Stopped in without an appointment while on weekend vacation to get a quick cut. Everyone was very friendly and they got me in the chair in no time. I was impressed by the personal small touches, like hot foam and a straight razor to clean up the edges! One of the hardest things to find when you move is someone that can learn to cut your hair the way you like, but I was able to find that in my first try. Mike was really friendly and he's super great at cutting hair. The wait was maybe 15 minutes at most and the atmosphere inside is great. Very much worth the drive. read more

OK. The reason I first went to Mikes Barber Shop was because I heard he does an excellent job trimming a beard. Right on with that, Mike does that......You guys with beards been trying to make an impression on a specific lady, my advice, go to Mike, he'll make your beard look better than you would have thought possible.......I have not had a guy cut my hair in over 40 years (sorry guys) I just felt women stylists on the Shoreline do such a great job on haircuts for guys. But after going to Mike, really because I heard he did such a great job trimming beards, I discovered Mike gives a hair cut as good as any of these stylish gals on the Shoreline. I've been going to Mike's Barbershop since it opened. It is a great place, right on Main Street. The walls are filled with sports memorabilia and wonderful barber shop items from the past (from his own family, I understand). Sometimes there's a wait which is a testament to the quality cuts and friendliness of the place. We now have 5 barber shops in Old Saybrook, but this is the quintessential barber shop. Nothing like keeping a great tradition alive! No gimmicks (like free beer), just a great haircut. read more

What really motivated me to write this review was that I stopped in tonight at 5:30 and Mike was still taking customers (they close at 6:00). Mike took his time and gave me an awesome hair cut. What a great place to get a haircut. I recently moved to the Old Lyme area and have been looking for a place to get my haircut and I luckily stumbled across Mike's Barbershop in Old Saybrook. I walked in and was greeted with a genuine BIG smile from both Mike and the other Hair Stylist who was on duty. I must say that I quite literally got one of the best haircuts of my life. The place feels like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. The barbers and the customers who were there immediately made me feel right at home. I recently went to Mike's in a time of crisis after receiving one of the Top 10 worst haircuts of my life at another barbershop (which will go unnamed). Mike fixed me up in no time at all and gave me an awesome fade. My favorite thing about Mike is that he's up with current hairstyles and will actually give you the cut you want. As a plus, Mike finishes the neckline off with hot lather and a straight razor, which is hard to find with most modern barbershops today. The inside of the shop is brand new and very welcoming. I highly recommend Mike's Barbershop to anyone that needs a cut and will definitely be a return customer. read more

Great shop clean comfortable and needed in Old Saybrook. Mike is a cool guy with a professional attitude. The down side to all of this 99% it is mostly just him. So to get a hair cut is worse than the DMV. No appointments long waits all the time. He generally has 9-10 people waiting on him at any given time. And since it's in Old Saybrook all the new trendy people want a flashy shop. Positive for Mikes business but extremely frustrating if you want a haircut in some sort of timely fashion. Keep up the good work Mike, but please consider appointments or hiring 5 more men to cut hair. Mike's talents are over shadowed by the excruciating wait to get a simple haircut. Other than all that. It's a beautiful clean shop with a nice atmosphere. Get there early and and be prepared to wait. Then be prepared to wait him to show up on time. Mike's Barbershop is the place to go for a hair cut and hot shave in Connecticut. It's very clear from the second you walk in that you've just stepped into a true barbershop. Mike always knows the questions to ask to give you exactly what you're looking for. After my first time going to Mike's I have not been to another barber shop, I even drive back from school in New York when I can just for a haircut. I have never been disappointed. There can be a bit of a wait sometimes but it is always worth is and never unbearable with ESPN on the big screen. It's usually busy and that is well earned because of the quality of the service. It's also the first time I've trusted someone to trim my beard. I recommend Mike's whenever I hear of someone looking for a haircut. It is not even more expensive than the chain hair cutting places which never end up being the way you want. If you're in the shoreline area and need a haircut there's no other option, if you're further it's well worth the trip and it's never a bad thing if you have to wait a little bit to get in the chair. read more
