I brought my daughter here for an audition for a children's apparel brand. She's in a stroller so we had to enter through the loading dock which is adjacent to the front entrance. The front entrance only has stairs and luckily another mother spotted me and gave me the tip. The building is nice and it looks like every floor has a little cafe where you can purchase beverages and light snacks. The staff that worked with us was great. Everything was well-organized so even though there were easily over 200 kids, it didn't feel that way. They had diaper changing stations in the model holding areas which made life hella easy. This was a first time experience for us and I hope to have an opportunity to come out again. read more

Kudos to Hulu and Milk Studios for allowing me the Seinfeld experience. As a kick off for Seinfeld becoming available on Hulu, Milk Studios had an exhibit of Jerry's apartment back in June. The long wait in the heat was well worth the experience, I got to see everything from the booth at Monks to Fussili Jerry. The staff was extremely courteous and moved the extremely long líne in an orderly manner. Hopefully, I get a chance to attend events here in the future. read more

I came here for a few events and the majority of the time it was running like a well-oiled machine. They have a coat check available along with keep track of the number of people so the event isn't overly crowded. The event space is spacious and opens space. I have seen in transformed its variety of things including a bar, an indoor swing, and even a cute lounge. read more

The current installation there is the "How Fashion Travels" event put on by Lexus and Interview Magazine. As you enter the space you get a ticket to use to redeem for a choice of drink including a mint matcha drink, la Columbe cold brew, and Spindrift seltzers. You can go directly to the photoshoot or have your makeup, hair and nails done before. There are some couches to hangout on and Interview magazines to read while waiting for your turn. After striking a few poses the pictures get sent to you digitally and you can choose one to print there. It's running for one more day (9/9) from 11am-6pm, but be sure to go early as all the slots were booked nearly an hour before closing. read more

This is an awesome venue to attend any function. I have gone to many events here some of all scales big and small. There is a second floor also that is way more spread out for the party scene and that is a rare kind of thing when you are up there. I was even here last night for the Bart Ginn Retrospective and since it was the first preview of the exhibit it was open access when you are on the list and many other cools stuff like sometimes free posters for the groups of people. Of course during Fashion Week here in NYC, this is like home base for all the cool activities. I always feel like there is a great vibe in the air here and a friendly group of people so far. I look forward to coming back. Actually, love to come to this spot but the area of Meatpacking District not always thrilled to go to. read more

I came here to view the Vision and Art of Shinjo Ito exhibit. It was very intriguing. Admission is free and the exhibit is small although there is a video monitor of the artist's life and work through the years. The space is small but decent for an art gallery venue. It's opposite the Chelsea Market where patrons afterwards can have lunch. To my dismal there is no guided tour of the staff explaining about the exhibits, thus the four stars. read more

I attended the Vulture Festival last year at Milk Studios. I came to see the talk with Ava Duvernay and the cast of Queen Sugar. The talk was very entertaining. The process to get in could've been better. Even though I got a good seat I was there early so I was one of the first in line. However once they load you into the elevator the people in front are herded to the back and those people who came later get off the elevator first and therefore into the room first which sucks. read more

Some people crash weddings. I crash gallery openings. I remember walking through Chelsea and seeing a crowd outside of Milk Gallery. It seemed more casual than people in line for an exclusive soiree. Cigarettes and chatter, that's all it was. Inside it was packed and the doors were wide open. I grabbed my friend and said, "Wanna check it out?" We walked right in as if we belonged there. As much as I could pretend I belonged at that opening, I didn't. I didn't have chains hanging from my pants. I wasn't wearing a cool hat tipped to the side. I didn't have my fishnets on underneath my shorts. Nor was I in my purple plaid shirt. I didn't have a boyfriend with rockin facial hair or piercings on his eyebrows. My friend and I were kind of nondescript. We weaved through the party walking by each and every one of Kenneth Cappello's larger than life photographs. We were in skater glory and eavesdropping on his youth. I felt young in this New York subgenre. I have a long way to go before I can say I've perfected the art form of party crashing. Kenneth Cappello's pictures were awesome. They were nostalgic and in motion. I'd just much rather enjoy and study them with a little more breathing room. Milk Gallery is pretty vast and bland. It's a blank canvas, a porcelain bowl, milk and Cheerios. It felt like the bowl was filled to the brim and my friend and I were stray Lucky Charms. I'd be interested to see other exhibits during daytime hours. Will it be more Pollock or varied in course? I'd like to find out. I think the possibilities are endless. So surprise me and woo me back Milk. read more

I've worked here a lot and they are cool. Service at the bar is great. Sometimes the guys behind the equipment can be a little snooty, but they are no where near as bad as some of the guys at Pier 59 Studios. Studio space is great and yes, they do throw great parties with some of the "fashion and celebrity" elite. Mainly though, its a cool place to chill and relax while working. I'd prefer not to have the aggravation of celebrities. read more

Where has this place been all my life? I honestly didn't think I was gonna get into the event when I walked up in my jeans and sneakers and the girls in front of me were all in tight one piece dresses with heels and clutches. I thought I was gonna have to really go into dirty artist mode and pretend to be fashionably under-dressed. Fortunately I heard the sweetest words ever from the man working the door: "Miss you can't get in just because you're wearing a skirt, you need to RSVP." When I got inside, I realized this event had the full spectrum of dress from a classy 10 to a trashy 1. I fit in comfortably at around a 3. Although I really think the fact that I had the wherewithal to flick the spaghetti sauce off my shirt earlier in the day could've brought me up to a 4, I didn't really bother to wipe the remainder of it off. Once inside, I didn't have a problem getting drinks at all. Guys were just pouring drinks into cups and putting them on the table for anyone to take. After being at the worst launch event I've ever had the misfortune of attending for Widow Jane whiskey where I literally got half of one shot, I was parched. The drinks here felt like a big dose of oxygen after holding my breath for 3 minutes. Also, when it's opening night for an art exhibit, girls are dressed in their nicest, shortest skirts, with full make up and heels. It's like the exact opposite of the DMV in here. I could've and should've spent all night here but my friend who had been drinking for the past 5 and a half hours would not shut up about how hungry he was and how he hadn't eaten for 12 hours and blah blah blah. Instead of trying to make up facts about how the human body can do without food for 10 days (I dunno if that's true) we rounded up the gang to hit up taco truck on 14th. From there the night headed completely downhill cuz I ordered the wrong thing, got overcharged, really had to pee, almost killed someone and then ended up at a bar way downtown, not only without an open bar but with $10 beers. If there's a lesson in all of this, never leave Milk Studios. read more

This is a great art gallery right next to the Highline Park. They have regular exhibitions and you can check out photography stuff etc. What I really like though is they have big gala events a few times a year, and tonight was one of those. That means complimentary beer & wine, catered food, and open to all, so you get a lot of hipsters, artists, photographers, buyers, scenesters, weirdos and fashionistas alike. It's a real carnival of characters! Actually now that I think about it, last year there was a really big party here and I came in sorta late. I guess that makes me fashionably late. Anyway, turns out M.I.A. was playing a secret show, and it was off the hook. Somehow I jumped the line and was able to get there up in front. Needless to say I'm devoted to parties here. read more

Albeit in the middle of nowhere, GREAT SPACE! Went to the http://www.shinjoito.com exhibit of buddhist sculptures, etc. There was this 16ft "Great Parnirvana" sculpture by Shinjo Ito, depicting Buddha laying on its side on his deathbed. Ito used to carve busts and sculpt the close and the deceased as a way to pay homage to them. I love MIlk! Working in the fashion industry I am here all the time. For photo shoots it rocks - definitely the best in NY. It isn't uncommon to walk into the lobby and see Doutzen or Candice Swanepoel. Gotta love that. I honestly can't say enough about the staff - so so so great. I recently had the pleasure of installing a show for my boss here in December. Oh how I love working with Song. She made the whole experience so great. The space is beautiful and shows always full of wonderful photographers. If you have the opportunity to go to a show here don't miss it! xx read more

I have gone to many events at Milk Studios over the years and every single time, have found them to be absolutely incredible, especially considering the amount of people that traffic in and out, for the opening of their exhibitions. Not only are they all very well put together and each unique in their own way but they also seem to draw a very attractive and friendly crowd. Literally the last time I went, a friend told me that it is his favorite art gallery because it's where the most beautiful people in the city come to look at art. I have to say, this is also my favorite art gallery but for different reasons. First, let's cut to the chase by saying that every single opening of a new exhibition at Milk, has a bunch of open bars serving up alcohol. Nothing like drinking for free when it comes to art. I say that the exhibits are unique, not just because the art is always different, from different artists but also because the overall setup completely changes each time, so you never really know what to expect, or even where the walls that the art is posted onto, will be located. The bathrooms are also just as pretty as the art itself, plus they have a great coat check. I love this place and if you are interested in art, alcohol, or just plain old adventures, you will probably love it too! read more

i stopped in here because a friend was shooting here as a job. im actually kind of glad i found them on yelp because these people are so stuck up and awesome in that way. i come up and they ask me who i was looking for. i say my friends name and they didnt have it since he was assisting not the main photographer. i figure out the room and they direct me to go "straight and to the right" i walk straight and to the right and literally walk into a wall. i did notice that i walked past a dude that was looking at me like where the heck are you going. i turned around and noticed him and the receptionist. him pointing at me. her making a gesture, flinging her arms above her head like i was crazy. yes crazy because your directions were crap. hey if you cant be friendly why dont you find another job other than being a receptionist and greeting people? read more

First, the reviews for Milk Studios should be placed into 2 categories. One as a photo studio and two as an event space. Prospective clients should take note. I have used Milk for its photo studio a handful of times. I really went back and forth between 2 and 3 stars, but settled on 2 for a few reasons. 1. Some of the studios are beautiful and top notch. A couple are not and are still expensive. 4 stars. 2. Staff is mixed. Overall, they are kind of arrogant. Not everyone, but then I think no one should be. Especially not a receptionists that acts like a hostess of a fancy club. I get it, famous people come in there. But this is New York, no one f-ing cares. I paid $4000, now be polite to my staff. 1 star. 3. It is very pricey and then has hidden add ons. I think it is ridiculous to charge $2500 plus for space and then hit you with lots of hidden fees. Not all studios do that. 1 star. 4. Rental department is sup par. It is expensive, even compared to high end rental places, so you expect a high level of service. However, I have had mixed results with their knowledge. Specifically, I rented a power pack I had never used before, but was their number one recommendation. However, no one there knew what settings were optimum for a fast flash duration. I was swamped with the client and kind of thought they would at least try and look up the info. Nothing. Charge me hundreds of dollars and give me a "dunno" answer. 2 stars. read more

Gallery/studio space/event location, Milk Studios hosts some of the best events around. The most memorable would have to be an after party for the MTV VMA's thrown by The Fader magazine. A trip up the industrial lift opened to a fantastic open space with stages, bars, lounge areas and photo booth. Free live shows by the Strokes and Mos Def's rock outfit among others...usually at the events here you can rub elbows and get trashed with many of your favourite artists. It's a good time all around. I really enjoyed volunteering for them because it was a really great experience, but naturally, there were many ups and downs. 1. as a volunteer they didnt really ensure a time to feed the helpers (aka working 13 hours with one meal of 1 slice of pizza doesnt cut it) 2. you really learn a lot about the event world and management and set up 3. felt really appreciated by some 4. and extremely underappreciated by others. to be honest, the reason why I gave them a 3 is because ONE single girl treated me (a VOLUNTEER not INTERN--although there should be NO difference as we are not getting paid) like complete shit. I'm telling you, she yelled at me for not doing putting away used cups at an event which a. i was coming back FROM putting cups away and b. some people were still drinking from them. she then proceeded to make me mop and clean the floor after she said "i'm sorry but someone has to do it even us" so she handed me paper towels and walked away. and lastly she handed me all sorts of trash like I was her personal guinea pig. Now I'll tell you, the studio is nice, the event organizers are very unorganized. The experience was great, and you could tell that your presence was a really big help to them and they depend on you. But many of the employees took advantage of the volunteers and treated us like crap--making me hesitant to ever come back. read more

Usually I save this effort for my blogging duties, which I still may do -- stay tuned, but Yelp is perfect for rating establishments based on many facets of whether why not or in this case, WHY BOTHER...SMH. The exhibit itself is laid out well, as well as its subject matter tonight being: "Walls of Sound" by photographer, Danny Clinch. Brilliant photos, decent exhibit but, HORRIBLE STAFF. It's already cold, rainy n' dreary outside. Who wants to make a trek outdoors -- on the westside to boot, n' have to deal with coldness indoors? So it goes a lil' somethin' like this, hit it! There's a security guard verbally attacking me while snapping a pic (when taking pics are totally allowed), going: "U had all the time in the exhibit n' U wait for the end to snap a pic!??? Hurry up and take your pic, we're trying to close!" Meanwhile, they're about 100 other people getting their coats, some exiting, some still sipping on drinks, some still mingling, some still walking around n' ALSO snapping pics of themselves, etc. 1. Did he monitor or racially profile me during the course of the entire exhibit, to see if when I entered? 2. Did he even ask me how much time I had to even view the entire exhibit, or be professional enough to first inform me of his duties, before making an assumption? HELLO, I went to see the sorry ass Knicks get their butts kicked by the sorry ass Kings @MSG, and got to the exhibit late trying to get thru the shitty weather all the way on the westside @9:40p. So unfortunately I didn't get to schmooze like every other Mr. Hall!!! And as far as I'm concerned, there were PLENTY others coming in when I entered, but betcha he never approached them w/such hostility!? But how would he know that? He never asked, then begins to argue, (imagine, argue w/a guest) telling me: "I don't think taking the pic is important to you, or else U wouldn't bother arguing w/me n' would just snap the pic already!" Not only was I disrespected, but now I'm starting to look around n' seeing plenty others snapping pics, still perched mingling finishing their drinks, n' not once did Mr. Hall seem to care. I was his prize tonight. Mind U, Mr. Hall is black, and so am I. Was I bothering anyone? NO! Based on my intelligent push back to rightfully n' eloquently (no cussing, no unnecessary emotion/anger) to put him in his place , he literally steps back one foot n' says, "OK I apologize sir, please take your pic, we're closing soon." I smile, actually say 'thank you' and snap my one pic. I kinda thought, this is gonna be one of those brother-to-brother moments, where we give a pound, we crack a joke n' kinda vibe where he even says somethin' like, "hey man, it was a rough night, my bad etc etc..." But his tone became frustrated seeing my smile, beginning to then say, "you're satisfied now?!" I leave immediately asking for his name, so he gives me his name, spelling out: "Mr H.A.L.L." and I start to leave, quickly, knowing this ain't the cool brother, this is the sadly, unintelligent 'I work for someone else BOUNCER-type' brother. Gathering my gloves and coat, a tall gal approaches me a few minutes after. U know, the ones who get a 2-by-4 gallery events manager job n' think they're now part of the NY art scene, but somehow their ego is on the same level as Madonna? Yep, that *bleep*-head type, saying: "I'm so n' so, I'm dis I'm dat" but girl as fas I'm concerned you're "whi-whicki-whicki-WHACK!" She says, "don't U ever disrespect my staff again yadayadayada..." In shock, I ask, "who told U this, Mr. Hall?" She lies telling me no, makes up some illogical scenario like an angel lead her to me -- not to mention, knowing the entire story, then says: "don't U ever come back to this gallery, you're not welcomed!" If only I could've beat them to it, I could've saved them the energy, 'cause in a big apple such as NYC, who's really gonna suffer if I can't get a lil' nibble out of ONE gallery? Very nice space. I came here for a scotch tasting so I didn't get a chance to look at the gallery artwork. Too bad that I still work during exhibit hours -it closes so early (at 6pm!) It's a great venue space for anything. I could see it to be a nice diversion over the summertime - the Highline and great restaurants are nearby. I have had to go here for my daughter's casting calls. She is a toddler model. The place is very nice and I love their snack bar on the floor they use for casting calls because I can get her a nice little snack after she gets done auditioning. I like this place and the location. read more

This place is over rated. It's full of untalented hipsters with their iPhones and Diana cameras that they don't know how to use, that call themselves photographers. Whenever I have come here to photograph an show I'm greeted by snotty, self-righteous staff. If you are a photographer beware. I hear so many photographers get their gear swiped here. So keep an eye on it and don't take chances as no one in that place can be trusted. Stolen gear most likely available for rent in their rental department. There are so many other fabulous spaces to rent in town. Save your money and take your client shoots elsewhere. read more

*Note: my review is based on Milk Studios as an event space.* I attended an event here last night for the social media platform, Impossible. When I saw several black SUVs pull up to the studio, I knew it was going to be an eventful night. There was some definite star power there, as supermodels and Sean Lennon were in attendance. There were even unique, organic mocktails with names like "Lemon Tree Wish." Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, but I felt the event was a little mismanaged and disorganized. First, there wasn't enough seating or standing tables to accommodate the crowd. I only saw two couches and a few standing tables for the huge space. Second, they had two (relatively small) open bars, which I felt barely was enough. One served beer and the other served the mocktails, and I saw the lines become very long as the night drew on. Finally, I wish there was more direction given by the host. There were no "welcoming remarks," let alone of the fact that many of us were expecting a discussion about Impossible. Also, there was a "wish tree" where you could write down your wishes and hang them like ornaments on the tree, but the guests were never notified about this. Also, since Milk is a multi-use space, it can become confusing and easy to get lost. We were told the event was on the second floor, but weren't greeted at the door of the event space. Instead, I had to ask a bartender if I was at the correct location. Overall, a fun place for a casual party, but it was lacking on the execution of a well-oiled, high-powered event. read more

Went to an event held by a whiskey distillery here- loved the space and the location. Lot's of exposed brick and high ceilings. Also, it's in Meatpacking, so there is other stuff to do before/after (depending on what the event is). However, I didn't like that the doormen were acting like bouncers at 7pm on a Wednesday night (?), and it was kind of strange to take the elevator up past floors of other businesses (but that's just me being picky). Would love to go to another event here again. read more

I tried to let this slide but a few months have passed and it's still on my mind. So.. After attending the Gucci Ghost exhibition at Milk Gallery I decided I wanted to buy a few pieces, once I got the skateboard home I realized I didn't want to keep the wheels and after calling in advance to see if I could return them and being told to come in so they could see what they could do I traveled across town in a downpour to get rid of them and buy more art. When I finally get there Emma Brinkman tells me that they don't even have a way of doing returns and it would be impossible to return them. After finding out that I was looking to buy more art and spend $10,000 more with them, then and only then does she decide oh you know what we actually do have a way of processing returns. I ended up getting the art but this way of doing business didn't sit well with me. Emma sure was excited for the return when she found out she could get another commission out of me. read more
