They need to revamp the store. Prices too high and it looks dreary. Looks like it did 30 years ago with the same bolts of fabric.

My daughter decided to celebrate graduating college by sewing some stuffed creatures. A good way to unwind, I guess. I know zilch about sewing and she's new to it. But we went to Mill End with her shopping list. The place is enormous. Sort of overwhelming, in a good way. She found everything she needed. And there were lots of super friendly, helpful people, all of whom were enthusiastic about her project. I didn't need anything but I had fun too. read more

I could have spent hours and hours and hours just wandering around in there. The selection is great, as is the quality. Service at the cutting desk was so friendly, I felt like we could have kept chatting for a while longer! I'd say the quality of the fabric was priced appropriately. I came in 7/2/25 right before closing appx 4:45pm and was getting some ric-rac cut at the front counter. I typically have great experiences with the staff here. This employee mentioned all the colors I was getting so I proudly showed her a picture of my daughter's pow wow regalia and told her I was making another outfit. She saw her eagle feather and asked where I get them. I told her sometimes they're gifted, sometimes trade handmade pieces for a feather or there's a way to apply for natural cause death eagles for ceremonial purposes since I'm enrolled tribal member. She started going on a tangent about how bad poachers are and they make a bunch of money from selling feathers. She then made a comment next about how I must be paying big money for the feathers. I told her that in our culture it's a major no to pay for eagle feathers and I would never do that. She continued on like lecturing about how bad poachers/the black market are as though I was purchasing feathers even after I just said that's not what I do. What a bummer to share my creations/culture then be accused of buying from poachers. Unprofessional and unnecessary. I've come here since a little girl with my mother who is now passed. Lots of nostalgia and always fun looking through the selection. Please talk with your staff about workplace appropriate/culture appropriate conversations. read more

This store is HUGE and their supplies, needles, elastic, zippers, thread are well priced. They have sooooo many fabrics. However, you won't know exactly what you are getting- no details on the bolt. Also, the prices aren't great for non-clearance fabric. Most are around 13-19 bucks a yard for typical cottons, flannels, lightwt jeans... there are some high end fabrics for 50-60 per yard. There are LOTS of upholstery and curtain material. The Anex has clearance fabrics but they are not large amounts this are 7-8 per yard. There is also a small sale section to the left back when you first walk in, where it is the end of the bolt and if you take the whole amount you get 40% off. So you may get lucky with these. Overall, could be good if you get lucky or if you don't mind spending $60 for three yards of fabric. We were looking for black sweatshirt material and could not find any :( so it's hit or miss. Still worth a look, especially if you are flexible. read more

I have been in this store a few times. In one of my shopping experiences, I found it strange that a cashier would tell me that the pattern I picked up was way under priced and she needed to call the lady in charge of the patterns. Huh?! The lady came and said yep that what they had priced it at. The cashier turns to me and says , let's talk about what we think is fair for this pattern. I told her what is fair is what it's priced at. Unless she wanted to call the store manager/owner so we could talk about this experience. It wasn't that cheap either, so why would a cashier take on such a role. Large store! They have a good selection of fabric for just about any craft. There's not a lot of notions but they carry the essentials. Surprisingly, a lot of buckles and connector type of notions. The prices were about the same as Joanns. Plenty of parking. They only lack in customer service. There's plenty of staff. All but one lady ignored me but she was funny! My mind is blown. When I was a little girl, there were plenty of real fabric stores, but for decades now I've lived in places where the only option is JoAnn's -- which is better than nothing but not by much. Mill End is GIGANTIC and they have every kind of fabric you can think of -- woolens, silks, athletic fabric, canvas, corduroy (when's the last time you found corduroy in a fabric store?), seersucker, etc etc etc. and they have a HUGE selection of notions -- every kind of zipper, cording, elastic, buckles, buttons... Every employee was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I will be back more often than I should! read more

I am probably more particular than most shoppers as I was trained as a fabric designer. I have been to this store a number of times looking for an interesting print for a blouse, skirt or dress, but the prints were SO matronly. It might be a good place for plain fabrics. It did appear that they had a good selection of cottons for quilting, although that wasn't my mission. The staff is always helpful, but honestly, when I hear "mill ends" it suggests that the fabrics will be at a discount. They seem to be full retail to me. read more

I loved this place. Yes, they had a great variety of fabric, yes it was well organized which was a plus for me but what stood out was that I really liked the customer service. The folks working there were very friendly and helpful. I found a lot of beautiful fabric. Was it cheap- no. Was it a fun shopping experience- absolutely. The place is huge and like I said, great variety that I'm the envy of my classmates whenever I whip out a fabric that I bought here because it was unique. Good selection of fabric but employees- y'all ok? I've never had stellar customer service here, but today employee dissatisfaction was at a high pitch. I got a stiff eye roll and a "what do you want?" When I asked for help. When we didn't find the item I needed in stock I was told to '"just google it, you'll get it in a day". Screw me for shopping local, I guess. There were 3 other instances that told me that there must be a ton of pressure in this job because the employees I see are stressed. They are hiring, as they are clearly understaffed, but who would want to work there? I left before purchasing anything else on my list today. read more

On one hand, this place is amazing....if you need a fabric or notion and can't find something here which will work than it probably can't be found! It is pretty overwhelming so plan your time accordingly because words cannot really prepare you for the size of this building. I was pretty disappointed recently with an experience I had with a friend shopping here though I do confess. My tale might help you in your journey. She needs 12 yards of lace and we found the perfect stuff here. Between this Mill End store and the Beaverton location we though we had it since Beaverton had 3 yards of it and this location (we thought) had ten yards which we put on hold. My friend called to verify the yardage and asked several times for the employee to please actually take the lace off the bolt to confirm the yardage. Thankfully she did that since someone had cut the lace into 2-4 yard sections making it worthless for her purpose. The amount of times she has had to call to try and maybe hunt down more of that lace is just over the top. So, it can be pretty frustrating if its a situation where you are not just going in, finding a perfect fabric and having a few yards cut. Its not all the folks though - putting the material on hold to start was a super easy and friendly process. read more

Mill End is the best place to go for apparel fabric, not just your humdrum craft project. Put down the glue gun and break out the nice straight pins- this is Portland's go-to place for so many of your fabric needs. Sure if you need a novelty quilt cotton, you can check out all the cutesy crap at the other places- but Mill End has got the cute too! And they got camo just to eff and toughen up your quilt! They've got cotton, flannel, silks, linens, furry stuff, sparkly stuff, utility stuff, lace, upholstery, and fashion fabrics up the wazoo. I needed a wool plaid. My gramma always wore Pendleton wool jackets and I wanted to make my mom one for Christmas, I had a vision of what I wanted and being in Alaska sadly meant no resources. I left a message on the Mill End Store's contact page, it took a few days but I heard back and the sales person offered to take pictures with her own phone and text them to me, she explained she would have to do this between customers but by the end of the day I had 17 choices with pricing, made a selection and my fabric was received within a week. I went from having a vision to having the perfect fabric within a week thanks to an awesome employee who works in an awesome store! Today I get to visit for real, in person and can hardly wait! I will do another review but my guess is it's going to be an epic day - YAE! read more

Wow! This place is vast. I was shopping around for buttons to match a jacket that I recently bought at a consignment shop. It was missing one button. I tried a few other fabric stores and I did find some nice buttons, however, my favorite ones were priced at $6.50 for two and I needed four. That's slightly more than I wanted to spend for buttons that were still not perfect. I grabbed my jacket with the missing button and we journeyed out to Mill End. I searched the many racks and still didn't find anything. I was directed to a stack of bins against the wall, all filled with buttons. After digging around for about a half hour I found the perfect buttons. I spent a grand total of .35 for four buttons. I just made another trip out there searching for the perfectly matched velvet to add sleeves to a sleeveless top. Well, DZ Alterations will add the sleeves. I don't sew. I found that some ladies working there are more helpful than others. The first woman that I asked when I was looking for my velvet just waved me in the direction of where the velvet is kept - not helpful at all. When I found my velvet, I was sure to avoid her and approached someone else who turned out to be pleasant and very informative. If you're looking for something special or just want a good deal on something basic, chances are you're going to find it here. read more

Every time we go here, I remember what an awesome place this is! The people there are super friendly and they have sooo many choices of everything! We went once in search of cotton organdy for jean repair. The other places we went looked at us like we were making up the word, but here the little lady said "Oh yes!" and went around feeling the different fabrics in her department. She said, "You can always find it by feeling the texture!" Another time we stopped in to find fabrics for making little stuffed animals and happened to catch a demo by this guy that was obviously impressive. He made custom Victorian dresses and other home decor. Today though he was demoing a Norman Rockwell pillow with piping. He explained everything in so much detail! I felt like an expert by the time we finished watching him make this pillow in like 10 minutes. They have all sorts of classes available too! I asked if they carried medium to heavy weight knits, explaining that I wanted to know if it was worth the long drive to the store. Associate was snarky and unwilling to help over the phone. I rage against the machine, the sewing machine that is. At last, I need fabric to wage war against the machine. The staff (Lee Ann in particular) are extreme helpful and knowledgeable. Not only can they explain the different blends of fabric and how to work with it but also the needles required to sew the damn stuff with. They help me with my post-nuclear sewing style. Actually it is intended to look much more stylish than it turns out to be. I digress, back on topic. The selection is amazing. They largest selection of fabric I've seen in a store yet. Bring a lunch because you'll be there that long browsing. The bargain areas can have savings up to 70%. I got $40 worth of fabric for around $5. It was something like 70% off plus 20% discount because I'm cute and seemed confused. Glad they didn't pat me on the ass and send me out the door to my demise. Come to think about it they did. Visited this place yesterday for the first time and can't believe the mass selection of fabrics. I came in looking for fabric to recover my dining room chairs and cane out with what i wanted and the prices were reasonable. In the bargain area they have a bin of cut up leftover scraps of fabrics which you pay buy the ounce which is perfect for altered journal books or art projects! Love this place and i will be back!
