I've tried a lot of barbershops, a lot of them in big, fancy West Coast cities. Yet after I relocated to Columbus last year, I have to say -- no one has ever cut my hair better than Dave at Longview. It's a great experience. Book online so you walk right in. Dave is always on time. He confirms what I want, he tells me some stories, and then 20-25 minutes later, I look great -- and for half the price of what I used to pay in Seattle. I haven't always enjoyed getting haircuts and thought they were a waste of time, but now with Dave's efficiency and consistently great results, I'm happy to come every 3-4 weeks. Now reopened after the quarantine. Appointment-only works well for this; walk-in barbershops will be chaotic. Longview is limiting the number of barbers and patrons, cleaning (more than usual; they were always good about it) between clients, wearing masks and even face shields. I've been coming here for roughly a year and a half now. Crazy how time flies. For those looking for walk ins, this may not be the place for you, as most of the barbers work on appointment basis. So from a convenience standpoint it may not be the easiest to get in. The barber I see is Rob, who does an absolutely fantastic job every time. I have never once received a haircut from him I didn't absolutely love. He's perfect for people who have course hair especially, like myself. He can do just about anything you ask of him. This was my first time trying out Longview Barbershop, and I am thoroughly impressed with my haircut and service by Alyssa! I scheduled my appointment (very last minute, as in the morning of) and Alyssa had a small opening for my taper/fade style cut -- the process can be a bit confusing if you don't know what style you want (fade/taper, regular haircut, etc.) and the price and timing is dependent on it. The website does have description for those unsure. Walking in, the place was quite busy and has a very casual ambiance with the 2 rows of 4 barbers on each side working their crafts. From kids to professional adults, they do it all! Now to the reason I gave the 5 stars -- the haircut and service! Alyssa is a gem who welcomed me to the area as we chatted about various topics (travels, styles of haircut, etc.). There were some quiet moments which was fine with me -- don't mind either to be honest. The barbers do converse back and forth quite a bit and Alyssa provided snippets to fill me in. When it was all said and done, she gave me updates on what she did and I really love my haircut! I told her in the beginning that I usually do a partial comb-over and it was for a professional setting, and she delivered -- and also added the touch that allows my hair to grow out some and not look awkward. First off, you must make an appointment. Otherwise, you will be sitting there for awhile until someone asks you if you have one. The barbers are professional and are passionate about their craft. Be patient and your name will be called..and tip well. They will appreciate it and once you make another appointment for your regular cut, you will be remembered and warmly welcomed back. Starting in April, 2019, Longview has changed its business model. Longview is staffed by the same great barbers / stylists. All barbers now take appointments. Walk-ins are only accepted, if time permits, (i.e. when barbers don't have appointments scheduled). It's unclear whether they all now will take walk-ins, which was not the previous case. Their web site is newly redesigned to accommodate the change. Navigating the appointment process is oriented toward the individual barber / stylist, not the customer. The home page does display each barber and their next available time, but you have to look deeper if their next available does not align with your own. To schedule an appointment, you start off selecting a barber first, rather than finding a time when my schedule allows me to get a haircut. I literally found myself going back and forth between barber calendars until I find a matching time, if there was one. The navigating back and forth makes the process extremely slow, cumbersome and frustrating when trying to find a time that fits my busy lifestyle. Plus, prices now vary from one barber to another. Available hours also vary and are different from posted shop hours. Some barbers post availability as early as 6:30 a.m. and others to as late as 6 p.m. Some are only available select days. The variability makes it all more complicated in knowing what to expect. Longview is a great, locally owned shop to get a quality hair cut or style! As they change and loose reasons why I would make the drive to Longview, it becomes harder to use them. Street parking can be challenging at times. I often have to park a couple blocks away or further. Pricing ranges slightly higher to being comparable with other locally owned barber shops that are much closer to me. Would I go to Longview in the future? Yes, but am using a local shop more fitting for my busy life now. read more

I decided to drop by here for a haircut since my friend had visited and it's cheaper than my regular $20 cut at Studio Posh. Cuts are only $12 here, and they're very solid. I showed up around 1pm on a Thursday. All 3 barbers were in and attending to people, and I was the only one who had to wait. I signed my name, decided to put down Nick as my recommended barber since he seemed popular, and took a seat. 10 minutes later, I started my cut, and I was out within another 20 minutes. Overall, Nick did a great job with my cut, and he was very friendly. Got my standard cut with a 3 on the sides and about 1-1.5 inches on the top. Probably a bit too short, but I did ask him to cut some more after his initial sweep. He was very knowledgeable, and said that I could pretty much do whatever I want with my hair since it's quite full and a bit curly unlike most Asian guys. read more

Jeremy gives consistently great haircuts every time, is fun to talk with, and is super professional and attentive to his clients. This is certainly reflected in his book of business: he is one of my busiest folks there and has gone to appointment only several days a week. A few tips if you are going to go to Longview: 1. As of the date of this post, they give a discount (a dollar or two) for paying in cash. Either way, prices are very reasonable for the quality of cut you receive. 2. You can look to see what the wait is like on their website--they have a live feed of their waiting list. 3. Parking is street parking only. I had my first experience today at Longview, and afterwards I'm sure it will be one of many! After signing in on their sheet, I grabbed a paper and sat down. I was pleasantly surprised when they called my name because I had made it through only 2 or 3 articles. When I sat down with Dave and we began discussing what I wanted to do with my hair, I presented him with some ideas which he promptly expanded upon, explained, and ran with. He demonstrated a knowledge and dedication to his craft that I really respected. The haircut was executed quickly and skillfully and with no hangups along the way. Dave was very cordial and talkative which I really appreciated! I've had plenty of haircuts in other places where you're just left sitting in quiet awkwardness waiting for your hair to be done, not so here. More so when I had additional grooming questions for him after the haircut he was happy to afford me all the information I was looking for. The price for this outing was just right at a combined total of $19 between my haircut and beard trim, though I'd make sure you bring along some extra cash for what I'm sure will be a well deserved tip. Walk-ins Only! So crucial to my hair game. Who the fuck knows three months in advance that they're going to need a haircut? This is my problem with Old Familiar, Vice and Turner's. I can't get in! No such issues at Longview. Walk in, put your name on the sign in sheet, and wait. Usually you don't wait too terribly long either. I've gone to Dave both times because he did a great job the first time around and matched my beard up to the haircut at no additional cost. There are like six chairs or something so even when there is a decent line, it moves quickly. I see myself going back here more often. I'm probably not the best judge of barber shops, since I go for a haircut sporadically, but I had an excellent experience at Longview Barber Shop today. I had heard that they get pretty slammed, I figured if I went early in the day while all the normal people are at work I'd get in pretty quick. I was totally right. I was in the chair so fast I didn't even have time to chat up Mary(?) a dangerous-looking redhead who was cutting hair and breaking hearts, well, my heart, le sigh. Dave took great care of me, I went from fur trapper to young professional in a few short minutes. Lively conversation the whole time. Did you know they've been open since 1919!?! Wow! They're the oldest business in Clintonville, pretty cool. While I was there some fella came in to take photos for a project or something. Dave says it happens all the time. Great experience! Very friendly neighborhood barbershop that has been dicing the follicles since 1919. I was in Ohio for just a few days but headed over there after looking in my hotel mirror and saying, "Enough is enough." I was experimenting with different cuts but decided to just buzz the mop off and start over. Dave took me on and couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. The Place: Longview is located about a block south of North Broadway on the east side of High St. Parking is on-street, so brush up on your parallel skills. The shop itself contains 3 barber stations along the right side of the space, seating (maybe 12 seats) along the left side of the space, and a kids-space in the back for any young-ins waiting on pop's haircut or for one of their own. There are televisions (3 or so) here and there, normally set on ESPN [being that this is a place for MEN ; ) ] The store is clean and tidy, and warm even on winter days. The Service: There are 3 barbers cutting hair throughout the day. Longview is walk-in only, which has its benefits and detriments. I've walked in before and had a short, 5 minute wait, and I've also walked in and waited an hour plus before going under the scissors. All of the barbers are very nice, and every cut I've gotten has been top-notch. All three are quick, as well. It seems they've all struck that balance between a good haircut and a quick haircut, which I really appreciate. The Crowd: All shapes and sorts of dudes, but it would appear that most of them are Clintonville townees. I've noticed that quite a few of the patrons walk to the store, so it would seem that Longview draws a lot of people from the immediate area. You won't see as many kids here as your chain haircut place (ex: Great Clips), but I've encountered a surprising number of high school kids stopping in for a cut after school. It should be noted that the barbers are talkative and friendly. They have quite a rapport with each other, and I end up laughing at their stories each time I stop in. The Price: AMAZING. I get a QUICK, QUALITY haircut for only $12. That's a darn good price, in my humble opinion. Bottom Line: a nice store; nice, proficient barbers; a fun atmosphere; lot's of ESPN; great prices; a central location; what's there to complain about? Solid all-around! read more

Did any of you ever go to the real barber shops with the candy-striped spinning column up front way back when you were a kid? I did. My dad, ever-vigilant for a good deal, found a guy with a comb-over who charged us two bucks a head. Two bucks. You'd step in and, after poring through ancient magazines, clamber up the cushioned seat. The barber would drape a cloth over you and tuck in a paper towel on the back of your neck. You'd feel the warmth and soothing drone of the electric gadget along your ears and through your hair. It was all I could do not to fall asleep. As I got older, the two dollar haircut became less attractive. Sure, it was 2 bucks, but all you could pick from were short, medium, and long. The necessities of self-conscious adolescence brought demands greater than its $2 capabilities. This is where Longview thrives - the barbers are attentive, careful about their task, and very much up to different styles. Willing to take the extra step to make sure you step out knowing you don't need to add anything, even extra product or a further trim, they will put the mirror into your hand, knowing you might find something needing extra work. If you do, say it - and they will giveth. As in those days, pay in cash. A small trouble - I always think of it this way - if I make it easy for them to receive payment, I make it easy for me to receive a great haircut. Enjoy! read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS BARBER SHOP A soon as I walked in, I was subject to verbal abuse. They ridiculed my shoes and then stole them by force. Then they told me if I didn't stay and get a haircut, they would punch me in the eye. I had to wait for thirty years before I was finally seen by a barber, and then they ignored my haircut request and gave me an Ollie North while cursing my ancestors. Then they beat me with my own belt. What kind of barbershop does that? Also I think their official barber identifications on their mirrors are all forgeries. I cannot advise strongly enough to avoid this barbershop. There are many much more pleasant barbers in adjoining districts so please go there for your haircut needs. Just kidding, its cheap and the haircuts are great. Everyone is friendly and laid back, and they have a little sign that tells you which days are least busy. It is getting more popular and that leads to longer wait times, so you may need to budget a little extra time. They do have four barbers now though, so if you don't yet have a favorite one you can usually slip in a little faster. NO CREDIT CARDS, there is a 5/3 ATM at Kroger a few blocks north, but it charges $3 ... PARKING: There is a secret lot behind the store that you can get to if you are adventurous and have a narrow car. However, if its full, good luck backing out. You'll see what I mean. Otherwise, I haven't been towed yet from the Kroger at W N Broadway & High, but I always make sure to go in and buy a donut or something so I am technically a customer. read more

Reasons I go and keep going there: 1) Local business & Clintonvillies oldest business. 2) The most welcoming and relaxed environment I've ever been in 3) Great conversation 4) I wish every barber could cut my hair like they do. Although I haven't had my hair personally cut here, I used to go with my dad every time he got his hair cut and would sit in the chairs and listen to the barbers swap stories and laugh. This is one of those places that carries its own personality with it. This is a rare independently owned shop, and although it has only three chairs it has charm to go around. They're inexpensive and accommodating. I have gone in with clueless boyfriends to supervise decision making so he didn't get overexcited and ask for way too much to be cut off. I used to adore going because they had a box of toys to play with while dad got his hair cut and beard trimmed. Edit: After talking to my dad, he reminded me of a couple of things. Do not ask Anthony for a fade and/or scissor trim. I told him exactly what I was looking to get (fade, scissor trim), to keep it similar to how it was when I walked in, and be mindful of my receding hairline. I was honestly shocked at how back he messed it up when I got home, my brother took pictures of the back to show the staggeringly uneven fade. I ended up "scissor trimming" the rest of the top when I got home after having a closer look. This guy gave me the worst haircut I've ever had... And I was in the military! Go figure. My hairline was far worse, he left a long patch of hair in the front for me to "style" as he put it. Fade heinously uneven. I have a feeling Anthony doesn't cut a lot of hair in the "style" I was looking for. And I actually asked him if he was cool with what I requested. Never again. Absolutely excellent. The glowing reviews are no hyperbole. I signed up for Yelp just to give these guys a well-deserved 5 stars. The shop is almost 100 years old, but is clean and bright with a retro feel, just the right amount of kitsch. (The flat screens inside of old cabinet TVs are a great touch!) My barber explained that Longview is actually the oldest still-active barbershop in Columbus. In fact, it's been around longer than the governing body of barbershops in Columbus has been keeping records! I normally frequent another barber, but I was looking for something closer to the place where I'm house sitting. I immediately felt welcome here, everyone in the shop was chatting and laughing; talking about the news, sports, even comic books came up as a topic. I thought, this is what a barbershop should be. I had Nick cut my hair. He listened carefully to what I wanted, and I ended up with the best haircut I've had in a long time. My relationship with Longview Barbershop began around a half a year ago where after perusing yelp to find the best barber I stumbled upon this gem. I proceeded to receive one of the best haircuts of my life, the staff was friendly and talkative and had skills that could match Michelangelo (provided he had decided to cut hair instead of make sculptings, but I'm pretty sure the two skills are interchangeable). I returned to Longview several more times and continually received primo haircuts at bargain value, however, as a lazy college student I cheated on longview and went on two separate occasions to different barbershops that were closer to me in location. Both of these experiments ended in disappointment. So today I returned to Longview with my head down and tail between my legs begging for forgiveness, and forgiveness was granted. After receiving the 20 "punishment lashings" for committing barber infidelity Longview proved they still loved me by delivering another fantastic haircut. Sidenote: be leery of the guy offering free prostate exams in the men's room, his last examination was a bit rough and I'm beginning to believe he may not be licensed. read more

When the first place I went to closed, I looked around and tried a few other places around the OSU campus (as I was a student and wanted something close) but ended up liking Longview the best.
