A few years ago I used to frequent this Coffee Shop often and enjoy drinking my Caffè Mochas together with some hot breakfast sandwiches there. As a matter of fact my main Yelp profile picture was taken there in that Coffee Shop. But during covid they put a hold on the hot breakfasts and only served hot coffee, tea, muffins, danishes, and cinnamon rolls. So I decided to return to the place to see how it was doing, see what had changed, have a cup of coffee and breakfast there, and write a review. I arrived early in the morning at around 7:00am, the time the Downtown Coffee Shop opens. A young man behind the counter greeted me and asked me if I knew what I wanted to order as soon as I arrived. I asked him if they now had hot breakfasts again like in the time before covid. But he told me that in this store in particular they had discontinued the hot breakfasts. So I ordered a Caffè Mocha and a cinnamon roll. As I waited for the coffee to be made and served I walked around the store and found that the area for community announcements and for people to leave their business cards was still there as well as some of the complimentary magazines, but not all they use to have. I also found that the glass built into the wall display case they used to have full of t-shirts, coffee mugs and tumblers was completely empty, to the point of looking as it had been abandoned. Also, the wall where they used to exhibit for sale artworks of artists members of our community no longer was full. At this time my Coffee and cinnamon rolls were ready, so I took them from the counter. Heated the cinnamon roll in the microwave and had my breakfast. The coffee was as good as always and the cinnamon roll was fine. Later I asked the barista about what I earlier had found and he just confirmed the fact and told me that in the other of their stores they did have everything that was missing in this store, which to me now looked like one of those abandoned old Malls after a new one just opened in town. I wondered and asked myself: How could a local chain such as Mill Mountain Coffee & Tea have abandoned their Downtown Roanoke store in this way? I know there is competition, but how can it compete with nothing creative to do so. This store is very significant to the Downtown area, to the Roanoke community, and to the tourist that frequent the area. So rather than give it a 3 rating, I will give it a 4, and give you the benefit of the doubt, with the hope that after the Management of the Mill Mountain Coffee Shop chain reads my review they put their act together and do what is needed to bring the Star to this Mill Mountain Coffee Shop again. For the purpose of my reviews is not to point out the negative, but to give constructive criticism so that both the store can improve and the community can benefit by having a quality place in which to enjoy a quality product in a relaxing and beautiful environment. A business should not run just to survive but to grow so that both the community and the owners profit from it. The famous Q2. Quality will bring Quantity. Come on, I believe in you. Let's do what is needed so next time not only will you have earned a 5 Star review in paper but also in the eyes of the community of the great Star City of Roanoke in the Commonwealth of Virginia! read more

I have a close friend who went to school in Roanoke and had the chance to visit a few times... This was one of my favorite stops I made Downtown. It's a cute little hipster coffee shop serving locally roasted fresh coffee and baked goods, and featuring local events. Just one person was working when we visited but out items came out quick. The worker thankfully wasn't swamped by orders or anything, but seemed to have to keep busy. I ordered a limeade, along with a fresh cranberry orange muffin. This bite to eat proved to be delicious and refreshing. My friends also enjoyed their coffee and baked goods!! We then sat in the warm cafe for a bit before heading back out to the cold city. It proved to be quite comfy and I was able to charge my phone! I really love Roanoke and all it has to offer - one of my fav features is this cute coffee and tea shop!! Stop in and get a cold or hot beverage and a snack on the go, or stay a while!! read more

Early for my appointment and needing coffee, I lucked out with a parking space in front and hung out in Mill Mountain Coffee for about a half hour on their internet. The barista made an excellent cortado. If you're usually drinking lattes, try a cortado next time. Instead of foamed milk, it's 50/50 with steamed milk. I think it makes for a better flavor and the one I had this morning was great. Nice, comfy spot. The remaining tables are set to ensure social distancing and masks are required. A quaint place in the middle of downtown. Parking can be difficult to find but there is a paid lot right next to it. It's a cute place with a decent coffee menu. They even have cold drinks including Italian sodas. I got the cappuccino and a cranberry/orange muffin. He got the same with the cinnamon muffin. It tasted like a coffee cake and was very good. Mine was slightly too sweet but tasty. The cappuccino itself was good. The small comes with two espresso shots, the medium with 3, and large with 4. Two medium cappuccinos and two muffins came out to about $17. It's a little pricey but still nice. It wasn't busy but the people inside were pretty loud and annoying even at the opposite end of the building. They were loud and trying to sound important. I would definitely come back. I usually go to the one down south but I moved downtown. So this is it. Very poorly managed. The staff, while absolutely the nicest people, are usually wholly unhelpful. But the coffee is great! It takes about 20 minutes to pour a simple cup when you're the only customer in the building. Don't ask for anything else, you'll be there til your next birthday. I've come here maybe 20ish times and each time I ask if I can buy something from their cabinet of shirts as I buy my coffee. Invariably, the answer was always "we don't have the key." The manager has the key. And the manager is never there no matter what time of day (I've come all times from 9am to 10pm). So one night after standing at the counter not sure which nametagless person is supposed to be helping me for about five minutes, I decided I don't really want a tee from them no matter what their coffee tastes like... read more

It's a nice enough coffeeshop and a good location in downtown Roanoke but the service seemed slightly rushed and while my iced tea was fine the lemon bar I bought tasted a little bit stale. I will admit I have a larger issue than many people with coffeeshop sweets in that I expect if the shop bothers to do them at all, I do expect high quality. If you cannot make and sell fresh pastries, then don't bother. Too many places either bring in sweets from outside or for whatever reason have too many and they don't sell in a timely manner so some become stale. Something of this nature seemed to be the ignoble fate of my lemon bar. That aside, if you're downtown it's not a bad place to get something to drink--coffee or tea or whatever--and chill. read more

Their black-tea-based iced tea infused with assam and blackberries was a perfectly refreshing accompaniment to the cookie, and the staff were friendly, patient, and helpful. Nice cozy coffee shop in the downtown of Roanoke. It has a lot of potential and it all starts with the coffee. What attract my attention was the sign outside stating an. 'full' espresso bar with on own grinds. I was think thinking, "great." but as Iwent up to order my espresso. I inquired what roasts were used for their espressos and they gave me a blank stare. I ordered a double espresso anyway...needless to say, the espressos tasted more like a dark roast American coffee. A bit on the watery side for an espresso... Unfortunately the espresso is what I based my review on, seems like others enjoy the cafe food offered. Don't let my review on the espresso discourage you from going in. Wasn't such a fan of this downtown Roanoke cafe/ coffee shop. They have a large selection of coffee drinks. Wanted a latte with banana syrup and, of course, they're out of it. Opted for a latte with blueberry syrup and it was just awful. Bitter with a funky after taste. The French silk cake was way too sweet as well. Seating is uncomfortable, service is a tad snooty but prices are slightly cheaper than Starbucks. Didn't like what I had and not recommended. read more

A three because the customer service was so nice. For this to be the 'premier coffee house of Roanoke' I wasn't impressed. My tea, although loose leaf, wasn't properly measured. There was waaaay too much tea in the pouch making it bitter. The coffee selections, although impressive, most listed could not be brewed to order. Went searching for coffee this morning and decided to check out Mill Mountain because I looked at their menu and saw they had breakfast as well. Got there and ordered my two coffees and then ordered a bacon egg and cheese biscuit only to be told they haven't been serving food since Covid started? I was confused and pretty disappointed because I looked at their website prior to showing up and there was no mention of no serving food. I had a dirty Iced Chai and my wife had a iced vanilla latte, although when it was handed to me by the server she said iced white mocha, so not exactly sure what we got. Have great baked goods but my experience is that they are gone later in the day. That's the pitfall is wanting baked fresh items. My almond milk latte tasted decent but I had to wait over 30 minutes not to scald my throat. After 3 ice cubes (which as a coffee advocate I would never typically do), it tasted just ok. My sandwich came out quick but was mostly tasteless. Meanwhile my mom waited and extra 15 minutes for an omelette and when she asked about it was met with an unfriendly staff. When it came it was burnt and the cook said he had to remake it once already. The shop itself is cute but it was a poor experience all around, do not recommend. read more

I've lived in downtown Roanoke, on and off, for upwards of fifteen years, and I've never had a good experience here. Ever. I'll pop in every few months out of pure desperation, when nothing else is open, and each time I hope that perhaps management has changed and they've gotten rid of the surly, disaffected hipsters who work behind the counter, but NOPE. Being an absolute jerk is obviously a prerequisite for employment at MM. You need a clichéd lumberjack beard, a perpetual scowl, and a crappy and patronizing demeanor. I ordered a coffee with almond milk shortly after they opened on Election Day morning, and a bleary-eyed dude proceeded to fill up a cup and splash the teensiest, tiniest amount of milk in it. I NICELY asked him to add a little more of the milk; I even said I didn't care if he poured a decent amount of coffee out of my cup beforehand, and offered to do it myself. Dude proceeded to sarcastically fill my cup with more almond milk until it was teeming with liquid. He slowly and dramatically put on the lid, handed me my overflowing beverage without a word, and turned his back to me. I went to their little sugar counter -- I'd asked them to add sugar, but they ignored me -- and tried to remove the lid without making a mess, but coffee proceeded to spill everywhere. I then walked back to my apartment with a soggy clump of napkins around my sopping, messy cup and sipped my scalding, mediocre drink. I suppose that it's kind of Mill Mountain's "brand" to be as rude as humanly possible -- I should anticipate their treatment by now -- but really angers me that I threw down a dollar as a tip for a beverage that cost me about three bucks. I should have honestly reached in that fish bowl and taken back my money. I've waited tables, bartended, worked at tons of front desks, and have even been a barista, so I know how hard it is. People are often cheap and demanding. But my request was an easy one -- and if Douchey McBeard was looking down on me for ordering almond milk instead of dairy, I can think of two words I'd love to say to his face if I ever go in there again...which I won't. :-) PEOPLE: NEVER GO HERE. Bread Craft and On the Rise have far better coffee, food that's *monumentally* more edible, and helpful and communicative employees who don't look like they want to stab you. The MM people need to realize that just because they've been in Roanoke for a long time doesn't mean they'll be here forever. New businesses are encroaching on their territory every year. Love stopping here whenever I'm nearby! Both the espresso and brewed coffee is excellent. The baristas were friendly and one of them even remembered my name! The shop has a unique vibe and ample seating. I've grabbed lunch here a couple of times too, but I've never been extremely impressed with the food. As you'd expect downtown, sometimes parking can be tricky around here, but the location is great otherwise. I have to say, compared to many of the top notch coffee shops just down the road in Lynchburg, this place could definitely take some notes. While not a 5/5 coffee joint in my books, I still look forward to coming back next time I'm in the area! read more

Even though I grew up in Christiansburg, it wasn't until this past weekend when I was visiting from Vancouver that I finally tried this place out that all locals rave about. This area isn't super urban, but if you want to grab a good cup of coffee in downtown Roanoke, this is a great spot to do so. I got one of their seasonal drinks-- some type of lavender chai latte, and oh boy, was that great. Subtle taste of lavender blended in with a clean and smooth chai latte was just what I needed before heading to the airport. Service was okay, the burly man who took my order might've been fatigued from a long day at work, or maybe he was put off by my preppy/upbeat demeanor (I was excited to see my husband after a couple months), but I did notice he was much friendlier to a friend of mine who definitely fits in more with the hipster/rustic vibe. Me no like. First off the place has a prime location in downtown Roanoke, and I am afraid they take full advantage knowing they are the only coffee shop in the area. This may be their only saving grace. Issues: 1. Rude associates behind the counter and preparing the coffee. Witnessed a staff member slicing and plating cakes in the back kitchen area (who was not wearing gloves) who was plating the slices of cake and then licking her fingers before moving on to the next piece of cake! Sister attacked by a member of staff attempting to give her some flyer for a "casting call" looking for "teenagers" for some movie/commercial or something else. When we politely explained she was not a "teenager", but was in her late twenties he told her she'd pass. We later went on to explain we were not from here and he proceeded to tell us that she could just hop on a plane and fly back for the shoots. (Hello, have you ever tried to fly from anywhere into Roanoke Airport? It is not a cheap ticket...) 4. The coffee, I mean this is why we came, is just NO GOOD. Sad, but true. I've been to other Mill Mountain Coffee Shops, and their coffee is just fine, so it has to be the people making it that deserve the blame here. If you need coffee and are in downtown Roanoke you had better get yourself some of the new Starbucks Instant Coffee packets and brew it up yourself, otherwise you are in for a world of drama and bad coffee if you stop in here. We stopped by Mill Mountain Coffee last night. It was the worst experience ever! First of all they were not busy AT ALL. There were only a few people in the shop, and no one in line. The two girls working seemed completely irritated we were in there. They did not greet us, but instead rolled their eyes as I ordered. I tipped them too, for some stupid reason. My son spilled his drink on accident. I know this is SO annoying, so I asked for a towel so I could clean it up myself. The girl was so irritated again and told me no. Assuming they would get him another drink and clean the spill, we waited. They never came over. Again, not busy and no one in line. I had to go ask for a drink for him. She told me it was going to be a while. So we wait. She finally comes to clean the spill, (which I was more then happy to clean), and she tells us we could move somewhere else. By now everyone in our party is pissed off, and tell her we would be happy to get out of the store as soon as we get his drink. She says that we needed to tell the girl making the drinks. We proceed to tell her that we did already tell her. This place is a joke. I called this morning, and the gentleman I spoke with says they get calls like this all the time. I'm not sure who is running this business, but I would be mortified to have employees treating people this way. I don't care what kind of day they had, you do not treat people that way. Avoid. We always try to visit local places instead of Starbucks/IHOP/etc... This was recommended, but I'm thinking it was because of the coffee and not the food. The coffee was mediocre at best. My iced almond milk mocha was fine. My husband's large black coffee somehow took 15 minutes. The 2 espresso coolers were bright white, sickeningly sweet, and had almost zero espresso. Yuck. My BLT was tiny and mostly air. My husband's French toast was cold, yellow wonder bread with a side of cold eggs. The two omelets were pretty good and came out hot. We were the only people that ordered hot food and it took 30 minutes for those items. We won't be coming back. read more

Came in specifically to use the internet while in town for work and asked about it and was told that it was high speed and would work fine. Couldn't even load a basic website and in return was told that there must be too many people using it. This was after I had ordered everything and set up my computer to work etc. honesty would be a better policy if their internet can't handle high volume. read more

Solid breakfast spot! Hard to go wrong with a Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit (satisfying and made with real eggs) and a Bagel with Lox (my all-time favorite breakfast). And of course, their coffee is on point; I really enjoyed my latte. Managed to grab a table on their back patio which unfortunately is right next to their garbage bins, but when it's a sunny day, I can't refuse an outdoor patio. Nice location downtown, a good coffee shop frequented by locals, and a super casual atmosphere. I'll definitely return here the next time I'm strolling through Roanoke. read more

One finally walked over and stared at me rather than greeting me, waited about 60 seconds, then uttered, "I mean I can take your order of you want..." not the best way to address a customer. I said,"nevermind, sorry to bother you" and his only response was, "okay" so I left. I support local business 100% when worthy, but I will be heading to Starbucks from now on. read more

Great location. If you are staying at Hotel Roanoke, a walk across the walkway and you can grab some breakfast, etc. Prices - for a breakfast are very reasonable, but I only had a bagel so I cannot comment on quality. Key Lime Cheesecake, delicious, it seemed a little pricey for the area, but it was tasty and I was on 'vacation' so I didn't mind. Coffee - being from the 'big city' and having coffee at establishments where they take coffee very seriously (Vigilante); given the set up at MMC&T I didn't expect anything more than a hot and regular cup of joe. What I got was a completely opposite, it seemed to have been brewed half-hardheartedly. I actually couldn't finish it and I'm not picky, at home I'll sometimes brew Eight O'Clock, actually pretty good for a basic if you haven't tried. I didn't complain but did ask for a 'switch out' for another brew and gave it to my husband. They had at least 10 carafes behind the counter, the conference room type. Not sure if they had a large selection of brews or if this was their set-up. My thoughts are that you'd have a different set-up - maybe two large carafes and a smaller selection of brews? Switch out brews on different days? Something to keep the coffee hot and fresh. The overall menu was also too extensive and all over the place - literally, tailor it down and provide quality over quantity. Just a thought. Customer service - very nice. My daughter and I stopped in late one evening. Customer service was excellent. I ordered a mocha breve and it was one of the best I've had. Not too sweet. My daughter, our little tea snob", enjoyed discussing tea with the barista who was very knowledgeable and took the time to talk tea with her. Coffee: Very Good! I really enjoy the coffee and they have a wide selection of specialty drinks. I usually get an Americano, which isn't very complex but it is always enjoyable. Food: Good. I've only had breakfast items and pastries but they are always enjoyable. Prices: Fair. Coffee shops are always a little over priced. Atmosphere: Good. Full of locally owned charm. Mill Mountain is always inviting and the music is at a good level for chatting with friends or working. The clientele can be a little hipstery, but it's a locally owned coffee shop so that's not really surprising. Make sure you ask for the wifi password while you're ordering because it's locked. Location: Good. Downtown Roanoke has really been cleaning up their act. Mill Mountain is close Center in the Square and the farmers market so it's a great first stop on a trip downtown. Parking can be difficult, as it is anywhere downtown. Service: Hit or Miss. Sometimes the baristas, cashiers, and cooks are friendly and quick and sometimes they are rude and take for ever. If you walk in and they aren't smiling you got a rude one and should expect an attitude when you order because clearly she's cooler than you and has something way more pressing than her job to do. Also, if there are more than two people waiting for food and you have less than 20 minutes you should just order a pastry because it won't be ready in time (even if you only order a bagel). On the other hand if you walk in and the cashier is smiling and there isn't a line feel free to order away, they're on their A game that day! read more
