I was really excited to try Minami after hearing they had interesting plant-based sushi options. From the website: "Every roll is a celebration of nature's bounty. Each set within this collection is a careful curation of flavors and textures that will enchant vegans and vegetarians alike, as well as entice the curious palate of any sushi enthusiast."
Because I can eat A LOT of sushi, I decided to get the Vegan Sushi Set for 4 people for £46.00. Only: I ate it all by myself. It really wasn't as much sushi as you might think and/or I have a moderation problem specifically with sushi. Just a note: if you want any soy sauce, wasabi, or ginger it's an additional charge (for one person: £0.77; for two people: £1.54; etc.).
The platter included (ranked from my favorite to least favorite) :
+ Vegan Dragon Roll: "a concoction of spicy and savory fillings, topped with a sleek slice of avocado" it was light, bright, and full of fun textures! The sriracha mayo and salty peanut combo was delish!
+ Fried Tofu Roll: "a blend of crispy tofu and zesty flavors, wrapped in soy paper with a spicy mayo twist" was SO better than I thought it was going to be! The tofu wasn't that crispy, but it was still such a satisfying roll.
+/- Avocado Tartarus Roll: essentially a cucumber roll topped with creamy avocado, a zesty nut sauce, and everything bagel seasoning. As flavorful as it sounds! But also as wet as it sounds.
- Hiyashi Roll: "this refreshing choice balances crisp vegetables with soft tofu for a light yet satisfying flavor" was inedible. The slimy textured, fishy smelling seaweed on top was, to me, disgusting and even when I scraped it off, it was all I could taste in the rice.
I also got edamame, but wish I either a) hadn't or b) experimented with the truffle flavored option, because the ones I got were covered in soggy and overpowering onion crisps.
Overall, I was overwhelmed by how much cream cheese there was in every single roll. In some (because of the quantity and other flavors), it worked. In other rolls, there was SO much of it that it was all I could taste and feel in my mouth, and when it started melting it just gave me the ick.
If/when I order from them, I'd stick to the first three rolls! read more
