Here I am driving my 1979 Bus east over the Sonora Pass and really enjoying life. Just saw good friends in the Bay Area and now taking in the beauty north of Yosemite. I stop in Lee Vining for fuel - and what happens? The bus won't start. Of course, it won't start. I'm stuck 350 miles from home. At least its summer and not snowing.... After several attempts to self-diagnose the problem, and a recommendation from the Lee Vining Shell station (a great guy named Shelley), the bus was towed to Bishop and taken to Sierra German where I eventually met Tim Miller. He took interest immediately and noted some problems with fuel seepage. Being the only noted VW mechanic for some hundreds of miles around, he was busy with work - and the pandemic wasn't helping. Anyway, he traced the main problem to a frayed wire to the cylinder head sensor and also a bad electric connection to the air box. He noted a few other things "that should be taken care of" too. All in all, the experience was top notch and my bus came alive and made it home. Bishop is a great small town in a beautiful part of California - so the pace there is understandably different than the bigger urban areas of the State. I read some of the other yelp reviews before heading to Sierra German. That said, Tim was responsive to my plight and is an expert I'd seek out again if I'm ever passing by within a 200 mile radius of Bishop. OK, so I don't like to tear anyone down or their business... However, this man came Recommended to us and is suppose to do reliable work. All I'm going to say is that he will tell you your vehicle will be ready in a few days with parts ordered and then after he gets the part, it will take him 3 or 4 more days to start working on the vehicle and then days to finish. Finally .. we are physically waiting on him to finish so we can go back home. Why couldn't he just give us worst case scenario with truthful waiting times instead of keeping us hanging on?? My transmission died on the way up to Yosemite so I had my Westy towed over to Sierra German auto. Tim there was amazing. unfortunately, had to have a transaxle built in Oregon and shipped down, but everything went as planned and my Westley was back on the road running tiptop. This place is to car repair what Neverland Ranch is to childcare. Your vehicle ain't coming out right, if it ever comes out at all. Let me explain... This past summer on August 21st, our BMW broke down on the highway and got towed to the only German auto specialist for hundreds of miles. We call the shop in the morning and are treated to a delightful conversation with Tim Miller -- owner of Sierra German Auto, a man who treats his customers like they're a Lego he just stepped on and who's most recent memory of happiness was watching Chicago cops beat up hippies at the DNC in 1968. He has never let another human being finish a sentence and ain't about to start today, so he interrupts me six words in by barking into the phone, saying that it'll be at least a week before he can look at a vehicle. There's nowhere else to take the car, so we leave it with him. He proceeds to hold the car hostage for the next 70 days. And never lifts a finger to fix it. And lies to us every time we call about it. Always saying "I'll look at it next week." Meanwhile, we're back at home -- begging, borrowing and Ubering to get ourselves and our toddler around the city, praying that this week will be different, hoping against hope that maybe -- just maybe -- this sentient wad of tobacco spit will finally do his job. He never did. So after two and a half months of this, we gave up. We cobbled together the resources to get it towed to the nearest shop, over 200 miles away. Again, to put this in perspective: entire vehicles can be built from scratch in the time it took Tim Miller to not fix our car. Tim and Zach are competent mechanics. Don't expect them to be at all friendly, polite, communicative or in any way helpful. I would actually use 'hostile' to describe the interactions I had. I had a no start Sprinter issue. I called around the bishop area and quickly felt that Sierra German was the only place to go. It was determined to be leaking fuel lines leading to no-start. They fixed the problem but I wish I could have taken my van literally anywhere else. As it was, I was a captive audience as I was stuck in Bishop. They replaced a headlight for me and charged me a half-hour labor for this without any discussion/request/authorization. After waiting for over a week to get the hell out of Bishop and return to family, I was too irritated to complain. I do, however, think it was shady of them to charge me 55$ labor (1/2 hour) for a lightbulb replacement. I routinely change these myself, and it takes me about 2 minutes. All in all, they did fix my van. I do feel I was jerked around a bit and left wishing I had the ability the find alternate diesel services willing to work on Sprinters nearby. I would recommend if you can drive your vehicle anywhere else it would be worth it. read more

Just after successfully navigating Sonora Pass, with dismay I discovered I could no longer shift gears on my 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon, and the clutch pedal went to the floor. I made it into Bridgeport and then had the van towed to Tim down in Bishop, feeling relieved that there was an expert Vanagon mechanic within reach of my 100 miles towing allowance from AAA. I was a bit nervous about all the negative reviews here, but I found Tim to be warm and helpful, friendly and communicative. He seemed excited to work on my van, but warned me that he had "ten cars ahead" of mine. Perhaps of note is that I never met him: the van was dropped off by tow truck, and a week later I picked it up after hours. So our interaction was by phone. And I wasn't in a hurry. Tim charged a fair price, and I enjoyed the confidence of having an experienced Vanagon mechanic work on my Vanagon. I would definitely go to him again should the need arise. My van was towed to him on the morning of Monday 5/23. By the next day, he had looked at the van, made a diagnosis (failure of the clutch slave cylinder), and ordered a replacement part. On Sunday 5/29 (yes, the Sunday of Memorial day weekend), he called to say it was ready. The next day I came out to get it. His lot is packed with cars, so the quick pickup was appreciated. read more

Was driving from LA to Mammoth for the 4th of july holiday. My brakes felt very weak the entire trip up so I decided to stop at the last mechanic before we headed up the mountain. That giu said he couldn't work on my 1972 vw bus and sent me to the next shop down the road, that shop was booked up for the week they said (yeah I laughed and left) so I go to the next shop and that shop also did not want to check my brakes, they told me to go to the German auto mechanic a few blocks down. Now I know what you are thinking "why didnt you go there first?" Well I didnt see them and I should have. Once I got there it didnt look like they were busy, but that still didnt keep one of the mechanics from getting under the bus in the dirt to check it out. Although he did some tightening of my brake adjustment he recommended I wait for the boss to get back..so I did. The boss came back put the bus on the lift and immediately started to diagnose and fix the problem. He managed to bleed my brakes and refill the brake fluid reservoir which fixed the problem. What an amazing guy. He is so willing to help with anything. He was able to diagnose my problem from on the phone and many miles away. He came up with a perfect solution and did not charge me a dime. Snap judgments come from ignorance...I have never been to this mans business, But if you take a moment to put things into perspective you can have a better understanding of a situation. If these reviewers come from the city they may not understand small town life. They are frustrated because their car broke and their egos make them blame the one person who actually has the knowledge to help them. Insulting his dog and his employee..wow. Of course there is going to be an old dog sitting there. It is a small town..they do that. The old employee gets insulted too? Wow that shows the character of the person that wrote that review. If someone hires an old person, does that not show that he is compassionate and will go the extra mile for another human being? Didn't get the work done at the shop due to personal finances. This is my experience so far. I will be back. Ended up at this shop by chance as I assume many reader will as well. On my way home my "very reliable" '84 VW Vanagon Westfalia left me on the side of the road with a none responsive clutch (clutch not engaging). It was a Sunday (of course everyone is closed). Tow driver picked me up and said this is the only German auto shop in 200 miles. "He is a little hard at times but really knows his stuff, you just have to be patient". Having really no choice this is where I ended up. Monday came around and I waited and waited and no one arrived. Then suddenly a car pulled in and said I'll find Tim (the owner). Around 10:30am roles in Tim. Not a big smile, maybe even a little grumpy but treated me with a lot of respect. He looked at my car and said, cant work on it today due to other things. Gave me some best and worst case scenarios and some prices. Not cheap, but a lot of work so I think probably reasonable. I checked online and Tim was on par with what others have paid. I'm in school I explained, and don't have that type of money. Tim offered countless options: leaving the car for a few weeks, pay him a little to inspect the transmission, rebuilding himself, buying rebuilt somewhere else. I had to tow the car away until I find a job because any repair is going to cost me more than I can afford and leaving a car for a few months at a shop is not smart. Tim and his friend helped me push the car on a trailer and sent me on my way with a handshake. Keep in mind I was never charged even though my car and I sat there for two whole days. I've read some of the comments on Yelp and must agree with some of the remarks, good and bad. Tim is a knowledgable guy, is running a business on his own. These guys totally came to my rescue. A couple of friends and I drove up from San Diego for one last snowboard trip of the season during Memorial Day weekend. On the way back, after stopping to get some jerkey in Bishop, my engine was steaming and noticed a pool of coolant under the car. Uh oh. Drove a little further into town and my temp gauge started to sky rocket. Great, it's Sunday evening on a holiday weekend. I'm screwed. Started frantically calling every auto shop in Bishop with all of them closed. I finally call Miller's and he's there and answers! PLUS they're going to be open on Monday, Memorial Day! Whoa lucky! I get it towed over there and the following day they look and see it's a busted coolant hose and replaced it and topped off the coolant. They were there when we needed them and they never tried to gouge me (knowing I was stuck). What more can you want from a mechanic? read more

If I had seen his review, it might have saved me from a nightmarish experience, when which you can read about in my original review. His experience is a virtual mirror of mine. Avoid this place this place like the plague. Even if you can get someone on the phone, it will take them weeks to even look at your car. You're better off taking it anywhere but here. Our car broke down in mammoth lakes and we had it towed to the only place around that could diagnose a problem with a newer Volkswagon. Several days after the car was delivered to this place, we were finally able to get someone on the phone. We were informed that they had to fix all the other cars in line before they would even tell us what was wrong with our car. So essentially our car will just sit there for weeks before they will tell us if they can even fix it or not. I talked to a local about my experience and she said, "oh yeah, they've had my car for weeks with no end in sight". We're now going to be forced to have it towed to the nearest dealership in Palmdale and rent a car to return home while we get it fixed by a reputable repair shop. What a horror story! read more

Did a timing belt job in a jiffy. Usually it takes about a week to get the parts to replace the timing belt in a Volkswagen Jetta, but Tim and his secondary got it done faster than I would have expected (after reading the other reviews). I dropped it off on a Friday and he had it running nicely by Tuesday. On top of that, he noticed that my transmission didn't have any oil in it, which could have been disastrous. I never asked him to look for other problems, but he caught this one before it destroyed a $4000 component. Very thankful for this local mechanic. He's the only one in the Eastern Sierras who can work on a German car with confidence. I tried TJ's Firing line a few miles down the road and, having not worked on any German cars before, she said, "Sure, I can do it. Average job." After a week, the parts came in and she called me apologizing that she needed a "special tool" that was expensive. I think she just lied to me and didn't have confidence to do the job. Tim is a very knowledgable mechanic. He thinks he's far from "the best", but for a small town he knows far more than your average mechanic and goes the extra mile to make sure everything is tuned well. I'd trust him with my Porsche, even if it does take longer than average shops. Oh, and the only reason he seems to like locals more is because he gets to warm up to them and vice versa. Don't come to this shop with a stupid problem and expect him to know what it is right away. That's not how the mechanic business works -- you can't be ignorant all the time. read more

My VW Tiguan died while I was skiing up at Mammoth over the winter. I had AAA tow it to Sierra German Auto in Bishop, as the closest location that could service a German vehicle. They were able to look at my car same day and were friendly and helpful. While the engine was shot and car dead due to VW's engine issue on that model, I still really appreciated their help and would recommend their services. read more

I'm not from bishop so was a little worried about being stranded with a car problem. I actually couldn't believe my luck that there was a German auto repair right in town (and nowhere else for 600 miles!!). Anyway the guy is pretty busy but managed to squeeze me in and finish my car in about 4-5 days. It's an older Audi, and as I suspected the front left cv joint was bad. Charged me a reasonable amount and was extremely knowledgable. Gave me some nice tips on future things I should look out for. Brought a car here with a minor drip leak ....ran great the drip was new so lets get it fixed. After TIM messed with it was pouring fluid like a river. I know it can be a little unsettling to have only one German auto repair option in the area but these guys will take care of you. They fixed my car ($27 in parts plus labor and coolant) and even made arrangements for me pick it up on the weekend (they are normally closed on weekends). Keep in mind that it may take a few days to get parts shipped in; I rented a car for the week and drove home with the rental. read more

Don't take these guys as honest mechanics. Not only did they try and charge me an insane amount of money for a simple job. They quoted me it would take the mechanic more then triple the time it took a local dealership mechanic to do. They prey on tourists and even the locals. I would never trust these guys to give me an honest diagnostics or a truthful fix. I took my business to a local dealership and the job was done in 45 minutes and $180 dollars less then what German autos was asking. Terrible at returning phone calls. read more

Please please avoid at all costs. My car spent 6 weeks in this guys shop. I lived in mammoth and Tim said to bring my car down and he could look at it. He didn't tell me that it would take over a week just to have him do that. I spent the next 6 agonizing weeks wondering when I was going to get my car back. Phone calls barely returned and the bill continued to climb. $3000 and 6 weeks later I finally got my car back only to find some of his repairs were done incorrectly. Tim just finished installing a rebuilt engine in my Westfalia and did an excellent job! I can tell he was thorough and really knows VWs inside and out. I felt he was reasonable, honest, and straightforward with me in advising me on several choices I had to make. He showed me worn parts that he recommended I replace, and his rates were better than another estimate I got. In fact, I drove all the way from Santa Cruz to have Tim do the work because I knew it would be done right! It took a little longer than he thought, but that's because he found a couple of important things that needed to be fixed while he was doing the engine and some other repair work, and I didn't mind at all--after all, he did a major job for me and took the time to explain what he thought needed to be done. I got a new red top optima battery recently and it was a great deal after looking at what stores sell them for... He was working on a Porsche Cayenne Turbo which is a crazy complicated car, tore engine down fixed it and I saw it drive off to happy customer... Traveling northward on 395 near Lone Pine the clutch pedal of my 2007 Saab Aero went to the floor, wouldn't come back, and I ended up with no way to shift gears. Not a good situation, being in a fairly remote area with minimal services with a car that is no longer made and parts becoming more scarce. A call to the local shop in Big Pine confirmed my fears, they only work on domestics, however, if I could get the car to Miller's Sierra German Auto in Bishop they may be able to help. I called Mr. Miller, the owner, and he agreed to take a look at it for me but also warned that if parts were needed it may take awhile to source them. Billie's Towing and Recovery from Bishop came to Lone Pine and picked us up along with the car and we were there in an hour (Hats off to Billie for the good service too). The following day Miller called me and said my car was fixed! The hydraulic line that operates the clutch slave cylinder had taken a gulp of air somehow so they bled the system and topped it off with fluid and I was good to go. So here's what you need to know: Miller is a master certified mechanic with over 30 years experience with European cars and knows what he's doing. He wasn't scared off because I was driving a Saab. He could have sold me a bill of goods but didn't, he was very honest and did excellent work on a fast schedule so we were able to resume our road trip. What could have been the end of the line for the Saab turned out to be a $167.00 fix thanks to Miller. I cannot recommend this shop highly enough. read more

the most rude person I have ever have to deal with, his customer service is the worst and he did not even provide me with a diagnose to my vehicle because he had other customers that he preferred to give priority to. After 5 days he didn't know what was wrong with the car and suggested that maybe it would cost me $1500 to fix it or to take it elsewhere. I do not recommend this place at all!!! read more

I think the owner- this Tim guy has some weird inferiority complex going on or something. While on our way to Boise we had a check engine light turn on so we stopped in Bishop for the night, thinking we should get it checked out before we try to get back on the road. As this place was the only one advertising that they handle foreign cars, we went straight there. My first impression was apprehension, there were at least 15 cars in the lot in various stages of disrepair some looked like they had been there for months, as I was just looking for someone to put a scanner on my car and tell me what code it threw out, I wasn't too concerned. Until I walked into the office no one there but a miserable looking dog. I say hellooo anybody out there? Three times and a fossil shows up. Yes? He asks and I tell him my story, he says wait until Tim gets off the phone. A little while later his majestic highness Tim shows up with a scowl on his face, he is wearing a USAF shirt so I am excited thinking at least I will be dealing with a professional here, WRONG! First he admonishes me for not reading the owners manual then lectures me on driving all the way to Bishop with a check engine light on and I have not had the opportunity to tell him that I just need someone to tell me what code the scanner will tell so I can decide if it's worth repairing here or in a dealership. Anyways Tim says that he will charge me $47 to read the scanner code and he will do it after lunch so I have to wait for him for a couple of hours. Really Tim? a couple of hours for a diagnostic test that takes less than 2 minutes? Yeah says the fossil who acts as Tims sidekick we've been swamped today with 5 people. Gosh 5 whole people! Needless to say I drove the hell out of that place took Route 6 into Nevada and guess what... I stopped for lunch at a local diner asked the waitress if there was a mechanic in town, she called her boyfriend who brought his scanner, hooked it up, gave me the code and I bought the faulty part at the nearest auto parts shop. My car was fixed and purring in less time than it would have taken His highness to come look at it! Seriously, someone needs to tell this guy that he is just a mechanic in a hick town. Get over yourself buddy, things don't work that way in the REAL world, you may be a big deal in a one horse town like Bishop but to the rest of the world you are just another tool man who sucks at his job. read more

Had the check engine light come on and a loss of power as we approached Bishop in our Sprinter RV on a Sunday afternoon. We checked several places in town and were referred to Tim at Sierra German Auto. He was in but closing up for the day and told us to show up at 8am on Monday. When we arrived there were several customers and vehicles clogging up his shop entrance. He does not tolerate the rude, the impatient, the demanding, or those who have victimized themselves by poor planning. When our turn came he quickly diagnosed the problem (a part had been improperly installed by a huge shop in Denver a month earlier). He gave us options, let us make our own decision, showed us his work, and meticulously wrote out the OBD codes for future reference. He also replaced a missing screw on a rattling grill and suggested we get a particular coolant at the Kmart down the road. Best of all he charged us a very fair price. I have a number of cars, and each has been to any number of mechanics. Rarely have I come across an establishment and proprietor as solid as Tim, at Miller's Sierra German Auto. He was extremely knowledgeable, with terrific bedside manner, and affordable. Further, because I know my car very well, I was impressed by how honest he was. When you are just passing through, as I was, you can get taken sometimes. An unscrupulous mechanic isn't worried about repeat business, and can take the opportunity to gouge you. Not this guy. Driving the 87 Vanagon from Reno to W Texas the brake light switch failed. Stopped in Miller's Sierra German Auto along the road and met Tim. Within 15 minutes he was gone, looking for my parts, without explanation. No parts in town so he ordered them and the next day he fixed it within a half hour after UPS delivered them. Tim knows VW's better than anyone I've met since my first 67 bus. He is in his own zen space and it works, at his own pace, which is mine: as fast as possible. Superb work with urgency. wow, was i in a jam... and miller's sierra german auto saved the day (along with my '99 audi avant wagon)! after being stranded in mammoth (on a sunday when all auto shops are closed to make matters worse) with my car gushing oil out the bottom, i left a damsel in distress message to millers, the only german auto mechanic within miles. tim the (owner) promptly returned my call first thing monday and took my car in straight off the tow truck once it arrived. i was so incredibly thankful to have had the expertise of someone like tim to quickly get under the car to diagnose the problem, repair the oil coolant seal, oil filter and provide some very helpful tips from someone who had seen this problem many times before. this could have been a FAR worse scenario if the car had been drive even 1/2 a mile more it its state. i can't thank tim enough for his knowledge and straightforward assessment. i left there with a very fair bill and my confidence restored in mechanics. :) THANKS AGAIN, TIM!! 5 STARS!! read more
