Pooh, Marie (Pooh's sister), Pooh's father and I came here for supper, last night…read more The ambiance was busy and noisy. Maybe it was just that night but I wouldn't go back for a romantic dinner. We started with drinks. Pooh's dad (Andre) and I had Bloody Caesars, Pooh had a beer and Marie a house cocktail. The cocktail was too floral. Our Caesars were great. For appetizers Marie and Pooh had mussels, Andre, a Caesar salad and I had the French Onion soup. Andre's salad was a good size; Pooh and Marie enjoyed their mussels and my soup was very tasty Before the appetizers arrived a panier of warm bread and buns with a delicious olive oil and parmesan cheese sauce was brought to the table We ordered the Table D'hôte. Marie, Pooh and Andre had the fillet mignon and I had the bavette (flank steak). The cook on the steaks varied. Pooh and I ordered medium-rare; Marie ordered medium and Andre ordered medium-well. Pooh's steak was medium and my steak was medium-rare at the thinner end and very rare (almost blue) at the thicker end. Pooh, Marie and Andre had a baked potato without any butter and I had french fries. We shared two bottles of Italian red wine which was an excellent choice for the steaks. For dessert we had the brownie with ice cream. The brownie was dry - we needed the ice cream to help get it down. Pooh, Andre and I had a Brazilian coffee to wash everything down. Marie was driving. The service was excellent. Our server Édouard was very attentive; always checking on us. He was pleasant and had a friendly smile. Our glasses of water were always filled without us asking. The bathroom was unisex.

Although the menu was dated as was its execution and that the restaurant lacked finesse - I resisted the urge to go into the kitchen to show them how to do a tomato sauce and baked beans for a hearty and delicious breakfast - no one can claim that the quality of service is anything less than excellent, as is the rest of the hotel service. To prevent me from having to climb a slope with my cane, the hotel manager gave us a more spacious cabin and more beautiful even without altering the agreement. In addition , the 80s retro decor was unimportant when we consider the impeccable cleanliness - no dust or stain anywhere - without forgetting the windowed wall in the cottage which had a gorgeous view of the lake and lying sun while sitting by the fire hearth . It should be mentioned the canary calm and quiet at this resort, we were so relaxed we thought we were getting ill. For the value versus expense, even with the kitchen being a bit outdated, the customer is the winner. I would recommend the place without hesitation.

Pics and reviews looked great, so we made plans to dine here during our penultimate night in the city. Barroco is located in Old Montreal, right on Rue Saint-Paul. The exterior has really charming curb appeal, and upon entry we were greeted by the same. This isn't a large restaurant, arranged with tables and a few booths throughout the space and a bar on the back wall that serves as a focal point. The vibes were on - the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a mix of old-fashioned fixtures, stone walls, and earth tones. The restaurant was quite lively - the vibes were on. Their drink menu is quite creative; we actually started our evening at the bar while we were waiting for our table and the bartender made some great suggestions - both cocktails I had were really good. The food menu is mostly French inspired; it wasn't extensive but they had a good variety of creative dishes. We decided on two starters - the brioche and the octopus salad. The brioche was fine, it came as one roll with a side of seasoned butter. It was a little on the dry side, and the butter wasn't very flavorful. The octopus salad was much better; the octopus was sliced and arranged on top of a ratatouille which provided a good complement of flavors and textures. For my main I got the OG braised beef. The beef was almost pot-roast style, seasoned with maple and aged balsamic sauce and paired with truffled celery root purée. This was delicious - the beef was super tender, and the sauce provided great flavor. The puree was an awesome side - the entire trip was super comforting and familiar while also being new and interesting. We decided to get two desserts - the madeleines and the olive oil cake. The former were baked fresh and came with a side of chocolate pudding and salted caramel, while the latter came with whipped cream and coached pears. Both were good, but I preferred the madeleines; the warm sponge paired with the chocolate and caramel was a great finisher to the meal. Service was great - everyone from the host to the bartender to our waiter made us feel welcome; they definitely elevated the experience. Overall, I had a great time at Barroco; the food, vibes, and service were all on point. I would definitely consider returning the next time I'm in Montreal.

My only regret is not finding it earlier in our Montréal adventure. Honestly, I'd plan another trip just to come back to Barroco. The vibe is cozy, charming, and delightfully quaint. The drink menu is funky, original, and flat-out fun. The music is spot-on--enough to make you want to dance in your seat without drowning out conversation. The food looked incredible too, but sadly we'd already eaten and were leaving the next morning. Bottom line: don't skip this gem while you're in Montréal--or you'll be kicking yourself all the way home. Pass on the tourist traps--this is the Montréal memory you actually want.
