I purchased a very inexpensive 3/4 scale bass guitar as a gift (along with a much more expensive guitar), and I even received a brand new model still in the box. The recipient preferred a different color, and Mike - the owner himself - refused to exchange it for a different one, despite the fact that it has been purchased within the last two weeks, was unplayed, and still in the box. You would have lost absolutely nothing to exchange a $200 bronco bass for another color, but now you've lost my business entirely. You can buy a guitar ANYWHERE (like Bill's, Guitar Center, even Music & Arts) - don't give your business to someone who can't honor one of the simplest and most common requests in retail. Edit to respond to the comment: I called, spoke to an employee who took my information down and said he had to ask you, Mike. An entire WEEK later, this kid calls me back and explains that you refused to honor the exchange. So you're right, you haven't even taken the time to speak to me yourself. The situation didn't escalate until you waited a week to tell someone else to tell me "no". read more

I came here on a whim a few weeks ago to get some new strings for my guitar, looked up "Music Shop" nearby me and found this gem. Everyone was wearing masks, and required for all customers. Came back in yesterday when I had a day off and had another great experience. The folks at the front desk have been super helpful with all my dumb questions, everyone has been super friendly and they've got a very nice selection for being a local small business. I came in yesterday for a new pedal and they let me play around before buying it, they have a great system in place where they asked me to place any guitars I used back on the wall with strings facing the wall so that they would know which ones need to be cleaned. Have been coming here for some time waiting on the kids while they take lessons. This is a pretty busy place and I bought my first PRS here since I like supporting these smaller places versus the big chains. Had a guitar that they recently adjusted for free, and the place has a wide selection of musical instruments and needed items like strings, picks, etc. There is also some space at the back that you can try out the wares! Terrible experience. Took my $$ when I bought two instruments for my kid. Website says will buy instruments back. Showed up. I was told they do not buy back. Shameful. UPDATE: Someone from Mike's Music responded to my post. DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! Before I made my purchase, I ASKED the staff member serving me if I would be able to bring the instrument I purchased back and get a nominal amount back. The response was yes. So, to whoever responded, I still give you 1 Star for horrible customer service and deceiving me as a patron. I will not go into your store again. 2nd Update This is another post about deceptive Mike's Music and the rental/buyback policy... Mikes Music although endorsed by the local elemetary school, I have discoverd a real deception in Mike's buisness practices. Rented to own two different instruments. Was told that if your child changes their mind and chooses another instrument a percentange of your original investment can be deducted from the new one. This isn't true, event though they promote this option as a real usful benifit. Was told the only way this is applicalble is on the day you rent the second instrument, you must have the original instrument with you. If you don't and sign up for the new instument,without having the origina onel you are disqualifed and all money invested is forfeit. I was very dissapointed as the school sends home flyers promoting Mike's music. I hope my message is read by other parents. I will avoid Mike's Music in the future and request the school allows for parent warnings to be added to the children take home folders. read more

When we moved here a few years ago we began looking around for a place to continue the munchkins' music education. There are several places in the area the munchkins could go for studying music, but after talking to a few people and reading a bunch of internet scuttlebutt we ended up choosing Mike's Music. Let's start with the important stuff. These are 1-on-1 music lessons. Their prices are competitive. Their prices are on par with the least expensive places we looked at. However, the education is above and beyond. This is a place to give your children a real love of music. They have perhaps a dozen or more teachers who offer instruction in a variety of instruments. With all those teachers they also have lots of flexibility for class times. They also have a pretty big selection of instruments and people who know their stuff, so if you're in the market for an instrument or just need to get something for it, this is also the place to go. Just a few weeks ago they had a recital for the students, and it was really wonderful to see all of the students and how they're all developing. Mike is a full-on musician and it's really cool to see a small business "make it" in a field that he obviously loves. I'm happy to send the munchkins here. I had to get my kids instruments. The staff was so helpful. They were knowledgeable and kind. I wound up leaving with all of the supplies I needed- I purchased a used bell kit for one son and rented a saxophone for the other. Great space, informative staff, top-notch practice rooms and a really nice assortment of instruments and sheet music. Wish we lived closer so we could spend more time at this place. We recently traveled to Baltimore for the funeral service of our grandfather, who spent many years playing as a professional jazz musician. We had plans to play some music at his service, but the funeral home didn't have a keyboard. We conducted a quick search and found Mike's, gave them a call - we only needed the keyboard for a few hours. The staff let us demo a few different keyboards in the store, answered our questions, and lent us the keyboard (and sustaining pedal), free of charge. We were really touched by that. The BEST music store we have ever been to before! We needed a tuner for our daughter's saxophone. Jen was so pleasant and helpful on the phone when I called to make sure they had one in stock. Once at the store, we were amazed at how nice the space was and Jen even took us on a tour of the entire store. They have many soundproof rooms for lessons, a stage for student concerts and a comfy waiting area for parents in addition to their retail area which includes some beautiful guitars. Everyone was just happy to be there. The tuner we purchased was reasonable and the staff took the time to explain how to use it and tips for best results. Fantastic experience. Everyone was incredibly helpful and friendly. I am also truly impressed by what they offer here. I found an electric guitar I had been looking for on their site (at a lower price than any other retailer!) but I also noticed the variety of instruments they carry online, from band and orchestra instruments to acoustic and electric guitars, even banjos and ukes. I noticed they have many left handed and beginner model guitars too, not just expensive models like American made Fenders. Great selection of used instruments at amazing prices too. There were a few kids there with their parents, maybe getting their first instrument or getting repairs, and I could just tell, this store is all about spreading the joy of music to as many people as possible, and that really made an impression. Very happy to have found this store, it's about a 35 minute drive from me, and guitar center is only 15, but it was worth it and I will absolutely be coming back. Love my new Fender too!! read more

I had a few very disappointing experiences with this shop, and will definitely take my business elsewhere: It began when I dropped off my mother's guitars to be restrung and looked over for any issues. My mother recently passed away, and these guitars are very important to me: she learned to play on them in 1965. So, in addition to them being worth money, they are also priceless. I specifically asked that they remain in the store and not be sent out until I was notified what they needed. That way I knew where they'd be. No problem, I was told, and my request was even marked on the receipt. I was also said I'd here back in a few hours. Well, no one got back to me at all for the rest of the day, and into the day tomorrow. I followed up with the store and was told that one of the guitars was almost done being restrung, and would be done soon. The other guitar? You guessed it: they had sent it out to be looked over, despite the fact that I specifically did not give them the authorization to do that until they told me what was going on. The saleswoman could not have cared less when I expressed frustration. She brushed me off without apologizing at all. Never once was I referred to a manager or anyone to take over the call. Never once did anyone apologize. All told I spent close to $500 on the guitars. The best part? When I got home with the classical guitar, I found one of the strings was broken. They had strung it too tightly, and it has snapped before I even got it home. When I told the saleswoman about the broken string: again, no apology. She said she'd have to check to see if they could restring the single string for free. They will nickel and dime you, and won't stand behind your work. They don't communicate well, and didn't make me feel valued as a customer, or respected. Take your business elsewhere. read more

FANTASTIC! Great service. Quick, friendly, knowledgeable staff. New instruments (at least they look new). I went to them directly from my disastrous run-in with Music & Art, and I couldn't haven been more pleasantly surprised. It took less than 15 minutes from walking in to carrying out an instrument, and the whole store was buzzing with parents and various aged kids. I had asked for the wrong music book and went back much later to ask them to exchange it. The one I exchanged it for cost $1 more, but the wonderful lady who was helping me said she wouldn't ask for the dollar. I asked her if that was alright and she said as long as I wasn't on the losing end, she's very happy to do it. I love this place and so far, everyone there! read more

I had a very unpleasant experience with my son's voice instructor. I enrolled my son for help with an upcoming audition. She decided to change the audition song that we already selected, without even being familiar with the song that we had selected. We were very underwhelmed with her song selection and when we politely questioned her on it, she got incredibly defensive,was very condescending and basically told us, the parents that we didn't need to be so involved (the nerve!). She then later went into a BS explanation of vocal ranges and how the previous song that we had selected didn't suit his vocal range; except she was not familiar with the song and never heard my son sing it. When I complained to the owners, they supported her response. I was very disappointed with the way we were treated, this was a total waste of my money and time. I can't speak for her teaching ability because her ego got in the way. read more
