Mike is a fantastic wedding DJ and I would definitely recommend him to others. I wanted a wedding DJ who knew how to survey a crowd and pick appropriate music, and I found that in Mike. I didn't have to pick out every song; he found music appropriate for the old and the young. I also liked Mike because when I hired him, I spoke to him, and not a company salesman. He answered every phone call/email promptly, came prepared to every meeting, and had a huge repertoire of music and could get more. What impressed me most about Mike was his ability to come up with a plan B after the groom's father and best man had to leave for an emergency. OMG - what a surprise! Mike is absolutely one of the most gifted DJ's I've witnessed. There are specific things that I want from the entertainment professional... and some things I don't want. For instance: I want a professional who can survey the crowd, get a good read on them - their likes and dislikes. I wanted someone who was unobtrusive and had the capacity to blend into the flow of the event. I did not want someone who felts the need to tell jokes or sell his services to the crowd. We were referred by Hotel de Anza to Mike for DJ service. What a phenomenal referral. We were lucky to meet Mike early on at a cake tasting that the Hotel de Anza was providing. He also met with us a few weeks before the wedding to go over all of our materials and answer our questions. I am really appreciative because he came to our rehearsal to "practice" with us and even sent me the first dance song via email. (I don't know how he found it because I had to special order it on Amazon...but he found it!) Mike provided awesome materials to help get us on track for the ceremony and the reception. I gave him pretty general ideas for dinner music and it was SPOT ON. He handled our guests really well with our no requests challenge. We hired Mike as the DJ for our wedding because he was the preferred vendor of Saratoga Country Club. We are super glad that we did because he was awesome! I was initially planning our wedding from abroad and Mike was great to work with through email. He is super organized and responsive and would send us an email confirmation whenever he received our documents and deposits. He also sent us a packet of forms for us to fill out regarding the music and logistics of our wedding. I promptly tossed it aside until I received Mike's reminder email a month prior to the wedding! We had an in-person consultation with him a few weeks before our wedding. He provided his expertise on what music would be suitable for specific activities, had us spell out the names of our bridal party phonetically, and reviewed the logistics of our big day. He even came to our rehearsal to play our ceremony music so that we could practice walking with the music! On the day of the wedding, Mike was great! Mike was amazing for my wedding on Labor Day weekend. I completely recommend him to any couples who want a chill, experienced, savvy DJ who will gauge your crowd, be flexible when needed, and ultimately support you on your wedding day. Preparation: Mike has decades of experience, so he gives you a packet full of preparation documents to help keep you organized. Personality: DJs always strike me as in-your-face and cheesy, but Mike is very easygoing. Our guests loved him, and we didn't have 1 cheesy moment. Music choice: Completely up to you. If you want him to have control, that's fine. If you want to have complete creative control, that's cool, too. We were more of the latter, and Mike was very supportive of it. We even had the FFVIII victory song play as we were announced husband and wife. Flexibility: We were generally very good about being on schedule, but Mike was great about changing up the schedule when needed. There was also a situation toward the end of the night that he got a request for a song on my "NO PLAY" list, but he approached me, and seeing that lots of people were dancing, I agreed to have him play it. When my wife and I started our planning process of our wedding, I assumed a DJ was one of the least important pieces of a wedding. I figured anyone can play some music, and anyone can buy speakers and equipment. However, Mike Ewing is so much more than a DJ. He is a "wedding whisperer"... let me explain: Mike Ewing made our day a success... almost single handed. When we met with Mike, our personalities jived perfectly and both my wife and I knew he was perfect for our event. Little did I know, but Mr. Ewing organized our entire reception minute for minute with a detailed spreadsheet that outlined what is happening when, and what song is going to be played at that moment. We were able to see our reception 12 months before we got married! This was extremely helpful because our venue (The Ranch Golf Club) has a rotating door of wedding coordinators (4 coordinators in 4 months prior to our wedding), so it was never easy getting information from them. Yet through all the unnecessary stress our venue was putting on us, Mike was there as a reliable source of information, and the knowledge that Mike is on the job made both my wife and I breath a little easier. He is quick to respond to e-mails, which is amazing because everyone isn't (check my review for the Ranch later) and is completely open to your ideas and input for music selection and event flow. His music library is massive, and if there is a song he doesn't have, he will get it for you. Overall, his service is top notch. Lastly, it's Mike's personality that is really the piece that puts this DJ over the top. He is a very nice guy that is always willing to help and go the extra mile. There is nothing he won't do to ensure your wedding/event is flawless, and ours was an excellent example. He works well with your other vendors, and in our case it was Ken Kato (photographer) and we modified our event flow during the reception, and because of the communication between Mike and Mr. Kato our guest wouldn't even know that we changed things up. Mike also is kind of the "enforcer". During my father-in-law's speech there was a little group of people near the bar area that were speaking loudly, and Mike and I made eye contact and he knew exactly what needed to be done. He asked them quietly, but forcefully, to be silent and because of that all guests heard every word. He was brilliant before that moment, but after that he was flawless. I hired Mike Ewing to DJ my wedding ceremony and reception in June 2011 in San Jose at a hotel and was more than pleased every step of the way. After first making an e-mail inquiry, Mike called me on the phone and it was good to hear his voice and make that personal connection. I was impressed by this. No other DJ followed through like Mike did when I requested service over the internet. My husband and I had a couple of meetings with Mike to discuss the venue and expectations. He was always early for the appointments and came thoroughly prepared with his laptop. He was willing to meet us at a Starbucks by our home in the East Bay. He uses a great template to help with song selection and bridal party introductions. He provided a jump drive for us to listen to the most popularly chosen songs. He edited our first dance song choice for us by speeding it up a little bit and had it approved for its "dance-ability" by a dance teacher! Mike gave us time the day before the wedding to attend the wedding rehearsal at the hotel and he cued the music for our wedding coordinator, pastor, and all of the bridal party. He's fantastic, organized, professional, courteous, accommodating, detail-oriented, generous, and he follows through on changes and decisions. As a professional in the event industry for over 24 years as a videographer, I have worked with hundreds of DJs. They can either make or break the spirit of an event. I recently worked with Mike at a wedding and reception where he not only worked as a true team player with all the vendors, but made sure the client had the best experience possible. Much attention to small details, such as a well organized timeline, communicating well with the client and vendors, a personalized music CD for the couple as a surprise, and making sure they received the most amount of time to enjoy their day, by keeping the schedule on track. We had Mike DJ our wedding reception at the end of May and he did a fantastic job. We selected him because he was a preferred vendor at the Saratoga Country Club where our reception was held. He has been a preferred vendor with them for years and the strength of their relationship showed in the service quality. After we booked, he sent us a packet of paperwork and a flash drive with sample songs for each wedding "event" (cake cutting, Grand Entrance etc.) that we could copy onto our hard drive. You are free to use a suggested song, or pick any other song you want. You can let him use his discretion for music, take requests, or select each individual song yourself for him to play (the option we took). Basically, you can be as specific or as general as you want and he will work with you. Unlike other DJ's I have seen at previous weddings, he asked for an in-person meeting a couple months prior to the wedding date. We had sent in our music selections beforehand and he complimented us on our selections and went over every detail of our paperwork including our itinerary, which he had confirmed with the country club before the meeting. We had worked out our itinerary with the country club and they contacted him to confirm it THAT NIGHT. So when we met with him the next day, he already had all of the information we had given them in addition to our paperwork. Both vendors were absolutely on the ball. He even made suggestions for higher quality recordings of our songs that we didn't even know about and edited down dance songs that were too long. On the wedding day, he was waiting at the venue to greet us and hype us up before the Grand Entrance. He met the wedding party, went into the dining room to announce us, and then the wedding just got better and better. He (thankfully) said that his philosophy is to refrain from bullying people to dance. He did not self promote or monopolize our guest's attention in any way. He was enthusiastic, warm, and kind. He kept an eye on the schedule, worked with the venue staff to help move the reception along, and stuck to our songs selections exactly. We received several compliments from guests on his work. The reception was over right on time! We were one of 3 weddings he was DJ-ing that weekend, but he made us feel like we were his only one. Email communication was automatic. Answers to all of our questions, detailed payment confirmations, and music files of songs we wanted but could not find ourselves were emailed to us extremely quickly. We even received CD's of all of our dinner music selections to keep as gifts! We will enjoy playing them for our anniversary. BTW, for shy families, we highly suggest the "Good Luck Dance" where he announces that each person on the dance floor will mean 1 year of good luck for the happy couple. You are invited to come to the dance floor, but are not required to dance. Our dance floor was packed! My new husband whispered to me that we now have enough good luck to last us the rest of our lives! Mike definitely went above and beyond anything we ever expected. We hired Mike for our wedding at the San Mateo County History Museum and I am SO glad that we found him. When I first met him he was incredibly professional and though he had never worked at the venue before, he had called around to get details from other DJs and came prepared with a recommendation for how we set things up. I told him a little about what we were looking for and he just got it immediately. In follow up venue visits he was always early and accommodating with all of the venue requirements and my requests. He responded to all of my emails promptly -- and I sent quite a few in the weeks leading up to the event. It is also important to note that he is the nicest guy and that really makes a difference when selecting what vendors you work with. Then, the big day happened and he was flawless. He read the crowd and was able to play song after song that kept every one of our wedding guests on the dance floor. Guests at our wedding were predominantly in their late 20's and he was able to find songs that worked for those guests as well as our older relatives. Everyone had a blast. One of my fears was that we wouldn't have enough people dancing but he selected the best first dance song (for everyone to kick off the party) to get everyone out there and then followed it up with hit after hit to keep everyone out there. I've never had so much fun! After the wedding, the most common review has been that our music was amazing. It set the mood for a fun party while still retaining a classy wedding feel. I honestly didn't realize how important selecting the right DJ was until after our wedding and I am so thankful that we were lucky and ended up with Mike.
