Lordy lord. Great place to eat on a Saturday night in Auckland. Fried Chicken was quite good (a top seller) as were tacos and shrimp po boys. The popcorn shrimp po boy was a sandwich with light, fluffy bread, and crispy flavourful shrimp, with cabbage tossed in a thick, creamy, slightly sweet sauce. Lively atmosphere. Bird cages cover the lamps hung from the ceiling. Overall - thumbs up for a fun and tasty ding experience in Auckland.

Miss Clawdy is an eatery that aims to fill the soul with southern cuisine. Located in the chic lot of eateries on the North Wharf of town, its a great place for hearty, comfort food. Open for lunch and dinner, a friend and I came here for a leisurely lunch on a sunday afternoon. When seated we were given complimentary popcorn - I call it sweet and spice. - bit of sugar, cayenne, paprika, cinnamon etc. Great snack and its always a nice surprise when you get a little something unexpectedly. We chose this place from the rest because my friend is GF and it has a great range of Gf menu items, making it more applicable to diners with allergies/intolerances. Because our choices were based more solely on items being GF, they probably wouldn't have been my first choices but actually I was surprised. The kingfish ceviche was actually really delicious. The fish was cut to a great size which gave it texture and the coconut sauce didn't overpower like most ceviches served. Plus the corn chips were a good compliment. We were a bit disappointed with the chargrilled kumara, although it was tasty we thought for $8 it wasn't the best value for money after we saw the bowl of hand-cut fries and how much was offered for the same price. The jambalaya was good but not great. Although a hearty dish, I felt like it was just missing that moorish punch of flavour you yearn for. However all the ingredients were cooked to the right degree. If you are looking at heading somewhere for a drink, they have a great list of cocktails, ales and wines. Friendly and knowledgeable service from start to end with quick service. Rating Food: 7/10 Service: 9/10 Value for Money: Good 12 Jellicoe Street, North Wharf Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 1130am-Late

Move over Mexico, your big sister's come to town. This is such a cool eatery with a South American-inspired menu and reasonable prices. Here's what we had to share - Cajun hush puppies with corn and jalapeños (yum), Miss Clawdy slaw (sour and tangy, perfect partner to the Southern fried jerk chicken), coconut fried banana for dessert with mango & dried banana chilli salsa & vanilla icecream. Such a great menu with so many choices, have to try the jambalaya, pulled pork taco and definitely the grilled cornbread. Plans have been hatched to return a third time.

I had been keen to try this restaurant for quite some time so when I happened to be in the Wynyard Quarter a couple of weeks ago & was looking for lunch I figured I better give this place a go. Our order consisted of the following current menu items: The Cuban - pulled pork shoulder, swiss cheese, pickles, habanero mustard & stewed apple ($12.50), the southern fried jerk chicken with chipotle & lime mayo ($15.50) and the chargrilled baby kumara, macadamia nut crumble, orange oil & parsley ($8). I have to honestly say I was expecting a lot more flavor - everything fell quite flat. I could barely detect the swiss cheese or 'habanero' mustard on The Cuban, so much so that my toddler happily munched away on it without any reaction to what was supposed to be spicy. I make pulled pork in my slow cooker at home quite often & was disappointed to feel that this sandwich was sub par. The fried chicken was ok, but again, words like 'habanero & 'jerk' conjure up images of very spicy, full of heat items of food. It was barely bringing even the slightest tingle to my tastebuds. As for the chargrilled baby kumara, it came to the table SWIMMING in it's orange oil and the macadamia crumble ended up being a oily lumpy mess on the bottom of the dish. Additionally, the portion sizes of all three menu items were miniscule and I left still feeling hungry, which I find highly annoying when dining out. I will not be in any rush to go back, however, their complimentary popcorn was delish, and the server was oh so kind to get a second bowl for my toddler to enjoy, which I believe deserves an honorable mention! If they review the seasoning of the dishes and increase portion sizes or decrease their prices to a tapas style menu I may have a change of heart.

Yum! A group of Yelpers and I went for the first time on Sunday night, just in time for the live jazz at 6:30pm. Turns out it was also the NRL final so they had the warm up game (maybe the Junior Warriors) playing on a massive pull-down screen behind the singer....take note sports lovers. I couldn't go past the pulled pork with coleslaw and green beans. It took a little while for our meals to come out and when they did most of us noted that they weren't that hot but it didn't bother me too much as the pork was tender, drenched in sauce and super flavoursome. The coleslaw was ok - it reminded me of KFC coleslaw and the green beans were cooked well. The serving size was smaller than I expected but I am probably just used to the HUGE serving sizes in the States. What was a little off-putting though, was the filthy fish tank on the bar counter and the greasy finger marks all over the front door... I'd imagine it'd be difficult to keep the glass clean with half your customers demolishing ribs but I think these little details are important! I might wait a few months but i'd like to go back and try some of their other New Orleans dishes like gumbo and cornbread.

Three of us went to Hog Heaven a few weeks ago on a Tuesday night after seeing a 'cheap Tuesday' movie across the road at Event Cinemas. We had bought a Grabone voucher for Hog Heaven and and looking forward to dinner. Upon walking in, we first noticed the decor and really liked it. Although the lighting was dim, the wall decor really made up for it - think American wall prints, drink posters, plus fresh flowers on picnic style wooden tables, and condiments served in glass coca cola bottles. Hog Heaven immediately reminded us of the diner in the True Blood series - it had a similar feel to it. Another cool aspect was the open kitchen at the back - you could only see some of the food preparation and cooking, but it was nice that it was all open plan. All the chefs were women, which we thought was unusual compared to most restaurants in Auckland. We first started with an entree of 'Corn Bread Loaf' stuffed with corn and jalapeños ($6.50) which we shared between three of us. We all agreed that it was extremely sweet, almost like pound cake. We also could not taste any corn or jalapeños. It definitely tasted more like a dessert rather than an entree. We then ordered mains - 'Smoked Sausage and Chicken Gumbo' with celery, okra pepper, bacon, onion and white rice on the side ($15). I have never tried gumbo, so was unsure what it was meant to taste like. It was quite a small portion, but the meat was very tender. However, it was far too rich for me and I almost couldn't finish it. I would not order it again. My other friends ordered the 'Pulled Pork Sandwich' served with fries ($12) which was average and the fries were overcooked. Lastly, the 'Smoked Beef Cheeks' ($21.50), which were the highlight of the night. They were cooked well, the meat tender and had a nice flavour. We were all too full for dessert, but were okay with that. Usually, I am excited about dessert, but nothing really stood out. We were hoping for some Pumpkin Pie or something similar, but they only serve 'American' brownie and ice cream... On a higher note, the service was good. We did not have to wait long for our meals, our water glasses were always topped up and asked if we were enjoying our meals. These simple things lifted my rating up for Hog Heaven. Overall, a few hits and misses. Personally, not my style of food, but a certain type of person would enjoy it. I am unsure yet whether I would dine at Hog Heaven again, but in the meantime I will continue to try out other new restaurants that are opening up in Auckland...

They've also got a killer outdoor courtyard with festoon lights - it's reminds me heeeeaps of Rainey St in Austin (google it). As for the food, it's pretty on point. It sounds like they did a couple of research trips to the States and it totally shows. Basically you choose you meat(s), add the trimmings (collard greens, burnt end beans, mac 'n cheese, tater tots, pickles, slaw and maybe a couple of others...) and sauces (there's too many to name). It's served canteen style out of bain maries - so pretty casual. All of the meat was pretty good but the standout for me was the pastrami, which was coated in a dry spice rub and deliciously tender. The pickles were also a highlight. They do all their own pickling and they're the perfect mix of sour/salty/sweet. When we went they didn't yet have their liquor license so it was soft drinks all round. I'm looking forward to a return visit complete with a crafty brew.

I chose a nice prosecco and Ryan had the Fizzy Rascal which I got to taste. Nice but not my thing. His next choice however, the Jammy B*stard I could get to like! The menu is a meat lovers dream and has all the trimmings of a trip to southern America. Shrimp, buttermilk, corn, avocado, rice and beans are words you'll find among the tasty viddles (Yes Granny Clampett would be a might happy here) among the starters and sides. The main dish is always meat. Of course it is and lots of it. Ryan had the pulled pork which was sensational but small - but that was clear on the menu as the weight of each cut is marked. My pork hock was more substantial so I shared some with the poor boy. The hock was both moist inside and crispy outside. Our side dish was a refreshing apple slaw. Desert options were Orleans Donuts, Chocolate Chilli Mousse or Lemon Meringue Pie. Ryan chose the pie much to my delight and I cheated the Paleo diet to try a spoonful. Or two. We went all in and ordered the pit boss ($45pp), which includes family style entrees, mains and dessert. The set menu changes daily but our entrées were cornbread (crunchy, soft, buttery goodness - a must order), fried chicken with guacamole (a strange combination in my mind but delicious nonetheless) and their magic mushrooms w chickpeas & blue cheese (take it or leave it). Then came the mains... a smorgasboard of slow-cooked, tender-as-it-gets barbecued meat. I'm talking brisket, pulled pork, beef short rib....heaven! Especially when combined with a killer slaw, cauliflower cheese w a truffle crumb and their very own smoked bone sauce. Dessert was a beautiful platter with lemon meringue pie, chilli chocolate mousse and beignets (doughnuts) with salted caramel sauce. Sharing dessert was a little more awkward but I'm not a sweet tooth so I loved that I was able to try all three without having to have a whole dessert. My only criticism? The salted caramel was suuuuuuuuuper salty. A couple of comments were made around the table about the size of the portions but I think $45 for three courses is unreal value considering the quality of the food! It's also a brilliant option for bigger groups, which Miss Moonshines caters for really well. I think this may just be the most excited I've been about a restaurant all year - partly because I LOVE the Southern States but mostly because these guys have nailed it, from the red lipstick wearing waitresses to the moonshine served paper bags. I'm looking forward to my next visit already...
