After discovering that the breweries we wanted to visit while in Copenhagen were either closed, under construction, or in places that would have necessitated a car or more time than we cared to expend for a visit....we decided to visit some bars that focused on local beers. Mikkeller was on the top of my personal list. I know they make lots of sours, but buying their beer in the US can be very expensive and their offerings can be difficult to find. So going to a bar focused on their brews was a dream. The bar is cozy. Which is to say, very warm and crowded inside because it had been raining but people still want beer....but people weren't pushy, let those wanting to order get to the bar, and were polite when trying to get by. They have ok outdoor space as well. Stool up against the wall of the bar and tables set up in the street. Once the rain stopped, an employee came outside and quickly squeegeed them off! People quickly filled up the now usable seating! Mikkeller has great sours! And I was excited to try some! The bartenders were happy to let you sample something before getting a pour. Some only came in half-sized pours, and others you have the option for a full pour or a half pour. OPTIONS. I love options. And it means I can try more and different things without getting too drunk too early, or too poor in the process! My favorite of the ones I got to have on my visit was the SpontanYuzu. Nice and sour, tart and fruity but with a kind of tea-like something about it. Y'all...it was so damn good. They also had a cocktail on tap and some wine options. And while *I* was here for the sours, they have lots of other beer styles to choose from! All alcohol bases are covered. My visit here made me wish I had been staying closer to the area it was in. I would have returned several times during my visit! But it was a little out of my way, and I had so many other places I wanted to try! But if you like sour beers, or just trying new brews, this is a great place to do it! read more

I'm not a beer person but we had to go to a Mikkeller to experience the beer culture here in Copenhagen. I had the Raspberry cider which was really good and easy to drink. Watch for it, you might pass it by. It has green farm storm doors, kind of like at Dorothy's tornado cellar from Wizard of Oz. Its a tiny cellar style bar with in and outdoor seating areas. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the original Mikkeller Bar in Copenhagen! To be honest, we didn't know it was the original taproom before visiting; we were eager to visit simply for the name and clout. But our visit felt that much more special after realizing the history and significance of the space. The beers (alcoholic and NA) were all great and everything you'd expect from the Mikkeller name. We loved the space -- it's small and cozy and easy to miss if you don't realize it's there. The beertender on duty when we arrived was very friendly and accommodating; the one who took over while we were there not so much. She seemed cold and annoyed. I didn't get her name, which isn't helpful. But were it not for her this would easily be a 5-star review. Either way, still a very positive experience for this out-of-towner, and I'd highly recommend visiting Mikkeller Bar on Viktoriagade. read more

I apologize for my ignorance and oversight. While I had a great time at this bar and I like Mikkeller's beers in general, I cannot in good conscience go to any Mikkeller bar until I read reports that working environment have significantly improved. The review and rating will still remain because I don't want to discredit the bartenders who still need to make a living]. While everyone knows me nowadays as a wino, I still appreciate beer in that beer will be my go-to alcoholic beverage in countries that have a strong beer culture. In Copenhagen the beer culture can be summed up by two beer brands, each with a different philosophy. - Carlsberg, one of the Big 4 beer production companies. They revolutionized the beer production scene by 1) isolating and marketing the yeast that is specific to lager fermentation and 2) creation and standardization of the pH scale. In the case of beer brewing it is used to measure the acidity of the water (remember, water is normally neutral pH). - Mikkeller, one of the pioneers of the "contract brewing" concept - collaborate with other breweries to produce your beer. What started out as a passion project collaboration between a schoolteacher and his friend ended up becoming the face of the craft beer movement in Copenhagen. What catapulted Mikkeller to international fame was their Beer Geek Breakfast, which took top rating at ratebeer and currently has a 4+ average on beeradvocate. Eventually the original partner left to pursue other projects, the sole owner's passion now became his full time job and he finally had to create his own brewery (with the first one being in SD, CA, USA of all places for American-style IPAs). Although it is signature Mikkeller to collaborate with other businesses for food/beer pairings (Ramen to Biiru, Warpigs), there are only a few outposts of Mikkeller bars. The OG Mikkeller bar is this one located in Vesterbro. Vesterbro has had a bad rap in the past but now has evolved into one of the more hip neighborhoods of Copenhagen. Its close proximity to the train station (and additionally, my hotel) meant that this ended up being a perfect bar for a nightcap drink. I ended up liking it so much that I came back again on my last night in the city. The Danish ethos of "hygge" is in full force here - it's as hyggelig as it gets. Entrance is kinda tucked away somewhere between the train station and the Meatpacking District. From the down-to-earth staff to the patrons I talked to it was the perfect place to just wind down and relax over a glass of beer. Special mention to Hannah, Becs and Christian for being awesome. As a contrast I haven't seen an equivalent feeling in any beer bar back home - and this is considering SD is one of the craft beer meccas in the US! As a rule, 20 brews on tap. 19 are beer and there's always a non-beer option. There's always Mikkeller brews plus a few non-Mikkeller options. Beer styles are primarily IPAs, lambics/sours (focus on spontaneous fermentation) and porters/stouts. Two sizes available for most beers, the more rare options only have a small size. Here are the beers I had over the course of 2 days. Most important to note that a small 20cl glass is around ~30-35DKK/~$5USD and a standard beer pint is double that price. The first Mikkeller Bar I went to was in San Francisco, and I loved it so much that I made a point of going back, despite living in Los Angeles. I was thrilled when a location opened up in L.A., and it has fast become one of my favorite places for beer in my city. When my husband Matt B. and I found ourselves in Copenhagen last month, we decided to check out the original location in Vesterbro. It was a charming spot, much smaller than the ones in California--which makes sense, as Mikkeller Bar wasn't born an international beer sensation. There was outdoor patio seating that was full when we arrived on a sunny day at around six. We settled for a table inside the bar, which was stepped down a bit from the street in a way that must feel quite cozy on the cold, dark nights of Copenhagen's winter months. It was mostly empty on a bright, warm day, but still felt pleasant and comfortable, if a little bit dead. I enjoyed seeing the art on the walls, those instantly recognizable cartoony figures. Mikkeller seems to be important enough to this area that its art spilled over onto the rest of the street. There was one bartender working on this early Tuesday evening, and he was mildly helpful, if not the friendliest dude I've ever met. I asked about the tasters, and he informed me dismissively that they didn't do flights (I didn't ask!). After that, I decided not to bother him by asking too many questions about the beers, though he did point out his favorite of the twenty on tap--the Mikkeller Vesterbro Spontan, a sour. I got a taster of that, as well as the Mikkeller Ramen, a Belgian light ale, the Mikkeller K:rlek Vår/Sommar 2018, a hazy pale ale, and the Mikkeller Beergeek Brunch 2016, an imperial coffee stout. I sent Matt to order our second round, and he came back with full pours of the Mikkeller Vesterbro Wit and a Crooked Stave saison, an American beer. The beers were all excellent, and I enjoyed tasting a wide range of them. As far as atmosphere and service go, I actually prefer the California Mikkellers to the original. (The original location is also much more expensive, but that's just Copenhagen.) Still, I'm glad we dropped in while we were in the area. Beer geeks and Mikkeller Freaks congregate at this small basement bar to have fun and catch up. Very cozy and minimally decorated, Mikkeller fits the aesthetics of Danish design. The focus is on their multiple craft beers ranging from 5% to 18% alcohol (Big Worster, if you're curious) Being a novice beer drinker, I went with something that's a no brainer: the Beer Geek Bacon. Clocking in at 7.5%, this spiced stout served in a small wine glass was enough to keep me happily occupied for the next hour. My gf, who's a non-beer drinker, pointed out they also have a wine with cherry notes on the chalkboard. The boys tried the Mexas Ranger and the I hardcore you. Cute names can also help you pick out your drink if you're indecisive! Otherwise, ask the staff for recommendations. Nice beer bar close to our hotel. After learning that Denmark is a country known for its beers I searched for local pubs/bars I can visit to try some of the local beers. Found this place on yelp. Took my family here to try some beer before our cruise. Got here right when it opened around 12 noontime. Not much people when this opened up. Just a dude sitting drinking his beer. They have a nice large selection of beers on tap. Nice selection of IPAs as well. That was what I was looking forward in trying. They do have some fruity ones for those ladies. Based on my photos it would be number two and number 15 hazesan allihops and Mikkeller weird weather. Wife loved the weird weather and in-laws loved the hazesan. I had the green gold and stick in the ear. Both tasted great. Would frequent this place again if our stay here was longer. Cool dude that serves us beer nice and laid back. My favorite beer joint in Copenhagen. Here you understand why the entire population drinks lots of ale and beer because it is, in one word.......delicious. For the first time, I've appreciated beer/ale with food. But wait there are hundreds of beer to try here. The most delicious to me were ones on tap, the ales, any of them I tried 4. For a long time the Danes (I read somewhere) drank beer/ale because of its polluted waters. Now that the water is clean, ale/beer is still very popular. Right on Danmark! While walking to the Mikkeller Bar from the central station, I wondered...is Copenhagen home to the original hipsters? A quick Google search indicated that the original hipsters were actually from New York, but Thrillist did list this neighborhood in the "Top 10 Hipster Neighborhoods". The Mikkeller Bar definitely suits the neighborhood. They have 20 beers on tap, mostly their own, and a few other great beers from around the world. The diversity of beers was pretty impressive, they had a few sours, some stouts, and several IPAs. In US terms, the beers were averaging about $12/pint, so I didn't get to try as many as I would have liked. If you want to try more than a couple of beers, I recommend doing their half-pour option (20 cl). The beers themselves were good, but not as good as some of the stuff coming out of California, Colorado and Oregon. They are opening a brewery in San Diego, and I'm excited to see what they produce at that location. It will be a welcomed addition to the San Diego scene. This is an important stop for beer geeks visiting Copenhagen, they even have a welcome sign for them on the door. I'm not a big beer drinker but I know that being in Copenhagen, my BF was really looking forward to some quality beers. I surprised him by taking him here post dinner one night and conveniently it was located near our hotel. What a gem! I'm pretty picky with my 5 stars ratings so you know this place is pretty spectacular. It's small, cozy, warm, friendly. They had 20 beers on tap and offered a small food/snacks menu that we didn't look at since we were there just for a drink. BF was excited to find the Founders KBS and ordered it right away, it was smooth, dark and very tasty. I ordered an Evil Twin Imperial Biscotti Break Stout and it was one of my favorite beers I have tried to date! It was sweet, creamy and embodied a tasty coffee aroma. Love love love! I loved the decor of this place as well. They had small tables made from vintage dressers and it's very quirky. Mikkeller is becoming a multi-national brand, but this here is where the magic started, in the heart of Copenhagen. Having tried a few of their stouts at their location in New York, I wasn't blown away. That was on me for making bad decisions drinking heavy stouts in the dead of summer, but all is different now that I've been here. They make some outstanding beers. It's a tiny space that's usually quite busy. Finding a space at the bar might not end well, but on my trip, we encountered perfect timing of walking in just as another couple was leaving. Bellied up to the bar, we were able to try several different varietals, ask questions, and take in the warmth of this perfect beer bar that's an intersection of on-site brewery and quaint neighborhood hang. All too often beer halls are large and impersonal. Not here. We had a few beers inside, then decided to take a couple bottles to go. If you're unaccustomed to this practice, take heed that there's a large fee levied upon anyone taking beer to go, so don't be surprised if it costs 40 DKK for two beers. read more

It all starts here for beer geeks visiting Copenhagen. Maybe it all starts here for beer geeks within hundreds of kilometers of this place. It's absolutely unbelievable. Drawbacks: Small, crowded, expensive, gets hot and muggy even in the winter. None of this matters. It's amazing. If you like beer, you have to come. It's a below-sidewalk bar, with little staircases leading to either of two doors. There are narrow rooms on either side of the bar. There are a few tables and chairs scattered around, some stools at the bar, and a bit of bench seating. The scene is bustling here, probably all the time, but especially as the evening goes on. It gets packed to the point of being cramped, and you have people piling past you or over you quite a bit. The staff is friendly and laid back. They have some wonderful cheeses, mustards, sausages, and pickles available for snacks. The crowd is a mix of beer tourists, local beer lovers, and average (i.e., non-beergeek) folks who know a good thing when they see it. You might have to forgive the occasional loudmouth American know-it-all at the bar (I swear that wasn't us...they were behind us) and dorky Americans making penis jokes at the bar (OK...that was us. Sorry.). The tap list churns through 20 different selections constantly, with about half Mikkeller and half collaboration or guest taps. All great stuff, some of it hugely high in alcohol, some more sessionable. Much of it very highly specialized, if not very hard to get. The cellar book is extensive, and organized by style. Hundreds of unbelievable bottles, ranging from under $10 to several hundred per bottle. You could spend a week here with friends and not even make a dent in the amazing stuff, let alone the whole book. Unreal. One of the best nights of beer drinking in my entire life. read more

Back home I had been at a beer dinner between Atelier Crenn in SF with the Trappist in Oakland. Little did I know the Mikkeller I tasted was going to be in the city that I was going to. The beer was great then and it's just as good in person. The minute I walked in I was in awe of the different stout choices and friendly bartender who was wearing a Tool shirt. I asked for some Tool on the speakers and ended up getting a full hours worth. Awesome. The stout was equally awesome, especially paired with the various sausages from Slagteren Ved Kultorvet. Since Mikkeller has a decent amount of distribution in the US im definitely going to be getting more of it now. read more

I don't like beer....not at all, but i'm married to someone who does so on our trip to Copenhagen Mikkeller Bar was one of first calls. Situated in a basement (as many bars are in copenhagen) you enter down a few very steep steps. The bar seats around 30 people with a few stood around the bar too. A nice setting with a pleasant atmosphere, it was a real pleasure to spend a few hours in there. Obviously for the beer drinkers there is a vast choice of fantastic beers....and for the non beer drinkers.....there is cherry wine!! at around £7 for a small glass it is very expensive, but its thick and warming like a dessert wine so is made to be sipped and savoured. At 17% its also a slow drinker for that reason. Lets just say i had a lovely time and came out feeling all warm and fuzzy (bring on the cherry wine!) read more

This place is so cozy and has a bunch of unique beers on tap. It's located down a short set of stairs in a basement-like area, but there is a small bar and a good amount of seating inside with lots of warm lighting. If it's nice weather, there's also a bunch of picnic tables and benches outside that you are more than welcome to bring your glassware out to. The bartenders are friendly and helpful and able to give good recommendations. While we were there, we splurged on some of the higher gravity, barrel aged beers, but they were well worth it. Mikkeller has a few exports, and funny enough we couldn't find our favourite American Dream (sold as draught in Sweden) here. More like a wine bar than a beer bar, but still a must visit if you in any way like beer and perhaps even if you don't. While many will go to Carlsberg, people in the know will visit this bar of the lesser known but brilliant craft beer brewer. In a very minimalist fashion there is not much there, bar ten taps and a chalkboard. It is very small, lacks atmosphere and it is quite expensive, but it is still a pilgrimage worth making. Craft beer lovers, listen up! This needs to be on your radar. After walking left from Copenhagen train station we started to see a lot more takeaways and even a sex shop and at first was unsure we were going the right way, however hidden away on the pavement level (A lot of Denmark goes underground) was Mikkeller Bar. Styled in the classic industrial style yet with a very light and airy feel this bar isn't the biggest but allows a group of four to find a table OK. We were there on a Friday around 4 and witnessed the place go from quiet to incredibly busy, people were even sitting outside in the rain just to site and have a beer!? They really are worth it. I had two beers here, a BrewDog Mikkeller collab as well as a Mikkeller own. Both were so tasty and in the style of many small craft beers, packing with flavour and individualism. Don't believe me? If I have to drink beer, their beer are the ones I could drink. Of course it's pricey, but that's where the quality is. I love their stout but I also love the other kind of beer as long as it's not *JUST* a pilsner. I guess that sums my whole problem with beer here in Denmark - I need something else than the ordinary yellow one, and Mikeller has answer for that. Consider it gourmet beer if you like, with gourmet price too. It's definitely not a place where you get drunk and trip on your heel if you like, or you just have to have a really deep pocket if that's your intention. Bartenders are really sweet and will recommend you what you will like, although most of the things come in small glass with big glass price. However, I gave it one star less than the perfect five due to its small place. This place is usually crowded in the edge of bursting that it's really hard to have a cozy night in here (someone told me the one in Nørrebro is better and I'm ashamed to say I have never been to the other one). I did once visit Mikeller when there was hardly people in it (it was during Christmas holidays when most of Copenhageners were back *home* in Jutland) and it was very nice.
