I wasn't blown away by Shiraaz, but it's not a bad place to go. The atmosphere is nice, the decor…read moreis classy, and the restaurant feels rather elegant and high-end, even though the prices aren't.
The food, unfortunately, was a bit average. They have a vegetarian section on their menu, but it's heavy on the cream and ghee, so if you're vegan, your only option is the tadka dahl (with yellow lentils/split peas). The waiter did kind of hesitate and suggest they COULD try to make something else dairy-free...but it seemed like it would be an effort for them so I went with the tadka dahl.
While it was nice, I found it a bit bland -- I like exquisite flavours with my Indian food, cuz I like to feel like I'm on an exotic trip somewhere and not sitting in the middle of Melbourne CBD after a long day at work, yo -- but this just tasted like watered-down Indian food intended to appease a Western palate. My boyfriend had the vegetable jalfrezi and loved it, though, so maybe it's just my dish that was a bit disappointing.
We also ordered two roti, one without butter and one with. The one without butter came out pretty burned and not very palatable. Bit rich for $3.50 a pop, especially since they were quite small in size anyway.
On the plus side, we did get pappadoms for free, and they came with two types of dips (mint yoghurt and tamarind chutney) -- I couldn't eat the mint one (dairy) but the tamarind one was quite nice. (It was sweet so if you're vegan just double-check they used sugar instead of honey -- I didn't think about it until afterward.)
For the classy atmosphere (a la white tablecloths, wine glasses, and subdued tasteful decor), the prices are certainly good. With our pappadoms, two mains, a shared bowl of rice, and two roti, it came to less than $45, and we were super-full. They have an even cheaper lunch deal -- two-dish thali for $14.50, and even cheaper if you take it away. Aside from the burned roti costing us an extra $3.50, I think this place is good value for money.
Service was excellent. All three people who helped us (the guy who seated us, the women who was our actual server, and the guy who rang us up at the end) were all super-smiley and friendly and patient with our questions. I read some reviews about bad service for this place before -- that person must no longer be there (or it just wasn't their shift) because we thought the service was exceptional.
All in all, I'd say this place is nice if you're in the mood to feel like you're at a more expensive place but not pay the more expensive prices. It's probably also not the best restaurant for vegans. Hopefully in the future they can try to make some of their vegetarian dishes less dairy-dependent and offer clearly-marked vegan options.
