My daughter and I have wanted to visit Starlight Knitting Society since we moved here, and finally, after many months, we managed to check them out on the first day of the 2026 Rose City Yarn Crawl. Though they were packed with other shoppers, the staff was welcoming, friendly, and helpful. We each purchased a few skeins of yarn, and my daughter picked up an adorable claw clip in the shape of a ball of yarn with knitting needles. There was a wide variety of yarn, from cost-conscious basics to mid-priced natural fiber staples, all the way to sumptuously decadent fiber yarns at a luxury price point. Their needle selection was robust, their notions and other celebratory yarn-goodies plentiful as well. There is literally something for everyone here! They also have a wall dedicated to cross-stitch/embroidery with super fun kits. I know I missed mentioning something since it was stuffed to the gills with people, and if I'm honest, I was a little overwhelmed, but we look forward to returning soon for a more leisurely amble. read more

Starlight Knitting Society is my personal Disneyland! I visited the store on my last day of my trip to Portland and I truly could have spent hours here. First of all, the staff were some of the nicest people I have ever met. They went above and beyond to make me feel welcomed and were happy to answer any questions I had as they came up. They were also extremely friendly and seemed to want to get to know me, what projects I'm working on, and what I was looking for. Second, the selection and prices were unbeatable. Starlight Knitting Society had so many different yarns and crafting accessories to choose from at very reasonable prices. Despite wanting to buy everything in the store, I left with a Starlight Knitting Society tote bag (my new favorite bag to carry my knitting projects in) and a tension ring. I really wish I lived closer to Starlight Knitting Society. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Portland! read more

Have ordered here before online, and loved it. We had the opportunity to stop in while we were out there for the 2024 Sacred Sheep fiber festival. I love it even more. The team working there was so helpful. I ended up getting yarn for a sweater that they had on display to knit with my friend. I found a miscellaneous set of other goodies too. I enjoyed Portland so much I was planning on heading back there for the Rose City Yarn Crawl last weekend but work got in the way. So I participated virtually, and had a fun time doing that too.Was intrigued by the knit kit for their RCYC knitted scarf pattern, check, gotta get that. Loved their bags so got a Starla bag. So what makes a good yarn store? I think it's relatively simple: it has to have great yarns, preferably very colourful, be beautifully laid out , but most importantly have great staff. I had an opportunity recently, when visiting the west coast to spend some time checking out the legendary Starlight Knitting Society. This was a lovely, well stocked and well thought out space. There was an abundance of beautiful yarn for sale, a super comfortable parlor type space for group/community knitting sessions, and a lot of cool "Starlight" logo covered things like tote bags and stickers. As we visited during the global pandemic, there were no community knitting events on the schedule, but it was easy to imagine what a wonderful social hub this business is for knitters in more typical times. Pro-tip: There is an excellent, small cafe right across the street with outdoor seating to grab something when you get hungry, so that you can return to Starlight well fed and ready to browse! read more

A lovely and relaxing store with yarn at many price points to fit anyone's budget! One day, I had come to Portland for a medical appointment at OHSU and stopped at Starlight on my way home and was invited to stay for their evening knitting night. I ended up doing just that because traffic is so bad at 4 pm on I-5. I stayed and knitted until 7 pm then the traffic was significantly reduced and had a relaxing drive home! I have made the trek across town to go to Starlight on six occasions. I receive their newsletter and make the trip to pick out high end yarn and accessories that they carry. A good yarn shop is worth the 40 minute one-way trek! And I have purchased lovely yarn and awesome accessories here. I do not write bad reviews for businesses. However, the service I have received on three separate occasions has been absolutely horrible. It is the same employee - a tall aloof woman - I just don't understand being treated this way. I want to purchase items and support a local yarn store, but after a 50% service record, I can no longer justify this. The last time I was at the register with a pile of goods and she helped someone who walked up after me and then left the register to wind some yarn. There was no query "are you ready to check out?" Or "someone will be right with you". She just left. I waited for a five minutes for acknowledgement, but then put everything back and left the store. I was appalled. I am simply recounting my experience. And I hope the owner does not dismiss this review. I would think you could not afford to miss out on large sales and suffer bad reviews. I found it shocking since all my friends rave about selection and service / help. Customer service should be positive - I do not have time to be treated horribly by someone who thinks they are better than everyone else. read more

This is my favorite LYS even though it's not in my neighborhood. They have a huge space with lots of places to sit and knit. I enjoy their classes and how helpful and patient the teachers are with newbies. I learned to knit here and also have been able to get lots of support in developing my skills. I sort of missed the boat on "Cheers." It stopped airing in the early 90s while I was still stuck on shows like "Doug" and infinite reruns of "Bewitched." I only ever knew it as "that bar where everyone knows your name" and "that place that everyone takes photos of in Boston." I want to believe that Starlight is my Cheers. Not that everyone (anyone) knows my name, but the place hits all the rights notes of cozy, homey, and the intimacy of a dear friend's living room. There is something infinitely calming about running my hands along piles of gorgeous yarn and dreaming up all the things I could knit from them (even if I'm at least a year into my attempt at a first sweater.) The sample knits are flawlessly beautiful, the trunk shows are inspiring, and the baskets of yarn are the very embodiment of autumnal hygge. Deserving of their own paragraph: the staff. Endlessly patient, welcoming, and encouraging. Whether I'm in the shop for 5 minutes or a few hours, they're willing to work with me to correct my mistakes, offer suggestions, and tell me that they'll help me finish this damn sweater, come hell or high water. Disappointing experience. I went in to look at their selection which is alright, some worthwhile names, but my experience with the service left much to be desired. I knew from their Instagram that they were running a promotion, but when I came in no one mentioned anything, they did however let me know they have a color coding system they use for yarn weight which is neat. But when I had a question about some project bags the girl at the register just snapped that was all they carried and when I tried to clarify my question she again ignored my question and repeated that was all they carried. Their loss, I can always buy somewhere else. read more

Excellent customer service with a great selection of yarns. The storefront is cute and inviting. Upon entering it feels warm and welcoming, very open and well lit without being too bright. I was on an extended road trip from the Midwest to visit yarn shops in the PNW. I was excited about visiting yarn shops in Portland. This was the biggest let down of my trip. They made me wait 2 hours outside while they held a class. I have a mobility impairment and ended up sitting on a wall outside the store. the selection of yarns was ok but the hovering of staff members was a turn off. I got the feeling this is more status driven than other yarn shops, everyone trying to make the latest thing. Cute store name aside, I would not go back. Public transit is available within a couple blocks. read more

Starlight is such a wonderful little yarn store. Small but mighty! There is a wonderful selection of different priced yarns, including some that are hard to find or often sought after. They have a fantastic selection of Spincycle Yarns, The Dye Project, Woolen Boon... It's a cozy place to knit a few rows, too. They have a larger than average play area for littles, which is really nice! The staff is so friendly and helpful too, going above and beyond. Definitely my favorite neighborhood yarn store. It's small, but has a startling variety of yarns, and they're clearly committed to supporting smaller fiber artisans. They have a great selection of other little things too, candles and project bags and some knit-related jewelry. The staff is the sweetest, and very knowledgeable about the fiber arts. They have the friendliest knit night on Wednesdays, with tea, sometimes people bring cookies, everyone oohs and aahs over each other's projects and happily shares tips and tricks on little knitting snafus. Legit my only complaint is that they don't have addi needles, but that's so minor that I wouldn't dream of docking them a star for it. Come here. Bathe in fiber. Buy it all. read more

I come here almost every week. It's so cozy, laid back and comfortable. Going here is like going to a favorite pub or coffee lounge where everybody knows you. The staff is so neighborly and great company. I like to bring my 1yo here because she loves to hang out in their little play room which is stocked with coloring books and toys. I get to buy yarn, do some knitting, chat with the fine folks and have a good time with my kid. Total win. They have a great selection of beautiful high quality yarn. It's a small shop that offers a lot of locally hand spun hand dyed, therefore often limited inventory. The pro is that you're supporting local small businesses and artisans but this does often mean I run out of yarn for a project and have a hard time acquiring more. But if you plan accordingly, all will go well, and I'm otherwise very, very happy to support this place. I'm so glad Woodstock finally has a LYS and I'm so glad it's such a lovely place! read more
