Like a step back in time! Amish run store, they even speak their language to each other. No lights, just skylights. Lots and lots of dry goods, cooking & baking supplies, snacks & random little treasures. Don't miss the cute signs outside for parking horses. Love this area!

The numerous skylights that provide the light in this Amish run store.

There was/is a store just like this in Northern Indiana, not far from where my parents lived before they moved closer to us, in Wisconsin, so I was thrilled when I "discovered" this place! Love the fact that most things are sold in bulk, which means you have access to dried goods that you normally don't find in your regular grocery store. My wife especially loves the bags of dehydrated marshmallows, like you find in kids cereals. The place is unique in that it is run by the Amish and has no electricity, so don't bring your credit cards-it's cash only. The place is usually just lit by sky lights so it is a bit darker than you might normally be accustomed to. Don't worry though, they have kerosene lanterns for those darker, over cast days. This place is definitely "out of the way" as they service the local Amish community, but it is well worth the extra effort to find it and check it out.

Mishler's is a fun place to take out of state visitors who aren't used to the Amish community!

Over the passed two nights I've been watching a movie on Netflix (or Amazon, can't remember) called…read moreYellow Bird. The setting is mostly a small town supermarket with the general surly employees who don't want to be there but it's probably an area where nothing else is available. That's the general feeling I'm getting from this place. I needed some water to drink and wash my hands, since the location I have been working during the recent weeks has only a stagnant riverside that's too steep to safely access, and drinking it is out of the question. I have soda, so really I need it to rinse off at the end of the day mostly. Today I spilled Mountain Dew and I was too sticky to cope with, a bit OCD. So I drive 6-7miles to get a case or something to have around. After finding a quite decent grocery store I was rather pleased, not wanting to buy anything from a C Store if possible. I find my water and que up in the line and as I'm paying I am met with precisely the same type of shitty attitude from the young lady running the register. She has a terrible attitude and her sour vibes are not able to be restrained to her inner self. It's bursting out from her like radiation around a nuclear reactor. Pleasantries are completely lost on her. I kind of get it. I'd not like to live in such a place especially, but on another level, I think I'd actually enjoy this town. It's a dead town, no industry in the 21st century except the window glass factory that's no doubt the only place that offers sustainable work for the people. A few bars, probably the same number of churches, which don't offer anything tangible except perhaps the lies that hang in the air and coil up the white picket fences of the devout. The store, it's not bad. But the girl has single-handedly made me want to buy water at the BP at the towns edge next time I'm in need.

New owner, old familiar employees gone, greatly diminished stock (still gingerbread cookies though,…read moreglad to say!), higher prices...even before latest inflation. Weekly ad is a lot of highly processed foods, the stuff we're s'posed to avoid.

    Charlie's Lakeside Country Store - Fall/Winter Hours 2025

If Charlie's doesn't have it, you can do without!!…read more Seriously, we've checked there for the most obscure items to avoid driving from Merrimac into S-P or Baraboo, and they always have what we need or something close enough! The produce they have might be limited but it's always top-notch! Liquor aisle is very good as are the baked goods they carry. We love Charlie's and will always tank up our car and boat there as well. Supporting local small business is the way to go!

This happened. Anyplace you can buy gas, toothbrushes, candy, toy cars and monkey butt is a winner…read more (I didn't buy the monkey butt- I laughed REALLY hard). It all started when the three year old child of my friends asked me about the "Chuck Store" Moi: "What is a 'Truck Store'?" Kid: "CHUCK, it is the bestest store ever in the whole world with candy!" Moi: "Do they have a toothbrush? He forgot to pack a toothbrush..." Kid: "Duh. They have EVERYTHING, and candy too." Indeed. Naturally, I had to see this marvel. And the kid tells no lies- this is part gas station, part old-timey general store, part hardware store, gardening center, liquor store, candy emporium and drugstore- that is a whole lotta hats, but the lady working the counter was clearly a pro able to direct me to candy and toothbrushes with ease. For the kid, a combo of monster truck toy car and lolly pop that took two days of effort to eat ($1.29, pictured with all it's awesome glory). That car is miraculously still intact. Have you played with a three year old? I'm surprised I am intact, kid is relentless and makes my hyperactive energy look tame. Awesome. For me to keep up, a Starbucks double shot chugged at light-speed and the priceless shot of Lady Monkeybutt- which I cannot believe is a real product and had me laughing hysterically as much as the three year old. Maybe more. I didn't know places like this existed anymore, but am glad they do.
