A part of Nantucket that unfortunately most visitors never get to see. Located about 6 miles east of Nantucket Town the bogs are "owned" by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. The main parking area is located on Milestone Rd but there are entry points off of Polis Rd if you know where to look. The bogs are just that, cranberry bogs with miles of dirt roads or more properly paths. You definitely need a good dirt bike because the sand gets deep in place and the paths have many nasty ruts. Not exactly single track but it does get challenging in places. There are crude maps of the area but I end up getting lost just about every time I venture into the area but that's half the fun. I never know where I am going to end up. No motorize vehicles are allowed and even in the busy summer months you can ride for hours without seeing another person. However birds such as hawks and small animals are numerous in the bogs. Altar Rock, the highest point on the island can be reach through the paths and quiet and solitude is always in abundance. The bogs are also nice for hiking but remember to bring water with you because you probably will get lost. But that's all right because getting lost in here , and spending more time than you planned is definitely not a bad thing.
