Mike's has been in this very same location since 1967 and from the moment you walk in you can tell. The interior doesn't remind you so much of a barber as your grandpa's garage but as you get to talking with Mike, it definitely fits. I'll say straight out that I'm never very happy with my hair coming out of any barber, so getting it short and manageable is really me end goal. What made me a repeat customer is a couple things. First off, my haircuts have never taken more than 8 minutes. Tops. Then he has this fantastic little shop vac that he uses to suction off loose hair before you go. None of that blow drier nonsense which just shoots the hair into the nooks and crannies of my ears and usually into my clothes. Lastly it's cheap. $7 for a men's haircut. Just be sure to let him know what his tip is before he rings up your credit card. He doesn't keep the transaction open for you to add one afterwards. read more

I took my two boys to this barber shop. The owner, Craig, has renovated the shop. He cut the boy's hair well, gave me good tips for their hair types, and his prices were very reasonable. He was accommodating with scheduling us in last minute, which I appreciated a lot! Mike's is great. Another reviewer said cash only, he takes cards now but if you want to tip, tell him before he runs the card. Maybe it's a girl thing, I always tip. Why a girl at Mike's Barbershop? I take my toddler there to get his haircut. He's probably had 4-5 cuts at Mike's and while still slightly nervous about it, he stays still and talks about it before and after. Mike has a little chair with a steering wheel that my son LOVES and gives him a lollipop after. There are a bunch of toys in the front so my other kids can play for the ten minutes max it takes for the haircut. My husband also gets his hair cut here and likes it. I will say, this isn't a salon. It's a place where a guy named Mike chats with his buddies while he cuts hair for absurdly cheap prices. Seriously, he could charge double and I'd still think it was cheap. I was getting my haircut regularly at Mike's barber shop. I came in today, Saturday, March 14, for a haircut, and I walked out after hearing Mike say something about communicable diseases and something about HIV, and John Holmes --- the gay porn star of the 1970's. Mike said to the customer, hat he had a joke for him. I did not hear the joke, but I did hear the barber (Mike) speak in a low voice so that other patrons wouldn't hear. What I did hear him say was that "he didn't make them up (the jokes) but passed them along". The customer, with his two sons present, said " I've no sympathy for them". Did this bigot mean like in Africa, or swathes of Asia, where it is a heterosexual disease. Or would that sympathy be conditional because they were of another race? Interestingly, It's not the first time I've heard old bigots in his shop running their mouths about "the younger generation" " Liberals want one world government", and I even heard one guy say that "he hated Muslims." ---that they better get used to having the bible (their religion) in government ---an outright threat to those of us who believe in the Separation of Church and State. In fact, I observed the young man is his barber chair react with dismay and disgust at that time when we all heard what they were saying. Mike did not say anything to those men then, at least while I was there, and so I wasn't shocked to witness what I did. He could have said that they were entitled to their opinions but to keep it out of his barber shop, but he didn't. I won't be going back. read more

As soon as I walked through the door I was denied service (assuming because I'm black). I walked into the shop around 10:30am on a Saturday morning, and after greeting each other the barber quickly said "I can't cut your hair", with no explanation as to why. I told him that I'm not from the Clintonville area and looking for a place to cut my hair. I have a job nearby and didn't have time to go to my usual barber in the New Albany area. He told me I should head a few blocks east to the Linden area (predominately black and somewhat unsafe neighborhood). What a shame that people still operate in this manner, especially in such a prominent community in Columbus. I'm a local professional and often do contract work in the Clintonville area for my businesses as well as for my 501c3 non-profit. I will share my experience with my cohorts and business partners in the area. *** Edit: for the record, I'm willing to be objective in my experience today - maybe his clippers broke the night before? But that's not likely because I heard and saw him using them. If the owner would like to respond and explain why any customer would be turned away at first glance, as I was. I would be glad to adjust my rating. And for those who may be skeptical of my appearance and demeanor, possibly being the reason why I was turned down - I am 32 and a black male, I am also a 6 figure professional in multiple art related professions, i work in project management for one of the largest most respected financial firms in the nation. My hair is short and easy to cut, and I dress (some would say) hipster like... but today I'm wearing designer boots, jeans and a Lacoste sport coat. Before I began shaving my head, I got my hair cut at Mike's for years. The owner is the only barber. He is very friendly, fun to talk to, and just a good guy. He also gives the fastest haircuts I've ever seen. He does a good job, and for an excellent price. If you want a good haircut fast and cheap (and who doesn't?), give Mike's a try. Started going to Mike about 2 years ago. I drive out of my way now to have Mike trim my hair and beard. I wont trust anyone else to touch my hair. A few times I have noticed a mistake on my hair and when I notice I stop back in and he fixes it. It has never been a big mistake just a hair or two longer but love giving him a hard time about it. There has been a few times i stopped in to just say hi due to not having the money on hand he still trimmed my hair and beard. He also helps people in the area who needs a hand up.
