refresh of the inside but overall still a joy to visit with friends and kids. Their little eyeballs popped with excitement and amazement As they look around at all the wonderful candies and chocolates to choose from. Bought a chocolate mold pop during the Stockbridge Christmas event. It actually tasted like dollar store chocolate. No flavor. No depth. I hope it was because they were trying to make sure they had inventory and not the normal chocolate. Would not recommend. It's no Catherine's. read more

UPDATED REVIEW: the response from the owner was gracious and explained what the issue may have been. I have changed my rating to 4 stars based on their honesty and willingness to make things right. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Apparently "ice cream" (advertised on the sign out front) really means "soft serve in very small portions." My spouse was not pleased to discover a medium-sized cone meant about 3 ounces of product. Surely this is not what the business proprietors meant either. Lots of pretty pictures of candy, though. If you're not serious about offering ice cream, don't promote it. read more

Catherine's is great, and supporting a Massachusetts company makes me feel all warm and cozy inside. While Catherine's has a nice selection and seasonal goodies (turkeys, Santas, bunnies, etc) I turn to them when I need an old-fashioned gift, something that will make the recipient say "I LOVE THESE"..... like the fruit slices and fudge I sent my Aunt last month. The run-of-the-mill sugary fruit slices are in grocery stores around Passover, but these are real fruit slices in a variety of flavors, and my Aunt says they remind her of the ones she had when she was a kid. My only complaint is their website can be a problem (which they acknowledge), so you may just want to give up and call, although that can be annoying if you are in a hurry and/or needing to place an order at an odd hour. read more

My wife wanted to stop and visit a candy store on our little road trip to the Berkshires. Walking in, the place is very nice, clean, prices are clear (unlike the reviews for Robin's). I love sea salt caramels. These ones are tiny and are $14.95 for a "1/2 lbs" or $30 a pound...YIKES! We bought a few anyway, and they had a MINT aftertaste. I've made (Calico) fudge in the past. Mint flavoring is VERY STRONG! Not recommended to store mint and non mint items together. Otherwise, everything else (like the Caramels) will have a MINT taste. Not disgusting in this case, just odd. Not expected. I also got a Chocolate covered Salted Pretzel. However, it seems like it was more of a basic table salt then a pretzels salt. Was NOT complimentary! Too much salt on it! Nothing had a 'WOW' factor, other than 'WOW' that kinda sucked! Was kind of disappointing, not a great Chocolate quality. They really need to take some chocolatere lessons from Stewart's Chocolates in Holden Ma. read more

Special occasions in my family mean that someone is getting a Berkshire Mix from Catherine's. It would just be weird if that wasn't the case. I've yet to find a comparable chocolate shop here in the city and always insist on making a pit stop on the way to and/or from the Wassaic train station when I'm visiting home. The peppermint and wintergreen patties are my favorites but the fruit slices, gummies, jelly beans, etc. are also worth a taste. ...you can't go wrong with anything, really. read more

I had a great experience when I stumbled upon this place last year. I've been wanting to come back every since (mainly for the mango gummi bears). We finally made the 1 hour 15 min drive out to The Berkshires. First stop was Catherine's. There was a small variety of gummi flavors but unfortunately mango was not one of them. We decided on Strawberry, Peach, Red Raspberry, Grape and Orange. I asked the girl at the counter if there were anymore mango. She said they didn't have any out right now, at least not in a bag. Which led me to believe they were coming out but perhaps just not yet. They had only been open for a few hours so this was possible. So I asked if they would be out later, should I come back? We would be in the area for a bit so I had no problem coming back. Her response was packaging gummies was not on the list that she left for them. She just seemed over it. My thought is if they are there and just need to be bag, why not thrown them in a bag and make a bigger sell. Gummi Bear Review: Red Raspberry, Grape, Strawberry all great. The flavors were strong and gummies were soft and chewy. Orange and Peach on the other hand were harder. Peach still had a great flavor but the gummies were are fresh. Orange tasted like any other generic gummy. Flavor was not apparent. read more

We pass 2 other chocolate providers to buy our Holiday chocolates at Mielke. The quality is excellent and the variety is amazing! Besides the long glass cases filled with all those wonderful chocolates you can buy by the pound, there is also an entire second room with fun candies packaged and ready to go. Though mostly chocolate, there are also Swedish fish, all types of dummies, licorice and lots more. Great great place...highly recommended! read more

Walked in craving fudge. Girl behind the counter spent her time chatting on the phone. Asked if fudge was fresh. Was told, "Yes", and then watched her crack a piece of vanilla in half like it was a crouton. Instead of leaving, bought three different flavors, none particularly good. The best was actually the piece of Penuchi we got already cut and locked in a plastic package. Robin's Candy Shop on Main Street blows this place away. read more

Not up to Catherine's standards. Stopped in last week, we bought chocolates and fudge. Let me just say, I could taste no difference in the chocolates I selected (all dark covered-marzipan, orange peel, orange slice, apricots and ginger.) Still excellent and I savored every one. The fudge however was very sub par, in fact we had two separate boxes and threw more than half away. Each box contained different flavors yet all were crusty and dried out. Should never have been sold as it just wasn't fresh. I've been stopping here for close to 45 years, and this is the first time I've been disappointed. Sadly, this was also probably my last trip to MA, and so a fond lifetime memory ends on a sour note. read more

Have been stopping by this candy shop for 35 years. They always have the best New England treats. Love it.

The store was filled top to bottom with amazing looking chocolates and other sweets. They had chocolate cups of ice cream in a freezer that were inside a larger cup with sprinkles under the ice cream. I picked it up to look at it, but the cover was not tightly closed, and the larger cup and all the contents fell on the floor. I brought it to the counter to let the employee know what happened. Apparently, since I had tried to take it out of the freezer I had to buy it, even though it was not my fault that it fell. When I explained again to the employee what happened she said it was store policy, and I had to pay for it. I tried to explain again and told her that she should tape the cover on the other one so the same thing doesn't happen to the next person. She was very rude about the whole thing. Fortunately, the ice cream and chocolate cup that it came in were very good, but I can't comment on the sprinkles since I didn't get to try any. I gave 2 stars instead of 1 because the chocolate was good and it was a great idea to make a cup out of chocolate. read more

At $28/pound, I expect candy to be fresh. The dark chocolate covered toffee I bought last week for a gift was rancid and made my tongue numb for a few hours after I ate it. It was so old, the toffee part collapsed in my mouth and the nuts covering the chocolate were bad. It's called MIELKE'S now. Maybe their trying to escape their bad reviews... Plus the counter woman was totally rude and the scale was broken so I had to wait to charge my card even though I was the only customer in the store. This place is adorable, if not a bit dated. They've been in business since the 1920s!! Not in this location, however. The stars of this show are the truffles! Not too sweet or bitter, quite flavorful and melt in your mouth delicious. My favorite is the maple-walnut. Find a chocolate covered Twinkies here also. Fun and frivolous. This place is adorable, totally what a chocolate shop should be! But they have all their fudge pre-sliced, which made it so dry. We swung by craving fudge and got a couple- they were all decently flavored but SO dry. I worked at candy shops before, and we would always cut to order because otherwise it dries out... This shop is the perfect place to stop on the way home from skiing at Butternut for a treat. They went out of their way to find the perfect chocolate for my husband. They even went in the back and brought out candy that wasn't being displayed. While I was shopping they gave my kids each a free piece of fudge. They were kind and energetic. I had dark chocolate caramel with sea salt. It wasn't the best I've had but it was still really good as well as fresh. I have been a customer of Catherines for over 30 years, and in all that time I have only had one complaint, I discovered that I don't care for chocolate covered Oranges somewhere around 1984, but since they gave me the sample at no charge I saved the cost of purchase. In all those years I have only missed 2 Christmases and the relatives who usually recieve the truffles or cherries I generally send them expressed their dissapointment at not receiving them. I live on the other side of country now and miss being able to just pop in for a half pound of truffles or peanut butter smoothies whenever I have the craving, but the very first purchase I make every holiday season is from Catherines and unless LA has a shop I haven't heard of nor come across yet it will remain that way. !2/6/17. I just received this years order. They came beautifully wrapped including my Raspberry Jellies. I don't believe they are listed on the web site, but they never give me any problems adding them to the order. One of my absolute favorites. As someone already posted, the fudge is drier because it's pre sliced. It was OK but not great. The place is pricey but the chocolates are to die for. Great treat items too and holiday items. Some unique candies, the dipped cherries and oranges. YUM. This place is unique. Good. read more
