I am having so much fun at the Let There Be Rock School in Columbia! The instructors are friendly, knowledgeable, skilled musicians who seem to honestly enjoy sharing what they know. They work well with kids and adults alike. Currently I am in private guitar lessons and have not myself tried the band program, but I've gone to several of the school concerts now. These are not your regular "music school recitals" - these bands really rock and the kids (ranging from teens down to really young ones, and ok some "overgrown kids" like me) look like they're having a great time. I've also noticed how much the kids who stay with the program for a while really improve both musically and in terms of confidence and "showmanship" from one show to the next. (Ok, and it doesn't hurt that these shows take place at a bar that serves food and drinks throughout the whole performance!) I whole-heartedly recommend LTBRS-Columbia to anyone looking for serious musical training in a fun environment for their kids or for themselves. read more

Awesome! We just move to this area not long ago and basically took a gamble and won on their summer camp program. My kids had more interest in electronics then instruments but this has been a fantastic introductory to music and the joys of playing in an actual band!?!! I have been raving to all my friends about the instructors and how they are actual professionals and not high school or college kids just looking for a summer gig! And this is not like many camps out there that are just glorified day care! We actually have changed our radio stations to classic rock instead of kids bop and the kids are talking to me about the Beetles and Rolling Stones. I'm very impressed with what Rock Shop has to offer and look forward to future lessons for the kids after camp is over! Thank you Rock Shop for a refreshing summer change ! My son has been playing guitar in a band for a couple of years, and it's been a phenomenal experience. The friendships developed among the kids in the band (and their parents!) have been great. Even more fun is watching the band develop some real, defined performance skills as they get more comfortable with their instruments and gain music knowledge. Playing shows in Ellicott City, at Merriweather, etc. lets them show off their skills within the community. It really is incredible what these instructors do with just an hour or so of practice each week. There is so much commitment to teaching a lifelong skill that these kids will be able to take with them wherever they go. Can't recommend this place highly enough! read more

My daughter has attended both performance based schools in Columbia, SOR and Soundcheck Rock Academy. Souncheck Academy surpasses SOR. At Soundcheck my daughter is in a real band where everyone plays every song on the set list. Soundcheck also offers shows throughout the community for all bands to perform. SOR only offers community performances for a single "All Star" band. Everyone is an All Star at Soundcheck! During the next three months, Soundcheck Rock Academy will play three different venues, Ellicott City Spring Fest, MP3 fest at Merriweather and the quarterly show at the Soundry! This is the music school for you. Our 2 boys have been in the program for just under 2 years and we couldn't be happier. Not only are the teachers amazing and talented, but they inspire the students to excel. By focusing on music the kids want to play it makes them excited to practice and perform. The boys were put into a band and they have learned the importance of teamwork and preparation. The school has provided opportunities to play dream gigs including Merriweather Post Pavilion and various local music festivals in addition to their quarterly shows. read more

Best way to learn to play an instrument. Amazing experience for kids (and their parents). The music is fun (pop/rock), so the individual lessons are more engaging than traditional approaches. The band program is where the school really shines. Not only do they get to do amazing performances around the community, but the band experience teaches them about teamwork, loyalty, and persistence. read more
