Really poor service from an overrun and understaffed Lone Star team. 40mins for water to be offered and arrive at the table, and hour and a half before dinner orders taken. Our waitress had a learner that seamed to just follow her around, not allowed to carry anything or be useful at all... I ordered the Ribs (what Lone Star is famous for) the small stack that should of been 9 ribs was only served 8 ribs. I didnt complain, by that stage I was happy to eat anything... and at 9 rib per serving there was no way I was going to finish the meal. Lone Star if you are going to offer a smaller serving size it would be great if it actually was smaller and reasonably priced. could of done with a four rib option for $25 instead of 9 ribs for $33 or 12 ribs for $38. I really wish I could say I wont be back but as this is a firm family favorite, I'm sure I will be back here next year celebrating one birthday or another. read more

I'm the biggest fan of anything to do with Texas (Spurs, Mavericks, cowboy boots, Beyonce), so Lone Star is always a great place for me with a southern feel and a decent meal. Only a two-minute drive from town, Lone Star Newmarket is perfect for a dinner away from the hustle and bustle of town. I've slowly made my way through their menu over the years and the standouts have to be the Johnny Cash Stash, the Rockin' Ribeye, Prawn Star and the Redneck Ribs. As for their starters, they do a pretty good seafood chowder, but their buffalo chips and Lone Star Loaf are absolute classics- must haves for me at every visit! During my last visit I tried their caesar salad for the first time and it was great and big in portions (as they do) for price aswell. I really enjoy the service here and its probably better than other Lone Stars I've been to in Auckland. They cater well for groups and they were happy to split the bill between a group of six we had, which seems to be an effort for some places these days. On the downside, I'm not big on their "mood lighting"- it gets just a little too dark in the restaurant to fully enjoy (or see) your meal after 7:30pm. I also wish they'd switch up their booking system, I'd really like to make a reservation here and know that I'd be seated once there, but there's often a long wait for tables whether you call in advance or not. read more

You know, I'm a general fan of the culinary delights that come from the Lonestar state ... ribs, steak, jacket wedges etc.. So when I first visited Lonestar last decade it was a joyous time, the ribs were delicious, the steak was to die for .. Everything was amazing. Time goes by, I've managed to get older, and I have a frame of reference (having spent time in Texas) Warning: being Newmarket, parking is at a premium and it tends to get crowded real fast if it's not a 'school night' .. Lonestar is a 'homage' restaurant with a Americana menu, but not the flavour and taste I would expect, I love somewhere that has a special dish, an expertise and they didn't seem to have one. Alas, while the meal was nice .. It doesn't justify the price tag. Great for a simple sit down meal, but personally not one of my favourites. read more

I apologise for starting yet another review with xx restaurant and I go way back, but honestly this time Lone Star and I go way way back. Back when I was a teenager growing up in Dunedin and it was their only branch. People used to come from all over the country and eat there. It was by far their best branch. So I am already biased, I love the place for the wonderful memories. Which lead me to my next point. Lonestar is very special occasions friendly. It is the place to take your family and your kids and everyone would have a blast. No one tells you off for being loud or looks at you sideways for letting your kids eat with their hands and hair and clothes. Yet it still manages to look like a nice restaurant, not a cafe in a kids playground. I have managed over the years to order the same thing. Johnny Cash Stash which is my favourite dish, I know that because I never get sick of ordering it and I believe it is what keeps me coming here. This is the most succulent chicken breast ever. You can choose the size and therefore price of your meal as well as choosing from the cheaper kids menu for the kids. The focus on meat here shouldn't stop you if you are a vegeterian, they have few mains for you. Having said that it is more of a convienance when you are dining with a group rather than coming here to have a vegeterian meal. I give it 4 stars because it is a great family friendly restaurant, the food is good and filling. Yes it can get loud and busy and quite dim inside but quite decent overall. Desserts? Don't go out of your way to make room for that. They are nice but supersized and super heavy. read more

I went into Lone Star not expecting much. I dont know where I got this negative impression because I have never visited one before. I was pleasantly surprised. The interior is quite dark with big booths to sit in. Our waiter was a very young but very helpful and informative young guy. I was warned that the portions here are massive and that is definitely true. We ordered the Lone Star Loaf with garlic butter, which was alot bigger than expected and freshly warmed. We didnt manage to get through it all, so you may need more than two people if you want to finish it. We also had the tiger prawns, sautéed in garlic and chilli and served with rice, we could not go to Lone Star without trying the ribs. The prawns were delicious with just the right amount of hotness and flavour to them. It seems impossible that any human could get through the amount of ribs you are served, but my partner gave it a good attempt. The only thing that was a bit disappointing was the potatoes which came with the ribs. It didn't seem like they were cooked properly and could probably have been cooked for another few mins. That might be a personal taste thing though. Overall we left feeling pretty satisfied, and the food is reasonably priced which is always good! read more

Wait staff was really nice, but the food was just a little to salty for me. Over all the place is pretty dark inside so you can't really take pictures without blinding each other from the flash. The dessert was the best part. Wouldn't go back though, although it's a really nice place. The seats and tables are quite close together. read more

I've usually enjoyed Lone Star but an order I had last night was astonishing. The expected 12 pieces of ribs turned out to be 10 - if one was to count the three pieces of BONE ONLY. I'm shocked to open a box with what looks like partially eaten food. The frustrating part is that I only opened the takeaway when I arrived home and was forced to return the order. Having drove 20 minutes back leaving my gathering at home I was greeted by the owner insisting "I can't believe this" repeatedly. I was not offered an apology at any point. I always used to come here as a kid for birthday's parties so I hold it close to my heart. I also still believe that they do they best ribs in Auckland, I have tried a number of different places for ribs and they just don't even come close. Their portion sizes are huge and it's great, I only ever order the ribs because I know they are so delicious and I just can't bring myself to try anything else. They come covered in a sweet and sticky sauce, roasted herb potatoes and a fresh coleslaw salad, sooooo good! The staff are all really young and hip and try to make your experience as fun as possible. Price wise it's pretty reasonable you can get a large meal for around $20. I love the Newmarket location because there is plenty of free parking after 6pm, plus the restaurant itself is very cool, nice and big with plenty of booths and mood lighting. Having eaten at Lonestar new Lynn a number of years ago my wife and I stopped in for a meal on a night out at the restaurant expecting it to be the same. Unfortunately we fast discovered this was not the case. While the waitress was pleasant the rest of the experience was not. We ordered the squid rings to start with, they came out fast but had a coating on them that killed the squid . The worst part of it was not 10 min after receiving the entree and while we were obviously still eating said entree they delivered our mains. No time to finish the squid rings let alone digest them over a beer. The lamb shanks I ordered were not what I remembered , although tasty they were on the small side for $31 . The wife had ribeye steak and again cooked well but quite bland. We realise this isn't fine dining but for $113 we definately won't be returning or recommending it. read more

Never been a fan of the place but have given it plenty of chances but never wowed me always nicely presented but tastes pretty average, have often found the water glasses I get have lipstick marks on them.... the individuals who are on service are always lovely though. read more
