I am a big fan of the jalapeño hush puppies, I can have them all day long. We had the catfish (thin) with South Carolina grits, and garlic mash. This is my go-to bar. Most nights out in Charlottesville begin here. There's a wide range of people that come to Miller's. They probably have the widest selection of beer, wine, and mixed drinks anywhere in town. Anna and Jenna are my favorite bartenders. They always hook treat us well. Wandered in here with friends for a late afternoon lunch and were very pleasantly surprised! It's a bit of a hole in the wall, but the menu was pretty eclectic, including all day breakfast/brunch, Vegan/vegetarian options, salads, burgers and more. The waitress was extremely friendly and accommodating, including providing separate checks. We wanted to share 2 meals, and they divided the meals for us in the kitchen. This was one of the few lively places around the downtown mall at 10:00PM. I'm surprised this area is not bustling in the evenings, but there are a few fun spots. This is a somewhat famous dive due to the fact that Dave Matthews used to bartend here. It's a pretty small place and still has the stale smoke smell left over from the days when you could smoke in doors in Virginia. The prices were good and the people were interesting. They had a live band stuck in the corner of the place that added a cool feel to it, but there is just not much room to move around or get comfortable. Stop by for the nostalgia at least once, but I don't think I would recommend this for a regular hang out. read more

Had lunch here today while shopping in historic Charlottesville. The only reason I gave this place four stars was due to the wait for food. I was starving but I read the warning in the menu so I was aware. They have a very small kitchen so food takes time. The service was attentive and the food that comes out is very good. They do have decent drink specials and a very extensive bar. There were five of us. I had the jalapeño corn dogs with fries. Nice twist and just enough bite. Two full hot dogs per order. My daughter had the cheese steak. We decided to split our meals. The cheese steak was awesome. The steak tender and the cheese was melty cheesy goodness. The hubby had the Mouth of the South burger. It was quite the mouthful too. It came with pimento cheese and bacon and was stacked high with the fixins. He loved it. The other two teens at our table had chicken tenders, real white meat not pressed and were more like strips than tenders, and Pot stickers I was told these were tasty as well and the dipping sauce really good. I would recommend this place and will likely be back next time we visit C'ville. read more

I will not be returning to Miller's. I was there with a group of friends, a mixed crowd of men and women, and one of the men in our group went to the bar to order another round for the group. The bartender leaned over to him and said, "Hey man, do me a favor and tell your women they can't be here if they're not drinking." Most of the people in our group had gotten drinks, including myself (and I am a woman). There was a man in our group not drinking, and the bartender seemed not to feel a need to single out that man. We left immediately. I will not be returning to Miller's, and I caution women from going to Millers. read more

Miller's was recommended to me as Charlottesville's most user-friendly bar for regular people, and they don't disappoint. It tells you something about me that I had two PBR pints starting at eleven in the morning, and it tells you something about them that the drinks were served with a relaxed smile. Between the Black Keys Pandora station, multiple TV screens (with both ESPNs), table games, and the fact that smoking is allowed (mind you I'm talking about the third floor), let's just say that if bars were Hollywood starlets, Miller's would be a wholesome girl who'd developed an edge from some hard times, like Megan Fox circa the first Transformers. We went to Miller's on a Saturday night. It wasn't too busy, but the service was pretty slow. We ordered beers and then built our own burgers. Our waiter did not inform us that subbing fries for chips was an additional $3 per person. After adding toppings, my husband's chicken sandwich came out to a whopping $18. The food was fine, but definitely not worth the price. Our waiter never brought us the condiments we ordered, which may have been a good thing considering they also probably cost $3 a piece. read more

Big selling point of Miller's for me: the kitchen is open all night. They got an extra star just for that, since I've been learning lately that finding good food late at night isn't as easy as I'd like it to be. After catching a show at The Southern (this was a Saturday night, iirc), my friends and I wanted to grab a bite to eat before heading back to Lynchburg. We intended to go to Citizen Burger Bar, but their kitchen was already closed; the bartender there pointed us in the direction of Miller's and a couple other places that had their kitchens open late. When we found Miller's, we were pleased to find menus outside, so we could decide if they had food worth trying before going in and finding a seat. We liked what we saw, so we headed inside. There was a band playing that night (The Fustics) and the ground floor was pretty busy; one of my friends isn't too big on being crowded, so for her sake we went to one of the booths on the landing that leads to the upper floor. There, we weren't crowded by strangers, could still hear the band clearly, and could hear each other without having to yell. They have an impressive beer list, and while I wasn't drinking that night, I did find a couple drinks on their list that I took note of to try and track down at some point, including Potter's Cider from Charlottesville, which is great if you like a really dry cider. Between us, we ordered a blackened chicken sandwich and a cheeseburger. Both came out without much delay despite the bustle downstairs and both were good. Neither was something to make a trip to C-ville for, but if you're out late and end up at Miller's because you can't find another open kitchen (like we did), you won't be at all disappointed with what you get. Solid food, especially since they could really slack off and rest in the fact that you can't really go anywhere else to bring them business. I don't remember exactly what we paid, but I thought it was reasonable for the amount and quality of food that we received. The service wasn't anything special, but we didn't have any problems with our server either. Bottom line: Seems good for drinks/music, and the food is all right when you're out of options, but I can't imagine it'd be hard to find comparable quality food elsewhere if you're not eating late. read more

I've been to Miller's 3 times now for lunch, and while I am no Dave Mathew's fan, Miller's delivers where it counts, with their food. I have not eaten inside or been to Miller's after dark, so my experience is limited to enjoying lunch outside on the mall. As I've noted in past reviews, I love a great sandwich and Miller's does not disappoint in that department. I've also had several of their salads and have nothing but praise. Rounding out the trifecta is the fact that Miller's has a first rate beer list that includes many A players from around the country. If you decide to go, make sure you are hungry because the portions are hearty. Service hasn't always been top shelf, but close enough to average that I have no major gripes. Will definitely eat at Miller's again. read more

A Cville tradition. Love that their kitchen stays completely open until they close at 2am. Food is pretty good, wait staff is always friendly, and their outdoor seating with the fountain and large tree coverage for shade is one of my favorites on the mall. Lots of (bottled) beers to choose from and I think it's funny they had complete descriptions of their mixed drinks - down to every ingredient and a graphic of what kind of glass it comes in. I suppose it's helps for the younger, inexperienced college (likely already drunk crowd) who wants to order funny drinks like 'sex on the beach' or a 'fuzzy navel'. Not knocking it, though. Atmosphere, great for a divey place on the mall. Food, not bad---in fact the tacos were decent; however, cooking tortillas does wonders (as opposed to taking them straight from the package and filling them---just a tip from a part-time Texican). Service, average/acceptable/prompt. My issue---I didn't have enough cash to cover bill + tip. So, I paid with my card and left cash as a tip---writing "CASH" on the tip line. My card has been overcharged (note, NOT pending, but final). No response (yet) from Millers---so far they seem agreeable and I will update my review and star-rating (if applicable) upon resolution. read more

Stopped in after spending the day @ Monticello, in desperate need of a beer and sustenance. An extensive local beer menu was greatly assisted the former and a delicious thick burger cooked to order benefitted the latter. I had grilled asparagus as a side rather than yer traditional fries or onion rings and I wish I'd hadn't. Nothing special. Went to this place as one of the few in the area open and serving a late afternoon lunch. We sat outside on the patio which was great on a sunny day. The service was good and a they had a decent selection of beer and drinks. We had the fried green tomato appetizer which was okay but needed to be cooked longer to soften the tomatoes slightly. The oyster poboy was good and so were the burgers. My friend had the tomato and mozzarella salad which was okay but again the tomatoes just were not ripe and lacked flavor. We went to Miller's for brunch on a Sunday. I was pleasantly surprised. They offered a variety of unique egg dishes along with French toast and more common breakfast dishes. Popular dishes from their everyday menu were also available, such as chicken and waffles (the honey butter hot sauce that comes on the side with the chicken and waffles is delicious)! The french toast was decent and the home fries had grilled onions and peppers mixed in which gave a nice flavor. I came here with my husband, sister, brother, and parents for a late lunch. The atmosphere was fabulous (I love the New Orleans theme going on upstairs) and the menus are very well designed. Our server was excellent and none of us ever had an empty glass. When I ordered a veggie burger and a side salad, he was quick to mention that the side salad came with bacon and ask if I would like it removed. He was one of the best waiters I have had in a long time. Everyone in my party enjoyed their meal (chicken tenders, steak and cheese, fried green tomatoes, and two burgers) and my husband said his burger was the best burger he had ever had. I ordered the veggie burger and while the bun was toasted to perfection the burger itself left a lot to be desired. Veggie burgers usually crumble but this one fell apart more quickly than I have encountered before. There was an avocado something on the top with a brownish tinge that seemed unhealthy. It tasted off to me and I think the veggie burger quality would have been improved by its removal. My side salad, however, was perfection itself. It is rare to see such a delicious salad in a bar. After we finished our entrees, my mother wanted to order the sundae she had seen on the menu. We ordered three for the table to share and were favorably impressed. It consisted of creamy peanut butter and strawberry jelly in between two warm waffles, two scoops of vanilla ice cream on top, surrounded by banana and chocolate sauce. I highly recommend it and may come back just for the sundae. It was the most delicious sundae I have ever had the privilege of eating. Overall, it was a good experience. Visited Miller's with my significant other, mom, sister, and friend. We sat outside in the outdoor space on a Friday night and it was amazing! I ordered the chicken and waffles. I liked the chicken because of its crispness. The waffle is a fried waffle and I hated it. It was heavy and felt like pimples would pop up everywhere if I indulged. Sooo... needless to say I didn't eat the waffle. The AWESOME thing is the waitress told me about the fried waffle in advance but I was being optimistic. LIFE FAIL. Because I was still hungry I helped my mom EAT her delicious Philly Cheesesteak and I ate some of my significant others fish and fries which were also tasty! Loved the energy of the space and the helpful staff! Next time I'll order the Philly cheesesteak! read more

What Graceland is to Elvis fans, Miller's is to DMB loyalists. They could have sprinkled rat poison on my food and I still would have given them 5 stars. The food here was surprisingly good though. I ordered the jambalaya and it came with a great tasting house salad that left me more than full. It was really surreal coming in here and visualizing Dave here in the early 90's pouring drinks to supplement his income as he began to lay the foundation on what has been a legendary career. Don't expect Miller's to be touristy with posters and memorabilia. This is what gives the place it's charm. It is a hole in the wall, cozy atmosphere that pumps out live music in the evenings located right on Main St. A great spot to grab a couple buds, have a few drinks, and tell a few stories. This place is probably only decent if you were to just get a drink with your friends because it sure isnt a place I would go for food. The food is blah and the service sucks. The bathrooms smell as if there is a sewage back up, it's greasy and dirty. The waitresses don't know what an appetizer is and when it's supposed to be served since they brought the appetizer and lunch all out together. We only saw our waitress when she came to take our order and give us the bill. No checking in between to see if we needs refills, or napkins or anything else you may need with your meal. When our order came up I asked the sub waitress why our appetizers are being served with the meal since we asked for that first and she ever so kindly ignored me and left. Like I said if you want just drinks this might be an ok place because it might be the only thing this dive can do half way right. read more

I was guided to Millers by my sister who suffers from a severe DMB addiction. Apparently Dave was a bartender there and used to play frequently. I popped in for a beer and lunch while I was in town for a wedding. I was promptly greeted by Sean the bartender, a chill local guy who seemingly ran the place and struck up a nice convo with some stories about Dave and their popular Thursday night jams. I ordered a beer (20oz PBR draft during happy hour) and the plate of the Memphis hot chicken. The beer was perfectly poured and just tasted better from an old tap like at Millers. The hot chicken was suprisingly delicious as well. Definitely a step up from standard pub tenders. They use big pieces of boneless chicken breast, deep fried and doused in seasoning and spices. Served with a huge serving of seasoned fries, it was definitely enough food for one, maybe two people. After I ate I had another beer and chatted with the bartender and some locals. I Definitely recommend popping in during happy hour or Thursday nights for the live music. read more
