    Tuna tataki

This is our go to sushi place because it's so close to our house and we love these rolls: brad roll & mango tango roll. The service is always excellent and the salmon sashimi is like BUTTER. However, they lost a star because their staple appetizers: the salad and soup are AWFUL and their prices are just OK.

    Dynamite rolls.

Best sushi I've ever had! I always get the same rolls, the Brad rolls are my favourite, I also get the tempura shrimp roll, and dynamite roll. I also love the avocado roll, and the red rose roll. The Brad roll has tempura shrimp and avocado and it's wrapped with salmon. The tempura shrimp roll is very simple, it's just tempura shrimp, wrapped in avocado. I think everyone knows what's in a dynamite roll, but it's tempura shrimp, avocado, cucumber, spicy sauce, chopped scallops, tobiko, and mayo. Best dynamite rolls I've ever had though! And the avocado roll doesn't have any seafood, it's just rice with avocado wrapped in avocado. The red rose roll is bbq eel and avocado, wrapped in salmon or bluefin tuna. The staff is amazing, the place is always clean, and authentic, and it's fairly well priced for good quality sushi. I only come to this sushi place.

    Tofu- $7.50

Happy we made reservations on a weeknight for 7PM as when we arrived there was only one other table unoccupied. We were seated in the last booth at the back which was great for less traffic and it seemed less noise too. They had a few specials on the sushi but I didn't order any of them. We looked over the menus and it took a few minutes for our server to come take our drink and food order as it was busy. We decided to share the deep fried tofu for $7.50 and we received about 10-12 nice and crispy pieces of tofu. I ordered the sushi bento ($23) with chicken, rice, tempura, spring rolls, and sushi. My friend had the beef bento ($22) that came with chicken and beef but no sushi. The bentos come with miso soup, edamame, and salad which all came out shortly after we ordered. My friend also ordered sushi so by the time our meals arrived, we were getting full. There was a lot of tempura, about 6 pieces with 2 shrimp and 4 vegetables. I ate that and the spring rolls and took the rest home. The bento box alone would be enough to make me full. The service was very friendly and our server removed our empty plates promptly. I enjoyed our meal and didn't feel rushed to enjoy a relaxing dinner. Would return again and make a reservation again!

Salmon Tuna sashimi! Mikado always a winner! Great Japanese on the west end!

Great ambiance. Great food. We had an order of tempura, Alaskan roll, Rainbow roll and tuna salmon sashimi. It came out well timed. Continuous eating for a good hour! I really want to try the Dai Dai craft beer, didn't have a chance tonight. Finished off with a chocolate mousse. Great evening!

    Chirashi bowl for $24

I would like to give Mikado a better review, but... Honestly, their food is good and fresh, and service is good, but I find the food a bit of a rip-off. My husband had the Teriyaki beef, which he loved. It came done how he liked (medium) and stayed nice and hot on a sizzling platter. It came with miso soup and rice, and we feel he got a decent deal at $18. I had the Chirashi, and at $24, the most expensive Chirashi I've seen yet, I found it disappointing. Chirashi should be a bowl of rice covered with proteins. While the pickled ginger, seaweed shreds and lettuce made it look pretty, it also made for cheap toppings. It didn't have any roe, just finely chopped mushrooms. There was actually very little seafood for that high a price. I won't order it again. Not at that price.

My bento box A4, done to perfection!

We love to go for Mikado Mondays, our own made up lunch event at least once a week. There is ample parking and generally the wait is not massive if you go around 1145 or 1245. Between then it is not overly lengthy, but plan ahead to avoid the rush! I've really only had one dish at Mikado, bento box A4 with chicken, beef, salad, tempura, and rice. The price is more than reasonable. The taste and flavours are virtually always consistent at Mikado. You always get a hot towel to cleanse your hands before eating and their tea is quite nice too. Seating is either at a table, the bar, or a private room with sliding doors which is a hoot. The only gripes that I have are that once in a while, service can be quite prolonged and delayed, and the portions are inconsistent, in that sometimes you get three pieces of chicken and sometimes four. Sometimes the beef is plentiful, sometimes not so much. It would be nice to have certainty in what you are getting. Apart from this, Mikado is magnificent, and you need to go check it out.

Food as well as service top notch 10/10 Miso soup so much yummy....... Ness a must have.

The quality of the sashimi is just extra ordinary. Beside the friendly waitress, David the owner took the time to greet us and ensure the service is top notch. We feel like eating in Japan and David recommended few dishes that is really authentic. This is one of rare Japanese restaurants that truly present the real authentic Japanese foods. The Masukagami sake is smooth and aroma is superb.

My brother who lives in Vancouver likes to sneer, "Gross, prairie sushi!" whenever I talk about having sushi here, like he's so fancy now that he's a west coast transplant. And while I am not saying that sushi here in landlocked Edmonton is quite to the calibre that they are lucky enough to get on the coast, the sushi that you receive here at Mikado is really really good. I've been to all of the locations in the city and while I don't prefer one over the other, the one in closest proximity to my house usually wins out. West side is the best side! All of the locations look very similar inside, very clean with birch wood and light colours everywhere. My boyfriend and I took my out of town cousin here and he was really excited about it from the moment he checked out the menu online. The wine list is very small and so is the cocktail menu. There is lots of sake to choose from and if I wasn't still off sake from my fall trip to Japan I likely would have had some (I had a bad night with sake over there, it may be a while before I drink any again). Decent beer selection and high end spirits choices for well brand prices. Since we were lucky enough to have this meal expensed we decided to go all out. Appys (oysters and gyoza), 3 different kinds of rolls and the boat! I've never had sushi from a boat before and all three of us were really excited to have it. The presentation was stunning and it was super fun to eat off of. There was a mix of sashimi, nigri, several rolls and chop chop with roe, all of it absolutely delicious. We tried the Mango Tango roll which was totally awesome (bbq'd eel, mango, avoccado and red pepper), the Crispy Roll (it was a summer special one and I don't remember the ingredients, though I'm sure it had crab in it, and it was amazing) and the Godzilla Roll which was my least favourite of the rolls (it had the pickled ginger right in it and to me the ginger overpowered everything else and was all you could taste, but my boyfriend loved it so maybe you will too). They tried to tempt us with dessert but we were too stuffed. Service was good, the restaurant was about half full. I would expect it to be more full on a weekend or when it is colder out, people tend to gravitate towards patios in the summer. Oh, if you're here for lunch get a bento box. They are great here. Sushi for everyone!

The standout was the black cod with the miso marinade and the amazing selction of the Japonais Premium Select. A HUGE amount of rolls, sushi and sashimi. Definately worth the money if you are fine with the chef doing the choosing. Everything was super fresh. The only thing I think was just average was the tempura. It was no difference than the other places I have been to. Really worth making the reservation for, just keep in mind you may need to wait.

I ordres an assortment of them - red snapper, tuna and salmon for the sushi, California and Alberta rolls, and tempura shrimp cone. This time around I ordered the beef tataki, stir fried udon with chicken, miso soup and the 6 oz steak (for this one, a hot stone is brought to your table and you sear the steak on it; sauce are also available for this dish). And after our dinner, this place will be pretty difficult to beat. We came here for our anniversary dinner. My boyfriend put in a reservation earlier, and once we arrived we were seated pretty quickly. It was a Monday night but I was so surprised at how packed the place was. This was our first time here so the server explained how ordering on the slip works. Wait time wasn't terrible. And like I mentioned before, this place was so packed and full of people. All the servers that night were weaving through aisles, delivering food, and taking orders. They were all hustling. Food was delicious. We started off with a couple of rolls like California Rolls, Avocado, Tuna, Salmon, and Tamago. The sushi rolls were pretty small, but I didn't have a problem with it. Since it's AYCE, I knew that we'd have much more food coming. I was very impressed by the quality of fish. It tasted very fresh. Also we ordered the seared Beef Nigiri and that was delicious. We ended up ordering more of that later. For the next round, we ordered Edamame, Beef (? it was like a beef galbi cut but I forgot the name of it on the menu), Chicken Skewers, Green Onion Cake, and Tempura. For our Tempura veggies we chose pumpkin, yam, and eggplant. I loved the tempura. It was definitely a highlight of the night. The batter was very crispy, light, and all the tempura came out hot. It was wonderful. We ended up getting more after the first round of tempura because it was too good. The Chicken Skewers were phenomenal. My boyfriend and I were saying that if we had the Chicken Skewers with rice, that would just be enough. The flavor of the sauce was great: savory, slightly sweet, it was reminiscent of a teriyaki flavor for me. And lastly, we had the BC Roll, Alberta Roll, Crunchy Roll, Philadelphia Roll, the seared Beef Nigiri again, and a few other rolls. At this point of the dinner we barely had any steam left but somehow we managed. Every single we thing we ate was just amazing. I wasn't disappointed by anything we ordered actually it was just great. I will say the Crunchy Roll had this smokiness that scratched my brain in the best way possible and I was so impressed by that bite. This was such an unforgettable experience and the best place we've spent our anniversary haha. 10/10, take my money. To Sushi Toshi, I'll be thinking about you.

I've visited Dorinku's Tokyo counterpart on Whyte Ave many times (you can read my review here) but somehow the Osaka restaurant has eluded me. I absolutely love the idea of Dorinku's two restaurants; one Downtown and one in Old Strathcona, each catering to the cuisine of their respective cities in Japan. I was expecting to see some crossover dishes between their menus but was also hoping for some uniquely regional ones as well. Dorinku Osaka was named as a Don't Skip the Dishes Here restaurant in CBC Edmonton's Best Restaurants 2019 list and EDify Magazine called them the Best Japanese Restaurant 2023. I was excited to head Downtown on a Saturday evening to take a short trip to Osaka (flight not necessary). Parking is always trickier downtown but if you're lucky you'll be able to grab a street spot right out front. This restaurant feels larger and more spacious compared to its Tokyo sibling. The focal point is the massive bar in the center of the room, complete with a noki-gawara style roof reminiscent of Osaka Castle. The dining room is brighter at the front where natural light pours through the sakura branches and moodier toward the back where the izakaya vibe truly takes hold. I had heard that this location employs a robot server which I was looking forward to seeing in action but it never appeared. When I think of Osaka my mind goes directly to the iconic Dotonbori area and I almost wish that this restaurant embodied a bit more of that particular mayhem and wackiness. My group was seated right in the front which was lovely and the design of wooden slats with a circular opening in the window was particularly memorable. The menu encompasses much of what an izakaya should: drinks and snacks! But there is much more on offer as well; from sushi to bowls. Dorinku Osaka also stays open until at least 11pm on Friday and Saturday evenings to cater to the night life crowd and even offers a special late night menu (let's be real, everyone just wants those Shaka Shaka Fries). On my visit there was a features menu which included a feature cocktail called the Wabi-Sabi (Plantation rum, amaro Montenegro, Aperol, pineapple liqueur, lime, honey wasabi syrup, milk wash - $16.00). I had to try it! However, the Sakura cocktail from the Signature Seven menu would've been an easy second choice. I loved this beverage!! Complete with a single, perfectly-formed ice cube, this drink was fruity yet adult. The complex flavour bounced from sweet to tart plus there was also a hint of wasabi heat in there. I was really enamoured with this cocktail and the level of expertise involved in creating it. Our friendly server took our order and I certainly knew that we ordered way too much! It was difficult not to with so many enticing dishes to try! There are two specific dishes that come to mind when I think of food from Osaka; one of them being Takoyaki (6 pieces, katsu sauce, kewpie mayo, bonito flakes, aonori - $8.80) which I ordered immediately from the Hot Snack & Sharables part of the menu. The other dish is okonomiyaki which I was shocked not to find on the menu. Seems like a pretty short-sighted omission for an Osaka-themed restaurant. For me, the dancing bonito on top is key! These takoyaki were excellent! It's pretty easy to end up with really mushy takoyaki (including in Japan) and to me, the texture of these ones were just right. The outside was fried to perfection allowing for a really nice and toothsome crunch. I wonder if they achieved this by deep-frying instead of using a takoyaki-ki. The inside was soft but not too much so, concealing a piece of octopus inside. All of the delicious toppings really make the dish. It's very easy to keep popping these tasty little orbs into your mouth. Sushi was going to be a must. Dorinku Osaka specializes specifically in pressed sushi (oshizushi) which is prepared by using a wooden mold called an oshibako that firmly compresses the sushi into compact, geometric blocks. This creates a modern and stylized presentation that dazzles effortlessly. The Dorinku Sushi Set (Salmon Pressed Sushi, TNT Pressed Sushi, Scallop Pressed Sushi, Tuna Tataki - $58.80) is a great way to try a bunch of different types! (Unless you order the full Osaka Bridge which is massive and incredibly impressive!) Served on a "smaller bridge" atop a bed of banana leaves, the presentation alone was something special. Starting with the Salmon Pressed Sushi (wild sockeye, avocado, creamy mayo sauce, teriyaki sauce, kaiware). I found myself pleasantly surprised with this one. I'm usually not a huge fan of the aburi preparation, where the top of the pressed sushi is flame-seared. (Maybe I'm too much of a purist?) But I really liked it in this case. The rich, smoky flavour worked beautifully with the salmon and other saucy components. The most simple of the sushi and maybe the best. Next was the Scallop P
