First I was thrilled, then I was disappointed. I'd visited this gallery for several years as part…read moreof my trips to the the Columbia Gorge and was saddened to see that it closed back in 2011. The thrilled part came in when I was strolling through the Historic Troutdale District and started practically tripping over his life size wildlife statues. But, it wasn't random. Turns out the gallery relocated just a few blocks from the original location, so you can still see his fine work. The disappointment part is that the current gallery space, which the staff calls transitional, just doesn't showcase his grand work to the same degree. The gallery is probably 1/8th of the former size and can't accommodate some of the larger pieces. Half of the space is the artist's studio where he both creates his statues and offers classes to the public. The gallery contains just a small portion of his work and also houses exhibits by other artists in various mediums (sculpture, photography). Caswell's current subject matter, based on a series of special commissions, is also overtly religious. Not everyone's cup of tea or chalise of wine. While I will still visit the gallery when I'm in Troutdale, it won't be as frequent and no longer merits a special trip. The Columbia Gorge itself is the real wow factor.

Great place to taste some wine and check out some amazing art. Everyone is extremely friendly and welcoming. The art ranges from Rip's spectacular bronze sculptures to Ali's beautiful one-of-a-kind jewelry to various photographs, paintings, bells and glasswork. There were several people there when we arrived, looking through the artwork and yet it didn't feel claustrophobic, yay! I also have a bit of a thing for quality customer service. I do not care for pushy, but I also do not want to feel I am some sort of an imposition by being there. Especially when you are talking about something as personal as artwork, and again when there are several potential clients who wandered in at the same time, that can be a tough situation to manage. The gals at The Attic handled it beautifully. I felt seen and acknowledged from the moment we walked in. Yes, I had to wait my turn, fine. When it was my turn, they could not have been more attentive, informative and appreciative. I ended up not purchasing either of the pieces by Earl Hamilton that I had found on- line. Instead, I purchased a completely different one by him that I absolutely love! PDX Contemporary Art is doing that. This gallery specializes in quiet minimal work from Portland artists, American artists, and international artists. The work runs from maybe $300 into five figures. They signed them and promoted them before they showed in New York. They understand that artist and gallery careers are made outside Portland. They are the only Portland gallery that consistently brings work to art fairs where whale collectors and museum curators gather, like Art Basil Miami. They sell Portland artists there and through extensive collector relationships worldwide. If you are a collector, this is a good spot. It's always free to look, an essential part of developing your personal taste in art. The staff is chill, knowledgeable and helpful, Northwest -style, no haughty Chelsea little black dress syndrome. The gallery takes its work seriously, they invest in their artists and the work of their artists is a good investment, as well as being beautiful.

This was another random stop on my Friday of art stops in the Pearl. Modern art. Minimalism and…read moreabstract. PDX had a small showing going on for seven artists. Very modern work similar to Rothko on one of the artists. Two others were more in the graphic design area (at least that's the way I interpreted the work. Some were a bit more literal, like a series of small paintings of flowers. The space itself is not that large so there really isn't a lot of time you can spend in here. Right next door was a place called Uproar which I though was just part of PDX, not sure but they had some instillation pieces and sculpture work by one artist. A nice little place, I look forward to seeing more work there.

Aurora Gallery has framed several pieces for me over the years. They have a large (in some ways…read moreoverwhelmingly large) selection of frames in a variety of good-quality materials. They also have a nice selection of matte choices, should your work require it, and different types of glass, from common window glass to anti-UV, anti-reflective glass for maximum preservation and visibility. The staff are consistently friendly, helpful, and professional. They even throw in free picture hooks so you needn't rummage around or make a trip to the hardware store when you get your artwork home, which is a nice touch. Prices are not cheap, but then even cheap, junky frames are expensive and difficult to find nowadays, and the workmanship by Aurora is very good, and justifies the cost. They have also proven adept at framing some oddball pieces for me that are not normally considered "art," so don't be afraid to challenge them!

Soft lighting highlights the fine details of beautifully crafted tables, plush sofas, and intricate decor. - Aesthetic Appeal: The ambiance is inviting and serene, with well-thought-out displays that make you imagine how the furniture would look in your home. - Indifferent Staff: Salespeople are present, but they seem preoccupied. They were quietly chatting among themselves, paying little attention to customers. The contrast of Beautiful vs. Unwelcoming was striking. The juxtaposition of the store's luxurious, inviting decor with the indifferent, almost cold demeanor of the staff creates an unsettling contrast. Weird vibe here. I left without making a purchase. I do want to point out that the City Home store on 1101 SE 3rd Ave. inPortland doesn't share this vibe. I'll just go there next time.
