This is one of my favourite places to have Japanese food. (I can't just pick one, it would be like picking your favourite child.) Atmosphere is relaxed and minimalistic with a great chill vibe. Service is okay but I would say that all the times I have been there, the staff have not been super welcome or friendly. And this day was super busy, a Friday night and I don't think they had enough staff for the tables. Our dishes came by slowly which was fine because we were visiting with friends but don't expect to fly in and out. This is the one thing they can improve on. Luckily the food makes up for it. We ordered a bunch of things to share. The seasonal vegetable tempura Beef Tataki served with grated daikon, seaweed, sliced onion, ponzu dressing Black Cod with a miso marinade Japonais Premium Select -assorted chef's choice of maki rolls, sushi & sashimi We also sampled sake, beer, and Japanese whiskey Everything we had was delicous. The standout was the black cod with the miso marinade and the amazing selction of the Japonais Premium Select. A HUGE amount of rolls, sushi and sashimi. Definately worth the money if you are fine with the chef doing the choosing. Everything was super fresh. The only thing I think was just average was the tempura. Japonais is one of my favourite top 5 Sushi restaurants in Edmonton. As a celiac it's important to be able to order safe food from an establishment that understands what is needed. They have created a Gluten Friendly menu and they have always been helpful at serving me when I have questions. I order directly by calling... it's just great to have a person on the other end who is helpful at placing my order. They know who I am, it could be weird but I like the VIP treatment when I have such specific dietary requirements. I have not dined in during the pandemic, preferring take-out but the quality of the food has been just as good as previously when we ate in. I recognize some of the staff are still there, and that is a good thing. Gluten free soy sauce-you bet! Large pieces of sashimi? Definitely. Special request to not hate tako? (Can't after hearing Alton Brown recount an experience at an aquarium), order a side of Ika and they substitute Ika (squid) instead. (My favourite!) As for decor, they have indeed implemented plexiglass barriers between booths, the tables are not divided. Unfortunately accessibility isn't ideal for wheelchair users. The double doors I don't recall any power buttons. There is a step up to the dining area and a step up to get to the patio. I haven't used the facilities here so can't say if they are accessible. Parking, I don't even try the little lot out front any more. I park on the street by default. Looking forward to summer patio season to dine outside! read more

My daughter selected this restaurant to celebrate her 18th birthday. While I typically do not eat fish or seafood and therefore don't typically visit sushi restaurants, my daughter and her friend both commented on how fresh and delicious the sushi was. My husband enjoyed his bento box, and I was very pleased with the chicken teriyaki. The prices were very reasonable. The entree meals both included soup and we also received a tray of appetizers for the table, which added great value. Service was exceptional--our server was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, which made the dining experience even more enjoyable. For the birthday celebration, my daughter received a complimentary ice cream dessert that was generously sized and beautifully presented. As a thoughtful touch, the server also took a Polaroid photo of our group, which we were told is offered for all special occasions. Opening almost a decade ago, Japonais Bistro is a bit of a pioneer. I give them credit for bringing modern, innovative, and higher-end Japanese food to Edmonton. Since their opening, many have followed. Including plenty of izakaya and ramen restaurants. What once used to be Westernized sushi shops (so many California rolls) and way too much teppenyaki has finally matured into wonderful restaurants that represent much more of an accurate depiction of real Japanese cuisine. Japonais Bistro played a large roll in this and have now opened two other restaurants under their umbrella. Voted #1 Best Sushi 2018 in VUE Weekly, I have loved watching this incredible cuisine grow in our city. Located in Oliver on Jasper Ave, it's a busy corner of the city filled with tons of restaurants and lots of activity. Japonais Bistro has a nicely-sized patio out front and entering the space you'll find a rather large room with long stretches of exposed brick and tons of grainy hardwood. (Take a close look at the floors - there are little flowers between the floor boards!) Comfortable U-shaped booths line the walls and the tables are quite spread out. The room is very clean and contemporary, which is fairly standard these days. We were seated outside on the patio and I appreciated the opportunity to enjoy a meal in the beautiful spring sunshine. Our server was very friendly and upbeat, taking the time to joke around with us. A sunny patio meal definitely calls for a cocktail and while there is plenty of hot sake to choose from and Sapporo on tap, I had to go with one of their signatures; the Sake Sangria (Cold sake, red wine, prosecco, lychee juice, pom syrup, mint, fruit - $13.00). Unfortunately, the server let me know that they were out of the red wine used to make the sangria but that they could make it with white wine instead. This was a bit disappointment because I greatly prefer red to white, but ordered the cocktail anyway. Sangria in the sun just makes sense! And honestly, I didn't miss the red wine at all. Refreshing, crisp and fruity, this turned out to be everything that I was hoping for. I actually think that the lychee juice might even pair better with a white wine as opposed to red. I loved the use of sake, which tied in with the whole meal experience perfectly. When Japonais Bistro first opened I was so impressed by all of their new ideas, rarely seen on menus in Edmonton at the time. Now that creative innovation is more widespread, Japonais Bistro has really focused their menu on their strongest dishes that truly shine. We came in hot on the appetizer section, finding it difficult not to order almost one of everything. I love that they serve wagyu stone grilled at your table and think that they do a great job of knowing their audience by offering several beautifully prepared beef dishes. However, it had to be the New Style Sashimi (Assorted sashimi seared with hot olive oil & yuzu soy sauce - $18.50) for me. This dish takes perfectly sliced slabs of raw fish (I believe that some of them were bluefin) and elevates them in a way that I'd never considered before. I loved each buttery and delectable piece and the perfect level of seasoning created a more exciting flavour profile. Packed with umami, this plate reminded me of going to a traditional sushi bar in Japan where the chef carefully paints the soy sauce onto the sushi for you before serving. The idea of this dish is to take classic sashimi and twist it around into something more modern and they have absolutely succeeded in doing so. Next, I couldn't let the Black Cod (Black cod marinated in miso, with sliced fresh beets - $17.50) escape. Absolutely one of my favourite Japanese dishes. If you're familiar with the black cod with miso of Nobu fame, this dish certainly captures some of that same magic. The black cod was impossibly unctuous and tender and the crispy skin was grilled to perfection, adding wonderful texture. I really loved the addition of thinly-sliced beets which brought a lovely earthy component. Each bite of this fish melted away in my mouth and I wished that I could've ordered a second one. Yes, we're still doing appetizers. There is a specific tempura section of the menu and I'd heard good things about the Spicy Mango Prawn (Prawn tempura coated in garlic aioli, with crispy wonton & spicy mayo tare - $16.00) which sounded delicious. There's something about prawn tempura cooked to a perfectly crispy and golden consistency but then also bathed in a creamy sauce that just feels tropical to me. There's a bit of heat in this dish but it's just right. Tons of texture, I found this plate to be a lot of fun and packed with big flavours. A total crowd pleaser. The menu does have a proper entree section and I was thisclose to ordering the lobster cream udon, which I'm sure would've been magical. TL;DR: the freshest sushi in Edmonton (in my opinion). We came here for dinner without a reservation but luckily, they were able to fit us in. It was quite busy but our server was very friendly. We ordered some sushi, the soft shell crab salad, shrimp tempura, miso soup, and the lobster cream udon. It came to about $180 in total. The pressed salmon sushi is absolutely delicious. The cheese on top wasn't too strong which allowed the taste of the salmon to come through. The raw fish and sashimi here is so incredibly fresh, especially for Edmonton standards. The quality was good and everything was made with care. The lobster cream udon was pretty good. The lobster flavour stood out and the broth was very hearty. The shrimp tempura was probably the best tempura I've had in Edmonton. It was crispy, it wasn't bland, and the dipping sauce it came with complimented it perfectly. The soft shell crab salad is definitely a favourite for me. The crab was fried to perfection and the dressing wasn't too overwhelming. However, the miso soup was quite mediocre. It tastes the same as the ones you can get from a "fast food" sushi joint. It was a bit too salty for me. Overall, I love Japonais Bistro. It's the perfect destination for a date, a gathering, or even a business lunch. You can tell the quality of the food is excellent and the service is very prompt. Not inexpensive, but completely worth it! From the garlic & anchovy edamame to the bento box to any of the a la carte sushi, there isn't a miss on the menu! Service is excellent. Wow the level of fresh sushi they offer is unreal. I had the hot stone stake to start and it was delicious. Really neat you can cook your own steak on a hot stone. We went in around noon with my little brother, service was a little slow and it wasn't really busy yet. We ordered an appetizer (TNT crab & avocado roll topped with shrimp tempura & sweet spicy mayo, for $16.00) to share. It was the perfect amount. All of the flavours popped. The crab was really fresh. I would definitely recommend this dish. We then ordered a build your own bento box each, we both tried the chicken karage, which was super dry, I've defiantly had better. the rest of the box was pretty basic. After we ordered our meal the server let us know that during lunch you also receive a salad to share and a miso soup each.. There was a lot if she had explained that when she got our drink orders we may have not ordered everything. The server wasn't very good at coming by to check on us or fill our water, we had to ask her multiple times. This was my first time coming for lunch and I don't think I would return. Can you say LUNCH omakase??? Second time that I've been to Japonais Bistro and I have to say, it is definitely growing on me. Really down to earth restaurant with delicious food (although be prepared to wait). It's all about quality over quantity, err'day. Anyways, we went for lunch on a Tuesday and all three of us decided to get the lunch omakase ($20/person). So instead my usual ramblings and excess overwriting, I'll let the pictures do the talking (everything was top notch). As you can see, there was a variety of items to devour : - Miso soup to start - not too salty. Perfect way to start our meal off on a cold September day. - Rice and seaweed salad - I could eat this seaweed salad all day - Chicken karage - crunchy, perfectly fried and tender/moist in the inside - Salmon and tuna sashimi - nice edible sizes. Tasted very fresh. - Oysters - not sure exactly what kind they were but they were slightly on the sweeter side. - Salmon collar - cooked perfectly and very tender - Tuna tataki - came with with roasted garlic pieces and red onions - Seafood ceviche - pieces of octopus, shrimp and fish. Couple of chips to eat the ceviche with. Om nom nom. Japonais Bistro is a solid, solid spot just west off the downtown core. Still the best sushi spot in Edmonton, imo. It's been rough not being able to dine in (well, we can but we're still playing it safe). But even ordering for take out, we're amazed by the fact that their quality is still super consistent. Fish is always fresh, flavour of the sushi rice is on point...no hokey rolls that are drenched in strong sauces to cover up inferior sushi chef skills. Came for a birthday dinner October 2020. Lots of partisions up for covid so it feels rather private. The sushi was tasty and fresh! The presentation beautiful and seems to be a little different each time! Our food was prepared quickly and our server efficient although not very personable/ she was very to the point and gone. The only down side was the building was really cold. Parking can also be tricky but we arrived just after 6 so there was some free street parking close by! We all had to keep our coats on for our entire visit. But definatly a delicious experience and we will be back! read more

Lame, very lame to refuse service to a client when I showed up 25 minutes before they closed. I even asked if I can do takeout but was still turned away. Keep in mind I had taken the bus to get there specifically since it seemed like a good spot that got the best reviews. So happy I finally got to try this place! I have heard good things from others so it was definitely on my list of places to try. We were still kind of hungry after Taste of Edmonton so we decided to mosey over here for some sushi. They took us right away even though it was surprisingly busy which was nice of them. We ordered the pressed salmon roll and the avocado roll. Both rolls were great and came out so quickly we were actually kind of confused. But also very happy because we came here to EAT. We just ordered a jug of Blanche de Chambly with our dinner. Our server encouraged us to get this jug so we could live our best Sunday life. Twist my rubber arm I guess... I don't need a lot of encouragement. Its a nice option for a hot summer day. Overall I would be back here again - the selling point for me is the quickness of being seated and fed all within about 40 minutes. That made me a happy happy girl. read more

My 2 best friends and I went in June 2022. One of those 2 had a birthday so it seemed prudent (given our liking of Japanese food) to take him there. Had : Hot Stone Wagyu. Pricey? Yes Worth it? Totally! Melt In Your Mouth!! Tako (Octopus) Nigiri. Honestly? Just SLIGHTLY tough. Order it again? Yes! Godzilla Makimono New to us but WOW! That was a stunner. Flavor up and down the block. Have again? In a heartbeat. I'm slightly embarrassed to say I can't remember the names of the other 4 dishes. But I will say there was not one (very slight exception of the Tako) that we were disappointed in. Highly recommend. :-) As an aside...can't wait to give their Omakase a try. YUM! read more

We had a nigiri Omakase with Shigeo-san making our sushi all evening. 30 pieces with a nice selection of fish from Japan. The cuts were excellent and world class in quality. Fresh ground wasabi and home made soy and marinades were great. The home made smoke marinade on a king salmon nigiri was one of the best I have ever tasted! The selection and order of the pieces was delightful and educational :) I am so happy to have found a true Omakase experience here in Edmonton. Just make sure if you love sushi to ask for the nigiri omakase. I also tried their bistro kaiseki Omakase which had had a mixture of cooked courses and sashimi and I liked this better. Kaiseki will run you about $125 plus tax and tip. Nigiri Omakase for 30 pieces ran about $250 plus tax and tip. no alcohol included. as with all Omakase you can always get less pieces. :) read more

I stumbled upon their recent menu and am glad that they've decided to bring back the old favourites. I decided to order after 2 years. It still tasted just as great as I remember. It sucks that they price increased their items a good $3-5 but I doubt that will ever change unless it's to up it again. When you go in, it feels like a really high end place. The food, atmosphere all screams rich. You get bill, and it's not that bad. It costs as much as any other Japanese restaurant, except for the all day Bento..the all day Bento is huge and a great deal. Everything I've tasted, is amazing. I have heard a lot about this place over the years but I guess I just never got around to trying it till the other night. Japonais Bistro is decorated in a cute modern kind way. There's a raised platform area, bench seating, booths and counter space. We were seated and our order taken quickly. We ordered 4 different rolls and 2 pieces of sushi to split amongst 2 people - 2 unagi sushi, salmon press, TNT, California roll and Mango Fry. Food came as it ready so it almost felt like we having a multi-course meal which was kind of nice. It gave us the opportunity to really enjoy each roll individually opposed to just eating all the sushi we could. All the rolls were good but I think our consensus was that we liked the salmon press and TNT the best. $$$ wise, japonais bistro is fairly on par with places like Mikado. Our meal came to around $60 which I felt was close to the same in price. It's definitely not the cheapest sushi in Edmonton but I felt for the quality and atmosphere, it was fair. I would absolute go back to Japonais Bistro and will likely start using it as one of my go to sushi places in the city. read more
