this place is great. I thought I already wrote a review but I guess not. First off, I signed up for a 1 on 1 class with Claire, and highly recommend it. I'm very new to knitting, and this was just what I needed. I got some important tips, and learned something called Tink! Previously I came in with my first ever project looking for some tips. Two ladies at the front desk took a lot of time to help me out. I also left with some nice little tools that really helped me out. Friendly staff, and it looks like they have a big selection for a small space. Definitely come by and check them out, and bring your project if you need some help. I learned about this shop from the Cascade Wool website, but had no idea for what I was in for when I got to the store. Natural fiber heaven! Rainbows of beautiful yarns everywhere! I made a quick scouting mission earlier in the week, and then went back yesterday to make a purchase. The staff was very warm and welcoming both times, and knew both their stock and the techniques behind using it. I'm working on a weaving project, and after a quick tour of everything in the shop, was given a good recommendation of a yarn for my project. I felt treated like an old friend that had gone to visit. I'm new to fiber arts, but the pricing seems really reasonable, especially considering they carry high quality products. I even had to splurge a little--a Madeleine Tosh yarn screamed at me from the shelf that it needed to come home with me, so it did! I will definitely be back. My 4th grader wanted to learn to crochet so we signed up for a three hour lesson. The staff helped us pick the right yarn and hooks, and we were introduced to the instructor, Jacob. Three very fast hours later, we are pros! Ok not really, but Jacob was an incredibly patient teacher, with a clear teaching style, and a ready smile. They made the learning process fun for both of us. We will be back for sure. read more

I visited the store for the first time yesterday and based on the website and the good reviews I expected friendly help. Instead I got a seemingly bored young man at the cash register overly ready to ring up the wool and needles I was still considering and unhelpful to the point of rudeness when I asked his advice and questions about the wool. A young woman stocking the shelves was nice and helpful. Overall such an unpleasant experience I am unlikely to return. read more

What a delightful store with friendly, happy staff. My beau and I went in to check it out and purchase yarn. As I do not live in SW PDX, this was a new store for me to poke around in. What a knitter's dream store. So much color therapy for me on a gray winter's day. We purchased 3 skeins: Malabrigo Rios- ceilo y tierra(2) and Debbie Bliss Rialto Luxury Sock - 9 Benicassim(1). The staff inquired of my intended projects (Honey cowl & magic loop toe up socks) and turned us on to their frequent shopper stamp card. We had the 2 ball of Rios wound on the Swift immediately. We learned that NW Wools is the oldest yarn shop (30yrs) in Portland. As well as found out about the 2019 Yarn Crawl! I will be back. read more

Wow don't let the outside fool you, there is a LOT of great yarn in this store! I've been to a few other yarn stores in the area and this one restored my faith in local yarn stores. I will definitely be back, even though I live in SE. The huge selection of many yarns I'd previously only seen online was fabulous and exciting. They have a customer punch card system too. I needed this place so badly on the day I ended up there. Everyone was amazing and they had a flier about a Mystery Crochet Along out and... No one ever has stuff for crocheters. I've never gotten to do a a mystery crochet along. I love, love, looooove their selection of yarns. I would say about 50% are soft and they have a modest amount of alpaca, as well as an extensive selection of shawl pins. They have an entire wall devoted to gray wool and it is decently soft, so that is really happy. I love gray. They seem to offer an extensive number of classes, which is cool, although I was simply sitting and knitting with people. The sitting area is on the smaller side -seems like it would be a great place, but people would end up on the floor, although who knows. Ultimately I had my eye on some yarn and it works for the MCAL, so I'm doing the Portlander MCAL and I bought the yarn =) Everyone wins. Can't wait to participate remotely. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area, although a warning: Parking will likely be a bit challenging. Be prepared to walk a block or so. read more

A much-beloved and long-standing feature of the main street shops in Multnomah Village, this local yarn store (LYS) is an outstanding and thriving example of the genre. They have an outstanding collection of yarn, fiber and fiber tools, including some spinning and dyeing supplies. They have friendly and knowledgeable staff and offer classes in various fiber arts daily. They also have wonderfully overstuffed furniture in the front window where knitters can hang out, relax and knit to their hearts' content. Highly recommended! read more

i was so excited to find this store. i am disabled and have a service dog. i started to enter and the person working there yelled at me that the owner is allergic and almost slammed the door in my face. i have a severe invisible disability and i wonder what the response would have been if i was blind and had a service dog. Or in a wheelchair. i want to go there so badly. but i am afraid of being treated that way again. i know all about allergies. i'd be happy to have my dog washed before coming there. to take any and all precausions. that isn't spelled right. i do not want anymore else to be treated this way. read more

I loved this charming yarn store as soon as I set foot inside. Everything was so beautifully organized and the selection was great! The ladies working the shop were so nice and friendly. I finally managed to swing in to the store this last weekend after years of wanting to. I hate trying to navigate SW Portland almost as much as I hate trying to find parking in SW Portland. While finding parking was just as hard as I knew it would be, this store absolutely made up for it. It is full, floor to ceiling and on every surface, of one of the best selections of yarn I have found in Portland. The prices are competitive with other stores like this, although much more expensive than chain stores like Joann's (because they carry a higher quality of yarn). The reason that finally made me visit was my need for wool roving to spin into yarn myself. I was definitely not disappointed! They have a great selection of pre-dyed and natural fibers in many different wools and blends. They also have a very cheap undyed top which was exactly what I was looking for to practice with. It is sooooo much softer and more pleasant to spin than the generic wool blend top I ordered online. The only thing they didn't have that I was hoping to find was some acid dye to dye the yarn I am currently spinning. I will definitely be back! read more

I love to knit, and I love this little shop. They have an exquisite and fairly large selection of yarns of all different fibers. There's something for everyone, all the different levels of knitters, from beginners to experts. There are wonderful displays of hand knit items, with patterns along side them. I've done a few of these, and it's helpful to see a finished product before you begin. Pretty much ensures you know what you're getting. The shop is very well laid out and organized. The shopkeepers are helpful, and attentive. I'm doing a hat pattern at the moment, and made a silly mistake not marking where I was at in the pattern when I stopped the other night. I picked up where I thought I left off on the pattern yesterday, and again this afternoon, and then realized, oops, I skipped a huge step, quite a few rows back. I am terrible at pulling out rows without dropping stitches, and it takes me forever. I brought my hat into the shop, and asked if they would mind pulling them out for me, and they were happy to do so... and only took them a few minutes. Phew, would have taken me at least an hour. I spent too much money here (of course) but all the colors and textures seduced me. The prices seemed pretty reasonable for the high quality, unique yarns. I'm still a novice knitter so I'm mostly still on small projects that don't take much yarn and (luckily) don't cost much. I actually went in looking for needles, but was too distracted by yarn. When I moved to Multnomah Village I was so excited to have a yarn shop right by my house but have to say I was a little disappointed in this shop. They have a pretty good selection actually but I just didn't get a good feel from the place. When I asked the cashier about if they had a weekly group, she said they did but that I probably wouldn't like it as it was mostly older women and pretty stuffy (I'm in my 20s) and actually recommended I go elsewhere. If you're just looking to get in and out to get supplies it's fine, but if you're looking for more of a social, community type yarn shop it might not be your best bet. Edit: I was contacted by the owner to come back in for a complimentary skein and give things another shot. I was really pleasantly surprised, the vibe was much more open, welcoming, and accommodating. I must have just gone on an off day before! Mary had a little lamb when she was a kid. Things progress in her life and she went to college. As the story goes, the lamb is sure to follow her. She ran low with her cheddar. Can't and won't strip as that's against her morals. Oh ofcourse, her lamb! No, avid readers, she did not let the lamb dance for her! Mary sheared her for fine wools. Now, I wonder if Mary's lamb's wools went here. Cause this store sure stock some good wool! As most of my stores discontinue their wool yarns, this is a heaven for it. This heaven sorts it by colors which is easy for the eye. And they almost have every hue in stock. They have a lovely staff that can assist you with questions (Yes, even as basic as how to knit) and suggestions. I have to get out before I get tangled. read more

On my first visit I was quite the novice when it came to things like yarn and I still wasn't sure what is could possibly mean to "purl" but the staff were able to help me learn the lingo, make informed decisions about what I would really neat to create what I had envisioned in my head and they give me lots of useful tips. They have a great selection of yarn and I just love the location in Multnomah village...its a great place to walk around, get some coffee and enjoy the local scene. read more

This cute little store has a pretty good selection of yarns and the staff is really friendly. I highly recommend spending a sunny weekend afternoon in Multnomah Village. A bus comes right through here, so leave your car at home. Plenty of good antique stores, book stores, and restaurants. I have visited many storefronts of this type and can see that this place stands above those. They have a great selection of yarns and accessories. I think the only thing lacking here are the patterns and pattern books that I have seen with some other places. Buyer Beware! On a recent Friday visit...and I shopped here often, I got some yarn and a new needle for a project. Yummy yarn, and what should have been a US3 lace point circular....nearly $20. When I got home, the needle was a US6, and I already owned a US6. I tried to exchange the needle the following Monday, but the store owner refused, citing it was 'industry policy' not to exchange needles. She became extremely defensive, and I left angry and humiliated. I will not return to this store and I have shared my story of the incident with all my knitting friends. My advice to you, my friend, since you are not allowed behind the counter to select the needle: Be sure the item the employee selects for you from behind the counter is really the ones you want, they do not make exchanges even if they make a mistake. read more

This is my neighborhood LYS. When I'm making everyday projects for the holidays. They are wonderful giving help and the prices are very reasonable. One thing I've noticed is that if you're having a problem that you can't seem to get out of, they are the ones to go to. Very patient and will take the time to answer questions. There always seems to be a class going on, which is great. If you're into spinning, they've got lots of supplies and raw wool. Walking through the store always seems to lower my blood pressure and restore a sense of calm. read more
