I brought my Audi in to Shorty's for a routine service and to see if Rob could help me out with the catalytic converter codes I'd been running. The Audi mechanics wanted to replace the catalytic converter and the o2 sensor, which would've cost several thousands of dollars. Rob was super honest and upfront with me about Audis not being Shorty's bread and butter, but that he could help by giving it a diagnostic, figure out what things needed attention, and decide if it was time for me to shop around for another car. In the end, he recommended that I shouldn't default to replacing the cat or the sensor and hypothesized that it was a vacuum leak, also putting together a list of priority items--which Nicole explained in detail--for my independent euro car mechanic in San Francisco to go through and replace with Audi parts. My mechanic in the city read Rob's report and agreed with everything, remarking at how thorough it was. It turns out, the car did indeed have a cracked vacuum hose. He used Rob's notes to fix all the other little things that needed attention, and now I'm back to having a perfectly running car with 160K miles on it. It's really nice to have a shop out here that can pinch hit for this kind of troubleshooting and, even if they prefer not to get into some things themselves, provide a real honest and detailed diagnosis of the likely causes and solutions are. We're lucky to have them.

They just earned a new customer! They were very knowledgeable on the phone and instilled confidence immediately. They said they could take a look at my car if I brought it by. They ended up keeping it and I got it back in two days! Shorty is very knowledgeable and explained to me everything that he did and why. There is nothing wrong with my former mechanic. But a couple of weeks is a long time to wait. They were just so above And beyond on my expectations at Shorty's. I'll never think twice about heading there again.

From long distance I easily communicated via phone and text with Jesus for over just can hour or so. It was all fast, straight forward, provided OTD numbers, no BS, and they had the best price. No add-ons, no gimmicks. Drove down to their nice 'small town' dealership 4 days later, and Nicole, an owner, had us thru the paperwork in 15 minutes. No slick salesman, or finance people, just normal, good folks, running an awesome car buying experience. What a find, will highly recommend them to friends!

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the rest of the service department. Maybe oil changes and routine maintenance are their specialty. But when it came to diagnosing the check engine light on my 2006 Prius, they completely missed the mark. My Prius threw a check engine light while I was on a road trip up Highway 395. I had it towed to Perry Motors. They said they fixed it, but thankfully I took it for a test drive before leaving because the check engine light came right back on. I got charged a diagnostic fee - fair enough. They couldn't diagnose the problem and kept insisting it was an oil issue. The problem? I'd already had the oil changed at another Toyota dealer before the trip, so I knew that wasn't it. To make matters worse, another service manager actually told me, "It's OK to drive with the check engine light on--we do it all the time." I found that advice pretty disturbing  I finally took my car to J&S Automotive, where Juan Santana worked his magic. Juan is a true car whisperer--thorough, intuitive, and someone who genuinely cares about getting to the root of the problem instead of guessing. More than 400 miles later, my Prius hasn't missed a beat.  Moreover he did not charge me a diagnostic fee and took me in right away despite it being the 4th of July weekend His shop is busy and plastered with incredible reviews and I can see why he is fondly known as Saint Juan Santana - patron saint of car troubles on 395! Would I recommend Perry Motors? Sure, for basic maintenance like oil changes and routine services that follow the handbook. For real diagnostic work? I'd skip Perry and head straight to J&S Automotive.

I stop in Lee Vining for fuel - and what happens? The bus won't start. Of course, it won't start. I'm stuck 350 miles from home. At least its summer and not snowing.... After several attempts to self-diagnose the problem, and a recommendation from the Lee Vining Shell station (a great guy named Shelley), the bus was towed to Bishop and taken to Sierra German where I eventually met Tim Miller. He took interest immediately and noted some problems with fuel seepage. Being the only noted VW mechanic for some hundreds of miles around, he was busy with work - and the pandemic wasn't helping. Anyway, he traced the main problem to a frayed wire to the cylinder head sensor and also a bad electric connection to the air box. He noted a few other things "that should be taken care of" too. All in all, the experience was top notch and my bus came alive and made it home. Bishop is a great small town in a beautiful part of California - so the pace there is understandably different than the bigger urban areas of the State. I read some of the other yelp reviews before heading to Sierra German. That said, Tim was responsive to my plight and is an expert I'd seek out again if I'm ever passing by within a 200 mile radius of Bishop. On the wide, open road that is California and Nevada, Tim's shop is now on my list of reliable mechanics.

All I'm going to say is that he will tell you your vehicle will be ready in a few days with parts ordered and then after he gets the part, it will take him 3 or 4 more days to start working on the vehicle and then days to finish. Finally .. we are physically waiting on him to finish so we can go back home. Why couldn't he just give us worst case scenario with truthful waiting times instead of keeping us hanging on??
