Hands down one of my favorite places in Utah. The hiking is incredible, with so many trails to choose from that it never gets old. It's also super dog-friendly, which makes it even better, I love being able to bring my pup along and see other happy dogs out on the trails. I come here year-round and every season is special in its own way. Snowshoeing in the winter is peaceful and beautiful, and visiting in the summer, fall, and spring brings totally different scenery and vibes each time. Millcreek Canyon is located close to Big Cottonwood Canyon but is far more pet-friendly. In fact, it felt designed with dogs in mind--there were bag and trash stations for pet waste, plus signs posted noting which days dogs are allowed off-leash. We love giving Luna off-leash time on hikes like this, as long as she stays on the trails and listens when we call her back or ask her to wait. After a long day of driving, we decided to stretch our legs on the Rattlesnake Trail (not my favorite name, but we went for it). The hike was 2.79 miles and took us about 1.5 hours to complete. It was rated as moderate, with plenty of inclines and beautiful views on the way up--the descent was much easier. Entry was $5, which you pay on your way out. Overall, it was a great way to get some exercise and let Luna roam in a safe, welcoming environment. read more

Millcreek Canyon is one our our go-to hiking areas near SLC. There are trails of varying difficulty - most of which can be found on the All Trails app. Shortly after entering the canyon and passing the toll booth, you will likely lose cell service so plan accordingly. There are some campground restrooms throughout the canyon. Dogs are allowed in the canyon. Odd numbered days are off leash days and even numbered days dogs must be on leash. Bikers are not allowed in the canyon on odd numbered days although you might still see them. read more

This is an absolutely beautiful canyon! It would be a dream to have a wedding at this canyon. There are plenty of picnic tables with campfire structures as well as barbecues in some areas. They allow dogs up the canyon, and on certain days you can have your dogs off leash! People will either jog or ride bikes on the side of the road. However, there are cars who will go up and down the canyon at the same time, creating a rather dangerous situation. To visit the canyon, you have to pay per vehicle. I believe the price is $10 per vehicle, but you can purchase a pass and renew it annually for just $50. You'll be able to visit the canyon as often as you'd like. I also believe they have senior discounts! read more

Such a gorgeous and scenic canyon to explore year-round. Some things I love about Millcreek is the easy accessibility from the city, the access to the river, and its stunning views. I've had so many beautiful memories up here and would love to explore more and try Log Haven someday. The only downside is there was a lot of construction when I visited yesterday, and the road abruptly ended with no pedestrian access. This limited where we were able to hangout but we still found a lovely spot by the river! read more

A gem of a canyon. Hikes for all levels, some closer to the valley floor and others much higher in elevation. The Pipeline/Shoreline combo trailhead alone could keep someone busy for several weekends. Epic panoramic views are all around. This canyon charges $5/car via credit card when you exit, which can't be covered by any other passes (state or national parks). It's 100% worth it, but a bit strange when the other local canyons are free. The poor behavior of dog owners in Millcreek leads me to deduct a star. There is simply too much dog poop on trails and also unleashed dogs on leash-required days. It would be great if dogs were banned here like they are in the Cottonwoods. read more

Millcreek Canyon is a beautiful canyon with great hiking, biking, and picnicking. We frequently mountain bike in Millcreek Canyon during the summer and fall. The upper trails accessible off the Wasatch Crest are fantastic and fun. I also enjoy biking to Dog Lake and the Upper Pipeline Trail. Millcreek is beautiful throughout the year, but fall is super spectacular when the aspens turn golden yellow. During the winter, snowshoeing in Millcreek Canyon is fun and a good way to avoid the crowds in Little and Big Cottonwood. Unfortunately, careless dog owners frequently don't clean up after their pets, which spoils Millcreek. Hiking with kids is difficult enough without having to worry about them stepping on dog poop. I wish that Millcreek would prohibit dogs altogether. read more

I've lived in the valley most of my life, and have never been to Millcreek Canyon until 6 years ago when I joined a hiking group. Big Cottonwood had always been my go to. Millcreek is my second favorite canyon now, and I have been on most of their trails. I even summited Grandeur Peak! Bikes: Are allowed on Big Water, Little Water, and Great Western trails on Even numbered days. Are NOT allowed on the upper Mill Creek Big Water, Little Water and Great Western trails on odd numbered days. With the exceptions, bikes are always allowed on the Pipeline Trail and are never allowed in the Mt. Olympus Wilderness Area. Dogs: Dogs must be ON-LEASH at all times in all areas of the canyon on Even-numbered days. Dogs are allowed OFF-LEASH on trails on Odd-numbered days. Dogs (and horses) must remain outside of watershed areas. PLEASE PROPERLY DISPOSE OF DOG WASTE. LOTS OF DOG POOP AND DOG BAGS LINING THE TRAILS. Fees: There is a fee to use this canyon $5.00 Daily, $3.00 Senior, $50.00 Annual, $30.00 Annual Senior. This is a great little canyon HOWEVER there doesn't seem to be a limit on how many people can squeeze into vehicles and pick the mountain.There's a lack of respect w/ social distancing during the pandemic. As a person who's HIGH RISK & loves the great outdoors makes for a disappointing experience. There should be a limit and turn away once a limit has been reached. For the above reasons is the reason I deducted 2 stars. read more

It may not get the laud and loud praise that you find in the Cottonwood Canyons, but I guess that's what happens when you don't have a ski resort. Still, Millcreek Canyon is a local treasure. First things first, if you're not familiar with the canyon you'll probably want to map it before you get there. There's signage, but you can blow right past it if you're not careful. The secret is to turn east on 3800 South, just east of I-215. From there it's a straight shot. Be advised that there is a fee to enter the canyon. Truthfully, half the time I go up there the booth is empty and you can drive on by... so I wanna say it's like $2-3 or you can get an annual pass, but it's been a while since I paid it. One of the biggest pluses of the canyon is that it's dog friendly. Whereas the other major canyons around SLC don't even allow dogs, Millcreek allows them, and allows them off-leash access on odd days. Not like, weird days. But like, the odd (not even) days of the month. Some restrictions apply and it's really best to check it all out beforehand to avoid misunderstandings. On even days, it's all about mountain biking. It's a nice balance, but get your days right and double check! You'll also find some businesses up here. Most notably, Log Haven is a sweet spot up the canyon with killer ambiance. It's spendy, but it's nice. The Millcreek Inn is also up here, but it's more of an event space for rent. Nice, though. You'll also pass Boy Scout land and lots of private property. They have several camps up here for Cub and Boy Scouts. They've changed names over the years, except Camp Tracy. At least, it's been Camp Tracy for as long as I can remember. There are lots of hiking trails, places to picnic (administered by Salt Lake County Parks & Rec) and it's a swell place to cool off in the heat of summer. It feels a little more primitive than Big or Little Cottonwood Canyon. It's much smaller, and there are no towns up there or big commercial developments. Which is perhaps why I like it so much. read more

My cousins who live in SLC recommended this hike. It was a very short hike but really lovely. A bit difficult in several parts and turns due to snow and we didn't have chains under our shoes so we were sliding a bit but we enjoyed the hike thoroughly. The paths are very narrow so one has to be a little careful but we saw lot of people with their dogs with no problem. The views are simply incredible and breathtaking. This was our first hike with snow ever so it will be something to remember for a long time. Highly recommend for those who want to take a nice easy hike under 3 hours. read more

Warning.....this place does charge an exit fee which is cash only. It's an addictive place so the annual pass might be a good option too! I LOVE this this place! The canyon stretches over a 9 mile road that mixes trails, mountain paths and picnic areas. On odd numbered days you are allowed to have your dogs off leash on the trails. I would still recommend being careful because there are still bikers on the trails too. Located in the area is a wedding reception area and restaurant. The scenery is breathtaking and changes with the time of the day and season. Right now the trees are getting their first tinges of fall. read more

Wooded, some campgrounds, picnic areas and cooling stream. Minutes from the middle of town, and a great place to get cool and away from the city. Small fee as you leave the canyon to help with upkeep. Watch for the sign for the canyon on Wasatch Blvd, you can miss it easily. Parking easy, just drive up and park. read more

This is my favorite spot to hike in Salt Lake City! One of the best things about Millcreek Canyon is that the trails are off-leash on odd-numbered days, and so I can bring my dogs. It's been beautiful this month; I think that fall is one of the best times to go. The colors in the mountains are breathtaking. The trails we hike most frequently are Little Water and Grandeur Peak. Both have a lot of uphill walking, but aren't terribly long. Grandeur Peak, as the name implies, boasts some pretty amazing vistas. DON'T FORGET to bring $3 in cash. Unless you're a senior, then I think it's slightly cheaper. IF YOU DO FORGET, they're really nice about it. You'll feel guilty. The upper trails close forever (until May) on the first of November! I just moved to UT from CA and I had family here to visit. We hiked Desolation Trail. I am not an avid hiker but enjoy the outdoors. I am used to hikes that are up/down up/down this hike was 2.5miles up and then 2.5miles down. Running down was a lot of fun and easy, but going up (for me) was hard. The view was def worth it, but I have to admit there where times where I wanted to turn around. I would do this hike again...now that I know that there is a "reward" at the end...the great view and the run down. read more

I heard so many good thing about this Millcreek's hiking trails. Eventually, we came by for some fresh air and beautiful mountain view. However, all we got were view of dog poops and smell of dog poops cooking under the summer sun. The flies buzzed around the poop and then they would annoyingly buzz around the humans. It was just a pretty unpleasant hike. Dear irresponsible dog owners, quit giving all dog owners a bad name. read more

If you have a dog, this is a great place to take them. Millcreek canyon is great because it has many trails, picnic areas and I believe campgrounds for everyone to enjoy. They have awesome fire pit areas where you can set up a nice get together around the campfire and roast marshmallows. This is awesome for an all day into the night kind of activity (although this place does close from 10 pm - 8 am). The hiking trails are great. What I love best is that they are dog friendly so I can take my dog with me. Many other trails in Utah aren't dog friendly because they are near watersheds so it's nice to have a place where I can take my dog on a nice long walk. This canyon does get pretty busy during the warm seasons so get there early if you want a nice spot. Or if you are just hiking, realize that parking may be limited. The only downside I can really see is that you have to pay to come to this canyon. I can understand why because of the restrooms and such but still $3 per car isn't bad, but free would be nicer :) read more

There is a single use fee to use the canyon, or you can buy a yearly pass. Having grown up elsewhere, this seems a bit absurd to me, but I haven't acclimated to Utah politics yet. I guess you have to think of each canyon as its own little managed wilderness experience much like a state park. In any case, this is my go-to canyon for outings with the dog. read more

I have little pups (8ish lbs) who have very little experience in hiking (they hail from Atlanta, okay), but they loved it here and that made my heart happy. Views are pretty spectacular. P.S. I live about a mile due west of Millcreek Canyon and travel here often. I consider this not only one of the best parts about living in the Salt Lake Valley, but one of the finest natural amenities I have ever been to. I am a long-distance runner and one of my favorite things is to run along the many and varied trails in Millcreek Canyon. The smells, the sights, the foliage, the way that there are a thousand different shades of green combined with the colorful wildflowers, and the solitude are all fantastic. What a beautiful place! There are numerous hikes up this canyon and you can even take your dogs off leash on odd days. Most of the paths are shaded too (perfect for a hot summer day). I'm visiting from Northern Cal and was looking for a place to hike with my husband. I found Millcreek from yelpers. We stopped at the first trailhead we found. Rattlesnake?....... It was a nice tree covered trail. The downside was that we went on the day of mountain bikers. Sometimes the trail gets narrow and I was clinging to trees to get out of the way. Everyone was courteous to eachother, but still. I don't think I would do it again on an open mountain biking day. I think it's odd days of the month. The other downside was that they allow dogs. The actual dog thing isn't a problem. It's the poop on the trail that owners don't pick up. Kind of gross. All in all, it was nice to get out and into beautiful surroundings. read more

Great canyon for picnics, hikes and an adventure with your puppy. Dog Lake hiking trail is great and I love Porter Trail which is a paved road by 30 or so cabins and many little waterfalls. Church falls is a great picnic ground... great place to paddle in the water. read more

Millcreek is a great place to hike. You can take your dog here off leash on odd numbered days, which is great because many places in the SLC area do not allow dogs. Parking can be limited but you can generally park along side the road near the trail head. Because the area is well trafficked and at a lower elevation you can hike here year round. There is a $3 entrance fee which is a small price to pay for a area full of amazing hikes. read more

What a pleasant surprise. This jewel is an awesome hiking location. Plenty trails to choose from. The only thing I didn't like is that they had latrines for bathrooms. I'm all for being cost to nature but people can do that even better with the help of modern plumbing!! I guess the latrines here were as good as latrines can be but it was still gross.... My advise, do your bathroom business before you come for a hike!! And don't forget to get $3 in exact change to make the paying process faster! read more
