Miner's has changed over the last few years. It used to be a local hardware store that almost always had the bits and pieces you needed. Now, if you want a bar-b-q or smoker or high priced items they probably have it. Otherwise, good luck. Also don't trust the website if it says something is in stock. I was in yesterday to buy vegetable plants, and was treated warmly by all employees, especially my checkout person. Still on the trail of succulents, we stopped by the Miner's Ace in Arroyo Grande. The store is kind of wedged into a shopping area along the creek, so parking is sometimes a challenge, but we were able to park right in front. I slid into the store and took a right turn to the plant area. They do have almost the same selection as the San Luis Obispo store, but it is displayed along a fenced area by the parking. I was impressed by their display of colorful pottery, and the condition of the plants seems good. I searched the varieties, and found a local plant I had not seen anywhere else, a Dudleyana from Los Osos, as well as a short fuzzy plant, so they made their way home with me. I've had mixed dealings with Miners Ace Hardware in Arroyo Grande. Those inside the store have always been helpful and attentive when I've been searching the store for various items. Recently, I was looking for a particular Webers BBQ without much luck. This past weekend, I found a model close to the one I wanted. Missey was extremely helpful in tracking it down for me even though there were few left. I made my purchase and I'm now excited for it to be delivered so I can use it and entertain this summer. The outdoor garden centre is another matter entirely, however. Amy (sp?) who I gather is a manager, can barely be bothered. They seem disinterested in everything other than watering plants. I purchased an expensive fountain in connection with my new landscaping project. And while I'm appreciative of their efforts to bring it into the rear garden, they removed all the rubber plugs (apparently to drain water?) which they didn't replace. I wasn't able to squeeze the rubber plugs myself and have them stay as they kept slipping loose. I spoke to Amy in the garden centre who told me I would have to replace the plugs, using silicon, holding them in place till they dried, then silicon an exterior ring around each (all 3). Why didn't they do this before delivery of this $1,200 fountain? Isn't that what a customer forward retailer would do--repair what they had pulled apart? So she handed me a small tube of silicon and told me to do it myself as I was apparently a bother to her watering. I had to go out and purchase a pump to remove the water that had been collected in each tier. Then I had to replace each plug holding the plugs in place for some time (longer than the minute or two she said) as it dried to prevent them from popping out. All while on my knees which isn't easy for someone of my age. Then I realized the second tier had no plug--it was missing. I had to return the next day to see if I could get the missing plug. Amy told the woman who was helping me that "he" was here yesterday--as if I wasn't standing there and was just bothering her again. The helpful associate found me a rubber plug, which I took home. It doesn't fit and is too rigid to push in. So I'm sitting here with a $1,200 fountain from Miners Ace that doesn't work. and I'm furious. Unfortunately, customer service isn't known to Amy in the garden centre. While I will continue to do business inside, I'm done with the garden centre. I spent a great deal there in order to landscape and I'm extremely unhappy with their indifferent attitude to their bread and butter, their customers. read more

My car key battery had failed. My friend said run over to Miners hardware ! I didn't want to get locked out of my car again! From Paints to hardware , clothes, a great garden center and everything in between. A young lady who had the skills of an engineer opened up my key fob, which was difficult at best. She placed the new battery in and went outside to make sure it worked for me. I walked around the store and every time I turned around someone smiled at me and said may I help you. While both Miner's in AG/Grover are quite pleasant, this location is stellar for succulents/plants and service. I have been here twice for succulent hunting and was helped or chatted with several wonderful staff. One pleasant lady was a former Philosophy major who had a great sense of humor. All employees had genuine smiles and were happy to help and often went above and beyond. The layout for the plants is nicely organized and the price/selection was excellent. For succulents, they had possibly the second-best selection out of all the local Miners that I have explored in SLO County. While the Miners in SLO proper, near the railroad station, have more choices, that location seems to have some management who are less than pleasant near closing time and act like customers are a bother...but not here in AG. While I always kind of knew this location was here, I did not visit here till when the county did a Flu vaccine clinic just across the street at the firehouse. I figured that I could get a shot, see if they needed extra help, and then check out succulents. Actually, I had a somewhat warmer Miner's welcome than some of the SLO County people, who seemed a bit stressed. For some reason, some local hardware stores have a sort of relaxing botanical garden theme going on and the mellow atmosphere is quite soothing. It is also fun to have spontaneous conversations with some other customers who are also exploring the plant selection. Over some visits, I did snag several cool-looking succulents to add to my collection. Since they are right down the road from either the Farmers Market or some Farm Stands, and even a plant nursery, it is quite easy to find an excuse to stop by. Super nice people! read more

After posting my review, Marc apologized and offered to order me a new kit from Stihl (again). Finally, after 2.5months and on the third attempt by Ace to make this right, I have received my order with some extras thrown in for the inconvenience. By the looks of it, the tool is the exact same one I returned in August but the battery and charger are both new. Why this wasn't handled this way from the get go is beyond me. Despite the wait and considerable effort on my part, I'm satisfied with the outcome. I'd still be wary to order online with in-store pickup in the future but I give Ace credit for taking action to resolve my case. read more

COVID19 update: I tried to use the curbside pick up option to avoid contact with anyone. Unlike all the other businesses that I have used curbside pick up with, Miners won't take your card over the phone. As such, be prepared to use your credit card in a swiping machine. This is something I wish was mentioned ahead of time as I was unprepared without a face covering or hand sanitizer in tow and left empty handed. read more

Impressive gift section featuring Farmhouse style decor, picture frames, bird feeders and more. All of the shelves were well stocked within the store and the employees were kind and helpful. Until this pandemic, I would have given this Ace Hardware store 5 stars & it was definitely my favorite 1 in the area, with knowledgeable, attentive staff, & since many are still working there & doing what they can to be helpful, I give them 2 stars. BUT, many are NOT wearing masks, are defiant about it when asked. They stand close to customers as they normally would pre-pandemic when answering questions, necessitating customers repeatedly stepping back to try to distance themselves. Last week when I went there to try to find a few items, they had a display of bottles of disinfectant. I was reading the ingredients and description when one of the staff members came up, again standing way too close to me, and told me that's what they use to sanitize the carts. I pointed out that it only disinfected for bacteria, not viruses. He told me that's what the virus was! I'm not kidding you! I looked at him over my double- layered masks and explained to him that bacteria & viruses are 2 different things and this disinfectant does not kill viruses. He just stared at me, turned around, and walked away. Yesterday, I made another trip 2 this Ace Hardware and experienced the same thing from staff members, and noticed that many were not actually wearing masks. Also they don't require patrons to wear masks or enforce social distancing although they have signs up encouraging it. They have no effort at limiting how many patrons are entering the store. As you may know, it is a small store with crowded narrow aisles. The parking lot was pretty much full when I went. For the most part, patrons wearing masks were doing their best to steer clear of each other. The anti-maskers were making no effort whatsoever! It was frightening to say the least because they were so many! When I left the store, I was asking a young man who worked there (who was not wearing a mask) if there was a separate place for the dirty carts versus clean carts. He seemed puzzled. So I asked "do you sanitize the carts?" He responded, " we sanitize some" & he shrugged, with a defiant look on his face. So, I answered "in other words, No." He got a mean look on his face and said "shop at your own risk" and then turned and went back in the store! As if it's not enough to be dealing with a pandemic that causes you to risk your life every time you go shopping, we have to deal with these COVIDIOTS who basically a assault us everytime they exhale and then add insult to injury by being rude and lacking any semblance of customer service! Needless to say, I will not be shopping at this Ace Hardware again until there is no longer need to be concerned about a pandemic, socially distancing, or wearing masks. They are not the only Hardware store in town, or even in the area. And there's always Amazon Prime, who realizes customers are why they have jobs! read more

After years of being able to use current and past discounts, management this week decided on Tuesday to not accept expired discounts. They should have warned customers before the change. Miners is more expensive on just about everything than the other major hardware stores in the area. The discounts used to equalize things and built loyalty. read more

I went to Miner's Ace hardware to get a key replaced for my Toyota Corolla. The process ended up being a little bit more difficult because of the year of my car and how difficult it was to program. Had some purchases and I wanted to use a $5 'reward' coupon. The check out person would not let me use the coupon because it was dated to begin May 1 and I was shopping on April 30. This is addressing the COVID pandemic and their abhorrent lack of safety. I am sitting in the lot waiting for my husband. He apparently is the only person that is wearing a mask or gloves. There are no wipes. No employees have on masks. One employee just walked into the lot rubbing his nose with his hand. Note: his hand, with snot and God knows what else id about to touch the products you go buy, because he does not have on a mask and his nose is running. I have to say this place has the friendliest staff I have ever come across in a retail business. I wish they had a place like this back home since all we have is the big box stores. We usually go to this Miner's or the one in San Luis. We recently went to the one in Arroyo Grande and they were having their 20% off sale. So we picked up what we needed with help of some of the very friendly staff. Then I decided to look at barbecues even though we were not ready to buy as I was still doing some research on them. We talked to Denice who is the assistant manager and then she talked to the store manager and we could get 20% off the barbecue as we would need to order it. My husband and I decided to think about it and went home. Then I did some research on the Internet and decided it was really the best deal for exactly what we needed. So we went back to the store and found Denice and she said she would order it. Also they put together the barbecues for free. Meanwhile she asked one of the employees there about how it's disassembled so we could get it into the car when we pick up. That employee and I'm sorry I don't remember her name said hey we have one on the floor. And sure enough there was one so with her help it got taken apart and put in the back of my car. It was also suggested to get a cover and we had to order that but again we got it at the 20% off. Such a deal! Having grown up on the Central Coast, Miner's is a fixture in our family. My parent's have been loyal Miner's customer's for years, through projects large and small. My dad has always marveled at the wealth of knowledge found in the Miner's staff. Men and women who seem to have every washer, nut, bolt and possible solution stored in a database between their ears! As we have watched Miner's expand over the years, we have grown to frequent the Arroyo Grande store the most, whereas when I was growing up in Grover (City) Beach, the Grover location was our "go to" hardware, home maintenance and landscaping stop. My son loves it for the fresh popcorn served on the weekend's. I have to admit that I love it for the wide selection of plants at reasonable prices and the frequent Customer Appreciation sales. My mom and I also frequently walk away with something from their home furnishings and gifts department that we didn't intend to buy but are drawn to (their buyers are GOOD). And the feature that I cannot say enough about is the small-town customer service that you receive, from the lumber pick-up warehouse to the garden department -- even when you are matching an obscure light bulb or having a key made (they are the best in the County for keys). And right up through the friendly register staff... It has always been family-owned and operated and the message is clear that the Miner Family has a certain expectation about how to treat their customers, and I don't think that has flagged or will ever change, thankfully. I love this Miner's Ace Hardware. I had never shopped at an Ace before moving to this area. They have it all - garden, paint, wood, hardware, kitchen, toys, clothing, lighting, and more! Other than the good prices and frequent discounts, what I love the most are the staff. They are consistent, professional, friendly, and knowledgable! Unfortunately I would not recommend this Ace Hardware store branch. I purchased several Bug-A-Salt items at 44.59. Ace has this on sale for 34.99. We called and they said they would honor the price. So, my 77 year old dad went in and the manager said that this is an on line price only. I have since gone to 4 Ace hardware stores and purchased 8 of the items for 34.99. I will return the Bug-A-Salt after the holidays. if you want to have a happy holiday avoid this store branch!!! read more

Interesting set up this location has compared to its Miner's counterparts in other SLO County locations (see my other reviews ), but it's still a Miner's. Quality products, great service, and small town mom-and-pop mercantile feel. Not every employee I walked by said hello to me, but that doesn't offend me. It's the holidays, employees are typically on other missions when they breeze past you, and since I've been in their "shoes" in similiar employment, I fully understand. For someone on a budget like myself, I was happy to find a variety of small $1.99 houseplants, to which I bought one, even though I had come in to find a different plant to which I didn't succeed. What stood out from my visit was the end, when I went to pay. After getting into the checkout "maze", within thirty seconds, I was summoned to the checkout. Then the phone rings, and I witnessed this queen of multitasking (aka Miner's AG Cashier) do her magic. She was on the phone trying to direct the caller to the proper department while scanning my items, not making me feel ignored or like I was an added task to her workload. When she finally succeeded in getting her caller situated, she looks up at me and completes her service to me, again, providing me with her attention, I, as a customer, deserves.
