The librarians here try to act like bouncers in a night club...we reserved a study room and they won't let us in until at least 3 of our group members are present... They want to encourage students to use the rooms but then won't let them in. There is absolutely NONE of the rooms being utilized right now so this is quit stupid and unproductive use of the library. There aren't many places on any college where you can walk right up and get help. There are generally long lines or lots of hoops to jump through. Not so at the library at MiraCosta College! Whether you need help with your research (see a librarian), help with writing a paper (see the writing center), help with your math homework (see the math learning center), or help with any other class (see the tutoring and academic support center), you can WALK RIGHT IN and get HELP!!!!! Between the 2 floors of the fairly new building are hundreds of computers including giant iMacs!!!! The computers are loaded with so much software, it's no wonder they don't EXPLODE! Seriously, they have the Adobe CS5 software on every single computer. Tell me what other college around hooks you up like that!!!! read more

I just started college again after a 20 year absence...and things have certainly changed as far as school libraries are concerned! Gone are the rows and rows of catalog cards with the Dewey Decimal System, and when you first walk into the library at MiraCosta, you actually don't see any books at all! Just rows and rows of students sitting at computers, and multiple glass-panel meeting rooms. For a minute, I wondered if they'd gone completely digital at MiraCosta, and I actually asked aloud if there were any actual books in the library on campus, haha! I got a laugh from some of the younger students (hey, we didn't have computers in our libraries 20 years ago, cut me some slack...I am literally pre-internet!), but I was assured that yes, there were plenty of actual print books...they are just located upstairs in the library on campus. The entire lower half of the building is a sea of computer monitors, with students busy working away at their assignments. It was really kind of awesome to see so many computers all in one place. I was at the library to attend the second to last class for my Counseling 100 course. We had a short tour of campus, passed the clock tower (that never seems to read the same time on all four sides...is it just me?!?), and we visited several other places on campus to help students with their needs. We ended up in one of the beautiful glass walled meeting rooms, which was full of even more computers. As we passed one of the rooms, I noticed "STEM Center" written in lettering across the top of one of the doors. Again, I made the group laugh by asking what "STEM" stood for (I know now, but I had been afraid to ask because everyone just seemed to understand what it was!). Once they explained it to me, I was super happy that they have a STEM center on campus in the library to help students who may be struggling, but I was simultaneously relieved that I would not have to take those heavy courses for my major; which is about as non-STEM as you get! We ended up in this wonderful room surrounded by glass walls and covered in computers, and there were volunteers in there with us, walking around to see if we needed any help with our final project (my Counseling class was a late start class and an early end class...I was ambitious when I took my first class upon returning after two decades, and my class for Spring 2018 Semester ran only from March 26th to May 14th.) I loved the experience so much that I'm signed up for full time classes in both Summer AND Fall 2018 semesters...and with my transfer credits from 20 years ago, I should have my Associates by early 2019! I am grateful for the staff and the volunteers that work in the library to ensure that all students who come for help can receive the assistance they need...everything from a writing center that will proof your papers to the STEM assistance and math tutoring. This really is a supportive and amazing campus. I have a feeling I'm going to be quite successful here! The campus is laid back...people of all ages attend, and so nobody bats an eyelash when they see me walk in with my pink spiky hair, piercings, tattoos, and all things Doctor Who on my person. If you happen to see a royal blue Ford Explorer SUV with Disabled plates on it and a TON of Doctor Who magnets lining the bumper along with a rather impressive row of My Little Ponies glued to the dashboard...that would be my beast. We call it the CARDIS...and yes, I'm a huge nerd. :) Feel free to stop me and say hi. Let me know if you saw me on Yelp or if you just saw me walking around looking clueless and thought I might need some GPS directions back to my parking spot. I love meeting new people, and if the library hadn't been so packed when we went in...I would have made it a point to try and meet a few new people. That's the hardest part of starting a new school...I'm not sure who is going to think I'm super creepy if I try to strike up awkward small talk with them...so I basically stick to myself and my one class full of classmates. My name is Cindy, and I'm totally approachable. If you see me in the library, the SAC, the Counseling Office, Admissions, the Cashier, DSPS and EOPS or any of the other places I've frequented as I've tried to get into the swing of things and acclimate to campus life...introduce yourself. I'm autistic, but totally not antisocial, and it would be great to see some more familiar faces during my treks around campus. That library though...SUPER impressed. They're so helpful, and you can even check out copies of class books in the library if they're available. Sometimes, they've got extra and the teacher will reserve some as study copies. It never hurts to check, right? Happy computing, drafting the perfect paper in the writing center, getting STEM assistance, or honing your math skills. The library at MiraCosta has a little something for everyone! It's one of my favorite one stop shops for comprehensive help I've seen on campus yet! read more

I came to study at the Mira Costa library since I had a few hours to kill before attending a graduation on campus. As this was my first visit to this campus, I was very impressed with how modern, spacious, and clean the library was. Being from LA, and having visited multiple community colleges before, this library exceeded my expectations. The library has two stories, and is very quiet. I was able to get a window table on the second floor that overlooks the campus and was able to get some peaceful, uninterrupted work done. You do need to be a student to access the wi-fi. I would recommend this library and would def. come back if I'm in the area and was able to get wi-fi access from a friend. read more

and while we're singing the praises of receiving help... Don't forget there are Computer Lab Aides manning all those computers to answer questions and help with formatting for MLA and APA setup! Both Oceanside and San Elijo campus' have Open Computer Labs connected to the Library's, staffed with knowledgeable people happy to assist. read more

My college library helped me learn the Basics of the Latin and Greek languages. There are tons of books on the History of Greek Literature as well. There is a 3 week check out, and about a hundred different places to sit. I totally recommend this library. read more

This college has set the barre high. Universities could learn from Mira Costa. The education, staff and atmosphere on campus is top notch. There is a "pride of ownership" on this campus. I hVe been to others campuses and they don't come close to MCC. Love it here! read more

This is an excellent library in which to get work done. There is a plethora of fantastic resources, such as one on one tutoring, as well as drop-in tutoring, the Math Learning Center and the Writing Center. There are plenty of people to ask for information about scheduling appointments computer questions, and assistance in gathering sources/information for student projects. Everybody at the MiraCosta Library is exceptionally helpful and kind. There is a large and quality selection of materials available in this library. The second story of this library is so wonderfully quiet. I kicked the habit of going to coffee shops and loud public libraries, for they are so noisy and distracting. There is no screaming children or loud banter on the top floor. Everyone is very quiet and courteous and it allows for maximum productivity. If you get there early enough, you can easy swipe a large individual desk with a power outlet. Not to mention there are plenty of desks available upstairs and downstairs WITH power outlets for use of devices. On top of all of this, you can easily reserve a study room online if you need some super hardcore study time with a group. This is such a beautiful and clean/well maintained library. Keep in mind that you do have to be a student to be able to use the wifi here. Fantastic place! read more
