My wife's dad had been going there for many years and they have always been really nice to him. He always gets the bento box and loves it. I took a friend there on Jan 2 and he loved it too. Authentic Japanese food. My go to for the best Japanese food in town. Large menu has everything you want from classic Japanese dishes with some modern fusion dishes as well. Best beef tataki I've had anywhere in the world thus far. I can't believe I haven't reviewed my favourite asian restaurant. I have been going here for more than 20 years, from when it was a mom and pop business run by a family...to being renovated and modernized by the kids of the original owners. It was the first location before they opened up other locations...and it is by far my favourite. I go here for the classic dishes that never fail. Tempura, beef tataki, age dashi tofu, sashimi and rolls galore. Everything is always top notch quality and consistently delicious. I have never had a bad tasting meal. The place is busy and it reflects that. Sometimes you need reservations on peak hours during dinner rush or weekends. But I never really have an issue getting a table if I don't. Get the beef tataki here. It's the best dish I've had and for me this is my classic must order when I come here. Sometimes I order 2 of them bc it's so good and I can't share it with someone else! The rolls always have a good ratio of rice and fish, with no yucky fillers like tempura crumbs, fruits and are never drenched in sauce. Once again a very soild meal here. This time my friend and I tried some fusion tacos and then some rolls. The rolls stood out over the tacos. However, everything here was tasty and I wouldn't hesitate of coming here again. The only thing that I wouldn't order again is the calamari. It was pretty bland and dry. Stick to the rolls and you will be good. The seafood is fresh. It is presented wonderfully. Dragon rolls were our favourite but honestly all the rolls we ordered were reall well executed. Service I can't say was friendly but adequate. They could probably improve on this. The atmosphere was nice and reminded me of Japan with the dark lighting , dark wood, and minimal decor. It is that way so you can enjoy your food. Price point it is probably more expensive then the typical sushi place, but worth it. Yokozuna is one of the better Japanese restaurants on the south side of Edmonton. The restaurant has a fairly modern set up and the Tatami room is quite nice. Service has been good as the server checked in on us a few times (which is quite nice as some servers forget that they have a table in a Tatami room). In terms of food, I've tried at least half of their menu, including Chirashi, Ohzeki Sashimi Set, Yokozuna Skewers Set, Assorted Tempura, and several rolls (Yokozuna Aburi, Black Dragon, and 1 to 2 other ones). Their sashimi was quite fresh and the Ohzeki is definitely a value item for a group. The Black Dragon roll is also worth getting. All other items are decent. The price here is a bit on the expensive side. Overall, I'd rate them 8.3/10 read more

Yokozuna is one of my favourite sushi restaurant in the city! The exterior of the restaurant looks a little off putting but the inside of the restaurant is modern and comfortable. Food is fresh, flavourful and delicious! The sushi rolls are packed with fish which is nice! We got the tuna tacos which had a little bit to much lemon seasoning in the guacamole making it a bit sour. My favourite roll is the black dragon roll! It has eel, shrimp tempura, avocado, with spicy mayo. It is BOMB! If you are going to try something here you should def try the black dragon roll. Sashimi is fresh, served on a bed of ice. One of the things I miss most about not living in Edmonton anymore is Yokozuna. We were regular customers for almost 20 years; by that, I mean dining there at least one night a week (plus intermittent lunches). So when I returned last night with a guest from Toronto, I was not sure what to expect: things change, right? And not always for the better. I am overjoyed to say that Yokozuna has not only maintained its excellent quality of food and its attentive service, but they have expanded their menu and even offer some inventive new dishes. We were impressed with taste and freshness of everything we ordered: Tat's tuna tacos (blackened tuna, guacamole, and spicy aioli; 4 for $15), Yokozuna garlic tuna (albacore tuna slices on a bed of fresh spinach, shaved onions, garlic ponzu sauce, crispy garlic chips; $20.50), very generous slices of sashimi (tuna, salmon 3/$8; also available 6/$15 and 12/$30), sashimi (unagi 2/$7, masago 2/$4.75), and a half order of tempura yams (huge slices must have been at least 4 x 3 inches each! $10). The knowledgeable waiter helped us choose saki from a lengthy list, and of course the genmaicha tea (aka popcorn tea) was replenished throughout the evening. It was a superb dinner; owner-chef Alan deserves Edmonton's equivalent of a Michelin star, were there such a thing. Sadly, I am now ruined for ordering Japanese food anywhere else. Don't let the outside fool you. The interior has a beautiful, dark look with booths for quiet, private dining. The food was simple and well plated, soup and salad included. My wife thought the soup tasted like hot dogs but the salad was liked by all. We ordered the sushi and sashimi combinations as well as the tempura side all off the lunch menu. Unfortunately the last three times I went there, there wasn't any available table and the wait time was 30-45 minutes. Finally got to try this place. A lot of my friends say this is the "best in town". It's definitely up there. First the decor, it's a beautiful restaurant. Definitely takes you to Japan, and the service was really good. Now onto the food, I was quite impressed, we had a nice mix of appetizers rolls and sashimi. The Beef Tataki was done thin and very nice. The sashimi was the star here. Tuna and toro. Huge slices, so the portions were very nice. I usually don't get rolls but we did the dragon eye, which is a deep fried hot roll, negitoro and dynomite. They were all well done and the presentation was nice. It's a bit pricy here, but definitely in the high end in this city. Would place it just under Japonaise. Will be back! read more

Unfortunately in Edmonton, we do not have a large number of great Japanese restaurants to choose from. I always miss the quality we experience from cities such as Vancouver or San Francisco. However, if you're looking for a quick fix to satisfy your sushi craving, Yokozuna definitely makes it onto my Top 10 list of Japanese restaurants in Edmonton. We started off with the Geso Age, Assorted Tempura, and Yokozuna Garlic Tuna. The batter on the Geso Age and Tempura was light, crispy, and fried to perfection. Sadly, we were not a big fan of the Yokozuna Garlic Tuna. I love garlic, but the garlic chips completely overpowered the delicate flavour of the Albacore tuna. Next we had the Chirashi, Spicy Tuna Maki, Yellowtail, Toro, Chop Chop and Mackerel Nigiri. The quality of the fish was good and the rice was seasoned well. Overall, the restaurant has a great ambience and the service is always quick. We've been coming here for years, and will continue to support them in our Edmonton food scene. read more

It's funny how things work out. I just ate a great sushi meal at another south side gem, Sushi Wasabi, but was originally debating between them and Yokozuna when we first decided that we wanted sushi for dinner. Well, fast forward two days, we were in the area and decided to try Yokozuna's out on a late Tuesday evening. "Late" meaning 8pm...gah, Edmonton, quit sucking. This little strip mall area has some surprisingly good spots (Thai Valley Grill, Pho Anh, the EPL). Yokozuna's sign is hilariously generic from the outside. They should really update their sign - it would help attract people driving by. But for those in the know, already know Yokozuna is legit as they come, being run by a Japanese family. It was our first time eating here and we were pleasantly surprised. The place is nicely renovated with a sleek, modern look with nice wooden furnishing, good lighting and ample privacy. There were only a few tables occupied so we didn't have to wait long to get our food. Potentially our wait to order may have been longer. No biggie though as it let us peruse the menu to its fullest. We had a very friendly waitress who gave us great service. - Green tea ($1.00 each) - we were brought a tea press full of green tea. Love when they do that so that you don't have to keep on asking for re-fills. - Yokzuna garlic tuna ($17.50) - this was off the charts good. Great appetizer to start our meal off. The tataki was made up of albacore tuna, spinach, onion and garlic ponzu. The sauce was ahmaaaazing. The tuna had that melt in your mouth texture and seriously, spinach on the bottom was a bonus/genius idea. - Ohzeki ($35.00) - monster plate of delicious, fresh sashimi. Beautifully executed, properly cut and look at the size of these pieces. Those are some quality, thick pieces. You get 5 pieces each of salmon and tuna, 4 scallops, 6 hokkigai (surf clam), 3 tai (red snapper) and tako (octopus), and 2 saba (mackeral) and ebi (shrimp). That's 30 pieces for $35.00. Very, very reasonable especially considering it's Edmonton. Works out to $1.17 a piece! DEAL. - Spicy salmon roll ($8.50) - The spicy salmon roll consisted of salmon, cucumber and sesame while the rainbow roll had tempura shrimp, lettuce, masago, salmon, tuna, tai, ebi and avocado. The spicy salmon was actually spicy. - Rainbow roll ($12.00) - We ordered the rainbow roll because it was apparently the "best" in town, but for us, it was pretty ordinary. Not that anything was wrong with it but it could have used a sauce or something to make it stand out. - Chop chop maki ($6.00) - chop chop's are the best. - Hamachi (yellow tail) nigiri ($5.25) - The nigiri comes in pairs (2 pieces per order) so we tried out the hamachi, which was absolutely delicious. This might be one of my favourite types to order There was a lot of sushi on that plate (8 pieces for the rolls and 6 pieces for the smaller makis). We ended up having to take a dozen home (lucky me!). We were very impressed with Yokozuna. Another south side gem to add to the go again list. Their dishes are creative and and have amazing presentation. The staff are friendly, professional and service us in a non rushed and efficient manner. I ordered the standard fair for visiting a new Japanese place. Agedashi tofu, 2 pieces of Saba (mackerel) and a bento box which consisted of sashimi, teriyaki chicken and tempura. The tempura batter was very thick and the teriyaki chicken was like warm and hard (probably pre-maid). The sashimi was cut really nice and had some good flavours. I'll probably try it again but it's. Decent Japanese place on the south side - it's not the best sushi you'll find in Edmonton, but really, why are you looking for the best sushi you'll ever have in Edmonton anyway? They have some decent rolls, they also have a pretty standard selection of bento boxes, and what you'd normally expect to find. The interior is definitely nicer than average though, I particularly like the little private tables in mini rooms where you take off your shoes at the doorway and then sit around a sunken table - great for groups. Service is great, the staff are so welcoming and friendly. The genmaicha tea is amazing and they have the best miso soup I have had at a Japanese restaurant. The sashimi is fresh and thick (I personally prefer that to paper thin slices but I understand its a personal preference) If you are not super hungry the skewers all taste pretty good, but you don't get much so its best either as an aside to more food or for those who don't eat much. The bento boxes are very filling. Try the grey stuff, it's delicious. (the sesame ice cream, looks a bit intimidating to some, but soooo good) Also added stars for how accommodating they are to allergies. read more

As well some skewers the chicken thighs, scallop and pork belly nothing special probably wouldn't order those next time as the scallops were overcooked. We also ordered the grill salmon and it was dry the teriyaki sauce helped but wouldn't order next time I would recommend trying the rolls they offer and avoid the grilled items read more

I've never eaten at Yokozuna but I was craving sushi, in the area, and since I'd just had Sushi Wasabi, I wanted to try somewhere new. This place had pretty good reviews (thanks Yelpers!) so I thought I would check it out. They have their entire menu online, which was really helpful - I was able to phone in my order ahead of time and maximize my time doing other things. They have a decent menu with some unique maki (in addition to classics), and I really like the sashimi choices (3, 6, or 12 pieces, or one of two preset choices with the exact number of pieces of each seafood listed). They also had yakitori on their menu so of course I had to try some, though there is a minimum order of 3 skewers (can mix-and-match). I really enjoyed the chicken heart and gizzard skewers - I'm a sucker for organ meats and here they were thinly sliced, grilled, and with my choice of teriyaki sauce (or salt). The scallop skewer was good too but one of the pieces was really chewy. The skewers aren't very big so I don't think it's a great deal, but I don't see yakitori often so it's still nice to have several choices here. For maki, I ordered spicy salmon, black dragon, and seafood tar tar. They were all delicious. I'm glad I saw someone else's tip to ask for no teriyaki sauce on the tar tar roll - this way the clean flavours of the fresh seafood come through. The black dragon comes drizzled in their spicy mayo sauce - I wish I'd know about that - next time I'll ask for it on the side as it was still tasty. Spicy salmon roll was good as well, nice big chunks of salmon, and not overwhelmingly spicy. I had leftovers the next day and the rice on the maki held together relatively well. The komosubi sashimi was fantastic. Nice big pieces of everything and I like the proportions of everything rather than 3 pieces of each seafood. The tuna was melt-in-your-mouth awesomeness. The salmon wasn't as flavourful as Wasabi's, but still very good. I wish the ebi was actually the small sweet raw shrimp that places sometimes have, rather than cooked regular shrimp. The mackerel was amazing! It was served with a dab of green onions and minced ginger, and I thought that it wasn't fishy (though my husband said it still was a little, and burped up that taste hours later...). It's not the cheapest place but it's fresh and tasty, so I would definitely come back in the future. read more

Not impressed . All our menus were put out wet PLUS we were told we could not have a tatami room because we were only four people. They had a room available....we came here because of the renovatioions and wanting the experience of the room. We asked the staff again for a room and told we could only have it IF we paid a mandatory 18 percent gratuity....ugh. We took the room because our young diners were the focus of our evening. I do not agree with mandatory tipping at all. The menu seems impressive but is not inclusive of many traditional dishes one would expect from this restaurant. Trendy and fusion dishes seem to be the focus including gizzard skewers and assorted tacos. The was really tasty but menu is confusing to read and limits a diner's choices. I doubt we will ever go back because it is expensive and we felt we were inconveniencing the staff by even being there. We will pay for good food! But not to feel like that! I hope others have better experiences, but this is not my choice for a high end Japanese restaurant in the Edmonton area. read more

Just spent Valentine's Night with my spouse at this restaurant. Reservations were made but when we arrived, it was a little disorganized because they really were not sure where to seat us. We did get a nice little corner section to ourselves though. The food was really good. They had a Valentine's dinner for two that filled us both up. Size of things were pretty good. It had a salad, miso soup, sashimi, rolls, tempura. It also came with ice cream for dessert. We also ordered a taco salad for a extra appetizer dish. As just relocated from Vancouver I was craving sushi for lunch. Based on the Yelp reviews I popped in and was so pleasantly surprised. By far the best I've had in Edmonton to date and still looking to try other gems based on reviews! They made things for me that weren't on the menu but have always been my favourite such as the salmon avocado roll and did a beautiful ebi Sunomono for me. Loved the ambiance and was a great place to escape the office for an hour. Will definitely be bringing my spouse back so we can enjoy some of the others and dip into the Sake together! Outside doesn't do this place justice! Such a cute personal sushi experience as a majority of the tables are sectioned off. We tried a bottle of hot sake that the waiter recommended, it was so smooth and delicious. At first I was a little disappointed with the variety and description of the rolls but the menu does not do it justice! The rolls are large and ingredients plentiful! They do not skimp out at all and the flavours and pairing of fish, sauces and topping were perfect. We also had tuna and salmon sashimi and definitely no complains there.
