Let me "pat" Mills Fence on the back...and here is why. We have a 3 acre grass area that we wanted fenced in, 6 feet high, to allow our 4 large dogs to run around in without having to worry about them getting loose, and either being lost or hit by a car. We contacted three fence company, two were the "big boys" companies, the "famous" fence companies, the third was the Mills Fence company in Glastonbury, owned by the "gentle giant" Tom Mills. The quotes came in, the first one was absurd, the second one, not much better...then we opened the third quote, the one from Mr.Mills, and we were elated to find that there actually is an honest person in the fence business. The quote from Mr. Mills was $5984.00 lower than the first quote, and $6188.00 lower than the second quote...and for the EXACT same fence, high quality fence, just as we asked for. Wait, there's more...the first two companies both told us that the job was so big that it could take 2 to 3 weeks to complete...well, Mills Fence came in and did the entire job, flawlessly, including a super clean-up, so nice that you could not see one blemish anywhere in the entire area. The even more amazing part is that his workers were beyond polite, and they never even blinked, worked ever single minute of every day and COMPLETED the entire job...in 5 days...yes, you're reading this correctly. Mill fence saved us roughly $6000.00 on the same exact high quality fence and many, many days to complete the job. Excuses, excuses, excuses. Took several calls for Tom to come out for an estimate, he would say, I'll be there this afternoon and would not show up. Then once I contracted him(March) , it took several weeks and he claimed the supplier sent the wrong fence. Finally installed the fence mid-may. One side, which has a slope, was installed with a gap underneath that I could fit under And the side with the gate was cockeyed. When I called to ask him to fix, I was told the ground wasn't flat, seriously?? Who has a flat, level yard? if I did, I wouldn't have needed a professional to install it. His step son came by to fix but showed up without any tools, said he'd be back the next day, at 2:30, to fix. Never showed, never called. When I called Tom again, he said,"boy, you have a lot of problems for a small job" really?? If it had been installed correctly, I wouldn't have any problems at all! would NOT recommend read more

I contracted them to put a 6' privacy fence arouind my backyard and pool. Most importantly, over the past year since the fence has been up, one section fell apart every time it was windy outside. Mills came about times, reassembled it, but did nothing to actually fix it, as it continued to give me trouble through the winter. In the spring, after calling him a number of times, and getting numerous promises and/or excuses, nothing happened. Finally, the neighbor was putting up a fence as well, and I spoke to the people doing her fence. They came in and actually fixed the section. Some two weeks before that I had left my final message for Mills, essentially saying that I was about to pay someone else to fix the fence, and then I would find all the places where he is listed and warn others. I had a great experience with Tom and his awesome team of guys. Tom comes in at a reasonable price, is personable, down to earth, professional and on time. In fact, Tom showed up 3 weeks before the promised install date. the fence went up quickly despite my neighbors being a pain about property lines and me being a pain about changing my mind on material, placement and length. Like others have stated, Tom makes all kinds of promises. He doesn't show up when he says he will, has a list of excuses on why he didn't, doesn't answer phone calls or texts, and when he did show up to fix a panel that is falling into my neighbors yard (that he put up) "didn't bring and of the necessary tools with with him". Promised to come back and haven't heard from him since. I'm hiring someone else to fix his work. Wish I had paid a little more and gone with a more reputable company. read more

Unreliable. I called the owner five times to arrange a time for him to come out to estimate a job. He promised he'd come over but never showed and never called say he couldn't make it. When I called back he made up some excuse but never apologized or explained why he didn't show. It's amazing they stay in business. read more

I have a nice fence on my back property line now and I'm happy about it. Getting to this point however was somewhat annoying and difficult. I compared two local fence installers and Tom came in with a cheaper price. A fence is a fence so I went with Tom. He came by to provide the quote and quickly began gossiping about my neighbors and their family, pointed out all of the fantastic work he had done in my neighborhood, and told me that I'd have a fence installed within the month. We did have horrible weather this year so I'll cut him a little slack, but the fact that I had to track him down three times was not impressive. And when he did call me it was to complain that another customer was mad at him for ordering the wrong fence. He was really calling to find out if I wanted the other guy's fence. During this conversation I had to remind him that we were now 6 weeks past my expected installation and I needed him there within the week otherwise I was ditching him. All in all - it's done and I'm happy it's over. I'm glad I was able to support local business. Tom is a nice guy but I could have done without the gossip and excuses. read more

I had a situation with my dog where I had to have a fence installed, and installed FAST. I called & asked for as quick an estimate as they could give me. When Tommy came out, he was prepared & provided me a quote that day. Then, I called Wed 12/21, explained my situation, and asked how quickly they could install the fence. Friday, 12/23 Tommy & crew were at my house installing the fence posts. Then, they showed up Tues, 12/26 & installed the fencing itself & gate! I've never experienced a contractor that heard, pretty much a plea for help - and delivered in spades like this. I was flat out amazed. While I can't promise you the same quick turnaround that they provided me, that they were so responsive - and did such a high-quality job so fast! - says a lot about what they do, how they do it & how they feel about their customers. I've never experienced service like this from a contractor. While I certainly don't ding a contractor for unforeseen situations or scheduling issues that cause delays, I feel it is really important to give credit where credit is due.
