Fun fact is a next to an infamous Italian funeral parlor so we always felt safe attending serves there. I went there during the 1980's and felt at home getting married there when it was led by an orthodox rabbi. Each bench was marked with a plaque with the family name. The wood was mahogany. The torah cover donated in honor of my birth and another child of a prominent doctor. Good to be able to add to the history and connection. I hope that when I drive over to see this building next weekend it will be beautiful still in what ever form it is today.

This is the most welcoming conservative haimish congregation I have ever been too. Rabbi Engelmayer…read moreis easily approachable and is a brilliant Torah scholar. He has a very easy way or conveying any Torah message in a very understandable way with meaning and relevance to today. Services are laid back and participatory with Torah study occurring during the Torah reading. Certain prayers are said in many languages including Russian, Hebrew, French, Spanish and English to reflect the diversity of the congregants. Everyone here is special and important. Rabbi runs many opportunities for learning and there is always a kiddush luncheon after Shabbat services. The new Chazzan is wonderful as well and his voice certainly adds to the ruach! Walk into this shul and you feel home. Everyone is important in this community and everyone is well respected.

An Absolutely Beautiful and Welcoming Experience!…read more The second part of the funeral was prayers at The Islamic Cultural Center of New York. The Islamic cultural center is a magnificent landmark and a truly special place. From the moment I entered the grounds there was nothing but peace. The beautiful Mosque is grand, modernist architecture on Third Avenue, you know you are visiting a landmark of spiritual and cultural significance. It is one of the city's largest mosques and serves not only as a place of worship for the Muslim community. Stepping inside, the vast, light-filled prayer hall with its soaring dome is breathtakingly peaceful. Upon entering the prayer room, shoes are not permitted. The ladies are on one side, and the men are on the other. Which I actually like because it was nice to have a place wherein ladies can speak and pray amongst themselves. Even though we were there for final prayers for the family matriarch. We were all at peace. The space is immaculately clean and well-organized, with a palpable sense of calm that is perfect for prayer and reflection. The staff and regular attendees are exceptionally friendly and welcoming to newcomers, including non-Muslim visitors like myself. The center also offers a wide range of educational programs and events, including weekly classes and forums, demonstrating its commitment to being a true cultural center, not just a mosque. Whether you are seeking a place to pray, to learn more about Islam, or simply to admire the unique and beautiful architecture, the ICCNY is a phenomenal place. This center is a credit to the city and a shining example of how a place of worship can also be a vital, welcoming community resource. It's a must-visit.

I love the concept, love the fact that no one is interpreting religion for you and you can attain amazing peace and closeness with your culture in the presence of community. I looked for a gurudwara many years back and landed here. This is not a complete substitute obviously but it helps folks in manhattan stay in touch with their Sikhi. So three years back couple of folks got together and formed the association with a motto to set up a place of prayer for Sikhs in Manhattan. Though this is not a traditional gurudwara which is open all seven days of week, but they try to have gatherings(Diwans) thrice a month to have the prayer session. It is a very intimate gathering with less than 100 people unlike other big Gurudwaras. I really like the ambience of the place and it is a place which gives peace to my soul. As always people from all faiths and religions are welcomed here and free food is served during all the gatherings. They always update the upcoming gathering dates on the website (www.manhattansikhassociation.org/ ).
