If not for the good folks at Westport Family Medicine Center, I wouldn't be able to go back in tomorrow. I went to their patient-only walk-in clinic yesterday and was out an hour later with a diagnosis and three prescriptions that have been working wonderfully to bring me back up to full speed. Although the doctor I saw was not my PCP, he did a great job at making me feel comfortable and taken care of. I've been a patient of Dr. Jane Li since December and the level of service the doctors at this facility provides is above and beyond. I switched over from being a patient at the STARR Clinic near my home and the difference in service and quality is astounding. Their facility was recently renovated and everything is brand new and squeaky clean. If you're looking for a new PCP, I can't recommend switching over to Westport Family Medicine Center enough.

The reason they are not getting 4 stars: I went in there one day for something, and they had funny hours, something about lunch hour or other. This put a huge damper in my day, as a walk in should be open at least during normal work hours with no interruption. The waiting room has absolutely no warmth at all, but it's funny, beyond the doors of the waiting room, there were touches of niceness scattered around. The room I was in the first time overlooked a pond. Definitely would recommend for a townie.

The first, back in June, was an excellent 5-star visit. I brought my daughter in for a burn, booked online, and was greeted by the front desk registrar -- an African American woman who could not have been kinder or more welcoming. Ian Kelly, NP, treated her and was outstanding: thorough, kind, and reassuring. I left impressed enough that when my other daughter needed urgent care today, this was the first place I thought of. Today did not go the same way. I booked a noon appointment online and checked in at the kiosk upon arrival. After about thirty minutes, a Caucasian woman with glasses, wearing a brace on one arm, got our attention by waving her other arm back and forth over her head. When we walked over, she announced loudly and rudely that if we didn't have an appointment, we needed to come to her. I let her know that we did, in fact, have an appointment. She insisted we didn't and essentially told us we hadn't made an appointment at all, at which point I told my daughter to pull up the confirmation email to show her. She then interrupted her colleague (the front desk registrar from my prior visit, who was a gem) who was mid-conversation with another patient to ask if our name was on her screen. It wasn't. She then told us we hadn't checked in properly, and I talked her through exactly what I had done on the kiosk which was the proper procedure. I told her she was welcome to go out to the kiosk to verify it herself. She then walked out to the kiosk, announced to me that my daughter's name wasn't there, and then had to backtrack when she saw that it actually was. She then went through the same process I did and lo and behold - it was a technical issue with the kiosk. Instead of an apology or, at the very least, a change in her tone, her response was to repeat several times that the kiosk isn't registration's responsibility and none of this was her fault. No one had said it was, but it certainly wasn't ours -- which I told her. Her offer was to restart us a walk-in and for us to have to wait another thirty minutes. I told her we'd go somewhere else. As we got up to leave, she told us to have a "luuuuuvley day" in the snarkiest voice she could muster up. The kiosk failure wasn't her doing. The way she treated and spoke to us was. The woman who checked us in in June was working right next to her. If we'd gotten her again, I know this would have gone a whole lot differently. People come to urgent care sick, hurt, and already stressed - they should not also have to absorb this kind of behavior and treatment. Southcoast should look at why kiosk check-ins aren't populating on the registration screens, and how the front desk handles it when they don't. Clearly, she hasn't been trained for this situation. Or maybe she just gets a kick out of treating people this way.

So today my husband and I scheduled our appointments back to back. His was at 2pm, mine at 3pm. We were both here on time. My husband 15 min early, and I was 30 minutes early. Well it is currently 3:40 and I have yet to be seen by the doctor and my husband is still here waiting. I understand covid makes things a little slower, but this is unacceptable! I've thought about switching Drs for a while now but this has solidified my decision. Unacceptable to keep a patient waiting almost 45 minutes and my poor husband who has been sitting here since 2pm (it's currently 3:45). At least check-in within 15 minutes to let me know you're running really behind allowing me the option to leave!!

He certainly did so with me. Called me at home to fill me in on test results, but I wasn't home. Before I had a chance to call him back, he called again, and on his day off! Every doctor should aspire to be like Dr. Chen. But if you end up seeing Petrillo-Bolanos, expect to be hustled out of the examination room as soon as she has performed a perfunctory examination. Don't expect any follow-through nor follow-up. Once you are out of her examination room, you are forgotten. And don't bother leaving a message for her, she won't return your call. Can't speak on Dr. Nace nor Dr. Fitzhugh, have never seen either. What you gotta watch out for with this place is their billing practices. Even if they have all your insurance info, and you have no co-pay due, don't be surprised if you get a bill anyway. They have pulled this with me and my wife more than once. My guess is that they send phony bills to elderly people, (we qualify), in hopes that they are intimidated, or just don't know any better. Hawthorn Medical is part of the Steward Health Care system, which was once owned by Cerberus Capital MGT., but is now owned by a consortium of doctors, who, hopefully, care as much about their patients as they do their wallets. Unfortunately, our beloved doctors adopted the business practices of Cerberus, whose motto was, "show me the money." If you remember your Greek Mythology, you will remember Cerberus - the three headed monster who guarded the gates of hell. Nice symbol for a health care facility. Finally, if you have an urgent need for urgent care, (not an emergency), and you go to the urgent care facility, only to find that your urgent need is subordinated to those who have made appointments ahead of you presumably because their urgent need could wait until the appointed time, then where, pray tell, is the urgent care?

Finally the doctor comes in and I tell her I have pneumonia a lot and that it hurts to breathe in and I feel like I have an ear infection. While the PA prescribed anti-nausea medication, I found myself having to ask basic questions about how to safely rehydrate, what I should be drinking, and the min amt I needed to avoid becoming more dehydrated. I called the lab and was closed. I then called urgent care for guidance. I explained that I was very sick, weak, dehydrated, and in a town I was unfamiliar with. I was told to "drop it off anyway" because "they would take it." When I asked who "they" were if the lab was closed, she would answer the question.
