Japanese Bistro is our favourite sushi place in the city. The pressed salmon roll is a must as is the Lobster Cream Udon. It's often busy so it's good to make a reservation. The presentations of the food is also phenomenal. We keep coming back again and again.

Opening almost a decade ago, Japonais Bistro is a bit of a pioneer. I give them credit for bringing modern, innovative, and higher-end Japanese food to Edmonton. Since their opening, many have followed. Including plenty of izakaya and ramen restaurants. What once used to be Westernized sushi shops (so many California rolls) and way too much teppenyaki has finally matured into wonderful restaurants that represent much more of an accurate depiction of real Japanese cuisine. Japonais Bistro played a large roll in this and have now opened two other restaurants under their umbrella. Voted #1 Best Sushi 2018 in VUE Weekly, I have loved watching this incredible cuisine grow in our city. Located in Oliver on Jasper Ave, it's a busy corner of the city filled with tons of restaurants and lots of activity. Japonais Bistro has a nicely-sized patio out front and entering the space you'll find a rather large room with long stretches of exposed brick and tons of grainy hardwood. (Take a close look at the floors - there are little flowers between the floor boards!) Comfortable U-shaped booths line the walls and the tables are quite spread out. The room is very clean and contemporary, which is fairly standard these days. We were seated outside on the patio and I appreciated the opportunity to enjoy a meal in the beautiful spring sunshine. Our server was very friendly and upbeat, taking the time to joke around with us. A sunny patio meal definitely calls for a cocktail and while there is plenty of hot sake to choose from and Sapporo on tap, I had to go with one of their signatures; the Sake Sangria (Cold sake, red wine, prosecco, lychee juice, pom syrup, mint, fruit - $13.00). Unfortunately, the server let me know that they were out of the red wine used to make the sangria but that they could make it with white wine instead. This was a bit disappointment because I greatly prefer red to white, but ordered the cocktail anyway. Sangria in the sun just makes sense! And honestly, I didn't miss the red wine at all. Refreshing, crisp and fruity, this turned out to be everything that I was hoping for. I actually think that the lychee juice might even pair better with a white wine as opposed to red. I loved the use of sake, which tied in with the whole meal experience perfectly. When Japonais Bistro first opened I was so impressed by all of their new ideas, rarely seen on menus in Edmonton at the time. Now that creative innovation is more widespread, Japonais Bistro has really focused their menu on their strongest dishes that truly shine. We came in hot on the appetizer section, finding it difficult not to order almost one of everything. I love that they serve wagyu stone grilled at your table and think that they do a great job of knowing their audience by offering several beautifully prepared beef dishes. However, it had to be the New Style Sashimi (Assorted sashimi seared with hot olive oil & yuzu soy sauce - $18.50) for me. This dish takes perfectly sliced slabs of raw fish (I believe that some of them were bluefin) and elevates them in a way that I'd never considered before. I loved each buttery and delectable piece and the perfect level of seasoning created a more exciting flavour profile. Packed with umami, this plate reminded me of going to a traditional sushi bar in Japan where the chef carefully paints the soy sauce onto the sushi for you before serving. The idea of this dish is to take classic sashimi and twist it around into something more modern and they have absolutely succeeded in doing so. Next, I couldn't let the Black Cod (Black cod marinated in miso, with sliced fresh beets - $17.50) escape. Absolutely one of my favourite Japanese dishes. If you're familiar with the black cod with miso of Nobu fame, this dish certainly captures some of that same magic. The black cod was impossibly unctuous and tender and the crispy skin was grilled to perfection, adding wonderful texture. I really loved the addition of thinly-sliced beets which brought a lovely earthy component. Each bite of this fish melted away in my mouth and I wished that I could've ordered a second one. Yes, we're still doing appetizers. There is a specific tempura section of the menu and I'd heard good things about the Spicy Mango Prawn (Prawn tempura coated in garlic aioli, with crispy wonton & spicy mayo tare - $16.00) which sounded delicious. There's something about prawn tempura cooked to a perfectly crispy and golden consistency but then also bathed in a creamy sauce that just feels tropical to me. There's a bit of heat in this dish but it's just right. Tons of texture, I found this plate to be a lot of fun and packed with big flavours. A total crowd pleaser. The menu does have a proper entree section and I was thisclose to ordering the lobster cream udon, which I'm sure would've been magical. They also offer an array of amazing-sounding dinner bento boxes, which is so helpful if you go to dine with people who might not have similar tastes as yoursel

TL;DR: the freshest sushi in Edmonton (in my opinion). We came here for dinner without a reservation but luckily, they were able to fit us in. It was quite busy but our server was very friendly. We ordered some sushi, the soft shell crab salad, shrimp tempura, miso soup, and the lobster cream udon. It came to about $180 in total. The pressed salmon sushi is absolutely delicious. The cheese on top wasn't too strong which allowed the taste of the salmon to come through. The raw fish and sashimi here is so incredibly fresh, especially for Edmonton standards. The quality was good and everything was made with care. The lobster cream udon was pretty good. The lobster flavour stood out and the broth was very hearty. The shrimp tempura was probably the best tempura I've had in Edmonton. It was crispy, it wasn't bland, and the dipping sauce it came with complimented it perfectly. The soft shell crab salad is definitely a favourite for me. The crab was fried to perfection and the dressing wasn't too overwhelming. However, the miso soup was quite mediocre. It tastes the same as the ones you can get from a "fast food" sushi joint. It was a bit too salty for me. Overall, I love Japonais Bistro. It's the perfect destination for a date, a gathering, or even a business lunch. You can tell the quality of the food is excellent and the service is very prompt. I will definitely be returning.

Surprisingly fresh fish in a landlocked province! We had the sushi platter, the beef short ribs bento, fried chicken, and a fun soju cocktail. Everything was delicious and the quality of food was excellent. Definitely one of my favorite Japanese places in Edmonton.

Wow the level of fresh sushi they offer is unreal. I had the hot stone stake to start and it was delicious. Really neat you can cook your own steak on a hot stone. The sauces they offered for this was fab! I had the dynamite roll. The tempura shrimp inside was fresh and crispy and the home made sauces on top were very flavourful. I also ordered the tempura soft shell crab salad. I had never had this so I was super skeptical but it was strangely yummy I was surprised. But soooo good! I will most def be back

We went in around noon with my little brother, service was a little slow and it wasn't really busy yet. We ordered an appetizer (TNT crab & avocado roll topped with shrimp tempura & sweet spicy mayo, for $16.00) to share. It was the perfect amount. All of the flavours popped. The crab was really fresh. I would definitely recommend this dish. We then ordered a build your own bento box each, we both tried the chicken karage, which was super dry, I've defiantly had better. the rest of the box was pretty basic. After we ordered our meal the server let us know that during lunch you also receive a salad to share and a miso soup each.. There was a lot if she had explained that when she got our drink orders we may have not ordered everything. The server wasn't very good at coming by to check on us or fill our water, we had to ask her multiple times. This was my first time coming for lunch and I don't think I would return. I have been there for dinner which was a much better experience.

    Dessert

Food was way better than I expected, I want to say excellent... the server was cool kind and helpful. the ambiance indoors was 6/10, Went during the day time like lunch hours.

Wow I'm soy happy finally found a delicious sushi place in Edmonton! The sushi was fresh and the rice wasn't bland and proportionate (hate it went restaurants pack the sushi full of rice). We ordered: Toro (Tuna belly) nigiri Hotate (scallop) nigiri Chopped scallop nigiri Unagi (eel) nigiri Pressed salmon sushi Makimono Eel bibimbop Service was quick and the quality is definitely there! High recommend if you shrimply want to satisfy your sushi cravings!

It was the first location before they opened up other locations...and it is by far my favourite. I go here for the classic dishes that never fail. Tempura, beef tataki, age dashi tofu, sashimi and rolls galore. Everything is always top notch quality and consistently delicious. I have never had a bad tasting meal. I ordres an assortment of them - red snapper, tuna and salmon for the sushi, California and Alberta rolls, and tempura shrimp cone. I had green tea to drink and had green tea ice cream for desert. Service was very good and rapid, and very attentive and polite. And after our dinner, this place will be pretty difficult to beat. We came here for our anniversary dinner. My boyfriend put in a reservation earlier, and once we arrived we were seated pretty quickly. It was a Monday night but I was so surprised at how packed the place was. This was our first time here so the server explained how ordering on the slip works. Wait time wasn't terrible. And like I mentioned before, this place was so packed and full of people. All the servers that night were weaving through aisles, delivering food, and taking orders. They were all hustling. Food was delicious. We started off with a couple of rolls like California Rolls, Avocado, Tuna, Salmon, and Tamago. The sushi rolls were pretty small, but I didn't have a problem with it. Since it's AYCE, I knew that we'd have much more food coming. I was very impressed by the quality of fish. It tasted very fresh. Also we ordered the seared Beef Nigiri and that was delicious. We ended up ordering more of that later. For the next round, we ordered Edamame, Beef (? it was like a beef galbi cut but I forgot the name of it on the menu), Chicken Skewers, Green Onion Cake, and Tempura. For our Tempura veggies we chose pumpkin, yam, and eggplant. I loved the tempura. It was definitely a highlight of the night. The batter was very crispy, light, and all the tempura came out hot. It was wonderful. We ended up getting more after the first round of tempura because it was too good. The Chicken Skewers were phenomenal. My boyfriend and I were saying that if we had the Chicken Skewers with rice, that would just be enough. The flavor of the sauce was great: savory, slightly sweet, it was reminiscent of a teriyaki flavor for me. And lastly, we had the BC Roll, Alberta Roll, Crunchy Roll, Philadelphia Roll, the seared Beef Nigiri again, and a few other rolls. At this point of the dinner we barely had any steam left but somehow we managed. Every single we thing we ate was just amazing. I wasn't disappointed by anything we ordered actually it was just great. I will say the Crunchy Roll had this smokiness that scratched my brain in the best way possible and I was so impressed by that bite. This was such an unforgettable experience and the best place we've spent our anniversary haha. 10/10, take my money. To Sushi Toshi, I'll be thinking about you.

So this review is a bit late but thought I should still write it as my Dad (who only ever really…read moreenjoys eating steak and potatoes or sometimes a pizza) thought this was a good enough restaurant to return to. So what made it that great that my dad would give it such a high review? First, if you've never seen an advertisement for this place, prepare yourself for ongoing talking and some well rehearsed comedy from the chefs. There literally is a live cooking show being done with your meals right in front of you. This combination of humour and meal prep was a big hit for my family (the 5 of us were constantly commenting on how things were being cooked, what was new to us and encouraging the ongoing trials of the fork toss plus the salt and pepper tossing trick by the chef). Second, it might be a Japanese place but they have steak! You may have guessed with my intro but that was an important decision factor in choosing a restaurant. We wanted a different place for the early Christmas family gathering but something everyone could enjoy. Third, they're very diligent about respecting allergies. My sister-in-law gets very ill with her allergies. So it's nice not having to worry. They set her food specifically on one area of the grill and no other food was ever placed there. Hers was never combined with the rest of ours either. They also had a different soup for her to enjoy and did a vinaigrette on her salad instead of the house dressing. The food itself is a decent price for a fine dining experience and what you get with the dinner. There's soup, salad, grilled shrimp, grilled veggies and whatever you choose as your main. All with great flavour and you get two different dipping sauces - one being better for meat and other with vegetables. Obviously if you select the options of more seafood to accompany the main piece of the meal, the price is more expensive. We all kept it pretty simple. Two with shrimp dinners, two with New York steaks and one with teriyaki beef. We were all quite happy with our portions and if you feel you need extra rice, they will bring more out. If you have saved a bit of room, there's lots of dessert options too but that comes with an additional price. I really was quite happy with that large selection of mocktails to try but for those that want it, there's a large selection of mixed alcoholic drinks, wine, beer, etc. The place is accessible from the outside doors to the grill tables and even though my brother struggles to see in dim lighting, there's enough random lighting that we found a well lit spot at the table for him. I liked that I didn't have to watch for random levels or steps. There are a few booths throughout the restaurant for those that maybe want a more secluded meal but there's no grills for those spots. So after such a glowing review, why am I only giving it 4 stars? Well as I had booked ahead of time and specifically gave a number of 5 people for the reservation, it would have been nice to know we would not have anything started to be cooked, nor our meal order taken until they fill the rest of the table around the grill. If I had that information, I could have easily invited a couple of friends to join. However as this came to us as surprise, it meant even though we didn't know who was joining us, we were forced to awkwardly wait over 15 min to have them arrive and then start giving our order when they were ready. At least some of the drinks had made it out by then but the place was starting to fill up so the noise level was increasing. Luckily for us my mom randomly know the couple that was sat at our grill table but there were parts of the dinner you could tell they would have enjoyed having their own time as a couple (as I'm quite sure they weren't informed they'd be part of a bigger table being that they were surprised that my mom thanked them for arriving on time so we can now order when they are ready). It would have also been a different experience for my family too without the combined table situation. I had to remind the chef who's steak was being prepared due to the over eager guy wanting a well done steak the same time as a medium rare... Things eventually got served to everyone but only because I spoke up, I was able to get near to what I had requested (glad that my dad at least got his medium rare) even though everyone had reconfirmed orders when the chef was placing the meat on the grill. Lastly, the noise in the restaurant was so high at the end of our meal that not only did my dad stop trying to have a conversation but so did the rest of us. So instead of savouring dessert, I ate it quickly as all I wanted was to pay the bill fast and just leave the noise. I've gone once before on a week night back in April and it was more manageable for noise level. This being due to not all grills were full nor was the restaurant as full.

I didn't even know Sherwood Park has a Japanese Village and I hadn't been to one in about 15 years. We had 14 in our group but this wasn't an issue as we were all able to all sit around two grills with two grill cooks. Our server did a great job of taking our drink orders, filling up our water glasses and making sure we were happy. I personally started with a pint of their house beer and the Tuna Sashimi. Both were tasty. For my main course I had Teppan - Yaki Dinner (Teriyaki Chicken) It came with soup, salad and green tea. Our grill cook was a nice young man who brought a smile to our face and kept us chuckling. For the value, I was happy with my meal, the price I payed and the fun interacting with our cook. I would definitely go back with a group of friends.

The fish was very fresh as was the rice. Each roll was a good size and packed with flavour. The price was pretty on par with all sushi places.
